00:00Raging another debate, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddharamaya announced a ban on social media
00:04used for children below the age of 16 in the state.
00:07This was announced during his recent budget presentation targeting
00:11the alarming rise in mobile phone dependency amongst the youth.
00:15The policy aims to shield young minds from addictive algorithms,
00:20cyberbullying, mental health risks and exposure to harmful content,
00:24which leads to multiple issues like anxiety, depression, disrupted sleep.
00:31Earlier, Chief Minister Siddharamaya had raised the issue during a discussion
00:35with Vice Chancellors of Government Universities and sought their opinion.
00:39After the decision by Karnataka government, other states are likely to follow.
00:44Now, Andhra Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu in State Assembly said
00:47the government will soon launch a programme to prevent children under 13
00:51from accessing social media, likely within the next 90 days.
00:57Children as young as 9 years, 10 years, who don't understand
01:02what is the gravity in the social media,
01:07they tend to get into it.
01:11They're exposed to unnecessary issues, which at that age
01:16they should not be involved into.
01:19And that is the reason which is affecting their growth,
01:25mental growth, emotional growth.
01:27So that is the reason government has taken this issue.
01:30How is the government planning to do this?
01:31Will there be a regulation?
01:32Will there be a legislation?
01:34Who is going to moderate it?
01:35Or will you write to all the social media companies
01:38asking them to ensure that the age is verified?
01:40No, that needs to be, you know, formulated.
01:45And what way the government's intention is this,
01:49that has been announced.
01:50Let us see how it will get implemented.
01:53First of all, they have thought of the banning the social media
01:57for the below the age of 116.
02:01At least the thinking is good, but probably without a right preparation
02:05or homework, they have come out for it only for the namesake of the headlines.
02:11But without having any concern or plan or detailing has not been done.
02:16as usual of this Congress government, it's only headlines.
02:22But when it comes to the addressing the need or necessity of the society,
02:29they have completely failed.
