00:03Tonight on MasterChef.
00:06MasterChef!
00:08Across America, thousands of amateur cooks lined up for the opportunity of a lifetime.
00:14I'm a software engineer.
00:15I'm a mother of three children.
00:16I'm an attorney.
00:17I'm a construction worker.
00:18I'm a physician.
00:19Only a select few were invited to Los Angeles to cook for three of the toughest figures
00:23in the culinary world.
00:25I'm Graham Elliott from Chicago.
00:27At 27, I became America's youngest four-star chef.
00:31My name is Joe Bastianich.
00:33I own 20 of America's best restaurants and three award-winning Italian wineries.
00:38And of course, there's me, Gordon Ramsay.
00:41I have 28 restaurants worldwide, earned 12 Mission Stars, and no one knows more about
00:48food than I do.
00:50Now the tryouts are over.
00:52Come on, guys.
00:53Raise your game.
00:54The first person is now leaving.
00:5630 finalists faced their first head-to-head challenge.
01:00How bad is it?
01:01Do we need stitches?
01:02Ooh.
01:03I need all three of you to untie your aprons.
01:07Unfortunately for half of them, the dream of a lifetime ends today.
01:12Whoa, whoa, whoa.
01:13As they continue their quest to fulfill a lifelong dream.
01:17But only one will win a quarter of a million dollars, a cookbook deal, and become America's
01:23first...
01:26...master chef.
01:34As the contestants arrive to meet the judges, they have no way of knowing just what's in
01:39store for them.
01:41Each one of us has got a scratch ticket with $250,000 and a cookbook on it.
01:45Only one of us is gonna get that winner.
01:48It could be anybody.
01:49But there's gonna be some tough competition ahead for sure.
01:54The question is, who will make the cut?
02:06Welcome.
02:08Now clearly, you've all earned the right to wear that apron.
02:12Today's task will determine whether you deserve to keep it or not.
02:16And before we make any cuts, you will be making a truckload.
02:34To progress in the competition, these contestants need to prove they have the basic culinary techniques
02:39necessary to become a master chef.
02:50Oh my goodness, it's onions.
02:54My first month in Paris, at the age of 22, I got my butt kicked for 15 hours a day,
03:00six
03:01days a week, chopping onions.
03:02Why?
03:03Because I need to understand how to really seriously master it.
03:07A humble onion.
03:08If you can't cut an onion, you have no place being in the kitchen.
03:13The root clearly holds the onion together.
03:16Take that off.
03:16Let the knife do the work.
03:18Transparent.
03:19Nice and thin.
03:20When it gets too high, turn it down and make your life easier all the way to the end.
03:28I was thinking, okay, I'm gonna need to see that like about 10 more times.
03:32By the end of the day, over half of you won't be in this competition.
03:36And your dream would have disappeared.
03:39Chopping onions may seem simple, but it's the perfect test to spot the potential master
03:44chefs and eliminate the wannabes.
03:47Right now, I'm a waiter at a restaurant.
03:49I recently left a career in radio sales.
03:52I was making a lot of money, but I had to stay true to myself and pursue my dream of
03:56cooking.
03:56It's time for me to blossom as this professional cook that I know that I am.
04:02I own my own law practice.
04:04I walked away and put that on hold to be able to do this.
04:07So there's a lot at stake for me.
04:09The opportunity for me to cook instead of turn a wrench is a great opportunity.
04:18All of you are gonna chop until I tell you to stop.
04:22When I tell you to stop, you'll find out whether you're staying or going home.
04:27If we're gonna be judged today on actual technique, I'm going home.
04:34Right.
04:34Your first serious test starts right now.
04:38Off you go.
04:38Let's go.
04:45The judges are looking for perfectly consistent slicing and dicing with minimum waste of onion.
04:51Guys, the more evenly they're cut, the more evenly they cook.
05:00Unbelievable.
05:0130 seconds in, they've cut.
05:02They've already cut themselves.
05:03Do we need stitches?
05:06Unbelievable.
05:07Stop.
05:08You've cut yourself.
05:09Medic, please.
05:10Tension is running high.
05:12Less than a minute into the challenge, four people have already sliced their fingers.
05:16But the pressure is not letting up.
05:22Stop.
05:24Stop there.
05:33Chopping onion is about consistency.
05:35Look at that.
05:36It's not even chopped.
05:37I've got half onions.
05:40Is that what we showed you?
05:42No, it is not.
05:42No.
05:43I'm sorry I let you down.
05:44Yeah, you haven't let me down.
05:45You let yourself down.
05:46You're out of the competition.
05:53Come on, guys.
05:54Raise your game.
05:55The first person is now leaving.
05:58I may look at the process of chopping onions slightly differently, but I will continue cooking, continue pursuing and learning
06:05how to become a better cook.
06:12Stop, Ryan.
06:13Right there.
06:13Knife down.
06:14Will 23-year-old dock worker Ryan be the first to make it through the onion chop?
06:21Is that you at your best?
06:24No, Chef.
06:24Talk to me, please.
06:25Is that you at your best?
06:26I've got bits of chopped onion, sliced onion.
06:29That's in the dice ball right there.
06:30And bits of onion that stuck together.
06:32That is not good enough.
06:34Please leave the competition.
06:43Stop.
06:45Right there.
06:51That is exactly what we're looking for.
06:58Congratulations.
06:59You're through.
07:00Well done.
07:01I was absolutely super excited.
07:03Really happy.
07:05Four more contestants will be eliminated, but this challenge is especially tough on 28-year-old
07:10Darrell.
07:11Of my culinary arsenal, my knife skills are my weakest link.
07:15I was born with a very rare growth defect called ectrodactyly, and I only have three fingers on each chain.
07:20So I knew that this was going to be a daunting challenge.
07:24Stop it.
07:25I was incredibly nervous.
07:32You've got a bowl here of perfectly sliced, beautiful onions.
07:41The dice looks great.
07:42Incredible.
07:42And the fact that you're doing that with three fingers on each hand is mind-blowing to me.
07:48It's an inspiration.
07:49You're in.
07:50Great job.
07:50Well done.
07:51Over there.
07:51Good job.
07:53Unbelievable.
07:54Daryl is the second contestant to advance.
07:57Well done.
07:58You're through.
07:59Followed by several more yeses.
08:01Congratulations.
08:03Congratulations.
08:04Well done.
08:04You're through.
08:05Good job.
08:06Get over there.
08:07Yeah!
08:08If you need any form of inspiration, have a look behind you.
08:11Great.
08:13Congratulations.
08:14You're through.
08:14Well done.
08:16Let's go.
08:17Up you go.
08:18Well done.
08:28Come on, guys.
08:31Energy, energy, energy.
08:33They were pulling people off the line, but I didn't even look up.
08:36I wanted to be one of the people going to the stage.
08:43Stop.
08:55I had crazy butterflies in my stomach and I got to ask you.
08:55Joe, unfortunately, it's a no.
08:58I'm very disappointed.
09:00I love to cook.
09:01Thanks for sharing your story with us.
09:02This was an opportunity to do something, you know, unreal.
09:06Joe's the third elimination.
09:07Three more will be asked to hand over their aprons and leave MasterChef.
09:14Stop.
09:16I had crazy butterflies in my stomach,
09:18and I was just scared, but ready.
09:21I had my game face on.
09:24That's the bowl of chopped onion.
09:26Is your sliced?
09:27Yes.
09:32You're going through.
09:33Congratulations.
09:34Well done.
09:35Off you go.
09:39Stop right there.
09:42How many times have you cooked yourself?
09:43Roughly twice.
09:45Twice.
09:48Look.
09:49Chunks.
09:50Look.
09:50The skin is in there.
09:54Scott, not good enough.
09:56Sorry.
09:58It's sad.
09:59I was hoping to go the distance.
10:01For me, I'll just go right back into the kitchen
10:03and enjoy what I do.
10:04You can never take the love of food or cooking away.
10:07In fact, this only enhanced a bit.
10:13You've been chopping onions now for nearly 90 minutes.
10:17Keep that stamina going.
10:18Come on.
10:19Come on.
10:20Come on.
10:20Come on.
10:21And stop right there.
10:22You're through.
10:23Yes!
10:24Yes!
10:25Yes!
10:26Yes!
10:26Yes!
10:26Yes!
10:26Yes!
10:26Yes!
10:27Yes!
10:29Yes!
10:31Yes!
10:33Yes!
10:36Yes!
10:36Yes!
10:38Yes!
10:40Yes!
10:44Yes!
10:45I was patting pretty hard at that moment.
10:48You are going through.
10:50Well done.
10:55After more than 90 minutes chopping,
10:57just two contestants remain.
10:59Only one of them can stay in the competition.
11:02When it came down to just us, you know,
11:03I just had to have faith that no matter how many people
11:06was up behind me in the winning circle,
11:08there was still one spot left for me.
11:10I knew it was down to the wire.
11:12I knew it was just us last.
11:13I want to win.
11:17Coming up, the final cut.
11:20Both of you, stop.
11:22And the next challenge is hatched.
11:25Your future will be determined on how
11:28well you cook one stunning single egg.
11:39Two cooks remain.
11:41But after more than 90 minutes of chopping,
11:43and only one will continue to the next round.
11:52Both of you, stop.
12:17First of all, both of you have been cutting the longest.
12:20Over 90 minutes.
12:22Only one of you is going through.
12:28Holly.
12:34You're not.
12:35I'm so sorry.
12:41I love to cook.
12:43I'm very passionate about food and being creative with food.
12:48I've learned things that I never thought I would learn from other people.
12:53So that experience just in itself has been amazing.
12:56This competition is not going to stop me from a passion and desire that's in my heart at all.
13:01Well, that's life.
13:03That's life.
13:08Right, let's go, guys.
13:09Quickly, let's go.
13:09All of you.
13:11All of you.
13:11The remaining 24 contestants get no time to rest.
13:15The judges move on to the next challenge where more will be eliminated.
13:20We know you can chop under pressure.
13:23What I want to see next is what you can cook under pressure.
13:37Let's go.
13:47Wow.
13:53I do feel confident going into the egg challenge.
13:56I love eggs.
13:57And I cook with them all the time.
13:59Behind me, there are 20,000 eggs.
14:05But your future will be determined on how well you cook just one stunning single egg.
14:18These next 30 minutes will determine who's staying and who's going home.
14:24Anyone can cook a three-minute egg.
14:25A master chef is defined by what they do with the other 27 minutes.
14:31And to help you with that dish, you can choose from any ingredients from the spread you see back here,
14:36which features a bounty of everything from local organic vegetables to smoked salmon.
14:41Yes.
14:42Make sure this egg shines.
14:44Make sure this egg shines.
14:44And it's the hero of this dish.
14:46Yes?
14:46Yes, yes.
14:47Yes, yes.
15:14What's the most commonplace?
15:32I love it.
15:32Yeah, I love it.
15:32You see cinnamon?
15:34Cinnamon? With eggs?
15:36Anybody buy a shallot? I'd love a shallot if anyone's gone.
15:38Oh, they're down there. They're down there. Over there on the left.
15:40Great. I'll never forget. The egg is the star of the dish.
15:44Let the other ingredients be the supporting characters.
15:48Time is of the essence.
15:49The more time the contestants spend picking ingredients, the less time they have to cook them.
15:54Let's go, Dick. Come on. Get your stuff. Get in there.
15:57Tony, throw my basket, man.
16:01Remember, guys, chaos is okay, but it's got to be organized chaos.
16:05You have one egg, one shot. Let's take advantage of it, guys. Come on.
16:10Come on. Come on. What else?
16:12Oh, my God. I'm thinking, what can I do with this egg?
16:15I can poach it. I can scramble it. I mean, I can hard boil it. I can soft boil it.
16:18Okay, what would I do? What should I do? What can I do? What should I do? What can I
16:21do? What should I do?
16:22My mind is just... My mind's going 1,000 miles an hour.
16:25Time is... Right now is killing me.
16:35The contestants were given 30 minutes and just one egg to create the dish of a lifetime.
16:41Because at the end of this challenge, more cooks will be eliminated.
16:45I am making whipped potatoes, little steak sliced, fanned out, poached egg, red wine mushroom sauce. Fantastic brunch food, let
16:54me tell you.
16:55There's a lot that could go wrong with this dish.
16:58I could break the yolk, which if you're poaching an egg, breaking a yolk is... It's done. It's no longer
17:03a poached egg. And then you have, you know, an egg sitting in the water.
17:07Caviar. This guy's going for the big splurge here.
17:09Steaks are super high. You know that they're cutting quite a bit of people. And you know that your dish
17:14cannot have any excuses. It's got to be flawless.
17:1925 minutes left. Five minutes gone.
17:22One egg. One egg. I mean, it's crucial. You only have one chance. And they're so delicate. Huge pressure today.
17:31Whew.
17:34Very simple. I'm making an egg sandwich. Except I'm actually making the bread. It's a Trinidadian flatbread. It's called a
17:40bara. And it's pretty much a basic dough. But it's infused with chilies, garlic, and cilantro.
17:45I'm Jamaican. So my plan is to absolutely bring Caribbean to the egg.
17:51Whitney.
17:52Yes.
17:52What are you doing?
17:53I am making an open-faced BLT.
17:55Gordon suspects that 22-year-old Whitney is making a rookie mistake.
18:00With the smoke coming out there, anything burning in there?
18:02Definitely getting hot. She'll probably turn it down some.
18:04I love to cook. And this is something that I have made a part of my life. I really see
18:10myself making it to the end.
18:12With 24 contestants cooking, there are dozens of different approaches. Slim's dish speaks to her Asian ancestry.
18:20I am making something called pho jiao hok gha guong. It means pan-fried rice noodles with egg in a
18:30roll. They want something innovative. So I might as well go for it, right?
18:33While Slim counts on her culture to help her advance, Sheetal's worried her upbringing could be her undoing.
18:39I'm a Hindu. I was raised Hindu. And I don't eat eggs. I definitely was nervous.
18:44So what are you going to make?
18:45I am making a baked egg with wild mushrooms and shallot and cream.
18:49Okay.
18:50Well, you think you're taking a big risk with doing something so simple?
18:53This is not something I'm used to doing. It's best to do something that is simple.
18:58Okay, guys. 15 minutes left. Halfway there.
19:01You know, I'm really not even focused on what could go wrong. I'm just trying to figure out what's going
19:05to go right.
19:07Adelise earned her apron thanks to following one of her grandmother's recipes.
19:12I'm making a deviled egg with some chipotle shrimp. And I love the heat. I'm glad you guys can tolerate
19:18it.
19:19As Adelise turns up the heat on her dish, elsewhere, literally, sparks begin to fly.
19:25Whoa!
19:25Okay, stop. Don't worry. Stop. Stop. Stand back. Leave it through. Leave it. Just stand back. Give me that. Give
19:30me that. Unbelievable.
19:39It's fine.
19:40They say you can't stand the heat. Get out of the kitchen. But I ain't going nowhere. I'm saying right
19:43here, it's good to have a little sparks flying in the kitchen. Keeps you on your toes.
19:46What we really haven't seen is any kind of three-star execution, any technique that you might have in a
19:51great restaurant in Paris or London or New York.
19:53And no one's poaching the egg in red wine to take it up a different level. There's so many things
19:57to do there.
19:58You could easily do a beautiful scotch egg, too.
20:00Yeah, yeah.
20:00Thinking outside the box, yet still staying true to the egg.
20:03The judges are expecting a very high standard. Now, it's up to the contestants to deliver.
20:10Usually when I crack an egg, I just smack it and break it, and I don't think about the shell.
20:14But this time, the shell is part of my presentation. So, um, here goes nothing.
20:19Yeah, so I see potatoes, steak, mushrooms. The only thing I don't see is the actual competition ingredients.
20:26One thing I am absolutely clear on, and the one thing I know I can do is poach it out.
20:32Five minutes left, everybody.
20:37Here's the moment of truth right here, dropping this egg in.
20:41And I think we're going to be okay here. We'll find out.
20:46Everything was fine in the cooking process. I was right on clock until I got the egg in the oven,
20:52and I realized I picked a dish that was not oven-proof.
20:55And my worst nightmare would have been that dish just cracking in half.
20:59I panicked a little bit, and I ran to the back looking for a larger ramekin. Couldn't find one, and
21:04I knew that clock was ticking.
21:06Guys, you got to get plated food up in two minutes. If you can't do that, I don't know if
21:11you're going forward.
21:15This is unbelievably nerve-wracking.
21:1830 minutes, I was ambitious with this one, I'll tell you.
21:21Last minute, guys. Come on.
21:22Make it count.
21:24The egg has to be the hero.
21:27The most important egg you've ever cooked in your entire lives.
21:31I didn't know if my plating dish would make it, or if I would have a big, runny mess at
21:36the bottom of my oven with no dish to present.
21:3910, 9, 8, 7, 6.
21:48The contestants have been given 30 minutes to cook a single egg dish.
21:53The egg has to be the most important egg you've ever cooked in your entire lives.
21:59I knew that clock was ticking, and I wasn't sure if my dish would survive the heat.
22:03But then I thought, well, just pull your dish out of the oven.
22:06That plate is hot.
22:07Duh.
22:07It's going to continue cooking.
22:0810, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and stop.
22:21Hands up.
22:27This is it.
22:28This is do or die, and we'll just see what's going to happen.
22:31For our contestants, MasterChef means a chance to change their lives.
22:36But for many of them, one bad egg dish will earn them a one-way ticket home.
22:41Let's start tasting the back row first.
22:46Row by row, our amateur cooks will present their dishes and face on-the-spot elimination.
22:56Whitney.
22:58The judges are looking for delicious creations following the simple rule that the egg must
23:03be the hero of the dish.
23:08Brush, light, but just a salad.
23:13Okay, Max.
23:15It's a one-egg tortilla espinal.
23:17What I did was make a cup out of the waxy potatoes and cooked it inside of the potato shell.
23:26Really nice flavors.
23:27I love the rustic approach, but I think the egg is kind of lost.
23:33Slim.
23:35This is pho up jiao ho ga guang.
23:37English.
23:38Translated.
23:39It is a pan-fried rice noodle with egg roll.
23:50I can win.
24:02Max, the egg wasn't good enough.
24:06Take off your apron.
24:07We're out of the competition.
24:10Thank you for your opportunity.
24:12Hi.
24:17Okay, Slim, Whitney.
24:20One of you's in and one of you's out.
24:23a lot is on the line I withdrew from university from this I decided to risk it for my dream
24:30future
24:31winning this competition would be the most amazing thing to ever happen to me and just a dream come
24:38true slim you're in congratulations Whitney unfortunately you're out I was like it was
24:50exhilarating it was absolutely awesome Charmaine I was kind of beaming with pride I pulled off this

25:05and top caviar eggs slightly bland don't quite get the eggshell on the plate Tracy please Tracy
25:19changes course by using her one egg to make the day's only dessert you dichotomize the egg divided
25:26into two components its yolk and it's white I'm impressed by your technical baking ability thank
25:37you thank you Tracy right Jake let's go please this is a stacked bacon and egg dish I poached the
25:45egg did
25:45some infused smashed red potatoes the egg is poached perfectly something very hard to do thank you
25:56okay Charmaine you made the caviar taste better than your scrambled egg which was bland I'm really sorry
26:04you're leaving the competition I'm disappointed I really wanted to have
26:11the opportunity to learn from these guys and I guess maybe next year
26:20Tracy the only one that actually done a dessert was you nice congratulations you're in
26:33okay Jake I couldn't even look him in the eye I'm like looking at the floor I mean like I've
26:37never
26:38been in that position over a plate of food the hero of the dish had to be the egg and
26:43you constructed
26:44it perfectly well well done you're in
26:48great
26:49talk about a wave of emotion so really super intense but just amazing amazing three more amateur cooks
26:58come forward each with a unique approach to cooking a single egg dish but unique doesn't always mean good
27:09the overall dish is a little bit clunky
27:14Adelie's is up next
27:17wow that is hot
27:19no one's going to finish that dish
27:20and things go from bad to worse
27:23your pan was a little too hot
27:25you know it started to crisp up the outside
27:28I don't know
27:28will any of them remain in MasterChef
27:32this is where the
27:34journey ends
27:37you'll all be going home
27:42I'm pretty devastated
27:43I knew to make it to the end
27:44that was going to be a long shot
27:46but I certainly thought I'd be advancing past this round
27:51three more hopefuls come forward
27:53to face the fire
27:54and Chatal still worried that her egg is undercooked
27:59Cheeto
28:01a baked egg and a sauce
28:03made with shallots, mushrooms, cream
28:06and some soldiers
28:07the presentation is nice
28:09I think you can see
28:10the egg is cooked properly
28:12I was shocked

28:15thank God

28:26we have a poached egg
28:27over spinach wrapped
28:29Roblox and potato
28:31when you have a poached egg
28:32the beauty of it
28:33is every time you cook one
28:34you get to kind of break it open
28:36and see
28:36that this is going to spill out
28:43that's gorgeous
28:44thank you chef

29:10with the sweetness
29:11of the brioche
29:13and the size
29:15of the brioche
