A crane in Albion Park Rail has landed on its side, spilling hydraulic fluid and diesel down a driveway and onto the road. Fire and Rescue NSW Duty Commander for the Illawarra, Chad Wallace, spoke to the media. Video by Nadine Morton
Transcript
00:00It was at about 9.30 this morning where police, fire and ambulance received triple zero calls to
00:05a crane that had toppled over here in Albion Park Rail and the initial information was that there
00:10were potential people trapped in that in the crane and also in multiple cars that had been
00:15impacted either driving past or parked so the response was escalated by all fires all services
00:22and that brought around four fire trucks 20 firefighters four ambulances and multiple police
00:29to the scene they quickly assessed and were able to make a determination that no one was trapped in
00:34the crane but the crane had done significant damage to the power infrastructure and the goods that the
00:41crane was trying to move and but the best news for all emergency service workers arriving was
00:47there was no one initially hurt so that meant the incident could then be scaled back where firefighters
00:53have now put up an exclusion zone because we have high voltage power that has been impacted
00:58so we're now standing by to wait for the that power to be isolated and then we'll be able to
01:03take the
01:04incident into a salvage type phase where we know there's about 200 litres of diesel that have spilled
01:10to the road and there's about the same amount of hydraulic fluid that is also spilled because of the
01:16quick action of firefighters they actually were able to dam that and prevent it going into drains
01:22so we're now just moving forward waiting for the the power to get cut off and then we'll be able
01:27to
01:28get in and make the area as safe as we can another issue that the original arriving crews had we
01:35had
01:36multiple businesses impacted people coming onto the streets and high voltage power was live and down on
01:44the ground so that that became the focus of our efforts that we had a potentially fatal consequences of
01:50this incident and that also involved a child care center that was next door and multiple businesses so
01:58those first arriving crews had a sort of dynamic scene where they were assessing a diesel spill
02:03potentially someone trapped and then potentially bystanders being electrocuted by those high voltage lines
02:10now because of the resources that were on scene initially they were able to subdue all of those risks
02:16quite rapidly put up an exclusion zone and that and that then made everyone including bystanders were
02:24safe that'll then let us get in and commence the salvage type operations at this stage look there's
02:30there's a hundred things that could go wrong with a crane lift weight or how far the crane reaches out
02:35those those sort of questions are now the subject of a safe work investigation and they'll be attending
02:40here soon and they'll work out exactly how and why that started and normally give some good advice to
02:45other operators to prevent it happening again you know the people of elbion park rail really dodged a
02:51bullet here with this incident that it could have it could have been serious injuries and the goal will
02:55be working with work safe to make sure it doesn't happen again
