01:26Well, La Mancha is also a place, and it is said to be home to the country's most feared spirit,
01:31the Spanish boogeyman, Tio Camuñez.
01:34Well, let me guess.
01:35That Spanish boogeyman is hanging around the castle today?
01:37According to the owners of the castle, absolutely.
01:39They say that this place is plagued with paranormal activity, and when you dig into the history of the castle,
01:45it's easy to see why.
01:46They say there is no ground in Spain more soaked in blood than Belmonte Castle.
01:56South of Madrid lies the vast plateau known as La Mancha.
02:00It's a savage landscape with a savage history to match.
02:04And nowhere is that violence more apparent than at Belmonte Castle.
02:09Built in 1456 by one of Spain's most famous knights, Don Juan Pacheco, the castle is at the center of
02:16many of Spain's bloodiest battles.
02:19It's glorious chapter begins when French forces invade the Iberian Peninsula in 1807.
02:26More than a million Spaniards die, and the French seize control of Belmonte, turning it into an infamous prison where
02:35hundreds of Spanish fighters are tortured and executed.
02:39The most notorious of these prisoners is Francisco Sanchez, who the French dub Tio Camuñez.
02:46His bloodthirsty rampage wreaked such havoc on French forces, they tremble in fear at the mention of his name.
02:54Today, his violent legend lives on.
02:57Tio Camuñez is known as the Spanish boogeyman, and he's been scaring kids into behaving for centuries.
03:05Some say he still roams the castle looking for more victims.
03:09But the boogeyman isn't the only famous figure said to be haunting its halls.
03:15Wife of Napoleon III, Napoleon Bonaparte's nephew, Empress Eugenia de Montijo, lives in the castle in the late 19th century.
03:24When war breaks out between Britain and the Zulu Kingdom, Eugenia helps get her son, Louis Napoleon, deployed with the
03:31British Army.
03:32When he dies in South Africa at the young age of 23, Eugenia is racked with guilt.
03:39She conducts dozens of seances at Belmonte, desperate to speak with her only child.
03:45Many believe those rituals unlock powerful, dark forces that remain trapped at Belmonte today.

09:19I was at home one night looking at the security camera feeds from all over the castle on my tablet.
09:28The camera in one of the rooms upstairs kept triggering, despite no one being in the castle.
09:36And when I zoomed in for a closer look, I could see the image of a woman dressed in white.
09:43And it looked like she was crossing between rooms.
09:47That's when I took the screenshot.
09:50Then I turned off the tablet and didn't turn it back on for a couple of days.
09:54It freaked me out so much.

09:57And you have a story as well?
10:00My experience happened during the COVID lockdown.
10:05A friend called me at home late one night and said that he could see the castle, and it looked
10:10like a light was left on.
10:13So I drove up here with my family to make sure no one was breaking in or trespassing.
10:20We got here and could not find anyone.
10:22But then I looked up and saw a shadow figure walking around the top of the tower, brushing up against
10:30the stones.
10:32I've never been so scared in my life.
10:35Is that the tower that people have seen a hanging figure outside the window?

10:43Do you all have a theory as to why there's so much activity in this whole castle?

10:54According to legend, Eugenia did rituals and seances to try and make contact with her son who died relatively young.

19:43To me, if that's exactly where people have seen that hanging figure,
19:46and you see a shadow plummeting to the ground, as if someone were trying to escape the tower,
19:51if they ran out of rope, if they lost their grip.
19:53And just fell straight to their death right here.
19:56That could be like a residual haunting.

20:03But we did have the surveillance camera rolling, so we can check that footage, see if we've got anything.

20:23The next day, Phil and I split up to gather more intel on the infamous Tio Comunas.
20:29I've arranged to meet with the mayor of the town of Comunas, Fernando Gallego Vega.
20:35In addition to being mayor, Fernando is also a historian who spent years studying the legend of the Spanish boogeyman.

20:47I am so excited to learn more about Tio Comunas.
20:51Can you tell me more about him?
20:55Tio Comunas was just a normal man in this village, until the French invasion happened in the early 1800s.
21:01Little by little, the French started to take over more parts of Spain.
21:05And when they started to occupy this region, Tio Comunas' brother, Juan Pedro, began to speak out and started to
21:12have issues with the local authorities, who were pro-French.
21:15So Juan Pedro was sentenced to death and killed.
21:18And that's when Tio Comunas wore vengeance against the French.
21:22Wait, so Tio Comunas' brother was killed?
21:25Yes.
21:26How did they kill him?
21:28They were fired.
21:29By a firing squad.
21:34After he died, the French hanged Juan Pedro from one of the windmills just outside of town.
21:41And they left him hanging there for 72 days to show the rest of the villagers what happens to agitators
21:49and dissidents.
21:50That's totally barbaric.
21:54This was when Tio Comunas formed a smart army to fight back against the French.
22:00That sounds like someone trying to save his town, trying to save his country.
22:05It was the French who really changed the history.
22:08Tio Comunas was very much a hero, a freedom fighter, and his fame went very far.
22:13So the French turned his legend into the evil boogeyman that it is today.
22:22While Heather speaks with the mayor, I've arranged to meet a local blacksmith, Julio Ramirez,
22:27who claims he had a paranormal experience that may be connected to Belmonte Castle, and I want to interrogate it.
22:34As I understand it, something happened to you that was incredibly unsettling at a windmill nearby.
22:40Can you walk me through it?
22:44One night, me and a couple of my friends went to go work inside the La Union weed mill on
22:49the edge of town.
22:50As soon as we arrived, something was up.
22:53When we went inside, we felt a sudden, mysterious drop in temperature.
22:58Then, as we were climbing the stairs, we all heard a strange, disembodied voice call out,

23:10There's also a piece of machinery inside the windmill that makes a very particular noise
23:15that is only audible when the windmill is connected.
23:18On this night, the windmill was not in operation.
23:21But we all strangely heard this mechanical noise by gears turning as if it was, in fact, running
23:27while we were in there.
23:30We're here investigating the Belmonte Castle and Tio Camuñas.
23:34Is there a connection there to this windmill?
23:38There's actually a very strong connection.
23:41This windmill is where Tio Camuñas' brother, Juan Pedro, was hanged on display for 72 days.
