00:01Cyclists in the capital are set to be banned from a new pedestrianised area in Oxford Street.
00:07This will close almost a mile of Oxford Street to all traffic including buses, taxis, cyclists
00:12and pedicabs. Between Orchard Street immediately to the west of Selfridges and Great Portland
00:18Street to the east of IKEA. Sir Sadiq Khan has made clear that cyclists will not be permitted
00:23to ride through the pedestrianised area which he hopes will be packed with thousands of
00:27shoppers and tourists. Many cyclists have also welcomed this proposal while demanding that
00:32Transport for London and Westminster Council provide safe alternative east-west cycle routes
00:37to the north and south of Oxford Street. Westminster Council said it had not asked for gates but
00:43confirmed it had recommended a comprehensive hostile vehicle mitigation design. Vehicles
00:49would still be able to cross Oxford Street on a north-south basis including on Regent Street
00:55meaning that gates or barriers would be required at multiple areas throughout the pedestrian
01:00area. Under the proposals delivery lorries would be able to access the street between midnight
01:06and seven in the morning. The mayor has appointed architectural practices Hawkins Brown and East to
01:14work together on the design and delivery of the plans. If all goes according to the mayor's plan
01:21Oxford Street could see pedestrianisation come in by as early as this summer.
