00:00:38I don't do this very often, just sit down and just talk about whatever is on the top of my
00:00:44head.
00:00:45And it's a shame because this is as close as I've come to journaling what it feels like to be
00:00:50in this experience.
00:00:54I had two big dreams when I was little.
00:00:57To be a mother and to have a career as a singer and an actor, which didn't seem unreasonable until
00:01:09I grew up.
00:01:12And it felt like striving for one threatened the other.
00:01:27So I would have to choose or lose everything.
00:01:36And I found myself recording these thoughts.
00:01:43Hi guys.
00:01:45Hi guys.
00:01:46Hi guys.
00:01:47Hi guys.
00:01:47I felt.
00:01:48Why not be so brave as to say hello to the world as Renee and not as a character I
00:01:56play.
00:01:57Who I really am.
00:02:00Who I really am.
00:02:02Who I really am.
00:02:04Here are some of my battles.
00:02:07Lost and won.
00:02:19Hi.
00:02:20We are on Ethiopia Airlines just miles outside at Tisababa to meet Agare for the very first time.
00:02:30My husband and I were having trouble having our second child.
00:02:34We had our son Benjamin and we wanted to adopt.
00:02:38We found this child in Ethiopia and we waited to be able to go and get her.
00:02:43The whole heart wrenching process took almost a year.
00:02:48Finally, we met Hagare Alexis Johnson, that is my daughter.
00:02:54She was very happy.
00:03:03And we were ecstatic.
00:03:10When it was time to go, she had just said goodbye to the women that really were her mothers
00:03:17for the first year of her life.
00:03:25They just kind of sang to her and gave her to me.
00:03:27It was really beautiful.
00:03:32She had no idea she's the miracle that completed us.
00:03:47Benjamin finally has the little sister he's always wanted.
00:03:58When I brought Brielle home, I decided to put my career on hold.
00:04:05And it felt wonderful to have the time just to be at home with my family together.
00:04:23A few weeks had gone by when I got a call to audition for a workshop of a new show
00:04:28called The Hamilton Mixtape.
00:04:34Lin-Manuel Miranda was developing a new rap musical about a historical figure, Alexander Hamilton, and they were auditioning for
00:04:44the part of Angelica Schuyler.
00:04:47One of the leads who falls in love with Alexander Hamilton.
00:04:52They said they were looking for a Nicki Minaj type.
00:04:55It's an ingenue role.
00:04:57And I just thought, I'm probably too old for that.
00:05:01And I'm not going to go to an audition for a workshop of a show that I'm not going to
00:05:06get the part anyway.
00:05:07Look at my life.
00:05:08I have my son and our new baby daughter.
00:05:16Together every moment.
00:05:20Trying to make a dream come true.
00:05:23I said I want everything.
00:05:27You said I want you.
00:05:30Being the parent of an adopted child, you have this plan for all the stuff you're going to do to
00:05:35make sure your child bonds and feels safe with your family.
00:05:41And I only laugh because she attached immediately.
00:05:45She just settled right in like she knew.
00:05:48We were made to be together.
00:05:54I had no desire to go and do a workshop at this time, but Bernie Telsey Casting kept calling.
00:06:02Like, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:06:06Finally, somebody called my manager and said, can she please just listen to the song so we can see if
00:06:12she can rap?
00:06:16Nina said, Renee, just listen to the demo.
00:06:26And then I heard Lin-Manuel Miranda rapping the song Satisfied.
00:06:32Satisfied.
00:06:33Rewind.
00:06:34I remember that night.
00:06:38I have no idea what he is saying he is rapping so fast, but this is the greatest thing I've
00:06:50ever heard in my life.
00:06:52I got to go to this audition tomorrow morning.
00:06:58Now I have a new problem.
00:07:00I got to learn this in a couple hours.
00:07:03I was trying to slow down every single phrase to figure out what he is saying.
00:07:08So, so, so.
00:07:08So this is what it feels like to naturally...
00:07:10So, so, so.
00:07:11So this is what it...
00:07:13I was like, what the hell is the...
00:07:14I was like trying to...
00:07:14So then I would stop and I'd be like, I think that's what he just said.
00:07:17And then I would say it over and over again.
00:07:20I have to memorize it.
00:07:22And then I have to walk into a room and I have to convince all these people that don't know
00:07:27me that I could do this.
00:07:33Oh my God.
00:07:34I'm probably going to embarrass myself.
00:07:47The next morning I went to the audition.
00:07:50It's going to be what it is.
00:07:53And so I went into the room and there they were.
00:07:56Tommy and Lynn and Andy and Alex.
00:08:00They're like the Beatles.
00:08:02I did the song for them.
00:08:05And the big part at the end was really hard to sing.
00:08:10Oh, it was so stressful.
00:08:13I remember coming out like, please, Lord, don't let me lose this job.
00:08:17Please don't let me lose this job.
00:08:23When it comes to my career, I definitely was a successful working actor.
00:08:29I'd been on Broadway a few times.
00:08:32I'd done a lot of television.
00:08:35I was amazed by what I had accomplished, but I wasn't done.
00:08:41There was so much more I had dreamed of doing.
00:08:45But the world just hadn't opened up for me like that.
00:08:52They just asked me to do the workshop.
00:08:56I guess Nicki Minaj was not available.
00:08:58Thank God.
00:09:00Okay, Hamilton, mixtape.
00:09:07The raps unsatisfied her fast.
00:09:09She walked out of there and I went, holy shit, she's so fast.
00:09:14It felt like her mouth racing as fast as her mind.
00:09:18For the first time, the song felt like an evolution of a thought process
00:09:22as opposed to this tricky rap.
00:09:39I met my husband, Alexis Johnson, in church one day.
00:09:43Within about a week, I was ready to elope.
00:09:47As we were falling in love and everything was amazing.
00:09:50I was like, oh my God, this is it.
00:09:51I'm in love and I'm in love.
00:09:53And then I realized, wait a minute.
00:09:55He doesn't even know what I do.
00:09:58It's really important.
00:10:00I know I want him to love me for me, but I also need him to support what I do.
00:10:05Because if he doesn't support what I do, how is this going to work?
00:10:08Because that's part of me too.
00:10:09I mean, it's hard.
00:10:10You have to deal with somebody at two extremes.
00:10:16You have to be the kind of person that can deal with somebody that has no job,
00:10:21no prospect of a job.
00:10:22And then I also needed somebody that, just in case this works out,
00:10:25could just hold my purse over there on the red carpet.
00:10:29Like that's a huge, that's a huge, you know, what kind of person can do both of those things without
00:10:34judgment?
00:10:37This one right here.
00:10:40This one right here.
00:10:41Yeah.
00:10:47I fell in love with Renee before I knew that this talent and gift and, you know, it was kind
00:10:55of like, oh, you act and sing.
00:10:57It was a reveal for me after I had already been in love.
00:11:02So every, it's, every, every kind of show is kind of still like me discovering a, a superhero, right?
00:11:13It's like, you know, we're in here doing what we do, you know, bickering, whatever.
00:11:20And then she goes and, you know, gets in front of folks.
00:11:24So one of my favorite, when I heard Shadowlands.
00:11:27I knew you were going to say that.
00:11:28When I heard Shadowlands and The Lion King.
00:11:31That's crazy. Cause I didn't sing that that well. That's amazing.
00:11:36It brought tears to my eyes.
00:11:42African homeland in the color purple.
00:11:47Oh man.
00:11:52So many songs in Rent.
00:11:57Watching her perform.
00:12:03It's amazing.
00:12:04It's just amazing.
00:12:05So I don't, it's hard to talk about what, what my favorite, I'm just, I'm her person, I guess.
00:12:14Yep.
00:12:31Hold it!
00:12:33Oh, Carly.
00:12:57I'm so excited to be a part of this workshop.
00:13:01I've been in on the ground floor before where you get to build a,
00:13:04a show with a group of people, but this one is different.
00:13:10I've never had to sacrifice so much personally to be in the room.
00:13:14It feels like a huge risk.
00:13:24I want to be a part of this.
00:13:27I don't want to be the weak link.
00:13:29I want to be a value in anything that I'm doing.
00:13:33Alexander!
00:13:36Congratulations.
00:13:37You have invented a new kind of stupid.
00:13:40A damage you can never undo kind of stupid.
00:13:43An open all the cages in the zoo kind of stupid.
00:13:46Clearly, you didn't think this through kind of stupid.
00:13:49Let's review.
00:13:50You took a rumor a few, maybe two people knew and refuted it by sharing an affair of which no
00:13:56one has accused you.
00:13:57I begged you to take a break.
00:13:59You refused to.
00:14:00So scared of what your enemies will do to you.
00:14:02You're the only enemy you ever seem to lose to.
00:14:05You know why Jefferson can do what he wants.
00:14:07He doesn't dignify schoolyard taunts with a response.
00:14:10So yeah, congratulations.
00:14:14Is that it?
00:14:15Yeah.
00:14:18Okay.
00:14:18Great.
00:14:22I'm nervous.
00:14:24It's a very insecure time, the development of a show.
00:14:29I've workshopped many roles that I have not continued to do.
00:14:36But for Angelica, I just, I wanted to originate it.
00:14:43I know for sure that Lynn is very loyal to a lot of friends who could also play this part.
00:14:50Hey!
00:14:51And I always felt, Lynn, who I didn't know that well, he thought, well, she's here right now because she's
00:14:57available to do this workshop and we're probably going to replace her with one of my best friends.
00:15:02If I find out that it was just as a placeholder, if I find out that it was just as
00:15:06a placeholder, it will hurt really, really bad.
00:15:15We went to the public theater to just do a fitting.
00:15:18They were going to make temporary corsets and things for our workshop.
00:15:24And there was a calendar on the wall that was saying Hamilton dates for the off-Broadway run.
00:15:33So I was like, huh, I guess Hamilton is coming here.
00:15:38But no one had mentioned to me or invited me to do it.
00:15:42And that was stressful because I was insecure.
00:15:51It's so tricky when you're workshopping a musical because you fall in love with these actors.
00:15:56They don't all go to the final production.
00:16:00Rene came into a project where three other four actresses had played the part in readings and workshops over the
00:16:08course of this.
00:16:09So I totally understand the anxiety that comes with, I've got it now.
00:16:14I don't want to lose it.
00:16:22All right.
00:16:24All right.
00:16:25Everyone give it up for the maid of honor, Angelica Schuyler.
00:16:30The workshop is over and we're doing the private presentation.
00:16:35I'm singing satisfied.
00:16:36A toast to the groom.
00:16:38To the groom.
00:16:39To the groom.
00:16:40To the groom.
00:16:41To the bride.
00:16:42To the bride.
00:16:43To the bride.
00:16:44While I was flailing and wallowing in my kind of, oh my God, I'm not good enough.
00:16:48I'm messing it up.
00:16:49I'm blowing this song.
00:16:51I happened to look at the audiences on risers in front of us.
00:16:55I could make him mine.
00:16:56She'd say I'm fine.
00:16:58She'd be lying.
00:16:59But when I fantasize at night, it's Alexander's eyes.
00:17:03I happened to catch Lynn's father, Luis Miranda's face, and it is wrecked.
00:17:11He is weeping, looking at me.
00:17:14And I think I just might keep this job.
00:17:18At least Lynn's dad likes it.
00:17:41I haven't heard anything yet about being invited to do the off-Broadway run of Hamilton at the public theater,
00:17:47which is really disappointing.
00:17:51Where are you guys going?
00:17:53Let's go to school.
00:17:55Oh, okay.
00:17:56Bye-bye.
00:17:57Bye.
00:17:57Bye-bye.
00:17:58Come on, Brielle.
00:17:59Let's go to school.
00:18:00The upside is I got time at home with my kids now.
00:18:06Go, Brielle.
00:18:09Did Brielle come up to you with the backpacks?
00:18:11She wants to play school.
00:18:13But it's time to go to bed.
00:18:15It's not time to play school.
00:18:16Yeah.
00:18:17But it was the cutest thing we ever saw.
00:18:19Right, Alexis?
00:18:20So cute.
00:18:21So cute.
00:18:23Bye-bye.
00:18:24Bye-bye.
00:18:25Bye-bye.
00:18:26Bye-bye.
00:18:26Bye-bye.
00:18:27Bye-bye.
00:18:28My joy is this family.
00:18:30Bye-bye.
00:18:31And I'm grateful because my path to motherhood was a real struggle.
00:18:47After trying and failing for three years, I finally had a viable pregnancy.
00:18:56At the time, I was doing double duty.
00:19:01So I would wake up in the morning and shoot one life to live.
00:19:05I'm okay.
00:19:06How are you?
00:19:09Then rushed down to perform The Color Purple on Broadway.
00:19:14I played Nettie, so I was only in it for about 20 minutes or so.
00:19:21They had been growing my dresses throughout the run.
00:19:24The cast was all very excited for me.
00:19:29The magazines leaked the news, so I got all these baby presents.
00:19:35I was five and a half months pregnant.
00:19:42And then, this day.
00:19:45I went home, went to bed, and I don't know, sometime in the middle of the night, I woke up,
00:19:50and I went to the bathroom.
00:19:53I looked down.
00:19:55I saw, like, a little bit of a sack coming out.
00:20:00And I just started screaming.
00:20:03My husband woke up to me screaming in our very little apartment.
00:20:09My doctor said, go to the hospital.
00:20:14When we got there, they said that the pregnancy was gone.
00:20:22I have a cousin who lost a baby at seven months, and I knew that the safest thing was for
00:20:30me to actually deliver the baby.
00:20:33And I knew that she had done that.
00:20:36So I called her on the phone, and she answered, and I said, how do I do this?
00:20:42And she talked me through it.
00:20:44She said, you're going to feel this.
00:20:45You're going to feel really cold.
00:20:46They're going to do this.
00:20:47You're going to do this.
00:20:48And you're going to be okay.
00:20:50And, um, and I was.
00:20:54And we, my husband and I, we made it through it.
00:21:05It was really hard for me to have children, and we couldn't figure out why.
00:21:10I mean, I would go to these doctors, and they just couldn't find anything wrong with me or Alexis.
00:21:17Even our big IVF didn't work.
00:21:21I had already had five miscarriages, at least, that I'm aware of.
00:21:27I used to get really upset because people used to always say,
00:21:31Renee, you work so hard.
00:21:32You just need to rest.
00:21:34You can have that baby.
00:21:36Oh, it used to, it used to hurt me so bad when people said that.
00:21:43A few years later, I got a call saying they were closing Rent on Broadway and filming the last performance.
00:21:51And that they wanted to cast me as Mimi.
00:21:54It was crazy because it was the last three months of the show.
00:21:57And every Mimi that ever existed was going to be in the house watching me do this show.
00:22:04And all the Rent heads who knew it better than everybody.
00:22:07And I had two weeks to learn how to be Mimi.
00:22:14And it was closing night.
00:22:16And I'm in the bathroom.
00:22:18Are you fucking kidding me?
00:22:20I'm getting my period.
00:22:23They're going to fill me in Rent in these blue pants and I'm on my period.
00:22:27Like, talk about what secrets women have to deal with.
00:22:30Like, this is, I literally sat in the toilet and like, really, God?
00:22:34Really?
00:22:37I've had a nap from way back.
00:22:40I'm breaking the rules once I turn the game.
00:22:44So get up.
00:22:44In the middle of this most stressful closing performance of Rent, the bleeding stopped.
00:22:51Yeah!
00:22:56Back in my head, I know that there's something called implantation bleeding.
00:23:00Which is like a spotting that happens when, you know, this little thing is like traveling through your uterus and
00:23:07it implants.
00:23:08And so you just have the slightest bit of blood.
00:23:10You think it's the beginning of a period and then it's gone.
00:23:12And so I thought in the back of my head, hmm, am I pregnant?
00:23:17But then I just put it out of my head.
00:23:23We did the closing performance.
00:23:25It was a triumphantly beautiful, emotional night.
00:23:31And I went home and peed on a stick and I was pregnant.
00:23:37It was Benjamin!
00:23:40Oh my God.
00:23:41It was Benjamin.
00:23:44While I was hanging upside down at the Nederlander Theatre,
00:23:47Pregnancy number six.
00:23:51That kid held on.
00:23:56Hallelujah!
00:23:58That kid held on.
00:24:01Just getting bigger every day.
00:24:04So exciting.
00:24:06Every day you're just counting off till you meet this kid.
00:24:1238 weeks.
00:24:13My dad flew in.
00:24:15My mom flew in.
00:24:16My brother flew in.
00:24:22My mom flew in.
00:24:33My brother flew in.
00:24:36And I just started, like, hyperventilating.
00:24:39He's okay.
00:24:40He's okay.
00:24:41It's real.
00:24:42He's here.
00:24:43He's okay.
00:24:44He's perfect.
00:24:45It's okay.
00:24:46It's amazing.
00:24:55Happy Birthdays to you.
00:25:00Happy Birthdays to you.
00:25:04Ha ha ha ha.
00:25:06Happy Birthdays.
00:25:07Happy Birthdays dear Benjamin.
00:25:11Happy birthday to you
00:25:22We celebrated Benjamin's fifth birthday with all of our friends and family this week
00:25:27and I finally heard about Hamilton.
00:25:32I went to see Tick Tick Boom at the city center last night
00:25:36and Lynn pulled me into his dressing room
00:25:39and he had a very expensive tequila.
00:25:44He poured two shots, handed me one, and toasted me saying,
00:25:50let's go change the world.
00:25:54I'm going to be in Hamilton at the public!
00:26:00Introducing a big sensation
00:26:03A critic, darling
00:26:06A revelation
00:26:09Love you!
00:26:11I love you!
00:26:12AHHHH!
00:26:15All right, where's she?
00:26:16Bye!
00:26:18Bye!
00:26:20Bye!
00:26:23Bye!
00:26:25Bye!

00:26:30We're starting rehearsals for the off-Broadway run.
00:26:34Bye!
00:26:35Bye!
00:26:36Bye!
00:26:36Bye!
00:26:37Bye!
00:26:38My life at home is totally different than almost everybody else's
00:26:41because I'm the only mom in the cast.
00:26:47I'm not home for bath time or to kiss the kids goodnight.
00:26:52So all I get is every single morning before I go to work.
00:26:56And no matter how tired, how exhausted, you get up and you get that gold.
00:27:02If you're happy and you know me, you guys will really show it.
00:27:06If you're happy and you know me, clap your hands.
00:27:08Oh, my God.
00:27:13And thanks.
00:27:38Thanks.
00:27:38this show. It wasn't lost on any of us that this show was so good. We all just won the
00:27:49lottery.
00:27:56And I feel valued in this family. But at the same time, I was feeling like I have so much
00:28:02to do
00:28:03to make sure I'm pulling my own weight and that I'm also adding value at that level for this
00:28:10awesome opportunity. The bar in my head was always like, this is so good. It's got to be better.
00:28:24It can be better.
00:28:31There is so much real estate in your mind is taken up by what you have to achieve when
00:28:39you go to work. It's a lot in your home and in your family with babies.
00:28:45Thank you, granddad. This cake is good.
00:28:49Yum, yum, yum, yum.
00:28:53You know, I'm not out of town. I'm not gone. But there's a part of me that's always aware
00:29:00that, you know, I have five hours. I have four hours. I have three hours. I have two hours.
00:29:05I have to leave in this many minutes. So even if I'm feeding you, I'm still thinking, you
00:29:10know, in my head, I'm like checking in with my voice and I'm saying to your union, to your
00:29:15union. You know, I'm just like, I keep singing it over and over again.
00:29:18All done. All done. All done.
00:29:23I think I'm just a little bit late.
00:29:26But I love you and I'll be thinking about you all the time when I'm in tech, babe.
00:29:31We're now in tech rehearsals at the public theater. That is a very intense part of the
00:29:36final rehearsal process. The days are 12 hours long. A lot of the load is being passed to
00:29:43Alexis. He's an attorney. After he gets home from work, he's on active dad duty until bedtime.
00:29:52I'm going to open it. I'm going to open it for you, Biel. I'm going to open it.
00:30:03Working on a show like this has been humbling beyond belief and invigorating and to have
00:30:12found people to march with along the way. This cast, I cannot wait for everybody to experience.
00:30:19I feel like we all have this secret right now. And what we want to do is share it.
00:30:25We're going to build something that's much bigger than all of us. And I'm really happy to be here today.
00:30:42I am in love with every single person in this company, which is good because we are spending a lot
00:30:52of time together.
00:31:00Every single day, we reach a new level of success and of depth in the show, because the joy of
00:31:09giving birth to it is bonding us.
00:31:16Eat your lunch quickly. We're going to play video games 4K for an hour.
00:31:23I'm so happy and so tired and I feel so loved and so supported and, um, and I feel like
00:31:36I'm always standing on the edge of a cliff about to jump off and praying that my parachute will open.
00:31:51everything's already on the side.
00:31:57True.
00:31:57I feel so happy.
00:31:58I feel so happy.
00:31:59That's where the길's right and it's on.
00:32:12It's beautiful.
00:32:16It happens when people have knocked down.
00:32:17I Dong averished a little tin about tomorrow.
00:32:20I love to play in them fades in the green room like every fucking single day.
00:32:26I'm here so that's okay because I can say that I will go through that tomorrow.
00:32:31That's what he sings.
00:32:33I love to play in your life.
00:32:37Hey.
00:32:39Hey.
00:33:05Just like the people in the audience, we were discovering the magnetism of it at the same time.
00:33:12We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.
00:33:17And when I meet Thomas Jefferson, I'ma compel them to include women in the sequel.
00:33:22I just had the most amazing experience of my life.
00:33:26I've never really felt that on stage.
00:33:34It wasn't perfect.
00:33:36It wasn't perfect.
00:33:38But it was amazing.
00:33:42Hamilton opening night.
00:33:43How do you feel to be at this book?
00:33:44It's sad to say goodbye to writing it, but it's such a joy to say hello to getting to be
00:33:49in it every night with this incredible company.
00:33:51We sing at the very end, who lives, who dies, who tells your story.
00:33:54And I don't think they ever imagined that it would be us, which is the best part ever.
00:34:00This is one of those nights where you feel the earth shake a little bit.
00:34:06You feel the world start to change.
00:34:08This is opening night of Hamilton.
00:34:11This is awesome.
00:34:12Congratulations to all of you.
00:34:19After opening.
00:34:22Dressing room three.
00:34:25This is what it looks like after opening night.
00:34:32How about the underwear on the floor?
00:34:36Two days later, it's all still here.
00:34:39But look at all the love.
00:34:40Look at all the love, guys.
00:34:41It smells like a garden.
00:34:43It still smells good.
00:34:43Even though it looks like a trash heap.
00:34:45I know.
00:34:48Hamilton.
00:34:48Anyone seen this play yet?
00:34:50Yeah, exactly.
00:34:51That's how new it is.
00:34:53It's called Hamilton.
00:34:54It's a musical, but it's like Alexander Hamilton rapping.
00:34:57I don't know how to describe it.
00:34:59It's life changing.
00:35:00Genius.
00:35:00Yeah.
00:35:01We'll never go out of style.
00:35:03We'll never go out of style.
00:35:12We were extended three times.
00:35:17Every day was further proof that what we believed was great was really great.
00:35:24We're dreaming big now.
00:35:27When are we going to Broadway?
00:35:35I'm really excited and really trying to appreciate all the things that are happening in our lives right now in
00:35:44Hamilton.
00:35:46And at the same time, I'm missing my kids.
00:35:53Hi, Benjamin.
00:35:55Have a great day at school.
00:35:57I forgot to wave at you in the window, but I'm waving now.
00:36:01I love you.
00:36:01Bye.
00:36:02Have a great day.
00:36:06Hi, Mommy.
00:36:08I love you.
00:36:09I can't wait to see you.
00:36:12And I hope you look so pretty.
00:36:23You ready?
00:36:25Yeah.
00:36:26Get set?
00:36:27Yeah.
00:36:31Hi, Mommy.
00:36:34I took a bath and I'm not going to bed because I wanted to do FaceTime with you.
00:36:46Sometimes it just seems like there are balls that are dropping.
00:36:50A lot of them.
00:36:54And I think there's always a lot of guilt about what you're not getting done or who you're letting down.
00:37:04I think sometimes that overrides everything that's great that's going on.
00:37:15Is the sacrifice worth it?
00:37:18And who is paying the price?
00:37:40The schedule is challenging.
00:37:42We have a lot of help.
00:37:45We're just constantly trying to figure out who to, who can come.
00:37:50But you tell them about the weekends, babe.
00:37:53Well, I love my kids and they need to be taken care of.
00:37:56And I take care of my kids.
00:37:59Have I fallen asleep reading a book?
00:38:01Sure.
00:38:03It's great being a dad.
00:38:05It's just time alone with the kids and highly satisfying, to be honest.
00:38:09Um, so, there's no resentment.
00:38:15It's, um, we're trying to have a house where everybody thrives, you know?
00:38:20There's a part of me that doesn't want Renee to see it be a burden.
00:38:24Because I know she's already feeling the tension of wanting to be here with the family and also, um, have
00:38:31her career.
00:38:32And my thinking about it is like, hey, if you're going to be there, be fully there and knock the
00:38:38thing out.
00:38:39And don't be thinking about that we're suffering.
00:38:41I literally get messages like, if you're going to do it, do it.
00:38:44If you're going to do it, do it.
00:38:44If you're going to do it, do it.
00:38:46Don't be like, oh, I wish I was home. I'm sad.
00:38:48If you were sad, then come home.
00:38:52If there was no passion for whatever project was making her out of the home, that would have been more
00:38:58difficult.
00:38:59Because then I don't think I would have had the energy, right?
00:39:01I don't think I would have had the inspiration.
00:39:03But knowing that she is being fulfilled, she's working her craft and being affirmed, makes me very happy.
00:39:09It's a labor of love, you know? It's really a labor of love, so.
00:39:14I feel guilty all the time.
00:39:19But sometimes more than feeling guilty, I feel like I'm missing out.
00:39:24Just the hour before you go to bed is the best thing in the world.
00:39:28And it's sad to miss sometimes.
00:39:31Most of the time.
00:39:36But no matter how hard or challenging it is,
00:39:39I never thought, for a moment, I wish I wasn't in this.
00:39:47I don't want to change a thing.
00:39:51I'm living a dream higher than I had ever anticipated.
00:40:00You know what's so funny?
00:40:03They're like this.
00:40:07The Sesame Street people.
00:40:09Yes.
00:40:10I know.
00:40:13Happy birthday, Renee.
00:40:1544.
00:40:24On Sunday, tickets go on sale for Broadway, Hamilton, Richard Rogers Theatre.
00:40:31Be there.
00:40:31Thank you for coming this afternoon.
00:40:49Finally, we are going to Broadway.
00:40:52And I have this secret.
00:40:57Well, I am pregnant.
00:40:59I am pregnant at the public theater.
00:41:03It's official.
00:41:04They don't even want me to go back to get another test until like three months.
00:41:08Because that's how good my levels are for the first time in my life.
00:41:21I'm hurt.
00:41:21You okay?
00:41:22Okay, I just can't sleep.
00:41:24What's going on?
00:41:26We were not trying.
00:41:28And it had been so hard.
00:41:31And I was 44.
00:41:33And I could not believe the irony.
00:41:38So I tell Alexis, I'm pregnant.
00:41:43And he's like, really?
00:41:46And I'm like, yeah.
00:41:48Wow.
00:41:55Where's your ear?
00:41:57Where's your tummy?
00:42:00Where's your...
00:42:00Yay!
00:42:02Where's your mommy?
00:42:03Where's your mommy?
00:42:04Where's your mommy?
00:42:07Where's your mommy?
00:42:10What I was doing in my life was raising the children I have and trying to give birth to
00:42:16Hamilton and I thought I was finally getting my feet underneath me for how to do it.
00:42:25And I just kept doing the math in my head.
00:42:31By the time this show opens on Broadway, I'll be too far along in my pregnancy.
00:42:44It's clear I'm gonna have to leave the show.
00:42:51How do I say goodbye to Hamilton after all of this?
00:43:08I kept the secret for a number of weeks and it really weighed on me.
00:43:13There's no question.
00:43:15I'm gonna have this baby.
00:43:23I'm naming this baby Tony.
00:43:25I'm naming this baby Tony.
00:43:27And if it's a girl, it's gonna be an I on the end.
00:43:30And if it's a boy, it's gonna be a Y.
00:43:32But Tony is in the name because I could be holding this one or I could be holding this one.
00:43:38And this is what it's gonna be and I'm gonna be happy about that.
00:43:41Wow!
00:43:44Let's do it one more time!
00:43:45Work, work, I'm looking for.
00:43:47Minded work, work, work, minded work.
00:43:51I'm looking for a minded work, work.
00:43:53I'm looking for a minded work, work.
00:43:55I'm looking for a minded work, work.
00:44:05This show is once in a lifetime, and this cast has become my family.
00:44:12It's going to kill me to have to walk away, but it's time.
00:44:20I was finally ready to call my boss, Jeffrey Seller, and tell him I had to leave the show.
00:44:28I've had this appointment with my doctor for an ultrasound, just to see the development of the baby.
00:44:33And the monitor pops up, and the image of my uterus pops up on the screen.
00:44:41And I hear his voice trying to find the ways to tell me,
00:44:47this one isn't going to happen.
00:44:54Our sorrow
00:44:56The wise hand opens slowly
00:45:01To lilies of the valley
00:45:06And tomorrow
00:45:09This is what it means
00:45:13To be held
00:45:16And to feel
00:45:18When the sacred is torn
00:45:21From your life
00:45:23And you survive
00:45:26This is what it means
00:45:29To be loved
00:45:32And to know
00:45:34That the promise was
00:45:37When everything fell
00:45:41We'd be held
00:45:46We'd be held
00:45:47We'd be held
00:45:47We'd be held ourselves
00:45:49We'd be held ourselves
00:45:51It's the first time in my life where I felt
00:45:55This is okay
00:45:56This is okay
00:45:58Because I have my Benjamin
00:46:00And my Brielle
00:46:04And so I went back to work
00:46:09It is the single hottest ticket

00:57:48to pick up some white people
00:57:51on the street that had just seen the show
00:57:53and i lost my mind
00:57:58so mind you
00:57:59now angelica schuyler

00:58:20so i really didn't have to do all that
00:58:21but it was the principle of the matter

00:58:33it is 2016 something
00:58:38tuesday
00:58:38what's the date jasmine
00:58:39what's the 14th
00:58:42i've played this role hundreds of times
00:58:44and yet i'm feeling increasingly out of control
00:58:47it just feels like everything is black
00:58:49except for a spotlight in your face
00:58:52that stresses me out
00:58:54at some point my brain started moving faster
00:58:57than my mouth
00:59:00just messed up my rap and satisfied
00:59:03i mean sometimes like one word will come out wrong
00:59:07and i'll be devastated
00:59:08but this was an actual flub of a huge line
00:59:12and hard to get back on
00:59:17broadway's biggest hit with a record
00:59:2016 nominations
00:59:21one of those belongs to renee lise goldsberg
00:59:25i've never had to do a tony run
00:59:29where you have to be good every night
00:59:31for potentially people voting on you
00:59:33as opposed to just being good in general
00:59:37there's a lot of pressure
00:59:41thank goodness the tony voting is almost over
00:59:47sometimes now when i'm being shook
00:59:48i keep like having like panic attacks
00:59:51throughout the number
00:59:52you you created this role
00:59:54and you know what you're doing
00:59:56you've been doing it for so long
00:59:58that sometimes your body goes through these phases
01:00:01where it starts to panic a little bit
01:00:04letting everyone down
01:00:06oh god holy hell
01:00:08running down the street
01:00:09running to the train

01:02:05i fell in love with theater here
01:02:13before i was a mother looking at her daughter and being very proud of her daughter
01:02:17but in south pacific i really became the audience watching someone who was really great
01:02:24really that absolutely transformed me and i would never have expected them to cast a brown girl
01:02:32then i was sitting there watching you and i said well that's why

01:03:47going to have to deal with me calling you all the time to get tickets for my friends.
01:04:01It's been crazy.
01:04:03It's so good to be with the kids and rest.
01:04:05I know you're feeling a little burnt out right now, but you got this.
01:04:18I'm on my way to see my high school drama teacher.
01:04:22He was the first one to cast me in a non-traditional role, and that really gave me confidence.
01:04:31And I need it now.
01:04:33Look who's here.
01:04:37March 1989.
01:04:41It's so good to see you.

01:05:42You were looking for Nellie Forbush, and Renee came in.
01:05:46What was it about her that struck you?
01:05:49Response.
01:05:50It's obvious.
01:05:52Everything.
01:05:54Go and wash that man right out of my hair.
01:05:58Go and wash that man right out of my hair.
01:06:00Go and wash that man right out of my hair.
01:06:03Send him on his road.
01:06:05To my surprise, I was cast as the lead.
01:06:08My life has not quite been the same since.
01:06:12I just remember being happy to be up there singing and dancing and feeling like,
01:06:16Oh, I remember this Renee, because she had been gone a couple years.
01:06:21Uh-huh.
01:06:21I was, you know, I was being a high school student, and I had forgotten that this was my first
01:06:25love.
01:06:26And the people that see you can't resist, and you get cast again and again and again.
01:06:40Keep going.
01:06:43I love you.
01:06:46I love you too.
01:06:53I love you too.

01:09:02I like this in this shirt.
01:09:04He just sewed.
01:09:11My husband is amazing.
01:09:32I'm in my room in between shows.
01:09:35And we're about seven or eight days from the Tonys.
01:09:40You can see the bottom of my Tony dress.
01:09:42Sneak peek!
01:09:43Woohoo!
01:09:44Ugh!
01:09:45It's a lot of pressure and a big opportunity.
01:09:52And it's very bonding because everybody's going through this.
01:09:57And there's also an opportunity to celebrate being in the moment and to savor these last
01:10:10few weeks of being in the show together with people that I love very, very, very, very much.
01:10:17Sisters.
01:10:18We don't need to search the stars for answers.
01:10:23That whole thing is the cat.
01:10:26We don't need to read the cards.
01:10:30They have a new photo.
01:10:30What did you?
01:10:31Okay, yo.
01:10:32That's easy.

01:12:41And lastly, I would just love to say that if you know anything about me, I've spent the last ten
01:12:46years of my life what some would consider the lifeblood of a woman's career just trying to have children.
01:12:54And I get to testify in front of all of you that the Lord gave me Benjamin and Brielle and
01:13:00then he still gave me this.

01:20:53Right

01:23:17The public theater has cast me and my kids in a show.
01:23:23My two dreams, together.
01:23:31I wrote myself a quote to carry with me
01:23:33from this season into the next.
01:23:37Never forget what God can build
01:23:40in the place of what seems lost.
01:23:43My hand with me
01:23:47Doesn't tell
01:23:49All of who I am
01:23:52Who I really am
01:24:20Heard you gotta move a mountain
01:24:23Here's how you do
01:24:27First you gotta let go
01:24:29Of the lie that it's too big for you
01:24:33When you see a mountain
01:24:35Picture a hill
01:24:36Keep taking one more step until
01:24:40You can look behind you
01:24:42And see how far
01:24:44How high and just how big you are
01:24:48You can grow harder
01:24:50Like a fire starter
01:24:52You can fill any space
01:24:55You can grow taller
01:24:58Make the fear smaller
01:24:59Stare the truth in the face
01:25:02I know that you can
01:25:04I know
01:25:05You will
01:25:08You can do anything
01:25:18If you knew you were gonna win
01:25:21If you knew you were gonna win
01:25:22How would you play
01:25:25If you knew whatever hand you would out
01:25:28The game would go your way
01:25:31You would play bolder
01:25:33Cause you would know
01:25:35You had more than what might show
01:25:38Belief gives you courage
01:25:40So find your faith
01:25:42Don't walk soft
01:25:44Don't play safe
01:25:47You can look harder
01:25:49Like a fire starter
01:25:50You can fill any space
01:25:53You can grow taller
01:25:56Make the fear smaller
01:25:58Stare the truth in the face
01:26:00I know that you can
01:26:02I know
01:26:03Do you feel
01:26:07There is a plan
01:26:09Do you feel
01:26:11For you feel
01:26:13You can do anything
01:26:20You can do anything
01:26:30You can do anything
01:26:37You can do anything
01:26:39You can grow taller
01:26:39You can grow taller
01:26:40Make the fear smarter
01:26:41Stare the truth in the face
01:26:44I know that you can, I know you will
01:26:50There is a plan you will fulfill
01:26:56You can do anything
01:27:02You can, you can do anything
01:27:10You can, you can do anything
