00:00Is your PlayStation sounding more like a jet engine than a gaming console?
00:04Don't worry, you're not alone, and the fix is probably easier and cheaper than you think.
00:11That super loud fan noise is usually just a cry for help.
00:15Over time, dust and debris build up inside, clogging the fans and vents.
00:21This makes your console work way harder to stay cool, and that's when the fan goes into overdrive.
00:26Today, I'm going to walk you through a simple step-by-step cleaning guide for both the PlayStation 4 and
00:34the PlayStation 5.
00:36It asks a quick process that can make your console run whisper quiet again, improve its performance, and even extend
00:43its lifespan.
00:44So grab a can of compressed air and a microfiber cloth, and let's get your console back to its quiet,
00:50cool self.
00:51First up, let's tackle the PlayStation 4.
00:53We'll start with the original and the slim models, as the process is very similar.
00:58The most important step before we do anything is safety.
01:03Make sure your PS4 is completely turned off, not just in rest mode.
01:08Then unplug every single cable connected to its power cord, the HDMI, everything.
01:14We don't want any electricity running through it while we work.
01:17Now, place your console on a flat, stable surface.
01:21For the original PS4, you'll see the top cover is split into two sections, one glossy and one matte.
01:27We need to remove the glossy part.
01:30Place your hands on it and apply a little bit of firm, even pressure to slide it away from the
01:34matte section.
01:35It should pop right off.
01:37If you have a PS4 slim, the entire top cover comes off.
01:41Look for the little clips around the edges, gently pry them open, and lift the cover off.
01:46It might feel a bit stiff, but be gentle, and it will release.
01:50With the cover off, you'll see the star of the show, the cooling fan.
01:55It's probably covered in a layer of dust, and the surrounding area will be to...
02:00This is where our cleaning tools come in.
02:02Grab your can of compressed air.
02:04It's crucial that you use it in short, controlled bursts and keep the can upright.
02:09If you tilt it too much, the freezing liquid propellant can spray out and damage the components.
02:14Aim the nozzle at the fan blades and the heat sink fins underneath.
02:18Give it a few good blasts to dislodge all that packed-in dust.
02:21You'll probably see a cloud of it come flying out.
02:24That's a good thing.
02:25Make sure to also spray into the vents along the sides and back of the console to clear those out
02:29as well.
02:30After you've blown out the loose dust, take your microfiber cloth to wipe down the inside surfaces and the fan
02:36itself.
02:36You can also use a soft brush or a Q-dip to get into the tighter spots, but be very
02:41gentle around the fan blades.
02:44You don't want to bend or break them.
02:47Once you're satisfied that it's clean, it's time to reassess.
02:50For the original PS4, just slide the glossy cover back into place until it clicks.
02:55For the slim, line up the cover and press down firmly around the edges to snap it back on.
03:01Now, for the PlayStation 4 Pro, the process is a bit different, but just as simple.
03:06Again, make sure it's completely unplugged.
03:08With the PS4 Pro, we'll be taking off the top panel.
03:12Flip the console over so the bottom is facing up.
03:15At the back, near the ports, you'll see a small plastic tab.
03:20You can use your finger or a small flat tool to gently pry this tab off.
03:26Underneath, you'll find a screw.
03:28This is a hard drive screw, but we need to deal with the top cover.
03:32Flip the console back over.
03:34Place it so the front is facing you.
03:37Put your hands on either side of the top cover and pull upwards and towards you.
03:42It's held in by clips, so you'll hear some popping sounds as it comes loose.
03:47Don't be alarmed.
03:48Just be firm and steady.
03:49Once the top is off, you'll have direct access to that big cooling fan.
03:55Just like with the other models, it's likely going to be quite dusty.
03:59Grab your can of compressed air and, holding it upright,
04:02use short bursts to blow the dust off the fan blades and out of the heat sink.
04:06Work your way around the fan, making sure to get all the nooks and crannies.
04:10Use your microfiber cloth to wipe away any remaining dust on the plastic housing.
04:14When it looks nice and clean, it's time to put the cover back on.
04:17Align it with the console body and press down firmly until you hear all the clips snap back into place.
04:23That's it!
04:24Your PS4 Pro is clean and ready to go.
04:26Alright, now it's time for the new generation, the PlayStation 5.
04:31The design is different, but Sony actually made it even easier to clean.
04:35As always, first things first, power down the console completely and unplug all the cables.
04:41It's especially important with the PS5 to handle it carefully.
04:44You can lay it on its side on a soft surface, like a towel, to avoid scratching the face.
04:50If you have the disk drive version, lay it down with the disk slot facing up.
04:54To get inside, we need to remove those big white face...
04:57Start with the top plate that's, the one without the PlayStation logo.
05:01Gently lift up the corner at the back top of the console, near the ports,
05:05while sliding the plate down towards the base.
05:07You'll feel it unclip, and then it will slide right off.
05:10It can feel a little stiff the first time, but it's designed to be removed.
05:15Now flip the console over, and let's do the other side.
05:18This is the plate, with the PlayStation logo cut out.
05:21The process is the same.
05:23Gently lift the corner at the back top, while sliding the plate down towards the bottom of the console.
05:28And, just like that, it's off.
05:30Now, your PS5 is exposed, and you can see the large cooling fan on one side.
05:37You'll also notice two very interesting little circular holes.
05:41These are the official dust catchers that Sony designed.
05:45They're specifically there to collect dust, which you can now easily clean out.
05:49Grab your compressed air, and give the fan a few good blasts to clear any dust off the blades.
05:54Then, you can actually use a small vacuum cleaner on a low setting over those dust catcher holes to suck
05:58out all the trap dust.
05:59This is a fantastic feature that makes maintenance so much simpler than on previous consoles.
06:05Also, use the compressed air to blow out any dust from the vents along the black central body of the
06:12console.
06:13After you're done, wipe everything down with your microfiber cloth.
06:16Now, let's put it back together.
06:19Take the bottom plate, one with the logo end.
06:22Align the clips.
06:23Slide it upwards towards the top of the console, until you hear a satisfying click.
06:28It's now securely in place.
06:31Flip the console over and do the same with the top plate.
06:34Align it.
06:35Slide it up until it clicks.
06:37And you're all set.
06:39Your PS5 is now clean and ready to provide you with silent, high-performance gaming.
06:44So, what's the big takeaway here?
06:46Whether you have a PS4, a PSC 4 Pro, or a PSC 5, a little bit of regular maintenance can
06:53make a huge difference.
06:54Cleaning out the dust isn't just about stopping that annoying fan noise.
06:59It's about helping your console breathe when the vents and fan are clogged or console overheats.
07:06This forces the internal components to run at higher, more stressful temperatures, which can shorten their lifespan and even lead
07:14to system failures.
07:15Think of it like changing the oil in your car.
07:18It's a simple preventative measure that keeps the machine running smoothly for years to come.
07:23I recommend doing this quick clean every three to six months, depending on how dusty your environment is.
07:30If you have pets or live in a dusty area, you might want to do it more frequently.
07:35It only takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
07:37And as you've seen, it doesn't require any scary technical skills.
07:41Now, after you're cleaning, plug everything back in, fire up your console, and load up a demanding game.
07:47You should immediately notice the difference.
07:49The roar of the jet engine will be replaced by a gentle hum, or maybe even silence.
07:55Your games might even run a little smoother since the system is UNT thermal throttling to protect itself from overheating.
08:01You've just given your beloved console a new lease on life.
08:05Thank you so much for watching.
08:06I hope this guide was helpful, and gives you the confidence to keep your PlayStation in top shape.
