Iran’s war entering its fourth day is being described as unfolding in “smoke and blood” because the fighting has intensified across multiple cities, and the economic shock is now global. The phrase captures both the physical destruction on the ground and the financial fallout spreading outward.
What is happening on the ground
Explosions have struck major cities including Tehran and Beirut, with images showing debris in the streets after U.S.‑Israeli airstrikes on Iranian targets. Iran has responded with missiles and drones aimed at Israel and neighboring Arab states, and it has also targeted shipping routes in the region. These attacks have widened the conflict and increased fears of a prolonged regional war.
The U.S. has continued its strikes against Iran’s leadership and military infrastructure, while Iran calls the campaign an unprovoked attack. The conflict has escalated to the point where the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem has warned it cannot guarantee the safety of American citizens in the region.
