01:52pride a heritage to believe in ambitious politician and world war one veteran adolf hitler is part of a
02:01movement that will provide that belief even if they have to make it up we need a myth we need
02:07we need
02:08origins we need to prove that we are the chosen race the superior ones when the rest of the country

02:13imploding and collapsing around you that has a real potency it's very very attractive
02:21the problem is germany doesn't have a noble ancient heritage
02:27compared with the ancient greeks and ancient rome there is a sort of inferiority complex going on here
02:31because there are very obvious manifestations of that those early civilizations in italy around the
02:38world in ancient greece as well there's remnants of temples there's writings there's democracy and so
02:45on um there's famous philosophers great heroes there's none of that in germany thousands of years after the
02:54egyptians built the pyramids and centuries after the greeks and romans built the acropolis and the
02:59coliseum the german tribes are still living in mud huts in the woods but amongst the sketchy historical
03:08writings on germany there is one useful detail hitler's nationalists can focus on exploiting
03:16the roman historian tacitus pinpoints it in the earliest documented record of the germanic tribes in
03:23the first century a.d tacitus mentions the fact that the german peoples are tall and fair-haired and strong
03:29and blue-eyed and of course this is an ideal of of manhood that the nazis absolutely latch onto
03:36this single mention of its blonde blue-eyed inhabitants will be enough for hitler to use in his quest to
03:43reinvent germany but he will need more myths to build on luckily for him groundwork has already been done
03:52by a group of 19th century mystics among them is russian occultist madame helena blavatsky
04:01madame blavatsky was uh was a mystic who claimed that in a series of meetings in the himalayas in
04:08tibet and so on that she had been given the secrets of the universe and she wrote these down in
04:13a series
04:14of books wildly popular amongst the european middle classes in the early 20th century
04:21blavatsky's the secret doctrine claims that the first settlers of western civilization are a race of
04:28ancient supermen from the lost city of atlantis it is absolute fantasy um but it is taken very
04:38seriously and by serious academics as well there's no scientific basis this is purely nonsense much of
04:46the language used is virtually incomprehensible explain oh lanu the one is an unbroken circle with
04:53no circumference for it is nowhere and everywhere the one is the boundless plane of the circle manifesting
05:00a diameter only during the man vanteric periods thank you madame blavatsky i mean this is the sort of
05:07rubbish that uh that is underpinning the racist philosophies of the 19th century and which led on
05:13to nazism absurd as it seems this occult fantasy laced with a smattering of popular science will be
05:25enough to captivate respectable middle class germans in the dark years following the first world war
05:34it will give them a sense of hope an ancestral myth that they can believe in
05:39and a name that will soon be feared the world over
05:45when linguists discover that a group of languages used across europe and asia are all derived from
05:50a single ancient tongue a question is asked who were these people the noble forefathers of all western
05:58civilization blavatsky believes they're from the same ancient tribe she claims originated from atlantis
06:07the arians and in truth the arians really did exist in ancient times the problem is that they're from
06:18persia of middle eastern appearance not blonde-haired and blue-eyed germans
06:26hitler needs to rewrite the history books and in 1919 at this five-star hotel he meets secretly with a
06:35group of prominent nationalists who can help him do just that
06:41at the thule society hitler finds like-minded people who promise to stop at nothing to make germany rise
06:49again the fuel society was a group which harked back to a mythical german past uh when the supposed nordic
07:00race had uh had been the effectively the the rulers of of the world at these secret meetings hitler and
07:10his followers give the legend of the arians a nazi makeover thanks to the unfounded claims of another
07:17occultist guide von liszt was a was a 19th century german um germanic fantasist he had a vision one night
07:25in which uh the running alphabet appeared to him uh and he used that as a basis for a lot
07:31of his work
07:32uh now these runes look like some of the ruins which have been found in in northern europe in
07:36sweden norway germany and so on but really they're just fantasy they're made up two of the most famous
07:42runes they use of an arian symbol is one of the swastika which you can see from norway and sweden
07:49all
07:50the way to india it's a very sort of ancient symbol and then of course the most famous of all
07:54or infamous
07:55i should say now is is the two ss's that is is used for them for the ss those two
08:01kind of little two
08:02dashes which become absolutely key to the image of the nazis now the sieg runes are based on uh guido
08:13von liszt's runes they're not in any way original germanic or of any historical significance uh but
08:21um but the ss were happy to go along with that born of the dreams of this germanic fantasist
08:29these runes will become some of the most familiar and feared symbols of the nazi regime
08:39likewise von liszt's ludicrous conviction that the ancient aryans were not persians but in fact
08:46germans would become the cornerstone of nazi doctrine
08:53during the 1920s the members of the thule society construct the mythical framework
08:58that will become the inspiration for the third reich they even identified the soundtrack to accompany
09:06this fantastical new mythical order top of the nazi hit parade is 19th century german composer richard
09:17wagner hitler was a huge fan of of wagner wagner himself was was a somewhat unpleasant man he was
09:25deeply anti-semitic and he probably went along with quite a lot of the ideas uh espoused by uh by
09:31these sort of racist groups in the 19th early 20th century so so it all kind of fitted together rather
09:37nicely wagner took uh old german myths and set them to music and and dramatized them and did so
09:44extremely successfully in his own lifetime because of the nature of the material that uh he was adapting
09:50clearly it was going to appeal to uh to people of that right wing sensibility
09:58hitler also had distinct views on what should be considered acceptable art in his vision of the new
10:04germany hitler had very strong ideas about art and you know he'd always seen himself as an artist and
10:11uh he had he had originally wanted to be an architect he liked pictures of naked women and
10:19sculptures of naked women and strong muscly men doing heroic things and so the house of art in munich was
10:27um was effectively a sort of showcase for uh good classical germanic art as opposed to evil degenerate
10:36jewish art which was things like impressionism and uh modernism and the avant-garde and anything
10:43that anything that hitler didn't like really hitler's adamant about what his people shouldn't like
10:50so sure is he that any kind of non-classical art should be shunned by society that perversely in 1937
10:58he commissions the degenerate art exhibition in munich which displays works of modernist art that
11:05hitler believes the german people should reject hitler certainly tried to alter the way people viewed
11:12art linked into ideas of germanic art and exhibitions of germanic art was also the program of strength free
11:19joy and the idea was that they would put on concerts um for free in in the center of town
11:27um they were put on art exhibitions and all this was about trying to change mass change people's minds
11:35into thinking in a certain particular way this is good art this is bad art this is the kind of
11:41music
11:41you should be listening to this is the kind of music you shouldn't be listening to at the thule society
11:46hitler and his followers rewrite the history books they create for the german people a noble past to
11:54aspire to built on fantasy and lies but hitler is no fool he knows the carefully constructed lie is paper

12:07science will provide a smokescreen to bolster his new history
12:16in this quiet wealthy suburb of berlin the nazis evict a jewish family and commandeer their house
12:22with evil in mind
12:26here under the command of ss leader heinrich himmler hitler establishes a research organization
12:33on ancestral heritage called the ananerba
12:38its aim is to prove scientifically what the thule society and its nazi disciples invented
12:45that germanic arian supermen ruled the ancient world the ananerba launches an extraordinary number
12:53of expeditions including um overseas you know on ships to the arctic and an arctic to look for atlantis
13:00there are expeditions to caves in france and elsewhere looking for the holy grail there are expeditions
13:08to tibet to look for the origins of the arian people to look for evidence of the spread of the
13:15arian people
13:20they don't find atlantis but against all the odds they get lucky at the maurn caves
13:26in this idyllic setting in the bavarian countryside a young and ambitious geologist makes a discovery
13:34that unlocks a prehistoric past the nazi cause has been longing for
13:41these are the caves where the mystery of assian bombers began
13:47born in 1912 by the time he's 25 assian bombers is a bright meticulous university geology major
13:56and a member of the ss with blonde hair and blue eyes he seems the model of german looks
14:04but he is in fact dutch
14:10in 1937 bombers is put in charge of excavations at this remote location
14:15under express orders by ss boss heinrich himmler
14:22overnight the site is completely sealed off and ss troops take over the digs
14:31what is uncovered here will help give the nazis the justification they need to conquer lands
14:38in prison innocent people and wipe out races in the quest for world domination
14:51in the summer of 1937 an archaeological find is uncovered deep in these caves in the bavarian countryside
15:01it's a discovery adolf hitler has been hoping for in his quest to strengthen the creation of the aryan myth
15:08a rewriting of history that claims the germans were the world's master race
15:15what ss archaeologist assine bombers first discovers may not look like much
15:21but these carved flints called leaf points date back as far as 50 000 years and reveal a massive leap
15:29forward
15:30in prehistoric weapon technology the leaf points uh we essentially uh don't know exactly uh what function
15:39they had me and most of other colleagues tend to think that these were quite well made knives
15:45and they had the advantage that you could resharpen them like you can do with kitchen knives today
15:53but alongside the rudimentary stone knives there is something much more technologically advanced
16:00what you see here is the small sophisticated fear point that is made from a flint and it has this
16:11back which is very steep and with this back it was glued to the spear and it's for sure a
16:18point uh that
16:20was a projectile and was a part of a hunting equipment what makes it so advanced is that the spear
16:28points are
16:28manufactured in bulk from a stone core then attached to a shaft to form a lethal throwing weapon it is
16:36made
16:36from a core like that for the first time such regular uh objects were produced in a series so that
16:47you can see here from the blade that almost all blades look more or less the same it's a serial
16:52production
16:52so it's another technological system the discovery is groundbreaking the big question the nazis need
17:00answered is who's responsible for this technological breakthrough boomers at that time for sure knew
17:08that these leaf points were made by neanderthals he for sure knew that the spear points the regular
17:16blades that they were made by modern humans boomers concludes that the more primitive tools were made by the
17:24more primitive humans neanderthal man considered at the time to be brutish and inferior the technologically
17:33superior weapons were made by cro-magnon man a sophisticated forerunner of modern humans
17:40now pinpointed in germany the physical difference between um modern humans that you can see here with
17:49the skull uh the skull uh and the under tiles which you can see here the physical difference are very
17:55obvious um so uh you
17:58can see the eyeball ridges which are very prominent and a very different shape of the skull so if you
18:05compare
18:06it to a modern human as we are as well you can see for example that the brain case is
18:12very long
18:13but the forehead is um let's say short uh compared to a to a modern human
18:27the inference that boomers drew from this was that the cro-magnons had actually evolved developed in
18:34germany boomers believed that um that this proved that they were a german people they were perhaps the
18:40forefathers of um of modern germans he also notices something more sinister in the archaeological timeline
18:48all evidence of neanderthal man abruptly disappears to be replaced by only cro-magnon artifacts
18:56on this evidence boomers makes a bold claim
19:02he concludes that the earliest evidence of a prehistoric master race is not only german
19:09but they prevailed by exterminating the inferior neanderthals on the soil of the fatherland
19:15before conquering the ancient world this is the prehistoric justification the nazis are looking for
19:23to kick-start their evil campaign of racial cleansing
19:31except assene bomer's idea is based on a massive false assumption there is simply no proof no smoking
19:42gun at the mauren caves that lead to his conclusion that germanic modern man wiped out the much maligned
19:49neanderthals in fact modern interpretations tell a very different story genetics
19:59in the last let's say five years tell us that um we have to rethink our concept of a species
20:06because
20:07all of these were intermixing interbreeding and we all carry and the estimations differ in between 1.5 to
20:17maybe four percent of neanderthal genetic information in us as let's say eurasians in africa it's not found so
20:26um all the differences that uh were for a long time thought to be also a main reason for the
20:35disappearance of neanderthals we have to rethink because we are much closer related to each other
20:40than we formerly thought there is no proof to indicate that neanderthals were wiped out on german soil
20:50instead modern theories suggest neanderthals lived in harmony and interbred with modern man
20:58but it's too late the lie is cast the germans have everything they need to seek world domination
21:07the theory is that because you're the master race you have a right above all others to be masters of
21:13certainly your own lands but ultimately the world as well
21:20this forged identity as the world's supreme race gives the nazis the historical justification
21:26to lay claim to territories they clearly have no right to
21:32the 1939 invasions of czechoslovakia and poland are based partly on the unshakable belief that the
21:39germans are the true and ancient rulers of the world casting aside inferior races in the process
21:46as the early germans had done to the inferior neanderthal man
21:54but they need to do more than just conquer new land
21:58they need to expand the aryan population to fill it shocking new evidence suggests a bizarre nazi
22:06breeding program was secretly underway
22:201942 europe and north africa are in the grip of nazi supremacists and now they are pushing into russia
22:28the germans seem unstoppable in their quest for world domination
22:35driving the nazi atrocities and expansion is the totally fabricated belief that they are descended
22:41from an ancient master race supermen that founded the world's greatest civilizations
22:51the myths of arian supremacy are absolutely crucial to the nazi ideology because they use
22:57this to justify the land grabs they they subsequently make the way they present it is that it's us or

23:05it's a kind of do or die scenario that if germany doesn't spread its wings the master race will die
23:11out
23:13the nazis start to think of the future of the third reich by taking territory and ridding it of
23:19undesirables they are creating land that now needs to be repopulated by a new generation of aryans
23:31and back home in the fatherland the racial ancestry think tank the annanerba comes up with a twisted new
23:39social experiment to try and satisfy this need this abandoned country house near berlin shows only the
23:47barest clues to its haunted past
23:53dagmar jung spent the first six months of her life here
23:58the last six months of her life here it was only decades later that she discovered the extraordinary reason why
24:06i was born here in 1942
24:12as a child growing up in my parents house there were several moments that didn't quite add up
24:19and then i got married and in the marriage documents certain details had been erased
24:31above the word father and mother they had written the words foster father and foster mother
24:38and my mother had tried to erase that it was then that i started to become suspicious
24:45and the first one
24:47only then does dagmar realize she was adopted and when she traces her father the mystery deepens further
24:57she was raised here as an infant because her father was in an elite ss unit
25:03he was one of hitler's personal bodyguards
25:06and she isn't alone
25:09born hundreds of miles away in an eerily similar country house in norway
25:15when gazella heidenreich is brought home things are not as they first seem
25:21i think i lived a quite normal life for about three years after the war with my aunt with my
25:30so-called
25:30mother and her two sons and my grandmother my papa had been in prison of war but one day it
25:38is was said that
25:40papa would come back and this was the first shock in my little life
25:46that this man walked in and of course the boys ran papa come back and of course i thought also
25:53papa came back
25:55but then he said what is the ss bastard doing here
26:01gazella discovers that her papa is actually her uncle
26:05gazella was born out of wedlock the result of an affair between her real mother and a high-ranking ss
26:12officer illegitimacy was viewed as shameful at the time but newly discovered documents confirmed that the
26:19real moral crime lay with the social engineering experiment she was part of
26:25growing up hundreds of miles apart gazella and dagmar have striking physical similarities
26:32blonde hair and steely blue eyes
26:35because both gazella and dagmar are products of the lebensborn arian selection program
26:42in the beginning it sounded rather reasonable because the real reason for for the founding of the
26:52lebensborn was that there were so many abortions in germany
26:58so it was him less idea that he said it's a pity to lose any precious blood by abortions and

27:08so he said him less idea to support those women and he would support children
27:16who would otherwise not get their place in society on the face of it the creation of lebensborn houses
27:28where unmarried mothers can have babies cared for without social stigma seems an unusually generous act
27:35by the ss-run annanerba
27:39except there's a catch
27:43all women who wanted to deliver in a lebensborn home they had to fit into into a special physical
27:51criteria like the ss had also they had to be at least one meter sixty and they should of course
28:00they
28:01should at the best be blonde and have blue eyes and they should be very healthy they should have they
28:10had to prove by a physician that they are healthy and they had to prove that there were no jews
28:16in
28:16in their in their family they had to bring a arian certificate otherwise they would not get in because
28:26this of course was the real purpose of lebensborn
28:32this exclusive social welfare program quickly gains notoriety
28:37although it is a secret operation it does not go unnoticed that the lebensborn houses are frequented
28:43by striking ss officers and young blonde blue-eyed women it isn't long before rumors start that the
28:52lebensborn houses are part of an active aryan breeding program to promote the mythical aryan race
28:59himmler has no issues with his soldiers having casual relationships with unmarried local women in
29:05occupied territories as long as those women are of nordic or germanic appearance
29:12it's no coincidence that norway is home to the first lebensborn facility there was an order of himmler
29:19that the yet as the war is starting so much of this precious precious german blood would could be lost
29:29so it would be all right if all his officers should could also get children not only with their wives
29:39but also with young women who are willing to give birth to children for fatherland and führer
29:50the lie formulated by hitler and his racist myth makers provides himmler with the excuse he needs
29:57to breed good german blood but the breeding program is only the start as himmler takes his quest for new
30:05aryan blood in a horrific new direction himmler actually had said we will take wherever we need aryan blood we
30:18will take them home
30:19if even if we have to steal it and this is a actually a quotation if you look at the
30:27lebensborn
30:27as a kind of positive part of a program to gain as much healthy german children as possible then there's
30:34of
30:34course the the negative part in which the ss took uh children from families in poland with some as they
30:43saw it um german background and took them to germany and um have them adopted by german families
30:52so a systematic actually robbery of children took place the children are taken from their families in
30:59order to boost the genetic purity of the fatherland but the irony is the nazi scientists are more likely
31:07achieving the opposite there's a great line from charles darwin which i find very useful indeed and he
31:15says somewhere that ignorance more frequently breeds confidence than does knowledge in other words if
31:22you don't know anything about genetics or anything else it's very easy to be confident in what you're
31:27doing and the germans the nazis uh were perfect examples of that those children from eastern europe
31:33let's say may have had blonde hair and blue eyes but most of their genes would have been eastern european
31:39genes um not genes of the kind which the germans thought were pure race now that's total confidence
31:45but it's based on total ignorance it's still unknown how many blonde blue-eyed children are taken by
31:53force from their birth parents in occupied territories and brought up as germans in liebensborn homes like
31:59this but estimates range from 20 000 to 200 000. many will never know they will be denied the closure
32:13the
32:14the
32:23himmler's obsession with aryan purity is wide-ranging
32:28To join the SS, officers and their future spouses have to pass ancestry tests,
32:35proving there has been no Jewish blood in their family since 1725.
32:45Key among the indicators used to prove racial purity and Aryan descent
32:49is the trademark blonde hair and blue eyes.
32:54But today's geneticists know that these Nazi tests are unrelated to any notion of racial purity.
33:03Blonde hair and possibly blue eyes, certainly red hair too,
33:06came about through natural selection, inherited differences in the ability to stay alive.
33:12Because when humans got out of Africa about 50,000 years ago, I guess,
33:16and began to spread into the terrible climates of Europe,
33:20we faced a real problem, and it was a big problem,
33:22which is that we didn't have enough vitamin D.
33:26Now, vitamin D you can make in your own body through sunlight getting into your body,
33:31but if you've got a black skin, you can't do that.
33:34So light skins were favored, and the evidence for that is very, very strong.
33:38So in other words, in Western Europe, in Scotland, Ireland, Scandinavia,
33:41people have this terrible vitamin-deficient diet,
33:45and any mutation, any change that lightened them even further
33:49would allow more sunlight to get in and make vitamin D.
33:53Now, that's true for blondes, and that's how these things got common.
33:57And that, of course, is an entirely different and much more convincing model of what went on,
34:02making up some mythical master race which magically appeared in Germany and nowhere else.
34:07That simply isn't true.
34:11Despite the ignorance, fantasy, and lies,
34:14Hitler and the Nazis will stop at nothing to preserve their fictional Aryan bloodline,
34:20whatever the terrible human cost.
34:31At concentration camps, like this one in Dachau, close to Munich,
34:36the birthplace of the Nazi party,
34:38the SS take their concept of racial purification to a terrible final conclusion.
34:48There were 200,000 prisoners in Dachau concentration camp
34:52and in satellite camps, and more than 41,500 prisoners died.
34:59Many of these prisoners being brought to the concentration camp
35:03did not fit into the ideals of a master race.
35:08The ancient myths central to Nazi doctrine
35:12depict the Jews as racially inferior to the Aryans.
35:16To Hitler and his racist following,
35:18the greatest threat to the pure Aryan bloodline
35:21is interbreeding with what he calls a mongrel race.
35:26I think one has to understand that the Nazis were about to create
35:30a dominance in Europe which was based on a racist hierarchy.
35:36And, of course, the German people and other Nordic nations,
35:43Dutch, Norwegians, and so on,
35:46would be seen as a very top of this hierarchy.
35:50And, of course, on the lowest end of the hierarchy,
35:53the Nazis saw their worst enemies, the Jews,
35:57which would, according to their view, disappear from the world.
36:00What they're saying is the only way we can survive
36:03is by perpetuating this bloodline, cleansing our bloodline,
36:07getting rid of those degenerates, that bacillus.
36:10This is what Hitler calls the Jews, a bacillus, you know, a plague.
36:15If you can get rid of those,
36:17then we can once again create that pure race,
36:20that race that was the most superior in the planet,
36:24and we can be superior again.
36:31Researchers now believe that the work of the Dutch archaeologist
36:35Assien Boehmer's sowed the seed for the Holocaust that would follow.
36:44Boehmer's uses in one of his publications
36:46the words vanichtum, extermination,
36:49related to the Koma-Yon people
36:51and their killing of the Neanderthal people.
36:54Well, extermination, vernichtum,
36:57is the word used by the National Socialists
37:00when they were killing the Jews,
37:02organizing the Holocaust.
37:04It's even used by Hitler himself in one of his public speeches.
37:07So the words used in the context of the Holocaust
37:10were also used by Boehmer's in the context of his excavation.
37:14The idea that it's possible to annihilate a population
37:18is giving an historical example in the past.
37:21And that, of course, is a contribution to genocide.
37:29The evil belief that they are merely repeating history
37:32validates the Nazis' final solution,
37:35the attempt to wipe out an entire race
37:38in the Aryan quest for racial purity.
37:42Prisoners were executed.
37:44Some of them were tortured until they were dying.
37:49Some of them were dying because of the diseases in the camp.
37:53They were starving in the concentration camp
37:56because there was not enough food.
37:58So there were a huge range of reasons
38:01why prisoners were dying in the concentration camp.
38:05The Nazis even introduced ghoulish eye and hair color charts like these
38:11to try to gauge citizens' racial origins,
38:14a test that for many would mean life or death.
38:19What's deeply sinister about this kind of object
38:22is it looks so simple and objective, so plain.
38:25And if I'm sending a soldier out to the field

43:52that the Germans
43:53were the master race,

44:53for entry into the SS.

44:56And yet he is
44:57the Reichsfuhrer SS.
44:58He is the German leader

45:01So you see there's a kind of sort of,
45:03there's a disparity
45:04between what they're perpetuating
45:06and what is the reality
45:09of their own physical appearance.

45:15home in on Berlin,

45:23and twisted brain
45:24behind the final solution,

45:27follows suit
45:28by swallowing a cyanide capsule

47:27refused to work
