00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're paying tribute to the baddies whose methods may be
00:12questionable, but their reasons are understandable and relatable. There will be spoilers ahead.
00:22Number 50. Caecilius, Doctor Strange
00:26Originally, Caecilius served as one of the masters of the mystic arts under the tutelage of the Ancient One.
00:33Master Caecilius, that ritual will bring you only sorrow.
00:39Over time, however, he grew fed up with what he saw as his teacher's hypocrisy when it came to dark
00:44magic.
00:45His breaking point reached when he lost his wife and child. Thus, he turned his back on his former
00:51master, pledged his allegiance to Dormammu, and vowed to merge Earth with the Dark Dimension to put an
00:57end to death itself. In hindsight, aligning himself with the cosmic conqueror was a foolish decision,
01:04but it's understandable given Caecilius' loss.
01:07I have a new teacher now. Dormammu deceives you. You have no idea what he truly is.
01:14His eternal life is not paradise, but torment.
01:18In the end, he does achieve immortality, but as a mindless being dwelling in the dark dimension
01:25for eternity. A fate worse than death.
01:28Number 49. Karl Anheuser, 2012. Obviously, we survived the prediction that the world would end
01:36in 2012, but the 2009 film gave us a glimpse of what might happen had the prediction come true.
01:42When do we let the country know? What do you mean?
01:45The people, sir. They need to know.
01:49Well, of course they do. Listen, your job is to figure out when this is all going to fall apart.
01:56My job is to figure out how to retain some type of government after it falls apart.
02:01Unfortunately, White House Chief of Staff Karl Anheuser makes survival a living nightmare.
02:06First, he tries to hide the upcoming disaster from the public. Then, when it's time to leave,
02:11he tries to prevent thousands from entering the arcs that could save them. As much as we hate to
02:17admit it, he's just thinking logically about the situation.
02:20Have you completely lost your mind? Look at the clock! We have barely 15 minutes left!
02:27Do you want to be responsible for the extinction of the human race?
02:29He tried to avoid causing a mass panic, and he knows that humanity can't survive without making
02:34some hard decisions. No matter how much said decisions hurt.
02:38Number 48. Russ Cargill, The Simpsons Movie.
02:42There's a bit of debate over who the true villain of the first Simpsons movie is.
02:47Technically, Russ Cargill, the head of the EPA, is the main antagonist of the movie.
02:52When you made me head of the EPA, you were applauded for appointing one of the most successful
02:57men in America to the least successful agency in government. And why did I take the job?
03:02Because I'm a rich man who wanted to give something back. Not the money, but something.
03:07He locked all of Springfield under a dome following an environmental disaster,
03:10and then planned to destroy the town and turn it into a second Grand Canyon.
03:14However, let's not forget that the environmental disaster was Homer's fault.
03:19He recklessly and selfishly turned Lake Springfield into a cesspool.
03:24Did Cargill go mad with power and manipulate the situation?
03:28Definitely, but it's not like they were unwarranted, given the mess Homer caused.
03:33Sir, I'm afraid you've gone mad with power.
03:36Of course I have. You ever tried going mad without power? It's boring. No one listens to you.
03:40Plus, he raises a very valid point. Going mad without power is boring.
03:47Number 47. Sentinel Prime.
03:50Transformers Dark of the Moon.
03:52No, we're not talking about Transformers 1 Sentinel. That arrogant faker deserved worse than he got.
03:58With Dark of the Moon, Sentinel Prime, however, it's complicated.
04:02I will overlook your condescending tone. If you heed the gravity of mine, the Decepticons must never know the space
04:11bridge is here.
04:12For in their hands, it would mean the end of your world.
04:17He was the leader of the Autobots and Optimus Prime's mentor, who presumably disappeared during the Great War.
04:23In reality, he had allied with the Decepticons in hopes of restoring Cybertron, planning to force humanity into a life
04:30of servitude.
04:31While Transformers 1's Sentinel went to extremes to only serve himself, this Sentinel did so for the benefit of his
04:39planet and people, wanting to see them thrive again, no matter the cost.
04:43For the sake of our planet's survival, a deal had to be made with Megatron.
04:51Unfortunately, his methods didn't sit well with his former student, Optimus.
04:56Number 46. Walter Peck.
04:59Ghostbusters.
05:00Whenever you take a risk with your new career, there's always got to be that one curmudgeon hellvent on knocking
05:06your dreams down.
05:07Can I help you?
05:08I'm Walter Peck.
05:10I represent the Environmental Protection Agency, the 3rd District.
05:14Great.
05:15How's it going down there?
05:15For the Ghostbusters, that curmudgeon is Walter Peck of the EPA.
05:20He antagonized the Ghostbusters for causing dozens of environmental violations and was hell-bent on shutting them down.
05:26Later, he inadvertently caused the ghosts that our team had captured to be re-released, plunging the city into chaos.
05:33Yes, the incoming apocalypse is mostly Peck's fault, but the Ghostbusters did bring most of the chaos to the city,
05:41even if they were containing it.
05:43I don't believe you're seriously considering listening to these men.
05:54Get him out of here.
05:56Bye.
05:57I'll fix you, Venkerman.
05:59Can we really blame him for trying to do his job?
06:02Number 45.
06:03The Grinch.
06:04Dr. Seuss.
06:06How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
06:08It's a tale as old as time.
06:10The Grinch is a furry green grump who tries to steal Christmas from the Hoos, only to learn the true
06:15meaning of the holidays in the end.
06:17The Ron Howard adaptation, however, gives us a look at the Grinch's point of view.
06:22Santa, what's Christmas really about?
06:24Vengeance!
06:34He was ostracized from childhood for being different from the Hoos and grew frustrated with their materialistic view of Christmas.
06:43It's honestly empowering to watch him rob from the Hoos, considering everything they did to him.
06:49Thankfully, Cindy Lou Who's kindness enables him to finally heal from his trauma and learn to enjoy the holidays after
06:55so many painful years.
06:57Merry Christmas, Mr. Grinch.
06:59Number 44.
07:00Count Dooku.
07:02The Star Wars franchise.
07:04The Force seems pretty straightforward, right?
07:06The Jedi are the good guys, while the Sith are not.
07:09It's a little more complicated for Count Dooku, as he was once a revered Jedi Master and mentor of the
07:15late Qui-Gon Jinn.
07:17It's a great pity that our paths have never crossed before, Obi-Wan.
07:22Qui-Gon always spoke very highly of you.
07:24However, over time, he became disheartened with the Jedi Council, believing it had lost its way.
07:30Qui-Gon's death was the final straw, and Dooku abandoned the Council in favor of the Sith, playing an instrumental
07:36part in the Clone Wars.
07:38It's hard to argue with Dooku's loss of faith.
07:41What was once a symbol of peace in the galaxy had become a puppet to a corrupt government.
07:47Good, Anakin, good.
07:51Kill him.
07:54Kill him now.
07:56Ironically, he himself would become a puppet for Emperor Palpatine.
08:00Number 43.
08:01Agent Whiskey.
08:03Kingsman, The Golden Circle.
08:05Already, Agent Whiskey has our sympathies for dying, not just once, but twice.
08:10Callahan, meet Agent Whiskey.
08:16Kid, looks like we're hooking up with a chick at a rock concert.
08:20My favorite kind of mission.
08:22He ends up getting shot in the head after being deemed a traitor, only to be revived by nanotech and
08:28later killed again after it's revealed he is a traitor.
08:31He betrayed the statesman to further his own goals of eliminating all people with substance use disorder for good.
08:37It's more than a little extreme, but understandable once we learn that his wife was killed by a person with
08:43substance use disorder.
08:44A world without those people in it.
08:48It sure smells like peace to me.
08:50Unfortunately, no matter how sympathetic his pain is, his fate was seemingly sealed when he was portrayed by Pedro Pascal,
08:58whose characters rarely make it out alive at the end of the day.
09:02Number 42.
09:04Enchantress Suicide Squad
09:06Poor June Moon was just an ordinary archaeologist, before becoming possessed by the malevolent spirit of the Enchantress.
09:14She inhabits Dr. Moon's body now.
09:17Where is this witch?
09:19In my pocket.
09:20Eventually, Amanda Waller gets hold of both of them and recruits Enchantress to be part of her Task Force X,
09:27threatening her with literally cutting out her heart if she didn't play nice.
09:31Obviously, our sympathy goes out to June, since she's unwillingly roped into all this just because she's hosting an evil
09:39spirit.
09:39But said spirit's wrath is justified, too.
09:42Imagine being an all-powerful ancient being, but now you've been reduced to a puppet for a corrupt mortal who
09:48ignores your warnings.
09:49My spell is complete.
09:52Once you and your armies are gone, my darkness will spread across this world, and it will be mine to
09:59rule.
10:00Suddenly, trying to take over the world feels like an underreaction.
10:04Number 41.
10:05The Wolf
10:06Puss in Boots, The Last Wish
10:08This sickle-wielding Lobo may be the most terrifying creature in all the land.
10:13Can I get your autograph?
10:15Been following you for a long time.
10:19Sign right there.
10:25Puss in Boots lapsed in the face of death.
10:28Bounty hunter.
10:30So I've heard.
10:31He is the living embodiment of death, and he's set his sights on Puss in Boots, determined to snuff out
10:37the last of his nine lives.
10:39This may sound harsh, but think about it from his point of view.
10:42Puss lived his life carelessly and basically mocked death itself.
10:46Now his number's up, and he's in dire need of a lesson in humility.
10:51Overall, the Wolf is a harsh but fair Reaper, just trying to do his job, but can accept defeat when
10:57necessary.
10:58And I've come for years, Puss in Boots.
11:00But I'm still alive.
11:04You know, I'm not a cat person.
11:06I find the very idea of nine lives absurd, and you didn't value any of them.
11:15In the end, he and Puss part on respectful terms, knowing this won't be the last time they meet.
11:22Number 40.
11:23Andrew Detmer, Chronicle
11:25In a unique take on the found-footage genre, three high schoolers suddenly find themselves with superhuman abilities.
11:31That is crazy.
11:33Oh my god.
11:34Oh my god.
11:35At first, it's all fun and games, but things take a dark turn for our leading man, Andrew Detmer.
11:41He's lived a long, hard life.
11:43Ruthlessly harassed by other kids, mistreated by his father, and watching his mother battle cancer.
11:49The film follows his slow descent to the dark side, filled with theft, betrayal, and mass murder.
11:55We shouldn't have to tell you it's wrong to harass people, because all it takes is enough bad days to
12:00drive a poor kid to his breaking point.
12:02I am not going to break your stupid rules, okay? So you just screw off and stay out of my
12:09life!
12:09And if he's gifted with telekinesis, lord help anyone in their path.
12:14Number 39.
12:16Shere Khan, The Jungle Book
12:18Of all the predators in the jungle, few are as feared as Shere Khan.
12:23How interesting.
12:24He's cunning, ferocious, and loves the thrill of the hunt.
12:27He acts suave and benevolent, but making him angry, or getting in his path, will be the biggest mistake of
12:34your life.
12:34However, there is one thing that Shere Khan is afraid of.
12:38Mankind.
12:39They invented firearms and can create fire, which can harm any predator in the wrong hands.
12:44Not even someone with Shere Khan's prowess stands a chance against such indestructible tools.
12:50Barilo! Help me!
12:52While his hunting of Mowgli seems cruel, and we don't know if Mowgli would grow up into a hunter,
12:57it's hard to blame Shere Khan for taking precautions for his own safety.
13:02Number 38.
13:03Mr. Glass, Unbreakable
13:05If you were a comic book geek, how much would it take for you to snap and go full villain
13:10mode?
13:11If there is someone like me in the world, and I am at one end of the spectrum, couldn't
13:16there be someone else opposite of me at the other end?
13:19For Elijah Price, it didn't take much.
13:22He was a charismatic genius cursed with brittle bone disease, which earned him the unfortunate
13:27nickname, Mr. Glass.
13:29He trained his friend David Dunn to control his superhuman abilities, only to reveal that
13:34he had orchestrated the tragedy that revealed David's powers in the first place.
13:38You know what the scariest thing is?
13:44To not know your place in this world.
13:47To not know why you're here.
13:52That's...
13:55It's just an awful feeling.
13:57With nothing but comic books to help cope with his affliction, Price made it his life's
14:01mission to find an actual superhero.
14:03After all, if he succeeded, who cares how fragile he is in the end?
14:08Number 37.
14:09Tai Lung, Kung Fu Panda
14:11Tai Lung was an ambitious, prideful snow leopard, and the adoptive son of Master Shifu.
14:17He was a master of kung fu and hoped to become the dragon warrior, only to have his wishes denied
14:23due to the darkness in his heart.
14:25He wanted the dragon scroll, but Oogway saw darkness in his heart, and refused.
14:31Outraged, Tai Lung laid waste to the valley.
14:34Said darkness came to light, when Shifu didn't offer his adoptive son the support he needed.
14:41Afterwards, Tai Lung started a never-ending vengeful quest, hell-bent on silencing everyone
14:46who had wronged him and taking the power he craved by force.
14:50Whether Tai Lung overreacted or not, Shifu could have at least tried to show his adoptive
14:56son that he still cared, instead of passively letting the darkness consume him more.
15:00Was he really too far gone to be saved?
15:03This battle is between you and me.
15:08So, that is how it's going to be.
15:10That is how it must be.
15:12Number 36.
15:13Damien Diamond Dame Anderson, Creed III
15:17In their younger years, Donnie and Dame were best friends, and Damien had ambitions of
15:22being one of the greatest boxers of all time.
15:24Don't trip.
15:25You'll be right there with me.
15:28Shit, someone gotta carry my bags.
15:30Bro, why you gotta play with me like that, bro?
15:32Unfortunately, Dame took the fall for a crime that Donnie committed and was put in jail
15:37for 18 years.
15:38To add insult to injury, Donnie had been living Dame's dream of being a pro boxer while he
15:43was incarcerated, and Dame is hell-bent on reclaiming the title Donnie allegedly stole
15:48from him.
15:48While we don't condone Dame's dirty tactics, it's hard to blame him after all of the bad
15:53hands he's been dealt.
15:55Hey, I'm just getting started, little brother.
15:58I'm coming for it all.
16:01What's that supposed to mean?
16:04Isn't he threatening me?
16:05Thankfully, he's a good sport about losing in the end, and he and Donnie can have a fresh
16:10start.
16:10Number 35.
16:12Xenomorph Queen, Aliens
16:14There's no doubt that the Xenomorphs are some of the most terrifying aliens in the galaxy.
16:19Just one of those things managed to wipe out my entire crew in less than 24 hours.
16:24And if the colonists have found that ship, then there's no telling how many of them
16:27have been exposed.
16:29Do you understand?
16:30They're humanoid, hostile, parasitic predators who lay eggs in their hosts, which violently
16:35burst out of their chests.
16:37Their queens are even more monstrous-looking, and they maintain command over the entire hive
16:42while spawning more soldiers and guards.
16:44But at the end of the day, a Xenomorph Queen is just looking after the welfare of her children
16:50and making sure their species doesn't die out.
16:53Turning humans into incubators may seem cruel, but at the end of the day, they're just doing
16:58what comes naturally to them.
17:00Get away from her, you bitch!
17:02Also, technically, we did intrude on their territory, so that's on us.
17:07Number 34.
17:08Lieutenant Tom Iceman Kozanski, Top Gun
17:11If you need a good wingman, you won't find anyone better than Lieutenant Tom Iceman Kozanski.
17:16You need any help?
17:19With what?
17:21You figured it out yet?
17:24What's that?
17:26Who's the best pilot?
17:28No, I think I can figure that one out on my own.
17:30When we first met him, Iceman is an arrogant pilot and Maverick's rival at the academy.
17:35They both competed to become the best in their class, but Maverick got too reckless out in
17:40the field, while Iceman kept a cool head in the game and understood all the risks.
17:45While Maverick's accomplishments are impressive, he wouldn't have made it as far without Iceman
17:50in his corner.
17:51You are still dangerous.
17:56You can be my wingman anytime.
17:58It wouldn't be until the end of his lifespan that he'd finally get the recognition he
18:03deserves.
18:04This hits even harder, considering his actor Val Kilmer passed away in 2025.
18:10Number 33.
18:11Miranda Priestly, The Devil Wears Prada
18:14If you're at odds with your boss, remember, it could always be worse.
18:18You could be under Miranda Priestly's employments.
18:21And you have no style or sense of fashion.
18:25Well, um, I think that depends on what you're…
18:30No, no.
18:31That wasn't a question.
18:32She is the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, and she truly is the devil incarnate.
18:38She's cold as ice and demands perfection from everyone under her thumb, and heaven help
18:42anyone who offers her less.
18:44However, she's in charge of a huge organization in a misogynistic time, so the world tries
18:50to knock her down for being a woman in the business.
18:53But Miranda won't have any of that.
18:55If being a cruel perfectionist is what it takes to survive, then she'll do so and thrive,
19:00and hopefully enable others to power through as well.
19:03I think so.
19:04Number 32.
19:05The Machines.
19:06The Matrix.
19:08Are you afraid of the rise of AI?
19:10You definitely will be once you watch The Matrix.
19:14All that we're asking in return is your cooperation in bringing a known terrorist to justice.
19:20In the future, the Earth has been dominated by machines, and humanity is kept alive and
19:26complacent in The Matrix, acting as batteries to feed their artificial overlords.
19:31It didn't have to be this way, though.
19:33The machines were originally made to benefit humankind, and once they gained sentience,
19:37they hoped to coexist with the humans.
19:40Tragically, humanity's fear and hubris burned any bridges between their kind, and
19:45the machines did what they could to survive.
19:47Hopefully, there's still time to learn the follies of mistreating technology.
19:52Where we go from there is a choice I leave to you.
19:55Number 31.
19:56Kingpin.
19:57Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse.
20:00Like the Green Goblin, Doc Ock, and Venom, the Kingpin has always been one of Spider-Man's
20:05biggest villains.
20:06In this case, literally.
20:08You like my new toy?
20:10Cost me a fortune, but hey, you can't take it with you, right?
20:15You came all this way.
20:16Watch the test.
20:18It's a hell of a freaking light show.
20:19You're gonna love this.
20:23No, no, don't do this!
20:26In the first Spider-Verse film, he's bigger than ever, and even more of a danger, as his
20:31latest scheme threatens the stability of the multiverse itself.
20:35Additionally, he does the unthinkable.
20:37He kills his universe's Peter Parker.
20:40And what is his master plan?
20:41To find a universe where he can reunite with his family.
20:45They died before the film, and he's desperate to reunite with his loved ones, no matter the
20:49cost.
20:50Is this what you want, man?
20:51What are you doing?
20:52Stay away from me.
20:54Melissa.
20:55Richard.
20:56What are we doing here?
20:57I don't know, Richard.
20:58Melissa, it's me.
20:59You know me.
21:00We're leaving now.
21:02Don't go.
21:03While that doesn't excuse his misdeeds, it's understandable that he's doing all this over
21:09a broken heart.
21:10Number 30.
21:11Clyde Shelton.
21:12Law-abiding citizen.
21:14The lines between right and wrong really blur when looking at a man like Clyde Shelton.
21:20The villain of law-abiding citizen spends the movie viciously murdering many corrupt individuals.
21:26In other words, you can't move, but you feel everything.
21:32But those motives are only because he seeks revenge for his family after their killer received
21:37a short prison sentence.
21:38It's pretty understandable why he'd be so ticked off at everyone.
21:42While the amount of violent crimes he commits is obviously concerning, he's not wrong
21:47in wanting to clean up the rotten judicial system.
21:50You see, this is what I'm talking about.
21:51You were about to let me go.
21:53Are you kidding me?
21:55This is why we're here in the first place.
21:57At the end of the day, Clyde's a broken man who lost his family.
22:01We won't excuse his actions, but it's clear that the pain he suffered is something no one
22:06should ever have to deal with.
22:086am, Nick.
22:09Or what?
22:13Or I kill everyone.
22:15Number 29.
22:17Jonas Miller, Twister.
22:19Jonas Miller, he's a nightcrawler.
22:22We all started out in the same lab that Jonas went out and got himself some corporate sponsors.
22:26For a movie all about devastating tornadoes, isn't it funny that the so-called villain is
22:31someone who's trying to stop them?
22:33Yes, Jonas Miller is kind of a jerk, and yes, he's mainly in storm chasing for the money.
22:39But does that really matter?
22:41Dorothy, you took her, you damn thief.
22:45Oh, I get it.
22:47You want to take credit for my design.
22:49He refined the Dorothy technology by making the Dot 3, creating a better version of Bill
22:54Harding's tornado warning system in the process.
22:57We'll admit that stealing Bill's idea isn't cool.
23:00But they both wanted to find ways to combat these tornadoes and would undeniably save lives
23:05in the process.
23:07It's the exact same goal our heroes have.
23:09If you ask us, the real villain is the Twister itself.
23:13Maybe we should get off of this road.
23:16I think you may be right.
23:17Number 28.
23:19Walter Simmons, Godzilla vs. Kong.
23:22Godzilla has never attacked us and provoked before.
23:25These are dangerous times.
23:27Say what you want about evil tech CEOs, but Walter Simmons had the right idea when it
23:32came to creating Mechagodzilla.
23:35Robot Godzilla.
23:36No, that's Mechagodzilla.
23:40Obviously, he didn't intend for the gigantic robot kaiju to go haywire, but it proved to be
23:46an effective weapon against Godzilla.
23:48And that's kind of important for the MonsterVerse because not all of its titans are well-intentioned.
23:54Even the heroic ones like Godzilla and Kong caused tons of collateral damage.
23:59It might seem cynical, but humans need to be able to defend themselves against monsters
24:04if necessary.
24:05The Apex Titan of my own hand.
24:11It's time to show the world what you can do.
24:13Walter's ambition might have cost him his life, but hopefully other humans follow in
24:18his footsteps and create a Mechagodzilla 2.0.
24:21Number 27.
24:23Count Dracula.
24:24Bram Stoker's Dracula.
24:26The luckiest man who walks on this earth is the one who finds true love.
24:33He may be the baddest vampire of them all, but with Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula, he's
24:39mostly just a heartbroken man trying to get over his grief.
24:43His wife, Elisabetta, tragically took her own life after believing he died.
24:48And that act sent her to hell.
24:56Elisabetta.
24:57Filled with hatred, Vlad the Impaler turned his back on Faith and became the Dracula we
25:02all know.
25:13He suffered a great loss, and the worst part was that his wife's death was completely avoidable.
25:19It's not too surprising that he went down such a dark path.
25:24Number 26.
25:26Vulture.
25:26Spider- Homecoming.
25:28The world's changing.
25:34It's time we change, too.
25:36There's no doubt that this is a great Spider-Man film, but it's weird how Homecoming tries to
25:41convince us that blue-collar workers are evil.
25:45Okay, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but Adrian Toomes was totally right to be ticked
25:51off.
25:52I bought trucks for this job.
25:54I brought in a whole new crew.
25:56These guys have a family.
25:57I have a family.
25:58He was the one hired to clean up the wreckage of New York, after all.
26:02But then Stark's business waltzed right in and stole his job.
26:05It's no wonder he had to turn to a life of crime as the Vulture after this.
26:09He just wanted to provide for his family, and while Tony Stark probably didn't mean
26:14for it to happen, he took that opportunity away.
26:17You're out there wearing that goofy thing, lighting up cars, calling yourself the Shocker.
26:22I'm the Shocker.
26:23I shock people.
26:24What is this, pro wrestling?
26:25Number 25, D16 Megatron, Transformers 1.
26:30Follow me as we march on Iacon, and I take down Sentinel once and for all!
26:37Though he wasn't necessarily the main villain, D16's journey would eventually lead him to
26:42becoming the villainous Megatron.
26:44His heel turn has got to be one of the most justified there is.
26:48Sentinel Prime, a leader he looked up to, was actually rotten to his core.
26:53Not only that, Sentinel killed Megatron as Prime, D16's idol.
26:57Sentinel?
26:59Why?
27:00For all the power of Cybertron.
27:02If you ask us, he was right to take Sentinel down.
27:06While his methods were violent, he gave the people of Cybertron a chance to fight back against
27:11their oppression.
27:12From a societal misfit to the face of a revolution, D16 took charge of his own destiny by becoming
27:18Megatron, leader of the Decepticons.
27:24Number 24, The Riddler, The Batman
27:28This classic comic villain may be shrouded in mystery, but his goals aren't.
27:34Thomas Wayne tried to force this crusading reporter into a hush money agreement to save
27:38his mayoral campaign!
27:40Right from the jump, it's pretty clear that The Riddler is targeting Gotham's corrupt underbelly
27:45and for good reason.
27:46Considering how the Gotham Renewal Fund, a program that a young Edward was supposed to benefit
27:51from, was taken and exploited, it makes sense that he'd want to fight back.
27:56Do you know what being an orphan is?
27:59It's 30 kids to a room.
28:01His quest for vengeance causes him to kill as many corrupt politicians and police officers
28:06as he can find.
28:07Flooding nearly all of Gotham in the process was a bit excessive, we'll admit, but Riddler
28:12exposed the rottenness of Gotham and made those responsible for it pay.
28:16What do you want from me?
28:18What?
28:20Oh, if only you knew how long I've been waiting for this day.
28:24Number 23, The Wicked Witch of the West, The Wizard of Oz
28:28If an entire house dropped onto your sister, wouldn't you be just a little upset?
28:34Not only that, what if the killer also stole your sister's magic shoes while everyone practically
28:39cheered her on?
28:40The ruby slippers!
28:41What have you done with them?
28:42Give them back to me or I'll...
28:44It's too late!
28:45There they are, and there they'll stay.
28:47No wonder the Witch of the West was so mad at Dorothy.
28:51She might have wanted to rule Oz, but she also wanted to get revenge for her sister,
28:56as she should.
28:57Just try.
28:58I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too.
29:02We're not the only ones who think she's at least partly in the right.
29:06Numerous Wizard of Oz projects have further fleshed out her backstory and made her a sympathetic
29:11character.
29:12I want him to know that he was the one who made me this way.
29:19In the eyes of many, she's hardly even a villain anymore, so maybe this wicked witch isn't
29:24so wicked after all.
29:25Number 22.
29:27Raul Silva.
29:29Skyfall.
29:30See what she's done to you.
29:33Well, she never tied me to a chair.
29:36Her loss.
29:37Abandonment can cause some serious issues.
29:40Just look at Silva, for example.
29:42The hacker was sold out by MI6.
29:44Are you surprised?
29:46Not particularly.
29:48But then you always wear a slippery one.
29:50Maybe that's why you liked me so much.
29:52Granted, he went a little bit rogue when he hacked into the Chinese government, but the
29:57agency completely turned its back on him afterward.
29:59It's like the concept of loyalty means nothing these days.
30:02Regret is unprofessional.
30:04They kept me for five months in a room with no air.
30:08They tortured me.
30:09This betrayal led to his imprisonment and eventual facial scarring.
30:14MI6 left him for dead, and that resentment caused him to become a powerful cybercriminal.
30:19Silva's not motivated by wanting to take over the world or anything as grand as that.
30:24He just wants pure revenge.
30:25In his eyes, MI6 deserves what's coming to it.
30:29Free both of us.
30:31Free both of us.
30:34We're the same bullet.
30:36Number 21.
30:37Syndrome.
30:38The Incredibles.
30:39Hey, hey, aren't you curious about how I get around so fast?
30:42See, I have these rocket boots.
30:43Go home, buddy.
30:44What?
30:45Now.
30:45They say never meet your heroes, and Syndrome found out why.
30:49He just wanted to help out his favorite superhero, Mr. Incredible, and become his sidekick.
30:54But he was quickly rejected, and that caused him to turn from superhero to supervillain.
30:59All I wanted was to help you.
31:01I only wanted to help, and what did you say to me?
31:05Fly home, buddy.
31:06I work alone.
31:07Just like Incredibles 2 villain Screenslaver, Syndrome essentially wants to give heroes a reality
31:13check.
31:13However, he also wants to look like a hero.
31:16See?
31:17Now you respect me.
31:18Because I'm a threat.
31:20That's the way it works.
31:21He plans to give citizens the chance to gain powers themselves through his tech.
31:26Is it really that nefarious?
31:28Yeah, he'd be diluting what it means to be a hero, but some of his incredibly advanced
31:33technology would undeniably change the world.
31:37It's cool, huh?
31:39Zero point energy.
31:41I saved the best inventions for myself.
31:43Number 20.
31:45Cypher, The Matrix.
31:47Wanting to return to blissful ignorance in The Matrix, Cypher betrays the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar.
31:52I don't want to remember nothing.
31:55Nothing.
31:56You understand?
32:01I don't want to be rich.
32:03We're definitely not defending those actions.
32:06He turns on his friends and smiles while doing it.
32:09But we do understand where he's coming from.
32:11That is not true, Cypher.
32:13He set us free.
32:14Free.
32:15You call this free?
32:19All I do is what he tells me to do.
32:21Morpheus doesn't really paint a clear picture of what you're getting into by taking the red pill.
32:26He romanticizes it, making it seem cool and badass that you're going down the rabbit hole.
32:31He doesn't mention the part where he's actually recruiting you to join a war that
32:36you otherwise could have remained blissfully unaware of.
32:39Cypher deserved a real choice in the matter.
32:41I'm tired, Trinity.
32:44I'm tired of this war.
32:47I'm tired of fighting.
32:48I'm tired of this ship being cold.
32:51Number 19.
32:53Sandman.
32:53Spider-Man 3.
32:55For all of its shortcomings, one thing that the third installment in Sam Raimi's trilogy does
33:00well is tell the heartbreaking story of Flint Marco.
33:03You maybe even killed a man?
33:05It wasn't like that.
33:08It wasn't.
33:08Who could have better predicted that we would be feeling for the guy that killed Uncle Ben?
33:14But that's just what happens.
33:16Flint is more of a victim of circumstance than a straight-up villain.
33:20Yes, he is a criminal, but he turned to a life of crime to try to take care of his
33:24sick daughter.
33:25I know all about you.
33:27Like the fact that Spider-Man won't let you help your poor daughter.
33:32Who among us can't sympathize with that?
33:34If the story was told from his point of view, we might even regard him as a hero, fighting for
33:39his family in an unjust world.
33:41My daughter was dying.
33:44I needed money.
33:51I was scared.
33:53Even Peter eventually forgives him.
33:56Number 18.
33:57Zemo.
33:58Captain America Civil War.
34:00While there was already a rift forming between the Avengers over the Sokovia Accords,
34:06Zemo tore it right open by framing Bucky for murdering King T'Chaka.
34:10I don't want to talk about it.
34:13You feel that if you open your mouth, the horrors might never stop.
34:17A major narrative thread throughout the MCU involves the Avengers dealing with the consequences of their actions.
34:23And Zemo plays an important role.
34:26Yes, the Avengers saved everyone they could in Sokovia when they took on Ultron.
34:30But who created Ultron in the first place?
34:33Oh yeah, Tony Stark.
34:35The battle destroyed Zemo's home and left his family dead.
34:38It's not difficult to understand why he holds a bit of a grudge.
34:43My father lived outside the city.
34:46I thought we would be safe there.
34:49My son was excited.
34:51He could see the Iron Man from the car window.
34:54Number 17.
34:55Pre-Crime Department.
34:57Minority Report.
34:58This may be an unpopular opinion.
35:01Obviously, the pre-crime department proved to be flawed when it was revealed that the precogs' visions aren't as authoritative
35:08as they seemed.
35:09You think the three in the tank come out of a test tube?
35:12They are merely the ones who survived.
35:14The inhumane way in which the precogs were treated was also a horrible abuse of power.
35:19But there were some good intentions behind the idea.
35:22Imagine you're about to be attacked on the street.
35:25And just in the nick of time, a team of agents descends on the scene and saves your life.
35:31Ideally, such a department wouldn't just prevent crimes before they happen, but also deter crime.
35:36Who would decide to plan a murder or robbery when they could be arrested before it even happened?
35:41Think about the lives that little girl saved.
35:43Think about all the lives she will save.
35:45That little girl could have saved Sean.
35:49Number 16.
35:50Victor Drago.
35:51Creed II.
35:53For fans of the original Rocky movies, this is the match of a lifetime.
35:58The son of Apollo Creed fighting the son of the man that killed his dad.
36:02But while Victor Drago's father Ivan deserves every bit of shade thrown his way, Victor deserves better.
36:07What are you doing here?
36:10A storm will be.
36:11I don't even know this woman.
36:13She's a foreign woman.
36:15Victor.
36:15She's left for you.
36:17And not all of them.
36:18When you look at things from his perspective, all the anger and darkness he has built up inside of him
36:23is understandable.
36:24His father came home, disgraced, to a country that pretty much disowned him.
36:29Because of you, I lose everything.
36:34Country.
36:36Respect.
36:36Victor's mother abandoned him.
36:39And his father?
36:40Let's just say tough love was his preferred method of parenting.
36:44No wonder Victor was so driven not just to defeat Creed, but to destroy him.
36:48Number 15.
36:50Joe Boo Tupaki.
36:51Everything, everywhere, all at once.
36:54Joe Boo Tupaki is a terrifying figure who wants to destroy the entire multiverse.
37:09However, deep down, she's also the daughter of a woman who pushed her too hard, splintering her mind and leading
37:16to a hopeless, nihilistic worldview.
37:18After her mother, Alpha Evelyn, discovered verse jumping, she experimented using her own child.
37:24Joe Boo jumps through universes searching for meaning, but a foot in all worlds is a foot in none.
37:30She creates the black hole-like everything bagel, not with the primary aim of ending the multiverse, but of ending
37:36her own suffering.
37:38If I wanted to see if I went in, could I finally escape?
37:44Like, actually die.
37:46Knowing her story, it's easy to sympathize with her.
37:49Who doesn't want to find a place where we belong?
37:52So let's just go our separate ways, okay?
37:56Just let me go.
37:58Number 14.
37:59The Tethered.
38:01Us.
38:01If you were experimented on by the government, then abandoned in an underground facility, you'd probably be pretty angry, too.
38:09Now, of course, we aren't condoning all the brutal killing and whatnot, but we definitely understand the Tethered's motives.
38:15There was a girl, and the girl had a shadow.
38:24They just want to live their own lives and enjoy the world like we do.
38:27Can you imagine spending your whole life linked to another, unable to fully control your own actions?
38:33In order to escape this fate, the Tethered revolt against their unwitting captors.
38:38It's not their fault that the only way to become untethered is to kill their counterparts.
38:43They figured out how to make a copy of the body, but not the soul.
38:48The soul remains one, shared by two.
38:51Number 13.
38:53Barbossa.
38:54Pirates of the Caribbean.
38:55The Curse of the Black Pearl.
38:57We are cursed men, Miss Turner.
39:01Compelled by greed we were.
39:03But now, we are consumed by it.
39:07It's not easy to sympathize with the murderous kidnapping captain of a ship that he stole from his former friend,
39:13leaving him for dead on a deserted island.
39:15But we do get Barbossa.
39:18We took them all.
39:20We spent them and traded them.
39:22And threatened them away.
39:24Drinking food.
39:25A pleasurable company.
39:26After years of never feeling anything and not being able to die, anyone would go a little bit mad.
39:33His speech to Elizabeth Swann might be terrifying, but it is also insightful.
39:37Now, of course, all of the plundering and the murdering still seems like a bit of overkill.
39:42Yet we do understand.
39:44Barbossa just wants to be a real boy again.
39:47I feel nothing.
39:49Not the wind on my face.
39:51Nor the spray of the sea.
39:53Nor the warmth of a woman's flesh.
39:57You best start believing in ghost stories, Miss Turner.
40:02You're in one.
40:03Number 12.
40:04Khan.
40:05Star Trek Into Darkness.
40:11Khan is easily one of the most formidable villains the crew of the Enterprise has ever faced.
40:17He's basically superhuman.
40:19And nothing motivates someone, whether they're a villain or a hero, more than friends in peril.
40:25Kirk and Spock probably understand that better than anyone.
40:28They go to extreme lengths to save each other, as well as the rest of the crew.
40:32That's really all Khan is doing, too.
40:34His people had been pretty much held captive, or more like held hostage by Starfleet.
40:40Khan's means might be brutal, but he's doing what he thinks is necessary to free his people.
40:45Marcus took my crew from me.
40:48You are a murderer.
40:50He used my friends to control me.
40:53Number 11.
40:54Wilford.
40:56Snowpiercer.
40:57Okay, yes.
40:58Wilford is a tyrannical leader who keeps himself in power by controlling the population and teaching
41:04children that he's practically a god.
41:06We need to maintain a proper balance of anxiety and fear, chaos and horror in order to keep life going.
41:13Not good.
41:14But the dude did kind of save all of humanity.
41:17At least, what was left of it.
41:19When the new Ice Age occurred, he was the only person with the means to survive.
41:24He opened up his train to other people.
41:26Granted, he segregated the haves from the have-nots and ruled with an iron fist.
41:31Look, Curtis.
41:34Beyond the gate.
41:37Section after section, precisely where they've always been and where they'll always be.
41:43And the way he keeps the train running is absolutely heinous.
41:47But without him, everyone would be dead.
41:50That's gotta count for something, right?
41:52I've devoted my entire life to this.
41:56The Eternal Engine.
42:01Avengers Infinity War
42:03A common theme in many movies is that humans are a threat to themselves, and the Earth in general.
42:09Titan was like most planets.
42:12Too many mouths, not enough to go around.
42:15Along comes a villain who believes that humans should be controlled, or even culled.
42:20The Mad Titan operates on this premise except on a much larger scale.
42:24In Thanos' mind, he's the hero.
42:27A savior who will rescue advanced species from themselves.
42:31The snap is a quick fix.
42:33With all six stones, I could simply snap my fingers.
42:37They would all cease to exist, and I call that...
42:41Mercy.
42:41Of course, fortunately, not all of us want to commit mass murder to resolve the issue.
42:47The end here doesn't justify the means.
42:49He did get one thing right, though.
42:51We do seem to be destroying our own environment, and something's gotta give.
42:56Just not, you know, half of all life.
42:59And then what?
43:01I finally rest.
43:04And watch the sun rise on a grateful universe.
43:079.
43:08Old Joe
43:09Looper
43:10So, trying to slay a young person is impossible to defend.
43:15However, let's look for a moment at Old Joe's motivation.
43:18Have you heard of the Rainmaker?
43:22Yeah, Seth said.
43:24That night.
43:27You boss in the future, he used the words holy terror.
43:29Yeah.
43:31A reign of terror.
43:32It harks back to that old question.
43:34If you could go back in time and kill someone responsible for countless deaths
43:38before they committed any wrongs, would you?
43:41Old Joe is trying to stop the Rainmaker, who will become a criminal boss,
43:45kill all the Loopers, and murder Joe's wife.
43:48Even if you don't agree with his actions, it's easy to understand his reasons.
43:53Ending the Rainmaker's life before he becomes the Rainmaker will save a lot of lives.
43:58He's here.
43:59He lives here, now, in this county.
44:03And I'm gonna use this to find him.
44:06And I'm gonna kill him.
44:078.
44:08Lab Employees
44:10The Cabin in the Woods
44:11Though the college students are attacked by all sorts of monsters,
44:16the true villains here are the lab employees pulling all the strings from their underground facilities.
44:21Hey, you just sweat the chem, Len.
44:23Well, these morons are singing What a Friend We Have in Shinto.
44:26We are bringing the pain.
44:28And it certainly seems cruel to lure people into their sacrificial ritual,
44:32especially given their callous attitude towards it all.
44:35Congratulations, go to maintenance!
44:39To share the pot with Ronald the intern.
44:43That's not fair, I had zombies too.
44:45However, when you think about what's at stake,
44:48you can kind of understand where they're coming from.
44:51Without the ritual, the world will literally end.
44:53You can die with them.
44:57Or you can die for them.
44:59The lab employees, along with other organizations around the world,
45:02are tasked with keeping ancient gods at bay.
45:05In fact, it could be argued that these gods are actually the true villains,
45:09more than the lab employees.
45:187.
45:19Magua
45:20The Last of the Mohicans
45:22Sometimes things are all about perspective.
45:33From Magua's perspective,
45:35he is at war with the British and Colonel Monroe specifically.
45:39And when you think about how Magua was kidnapped by the Mohawks,
45:42tortured by Monroe,
45:44and basically had his life ruined,
45:45it's no surprise why the guy is so upset.
45:48It's not great that he pretends to be friends with our main characters
45:52only to ultimately betray them.
45:54And that part about him making one of Monroe's daughters his wife
45:57is also pretty grim.
45:59But there are causes for all that hate inside.
46:02Our council has asked the question.
46:04Our council has asked the question.
46:06To three and five.
46:10Courtois
46:11the hero.
46:136.
46:15Ozymandias
46:15Watchmen
46:16Nothing brings people together like a common enemy.
46:19Humanity's savage nature will inevitably lead to global annihilation.
46:24And nobody knows that better than Ozymandias.
46:27That's his whole plan.
46:28In the Watchmen universe,
46:30the Cold War has reached the point where nuclear war is imminent
46:33and mutually assured destruction is just around the corner.
46:37Ozymandias believes that the only way to stop us from fighting each other
46:41is by giving us someone else to fight together.
46:43He puts in motion a devastating attack on several cities,
46:47blaming it on Dr. Manhattan.
46:49And it actually works.
46:51The US and USSR do forge an alliance.
46:54It's another messed up case where the end clearly doesn't justify the means.
46:59But we do understand Ozymandias' motives.
47:12It's hard to believe that Hummel is considered the villain of this story at all.
47:26All he wants is for the families of his fallen comrades to be fairly compensated for their deaths.
47:32The US government sent them to war with the promise that their families would be taken care of,
47:36and then broke that promise.
47:38It was my men on the ground that made those hits possible by lazing the targets.
47:4320 of them were left to rot outside Baghdad after the conflict ended.
47:46No benefits were paid to their families.
47:48Hummel tries to do things the right way again and again,
47:51but eventually takes things into his own hands.
47:54Yes, he holds many innocent people hostage and threatens worse,
47:58but he doesn't actually intend on following through.
48:00He just wants the government to make good on its promises.
48:104. Roy Batty
48:12Blade Runner
48:13Similar to Khan, this is another villain that is really just trying to fight for his people.
48:26Replicants are created to be worked as slaves and programmed with a built-in four-year lifespan.
48:32Batty's main goal isn't to hurt anyone, although he's willing to.
48:36It's to prolong his life and fight for replicant rights.
48:39Imagine being used up for four years only to be discarded like trash.
48:43You were made as well as we could make you, but not to last.
48:48The Tyrell Company designed them to be as human as possible.
48:52Why are they surprised when they suddenly want to fight for their fundamental rights?
48:56All those moments will be lost in time.
49:033. Killmonger
49:05Black Panther
49:06While Killmonger might seem power-hungry at first glance, his motivations are truly honorable.
49:12He is of Wakandan descent, but abandoned by his own people.
49:16And then he grew up in a world that viewed him as a second-class citizen.
49:20We understand why Wakanda wants to keep their technology secret.
49:24Historically, humans abuse power.
49:26These items aren't for sale.
49:28How do you think your ancestors got these?
49:31You think they paid a fair price?
49:32Or did they take it like they took everything else?
49:35But sitting back and watching people hurt when you have the power to help,
49:38well, that doesn't really fly either.
49:41Y'all sitting up here comfortable.
49:44Must feel good.
49:46It's about two billion people all over the world that looks like us.
49:49But their lives are a lot harder.
49:52Yes, Killmonger does horrible things to get what he wants,
49:55but it's easy to see where he's coming from.
49:57When black folks started revolutions,
49:59they never had the firepower
50:01or the resources to fight their oppressors.
50:04Where was Wakanda?
50:052.
50:06Koba
50:07The Planet of the Apes franchise
50:09This is another villain who goes to extreme lengths to achieve his goal.
50:18But you can see why.
50:20Caesar's goal of peace between apes and humans is admirable,
50:23but Koba hasn't had the same experiences.
50:26Whereas Caesar became the adoptive son of a sympathetic human, Will Rodman,
50:31Koba was abused, tormented, and experimented on.
50:34Once Koba was given the intelligence to understand what had happened to him
50:38and to escape,
50:39his response was to fight back in self-defense and in defense of all apes.
50:44Why would he trust humans after all that?
50:46Caesar has no place here.

51:091. Magneto
51:10The X-Men Franchise
51:12There are thousands of men on those ships,
51:14good, honest, innocent men
51:16that are just following orders.
51:19Given his past and internment during World War II,
51:22Eric Lensher doesn't exactly have fond memories of being put on lists or seen as dangerous.
51:27Magneto wants mutants to fight back against oppression
51:30and to have the same basic rights and freedoms.
51:41Granted, his methods cross a line.
51:43Using your powers to control and hurt people
51:46isn't a great way to prove that you're not scary.
51:48But why should he have to diminish himself to make others more comfortable?
51:52If you watch the movies in chronological order,
51:55you can see how his motives change over the years into a kind of mutant elitism.
51:59But at his core, he is just a guy fighting for his people.
52:04I will bring you home, old friend.
52:07And I ask only one thing in return.
52:12Don't get in my way.
