Iran launched a wave of retaliatory missile strikes across the Middle East on Saturday following joint military attacks by the United States and Israel, sharply escalating tensions in the region.
Iranian missiles hit several locations in Gulf Arab states that host US military assets, including an area near the headquarters of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Manama, Bahrain. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising from the vicinity of the base, but the extent of the damage has yet to be confirmed.
Authorities in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan reported explosions and activated air defense systems to intercept incoming missiles and rockets.
