00:00Once upon a time, there lived a very wealthy man whose son was incredibly lazy.
00:08He had no interest in school, and the thought of working made him yawn.
00:14He would spend his days lounging around, doing absolutely nothing.
00:20His father often tried to reason with him, saying gently,
00:25Son, you have to learn a skill, or do some kind of work.
00:30That's how the world works.
00:33You can't just drift through life.
00:36But the words went in one ear, and out the other.
00:42The boy simply didn't care.
00:45One day, the father's patience ran out.
00:49He called his son, and said with a firm, serious tone,
00:56Listen to me.
00:57If you don't go out and earn something by tomorrow, you won't get any food in this house.
01:05The boy, shocked and scared, ran straight to his mother, crying his eyes out.
01:12He told her what his father had said.
01:17Like any loving mother, she couldn't stand to see her child so upset.
01:23She quietly opened her purse, pulled out a dollar, and gave it to him.
01:29Here, take this, she whispered.
01:32The boy's tears dried up instantly.
01:35He happily took the dollar and ran to show his father.
01:40His father looked at the dollar, then at his son, and said,
01:47Good, now go and throw it into the well outside, without a second thought.
01:55The boy, shrugged, went outside, and tossed the dollar into the well.
02:01He didn't hesitate at all.
02:04The father watched him, a thoughtful look on his face.
02:08He knew he had to try something different.
02:12The next morning, he sent his wife to visit her parents in another town for a few days.
02:19Once she was gone, he turned to his son again.
02:23This time, his voice was even more serious.
02:27If you don't earn something by tomorrow, he declared,
02:32I will throw you out of this house for good.
02:35The boy started to cry again, just like before.
02:39But this time, there was no one to comfort him.
02:43His mother was gone.
02:46He spent the whole day in his room,
02:49sobbing into his pillow,
02:51feeling completely lost and alone.
02:54As evening approached,
02:57hunger and fear finally pushed him out of his bed.
03:03He knew he had to do something.
03:06He wandered outside and saw the nearby train station,
03:11bustling with people.
03:13An idea sparked in his mind.
03:16As a train pulled in,
03:17passengers started getting off with their heavy bags.
03:20He approached them, one by one, asking politely,
03:25Excuse me, sir, may I carry your luggage for you?
03:30Most people just shook their heads and walked past.
03:34But he kept asking.
03:36Finally, one man stopped and looked at the tired, desperate boy.
03:42All right, the man said.
03:45I'll give you a dollar, if you carry my luggage,
03:49all the way to the main marketplace.
03:52The boy's heart leaped.
03:54He eagerly grabbed the heavy suitcase and a large bedding roll.
03:59The weight was immense.
04:02It strained his neck, his shoulders screamed,
04:05and his arms felt like they were about to fall off.
04:09But he had no choice.
04:12He gritted his teeth and started walking,
04:15one slow, painful step at a time.
04:19Sweat poured down his face,
04:21and his whole body ached.
04:24But he kept going.
04:25He was determined.
04:27After what felt like an eternity,
04:30he reached the marketplace,
04:32dropped the luggage,
04:33and collected his hard-earned dollar.
04:36Exhausted but proud,
04:38he made his way back home
04:40and handed the dollar to his father.
04:43His father took the dollar,
04:46looked at it,
04:46and then said the same thing as before.
04:50Go and throw it into the well outside.
04:54But this time,
04:55the boy didn't move.
04:57He clutched the dollar tightly in his hand
05:00and cried out,
05:02Father, no.
05:03My neck is killing me.
05:06My arms are still aching
05:08so badly
05:10from carrying
05:11that heavy load.
05:13I worked
05:14so hard for this.
05:15How can you ask me
05:17to just throw it away?
05:19A warm smile
05:20spread across
05:22the father's face.
05:23He walked over,
05:25pulled his son
05:26into a hug,
05:27and said,
05:29Now?
05:30Now,
05:31you understand.
05:33Now,
05:34you understand.
05:35Now you know
05:36how difficult it is
05:38to earn money.
05:39And you feel the value
05:41of your own hard work.
05:43From that day forward,
05:45everything changed.
05:46The father
05:47continued
05:48to share his wisdom
05:49about responsibility
05:51and the dignity
05:52of labor.
05:53The boy
05:54listened,
05:56truly listened,
05:57for the first time.
05:58he started
05:59helping his father
06:00at the family shop,
06:02learning the business,
06:04and discovered
06:05a sense of pride
06:06and purpose
06:08he had never known before.
06:10He finally understood
06:12that the greatest
06:13rewards in life
06:14are the ones
06:15you earn yourself.
