00:02oh I've leaked it hang on ball I want it to feel like your heart is racing
00:06certainly on the last few shots because that's how you're going to best develop your skills
00:16all right guys Rick Shields here top 50 coach for golf monthly and today I'm going to show
00:21you a 30-minute power boost range session to get you ready for this season to have the best
00:28golfing season you've ever had so let's hit the clock 30 minutes we're going to break this up
00:33into three different elements the first 10 minutes is all going to be about getting your basics correct
00:39things like alignment ball position and technique I'll somewhat say the boring stuff let's go through
00:46that first even though it's boring it's incredibly important first thing I want you to do is get a
00:52couple of long golf clubs out your bag something like the three of them four iron and we're going
00:57to use one of the golf clubs for an alignment aid and another golf club for a ball position aid
01:04you'll even still see right now some of the best players in the world when they practice they will
01:10have ball position aids out and alignments like it's so unbelievably important what we to do with this
01:18alignment one on the ground I want you to pick a target so I'm going to go for that blue
01:23flag that's
01:23just to the right of the 100 marker I'm going to put this club just running parallel to the left
01:29of
01:29that line I'm then going to make sure this club is at perfect right angles to the club on the
01:36ground
01:36because we're going to use I'm just going to use something quite lofted to start things off like a
01:41pitching wedge we're going to use the club that's on the ground here to use as a reference point for
01:48our alignment you can see there my right foot and my left foot are perfectly spaced between that club
01:54and then this club on the ground we're using mainly for ball position so for a pitching wedge I've got
02:00that absolutely smack bang in the middle of my stance if anything it's just a reminder it's almost
02:07setting that kind of default setting back to make sure that you're not getting out of place with
02:12where you aim or where your ball position is going to be so what I would do from here then
02:17is hit a few
02:19shots to warm up and also just to get your eye in so I've got my alignment I've got my
02:23ball position
02:27and I can work on a few nice easy shots
02:33and it's not not always like me I just hit that exactly over that blue flag that I was aiming
02:38for
02:38so that gives me a lot of confidence that my alignment is absolutely spot on and each time
02:44when you address the ball almost step out of that mold and come back in again don't get lazy
02:49so I'm going to hit about 10 shots doing this making sure this drill is absolutely nailed on to start
02:56things off
03:18okay so I'm really happy with that I feel like I've got my eye in from my ball position and
03:24my alignment
03:25the next thing to work on is your technique again I'll be honest with you the slightly
03:31boring stuff but we want to get out of a practice session we want to improve even if it's by
03:35one percent even less than one percent as long as every time we go to the range we improve by
03:41that
03:41little amount now the best way is in person lessons go and see a coach work on techniques that
03:47you need to work on or there's a few youtube channels out there obviously golf month Liz or my own
03:53where you can pick up on some golf tips and what I'd also recommend to get hold of
03:58is something like this this is a basically try a monopod with a little stand on the end
04:04and you can attach your phone to this handle I'm going to set my phone up and just take a
04:08few videos
04:08of my swing so I can have a look at my technique in slow motion top tips have the camera
04:13placed at
04:14waist height and have the angle of the phone in between where your feet are going to sit
04:19and where the ball is going to sit the reason why we have that positioning is because if the angle
04:24of the phone is too far to the right or too far behind you the actual path of your club
04:30coming down
04:30will look totally different almost the aspect ratio just will look totally wrong so making sure that
04:36phone position is at waist height and in between your feet and the ball pretty much in line with
04:41your hands is the perfect location and this is where I'm going to get a little bit more technical
04:46so for myself I'm working on keeping that clubface more closed going back so this is my main focus
04:52right now I'm almost forgetting result for a minute and focusing solely on this point in my golf swing
04:59exaggerating that feeling
05:03I'm not too worried about where the shot's going to go this is the the technique element of your practice
05:13session
05:15exaggerating that move
05:23and then looking at your phone and getting that feedback so what I like about this now I'm getting
05:27that instant feedback I can see the feeling that I'm getting from that swing is matching up with the
05:34actual reality of my clubface being more closed or more square which is exactly what I'm working on
05:40you know I love about this as well I'll often send this to a friend or I'll post it online
05:44or even send it to
05:45the golf coach I've been working with just to get that kind of feedback or sometimes I don't know if
05:50it's a
05:51real true practice session if you've not actually shared it on social media makes you just feel a little
05:55bit better about yourself that everyone's not practicing and you are you're getting better this is
06:00invaluable feedback we've all got these in our pockets now use it it definitely helps
06:08okay so that is the housekeeping stuff done they're the things that will definitely help you start your
06:13practice session off well I mentioned earlier a little boring stuff but very very important stuff
06:20right next up it's time to test yourself I've got a few really simple games here that you can do
06:26this
06:26with so the phone goes away the monopod goes away these clubs get put back in the bag because now
06:32it's time if you'd start getting in the zone of doing some testing yourself games I've got three
06:38really good ones the first one is a distance challenge game so start off with one of your irons now
06:44what I want you to do is think about when you practice you want to improve on your weaknesses
06:48you don't want to just practice all the time your strengths because there's no massive value in that
06:53you're already good at that practice your weaker shot so for example my weaker shots I'm not
06:58particularly very good from 100 yards and in so that's what I'm going to practice here and dead
07:03simply I'm going to grab my sand wedge you're quite a lofty golf club and I'm going to set myself
07:07a task
07:08I want to hit 10 shots in a row and each shot I want to gradually be further than the
07:15last shot
07:16if I fail in that task and I hit a shot that's too short I've got to start again now
07:22there's two
07:23ways of doing this you can do this visually at driving range or a practice ground down here at
07:28the driving range we've got the technology here of top tracer so I'm going to reset all that and
07:33I'm going to work on the carry distances each time being a little bit further than the last
07:39let's see if we can get 10 in a row that accomplishes that feat so the first shot I'm going
07:45to hit about
07:4625 yards is the goal
07:52and 25 yards is the shot I hit so I'm really happy with that start so the next shot I
07:58want to hit past
07:5925 yards but I don't hit it too long something in the 30s low 30s would be an incredible start
08:06to
08:06this challenge should be good 31 okay so really strong start I'm going to go kind of 40 yards for
08:19the next one oh a bit heavy
08:28oh I got away with it 33 yards we've done three in a row so far let's see if we
08:35can get 10
08:45that's strong
09:01oh right we failed we managed to get one two three four five six seven eight oh we almost got
09:10up to
09:10nine and then we failed but that's good because it means now I've got something to work on the big
09:17thing is as well is track your result get your phone have a little notepad in your golf bag
09:21and say this time I managed to do eight out of ten because next time you've got something to work
09:27on
09:28right next challenge is all about controlling trajectory starting off low and aiming to try and hit it higher
09:34so again similar to last time you can either use your visual perspective of how high these shots are going
09:40to go or using technology like top tracer
09:43I'm going to now move up to my seven iron and the minimum yards I've got to hit this is
09:47100 yards so I can't just chip it 50 yards in front of me
09:51what I'm going to start off by doing is hitting it super super low as low as I can possibly
09:55hit a seven iron
09:56and then each time just trying to change the trajectory a little bit until we finish actually trying to hit
10:02it super super high
10:03again a bit like the last challenge if we can do 10 in a row it's an amazing achievement so
10:09let's see how we get on
10:10it's got to go minimum 100 yards I'm going to start really low so there's a couple of things
10:14you can do here from a technique standpoint as well to hit a seven iron lower ball position further back
10:20in
10:20the stance hands further forward and one thing that creates height is speed speed and loft increase height
10:28so we're going to decrease the loft and hit it softer slower and let's start off nice and low
10:34then try and hit a little low 100 yard seven iron
10:42that's a really really low flight
10:46gone a bit longer than 100 yards 125 yards and it went 48 feet in the air
10:51the next shot we're going to go slightly higher but again it's got to go over 100 yards
10:56so this time I'm going to hit the ball a tiny bit faster than the last shot just to get
11:01that height
11:08that's a nice strike there we go we've elevated the shot by 10 feet so now we're going to go
11:14a little
11:14bit higher similar ball position a tiny bit faster so the first three I've done very good so far and
11:25we
11:25just tweak this a little bit change the trajectory I'm going to put the ball position slightly more
11:29towards the middle of my stance because that's going to bring the loft back to its more natural
11:34setting but I'm still going to hit this super soft
11:43might be higher though yeah 52
11:49okay middle of the stance I'm going to go a little bit faster this time
11:56so I've done six so far and successfully got to this stage I'm now going to move the ball position
12:01a little bit further up in my stance again to increase the loft
12:06this is going to be interesting I'm going to hit this over 90 feet
12:10it's starting to get quite high now
12:16that should be good
12:20this is good in practice because I've got to shot number seven now
12:23I'm starting to feel the pressure I want to get to number 10
12:26and it's good to practice under pressure
12:28keep the ball position forward and we go a little bit more speed
12:31we've got to try and get over a hundred and four feet in the air
12:37easy
12:39okay two more to go
12:41118 to beat
12:43ball position forward
12:45almost maximum speed
12:52okay last shot in the 10
12:54ball position forward
12:57maximum speed as hard as
12:59as fast as I can hit it
13:00and our last little sprinkle of magic
13:02finish with really really high hands
13:06because it keeps a loft on the face
13:08I've got to beat 132 feet
13:11I'm going to send this to the moon
13:18and that is 10 successful shots each going higher than the last
13:24last challenge to test yourself
13:26the driver
13:28it's going to be so simple this
13:3010 shots
13:30and you're going to picture a fairway
13:32how many times can you hit the fairway
13:34and again
13:35great ways of doing this
13:36out in the golf driving range here
13:38you can pick a couple of flags
13:39there's two flags
13:40a yellow one on the right
13:41a yellow on the left
13:42and I can picture that as my fairway
13:44or using top tracer
13:46I've come here on the long drive
13:48driving range fairway effectively
13:51I'm going to hit 10 shots
13:52and see how many times consecutively
13:54I can hit the fairway
13:55how many out of 10 shall I say
13:57I can get
13:57and again this is great
13:59you can note it down on your phone
14:00or in a little notebook
14:02and each time try and improve
14:03on your previous score
14:04right let's go
14:06what I want to try and get out of this
14:08as a practice session
14:09and for everybody watching
14:10is I want it to feel like nervous
14:13I want it to feel like your heart is racing
14:15certainly on the last few shots
14:16because that's how you're going to best develop your skills
14:19and how taking your game from the driving range
14:22to out on the golf course
14:24let's go 10 shots
14:25I'm somewhat even nervous on the first shot
14:27feels like a first tee
14:29first tee nerves type of vibe
14:30because you want to start strong
14:32I'm picking my line
14:34I'm really visualising where I'm going to hit this
14:36and let's start off straight down the middle of the fairway
14:45that should be a very good start
14:50one out of one
14:58might be a tiny bit right
15:00should be good
15:03just
15:04but we're on the fairway
15:05I'm not trying to hit these as hard as I can
15:06these are all fairway finding drives
15:22that was a little bit high and definitely got affected by the wind
15:26but I'm not looking for distance
15:27I'm looking for accuracy
15:28that's four out of four so far
15:40right this is the point where it starts to feel a bit more nervous
15:43I've just hit six really good drives there
15:46straight down the fairway
15:47we've got four more to go to get 10 out of 10
15:50the old heart is pumping
15:52this is what we want
15:53we want that excitement
15:54we want that kind of nerves
15:56can I finish strong
15:58this is coming down the straight
15:59I've got a good round of golf going
16:01can I keep hitting fairways
16:08it's not my best
16:09but it's straight down the middle
16:11straight down the middle
16:13three to go
16:19oh I've leaked it
16:20we might have missed the first fairway
16:23hang on ball
16:25hang on
16:27oh god look here
16:28that wasn't my best shot
16:29the old nerves started twitching
16:32but this is good
16:32this is what you want in a practice session
16:34two more to go
16:42okay this is it
16:45last shot
16:46again they've not all been pretty
16:48they've not all been perfect
16:50but this is the one
16:51I'm on for a record score
16:5410 out of 10
16:54can I finish
16:56this is walking down the 18th hole
16:57you've got a good round of golf going
16:59you just want to finish strong
17:00you want to hit that great tee shot
17:03well this hard work on the driving range
17:05will help you next time you get in that situation
17:09heart is pumping
17:10hands are twitching
17:11can I finish with a 10 out of 10
17:19hang on to that right hand side
17:21oh it's absolutely perfect
17:23perfect
17:24that is good
17:25that's good practice
17:26I feel motivated with that
17:27and next time I get on the golf course
17:29I can't imagine hitting it anywhere else
17:31apart from straight down the middle of the fairway
17:33right next up
17:36let's challenge someone else
17:40right the last section of your practice
17:43here at the driving range
17:44is to challenge somebody else
17:47whether that's a friend
17:48or whether it's actually just someone else
17:49at the driving range
17:50ask them if they fancy a bit of a competition
17:51this is a way that you can put everything you've just worked on
17:54for the first two sections of this practice session
17:57into a more realistic setting
17:59so you can do things like
18:01nearest the pin challenges
18:02who can hit it closest
18:03whether it's at a target at the driving range
18:05or again using top tracer technology
18:07or whether it's a longest drive challenge against each other
18:11and you could even finally pretend you're playing a hole again
18:15either on the range by using different targets
18:18or why not jump on one of the most famous holes in the world
18:22using top tracer
18:23and you know what why not make it a bit spicy as well
18:26the loser has to do a forfeit
18:28whether that's clean the other one's golf shoes
18:31or even simply carry the other golfers clubs back to the car
18:35make it mean something
18:37because then you're going to at least try your best
18:39and it matters
18:41like you want that bit of nerves
18:43you want that bit of excitement
18:44to definitely put you in the right frame of mind
18:47that is how you power boost your practice session
18:50ready for a great season
18:52get out there work hard in your golf game
18:54because believe me when you're playing well
18:57you'll enjoy it a lot more
18:59we'll see you next time
19:33and you'll see you next time
19:33you
