Drills that will help lower your scores.

00:07so if you're one of those golfers that really struggles with releasing the club actually how
00:12how you strike the ball when you're doing these kind of short chip shots I've got a great little
00:17drill to just to give you the understanding of how the club passes the body now what we see we
00:22see two types of poor release patterns when when we're talking about these kind of short shots the
00:27first one is we've been told at some point that we don't want to use too much wrist so what
00:32we tend
00:33to do is get very wooden very kind of stiff with our whole upper body and our arms and we
00:39actually
00:40try and then hold the club off this is what we call a block release the opposite can happen when
00:45we get
00:45too kind of wristy and actually we get this kind of what we call this open sort of early kind
00:52of
00:52release pattern here where we actually return the club at the wrong kind of the wrong way so the
00:58drill looks like this what I want you to do is take your left hand off and just place it
01:02onto your
01:02lead thigh and I just want you to grip the club as you would normally with your with your trail
01:07arm
01:07and I want you to feel like it's really nice and soft and you're just going to practice making some
01:12swings where the club comes up going to let it just naturally drop let gravity do its thing and actually
01:18just get used to brushing the ground you can see the club is now releasing past my body it's exposing
01:24the bounce if I do it on the ball just as a practice it's here let it drop and let
01:30it naturally
01:30kind of release if I then take another normal shot put my hands back on a nice way to just
01:36transition
01:37from this is then just with your lead arm just try and do exactly the same thing but let's just
01:42grip
01:42this nice and lightly to start with just do a couple of practice swings let the club drop
01:47let it pass go past your body and then let's just try and do one onto the ball
01:55that's a great way to give you the understanding of how to the club releases past your body stops
02:00you thinning it stops you hitting all those terrible shots and start enjoying some good chips so this is
02:05a game that we call darts and very simply what I want you to do is to take six balls
02:09and I want you
02:10to throw them around the green at very random positions don't change their lie literally throw them
02:16and hit from where they finish and now the real pressure comes from this is you're only allowed
02:21to do this one time you're only allowed to do this once a day or however many times you come
02:26down and
02:26practice you can't have another go at it I want it to resemble you on a on a golf course
02:31with a score
02:32trying to get the best score that you could possibly do so all I've got set up here is a
02:37little circle
02:38just as a bit of a visual it's kind of a four foot circle I'm kind of imagining and all
02:42I want to try and
02:43do is how many balls can I get a random positions around the green close to that hole so if
02:48I have
02:49a little go let's see if I can just get one oh I mean that wasn't bad as a shot
02:59but I'm going to
03:00now take these balls I'm going to throw them at different locations around the green and I'm going
03:04to see what score I can get how many I can get in that circle so if you're one of
03:09those golfers that
03:10really struggles to make a good strike one of the things that could be happening is you're
03:14decelerating the club throughout the downswing now one of the things that I see a lot of sort of high
03:19handicappers do they take the club so far back for such a short shot the brain is very good at
03:26kind of
03:26making its own kind of calibration and it kind of just goes well if I make a normal swing and
03:31I flush it
03:32I'm just going to nut it over the back so what will that what they do is they then naturally
03:36start to
03:36slow down unfortunately what then happens is the club is then decelerating to the point of
03:42when it strikes what really good chippers do is the complete opposite the club is actually
03:47accelerating past the ball so the fastest point of the swing is just past the golf ball so one of
03:54the
03:54really nice drills that I like to practice I've just got six balls here at the green and all I'm
03:58going
03:58to try and do is take a nicer kind of shorter backswing back I'm going to feel like I'm accelerating
04:04through and do a slightly longer finish so it's not going to be too far back nice and short longer
04:10finish through the whole idea with this is the club is accelerating towards the target now one of the
04:17problems that some people do when they try this for the first time is actually they go really too short
04:22and they sort of stab at it I still want you to keep your nice tempo your nice rhythm let
04:28that club fall
04:28but always make sure you're accelerating through to the target so this is a nice little drill just
04:34to give you a good kind of understanding of how you can select and choose different clubs based on
04:40the shot that you're just about to face so what I've got here is I've just got two kind of
04:44markers two
04:45kind of cones one really short and then one really closer to the hole and the idea being is just
04:51with
04:51four balls I want you to throw the first one and really get this kind of like childlike kind of
04:55instinct of actually what have you got to do to get the ball to start to land close to that
05:01first
05:01orange marker and then roll the rest of the way so what I'm going to do is try it first
05:05of all
05:05as just a nice little throw close to there and let it roll out so now what I want to
05:11see is can I
05:13get the club to do that same kind of height and get that same kind of release so I'm going
05:18to practice
05:18going through some different clubs and actually let's see if I can mimic and copy that exact same flight
05:25so it was nice and low it's going to land hopefully close there and release out
05:33all right I've just hit that slightly bit too hard but I'm going to try the next one so with
05:37the next
05:38one I just want to see is can I get the same thing to go higher and stop faster so
05:42again if I was to do
05:44this shot I'm going to throw it nice and high get it so it's going to hopefully stop ready to
05:49be close
05:51so I'm pretty good at throwing it's the shot that's the problem I then get a nice lobway so I'm
05:55going
05:55to try and get a nice high one and I'm going to try and do the same thing get the
05:59club to mimic and
06:01copy what I've just did get nicely underneath it and let it release up to the to the flag try
06:10this with
06:10loads of different shots different distances and just get used to throwing one first you can really
06:15feel what you need to do and then take different different clubs try different clubs and give this
06:21to go I promise you it will really help with your game
