00:02New Home Office figures show that the number of people claiming asylum in the UK fell by 4% in
00:07the year to December, despite a rise in arrivals by small boats. Around 100,000 asylum claims were
00:15recorded, with more than 40% of them linked to crossings in vessels. The number arriving by
00:20other irregular routes dropped by around 20%. The backlog of claims awaiting a decision is the
00:26lowest since 2020. More asylum seekers are now being housed in long-term accommodation rather
00:33than in hotels. The statistics also show that enforced returns have increased with
00:38Albanian nationals, the most common group removed last year.
