00:01When I was growing up, I only thought of race in terms of black and white.
00:07It wasn't until much later, when I learned about anti-Semitism,
00:12that I realized blacks and Jews face common enemies.
00:16But when we stand together, we are a formidable force.
00:21The relationship between African Americans and Jews in the United States,
00:25it's not a simple story, and it cannot be a simple story.
00:28It's got a really long history.
00:32When these two communities get together and they synergize creatively or politically,
00:37they're a juggernaut, and they can't be stopped.
00:40Jewish people have always been some of the first outside of the culture itself
00:45to embrace black music.
00:49A white Jewish producer and the greatest black jazz singer of all time.

01:06There was a very visible black Jewish alliance during the Civil Rights Movement.
01:11That relationship accomplished incredible things.
01:16But I don't want to romanticize the alliance because it wasn't an untroubled relationship.
01:22We want black power!
01:24There is a profound sense of the Jews are the haves, the blacks are the have-nots.
01:30Nothing has separated the Jewish and the black community more than this issue of affirmative action.
01:36It's dangerous to make it all the same.
01:39We're not the same.
01:40We come from different histories.
01:41I don't consider myself white.
01:43And when I once told our class that, they laughed in my face.
01:46You laughed in my face.
01:48I did.
01:48Blacks and Jews in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn clashed,
01:52inflamed by the death of a young boy.
01:54The old alliance between blacks and Jews, is that in jeopardy now?
01:58Very much so.
01:58We must not allow the relationship between Jews and African Americans to suffer.
02:04The whole purpose of this meal is to let you know, we are Jews too.
02:08In Charlottesville, violent protests broke out at what was supposed to be a white nationalist rally.
02:13When you see Charlottesville, you see that most people that are anti-Semites are also racist.
02:22When everything blew up on campus, I wasn't sure about how I would navigate the conversation.
02:27We have to find a way to listen to all the rancor, even when it makes us uncomfortable.
02:33It's dangerous, because it's a really hard time to talk about either black people or Jewish people.
02:39It's just become fraught in so many ways.
02:42But anything that's dangerous is worthwhile.
03:10Can you address your main problems with the discovers himself to express yourself?
