00:00when City took on United in the 127th Manchester derby in November 2002.
00:06City were promoted from the First Division the previous season
00:09and were aiming to address a dreadful record in recent derbies.
00:13Their last win had been a 5-1 triumph way back in 1989.
00:17United needed to win to keep in touch with the early premiership pace-setters.
00:21They were already eight points behind the leaders, Liverpool.
00:25City were able to welcome back former United legend Peter Schmeichel,
00:28who'd recovered from the injuries that had made him miss the previous three games.
00:32For City manager Kevin Keegan, it was a first taste of derby football Manchester-style.
00:38Keegan was forced into a defensive reshuffle
00:40after first-choice centre-backs Distant and Howie were both injured in the midweek Cup defeat to Wigan.
00:45So Gerard Wieckens and Lucien Matomo both came in for their first starts of the season.
00:52It was United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy's first experience of a Manchester derby as well.
00:57His manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, boasted an impressive record against their local rivals.
01:03Twelve wins, six draws and just one defeat.
01:07He did have selection problems, though, as both Roy Keane and Nicky Butt were ruled out with injuries
01:13and David Beckham was suspended.
01:15That meant a role on the right side of midfield for Argentine international Juan Sebastian Veron.
01:22The usual imposing atmosphere inside the stadium.
01:25Your match commentator is Ian Dark.
01:31And an early touch for the Republic of Ireland international Richard Dunn.
01:38City have been beaten by United in United's last four visits here.
01:46But it is a weakened side that they're playing.
01:51United here.
01:53Keane's only played five games in fact this season.
01:59Here is Sanji Hai.
02:02Anelka.
02:11Jihai wins it back.
02:13Dunn making the most of his chances back in the side now.
02:25Giggs.
02:27Nicely done.
02:28Van Niestelrooy.
02:29Veron joins in here.
02:30Thought about the shot.
02:31Might get another crack at it.
02:33Good covering by Teato.
02:41Philippe Neville who made his league debut for Manchester United in a 3-0 win here.
02:53Sylvester.
02:55Giggs lets it run and Vekens gets it away.
03:00Difficult for Manchester City at the back with Vekens and Matomo in from the start for the first time.
03:05Anelka caught up Rio Ferdinand.
03:07Now Gota.
03:08Great chance to put Manchester City ahead.
03:10Anelka surely.
03:11Yes.
03:16Nicholas Anelka does it again against Manchester United.
03:27Bedlam at Main Road.
03:33Rio Ferdinand got caught out here playing in his first ever derby.
03:39Anelka too much pace for him.
03:41Feeds Gota.
03:44And although Bartos makes a save, he only sets it up for Anelka, his seventh of the season.
03:50And he's now got three in his last three Barclay-Card English Premier League matches.
04:05Bill Neville's pass hits Paul Durkin.
04:08Very uncertain in the centre of the midfield at the moment, Manchester United.
04:12And there was a kind of resigned shrug of the shoulders from Veyron out of picture there as that move
04:17broke down again.
04:21United disjointed early on.
04:27This is the goal again.
04:29Gota didn't get much on it.
04:31But Bartos could only help it into the path of Anelka.
04:36Scholes.
04:37Good challenge.
04:38They're on.
04:39Now Van Niestelrooy.
04:41Crowded out.
04:42But Giggs plays it in there again.
04:44And Saussure has equalised.
04:52Ole got a Saussure.
04:54Beats his old mate, Peter Schmeichel.
04:59Who says he feels like a Manchester lad these days.
05:03Gets his first ever derby goal.
05:07But Matomo was rather caught out.
05:09Saussure got in behind him.
05:13And he doesn't miss from there.
05:18Two goals in the first ten minutes.
05:22City's defending.
05:23Not good though.
05:31Sylvester.
05:32Sylvester, lovely accurate ball.
05:33Van Niestelrooy brought it down and well muscled out of it by Beacons.
05:421-1.
05:441-1.
05:44Here in the Barclay card English Premier League.
05:47One of the big games of the season.
05:51Manchester City, by the way, have changed divisions in six of the last seven years.
05:57An incredible run of promotion and relegation just about every season.
06:02The odd one out was 97.
06:04VerĂ³n's bad ball there, letting City have a little opening and Nalca.
06:08And VerĂ³n trying to rescue the situation only gives away a free kick.
06:12It was his mistake that started the trouble.
06:18Almost looked like twins there for a moment, didn't they?
06:20Close up.
06:22Nalca and VerĂ³n.
06:28He might have the same hairdresser.
06:36Bercovich from over 30 yards out.
06:41Gota!
06:43Jumped well.
06:44Dangerous in the air, the big Bermudan.
06:50Gota, who needs two more to make it 100 goals for Manchester City.
07:01Carlos Quiroz there on the right.
07:03The Portuguese coach, new this season, of Manchester United.
07:10First time he'll have experienced the derby atmosphere.
07:26We've got this nonsense now in the Tomo, waiting to come back on the pitch.
07:30Waiting to get the appropriate signal.
07:33Here he goes.
07:35Looks like United just might be thinking of some minor tactical adjustment there,
07:42judging by the intense conversation between manager and coach.
07:58Derkovich to Foway.
08:03He's done.
08:08Foway.
08:09And again, the passing living, something to be desired.
08:14Although Gota's got the ball here.
08:16Gota's running back and he scores!
08:17That's amazing.
08:19Huge mistake by Gary Neville.
08:22Oh, a real howler.
08:27And City are back in front.
08:32That was a nightmare for Gary Neville, who must be wondering why he didn't just knock this to safety.
08:40It was a very poor ball, to be honest, from Foway.
08:43There seemed no danger at all, but Gary Neville allowed Gota to rob him.
08:48And Sean Gota scores against Manchester United, the club where he started his career in England.
08:57Foway!
09:01Foway!
09:02Sundry High is in some space on the right-hand side.
09:07And this hook dropped nicely for City, for Berkovic.
09:10Now Jensen.
09:16Well, he thought Berkovic was making a little run in the channel, but to be honest, it was a little
09:21bit of a tentative ball from Jensen in the end.
09:29And Nelka won it in the air, otherwise he might have got a free-kick anyway.
09:39Sundry High.
09:47Oh, and Nelka!
09:52And Gota, both of them in there, and I think it was Gota who got the touch.
09:59It was indeed.
10:02Lovely touch that by Solskjaer to Van Nistelrooy, who still has it, has he?
10:06No, Vikin does some heroic work to make sure that Van Nistelrooy couldn't get in behind.
10:12But what a sublime touch it was from Solskjaer.
10:19Picture-booked stuff, that from United.
10:29United haven't been scoring as many goals this season, only 16 in the Premiership so far, for the perennial top
10:39scorers in the league.
10:42They got 87 last season in total.
10:46That's how Vikin's denied Van Nistelrooy.
10:49There was claims for handball there.
10:53Scholes.
10:55Let's it rip!
10:56And over.
11:09Six minutes to the break.
11:11Sylvester.
11:16Scholes.
11:18From United's brightest player, Giggs.
11:21Looked for a cheeky little back heel to Solskjaer.
11:23Got to him in the end.
11:25Sylvester.
11:26Oh, to be Schmeich as it is.
11:30Well, he's such a massive presence around the place.
11:33And not only in goal, when he talks, all the other players listen.
11:39He played to United three times with Villa last year.
11:44Didn't win any of them.
11:44Now then, Anelka, in behind, one-on-one.
11:49Oh, Barthes with a vital, vital save to keep Manchester United in reach.
11:56And Anelka almost had too much time there.
12:02But he'll be disappointed with the effort which was at saving height for Barthes.
12:12One thing Sir Alex Ferguson's been saying in the last couple of days is he's worried that United don't have
12:17quite the physical presence of Liverpool and Arsenal.
12:21They're title rivals.
12:24Van Nistelrooy.
12:25Giggs.
12:27Tried to cut back inside.
12:28I wonder if he was going to let a cross shot go there.
12:31Similar to the one he won the derby with a few years back.
12:36Anelka.
12:37Good ball.
12:38Into Gota.
12:39He's on his own, really.
12:40He has to go for it.
12:41That was close.
12:42Close.
12:44Sean Gota again.
12:47Pulled into space neatly.
12:50And that's a good effort.
12:56Oh, it's been a cracking half.
12:58Bit error-strewn.
13:00But, uh, thoroughly entertaining.
13:03And at half-time, Manchester City two, Manchester United one.
13:13Solskjaer's reverse pass.
13:14Asking a lot of Van Nistelrooy.
13:17Who's got it?
13:19But fouled.
13:21Sunji Hai.
13:30This ball asked a lot of Van Nistelrooy here.
13:34Probably not quite back up to full speed after missing four games recently with a tight hamstring.
13:41Berkovich.
13:42Moving around him.
13:43Anelka!
13:44Into Warnsko.
13:45It was a lovely ball.
13:46Just inviting the last touches.
13:49A clever player.
13:51Nikolas Anelka.
13:53The only question here is, should he have had a go himself?
14:08Up goes done.
14:10Good presence in the air.
14:18Manchester City starting the day in 14th place.
14:21They'll be 10th if they get the three points.
14:25Certainly until three o'clock anyway.
14:27Well, five in fact, until the other game's finished.
14:35Sylvester amid this cracking atmosphere here.
14:37In this 80-year-old stadium.
14:42Manchester City, remember, moving to the Commonwealth Games Stadium.
14:49For the start of next season.
15:01Dunne wins it well in the air.
15:02He's having a good game back there, Richard Dunne.
15:05Pretty steady.
15:07And I must say that Matomo and Beacons have settled down too, after looking a shade rusty at the start.
15:19Certainly the balance for Manchester City looks better, since they made those recent switches after a series of crisis meetings
15:27at the club.
15:28After they'd had six without a win, and were losing their way.
15:32Aliva Navier and Sean Wright-Phillips the victims of the changes.
15:38Both on the bench, by the way.
15:41Teato.
15:44Here's Jensen.
15:52Philip Neville.
15:54United, remember, in third place at the moment.
15:57Four points behind Arsenal, eight behind Liverpool.
16:02Lovely ball through.
16:03Berkovic, Gota's in here!
16:05And makes it 3-1!
16:08It's Sean Gota again!
16:23What a day this is turning out to be for Sean Gota.
16:28That was his 100th Manchester City goal.
16:33And what a day to score it.
16:37He was so strong, his first touch was good.
16:40Took him away from Blanc.
16:42Watch this again.
16:43All strikers can learn from this.
16:44First touch gets him away from the defender.
16:46That gives him a chance of a second one.
16:49And the second one puts the ball in the net.
16:56Still a long time to go in the season.
16:58And United, I'm sure, will have plenty to say.
17:04Another move breaks down.
17:07Berkovic, not much ahead of him though.
17:10Sunji Hai joining in.
17:14We think that VerĂ³n and Gary Neville are going to be substituted here.
17:18And that will be a bit ignominious for Gary Neville on a day when he's made captain.
17:25But I don't think Sir Alex Ferguson has forgotten that error.
17:30The one that gave away the vital second goal.
17:37Scoles his little chip.
17:39Van Nistelrooy!
17:39In behind here, Vekens.
17:41What a challenge.
17:42What a challenge by Gerrard Vekens.
17:45He had to win that.
17:46He so easily could have given away a penalty.
17:49But he won the ball.
17:54Off come VerĂ³n and Gary Neville.
17:57On come John O'Shea.
17:58And Diego Forlan.
18:05O'Shea, presumably, to play right back.
18:08And Phil Neville gets the captain's armband.
18:17Well, there might be a few repercussions from this.
18:21Signs that Sir Alex Ferguson is deeply unimpressed with what he's seen.
18:25Geerts slid it low.
18:27Solskjaer was there again.
18:29And saved by Schmeichel.
18:32Well, Solskjaer's run to the near post was a clever one.
18:36Look at that.
18:37He jacks the run.
18:38There he is.
18:40Forlan.
18:41He's got options.
18:43And one of them is Solskjaer out here.
18:45But look at Dunne.
18:47He's a 14-stone defender.
18:50But a bit quicker than you might think.
19:00Cementing his place in the side, I'd say, for the foreseeable future, the young Irishman.
19:08And Kevin Keegan told him to prepare to get his head down and do some work and stop his drinking
19:16sprees off the pitch.
19:17There would be a future for him at Main Road.
19:19And it looks like, for the moment, he's heeding that advice to some effect.
19:25And Van Niestelrooy goes down under the challenge of Matomo.
19:29And there is no penalty given.
19:32And now the Manchester City players are talking to Paul Durkin.
19:35And they think maybe that Van Niestelrooy was looking for something.
19:40Now, what's he given here?
19:44Oh, well, did he win the ball?
19:47Just about everywhere you look in the Manchester City side,
19:50you're seeing players who are having good games.
19:55They want this badly.
19:58Giggs, danger, little header again.
20:01And this time O'Shea.
20:02And Schmeichel was in the right place.
20:13They're usually rattling them in at over two again.
20:20Forland.
20:22Now Giggs.
20:25Sylvester.
20:27Very deep, finds Solskjaer.
20:30Back down for Giggs!
20:31Saved valiantly by Schmeichel,
20:35who is denying his old club here fairly heroically.
20:44No shade, a young man from Waterford in Ireland.
20:47Here he is again.
20:48Getting a lot of games this season.
20:51Fouled, free kick to United.
21:00Well, United have come up with late winners in this game.
21:04Often enough.
21:06City fans will remember that,
21:08but now they need two,
21:09just to get level.
21:15Sylvester.
21:17Up goes Solskjaer!
21:19That was nearly one of them!
21:20And Schmeichel grabs it,
21:22down by the post.
21:25Well, the United hero is a City hero today.
21:30He hasn't often been threatened,
21:32but when he's been asked the question,
21:34he's had the answer.
21:46Forlan, good ball.
21:47Solskjaer to Van Nistelrooy,
21:49who goes down on the edge of the box.
21:52And this time,
21:53the free kick's given,
21:54but right on the edge of the box.
21:56United want the penalty,
21:58they say it's inside.
22:00But I must say,
22:01at first sighting,
22:03I think Paul Durkin's got this right.
22:05Dunn's challenge, yes,
22:07was just outside,
22:08though Van Nistelrooy fell inside.
22:10Cracking decision,
22:11to be honest with you,
22:12by the referee.
22:14Though United will never believe it.
22:18Three additional minutes.
22:26Like it could be a Giggs left footer.
22:32Taking their time, United.
22:34They'll do well to remember they need two.
22:36It is Giggs!
22:37And the wall does its job.
22:39Corner.
22:41Corner.
22:42Corner.
22:44Corner.
22:45Corner.
22:46Corner.
22:47Corner.
22:47Corner.
22:47Corner.
22:48Corner.
22:48Corner.
22:49Corner.
22:49Corner.
22:50United.
22:53Desperate for something now.
22:55Sochar on the back post.
22:57Oh, and how did O'Shea miss?
22:59How did O'Shea miss?
23:03That was unbelievable.
23:09It's seen here that O'Shea had to score his first ever Manchester United goal.
23:16But somehow it stays out.
23:18Don't ask me how.
23:19Put that in your catalogue for misses of the season.
23:28And if City didn't know it was their day already, they do now.
23:34Anelka, is he going to rub salt in the wounds?
23:36Ferdinand with the challenge.
23:38Ref saw nothing wrong with it.
23:48City fans, screeching reminders to the referee to blow for time as Solskjaer breaks forward.
23:57It's going to be City's first win over United since 1989.
24:06In the last ever league derby at Main Road.
24:12Listen to the noise around here.
24:14Horlock anywhere will do now for City.
24:18Skulls fouled him after the ball had gone.
24:27They're celebrating now.
24:29The party's beginning.
24:30And I tell you, it won't finish until the early hours of the morning, if then.
24:38It's been a long wait for Manchester City.
24:40And they've deserved it.
24:423-1 winners.
24:43First time that they've beaten their great rivals for 13 years.
24:47A good performance.
24:49What a day for Peter Schmeichel and for Kevin Keegan.
24:53It's City's day.
24:55It was indeed a fabulous win for Manchester City.
24:58And a victory their fans have been craving for 13 long years.
25:02It proved to be a good first season back in the Premiership too.
25:05As the club finished in 9th place on 51 points.
25:10The defeat was a bitter pill to swallow for United fans.
25:12But at the business end of the season, the club once again sat on top of the Premiership pile.
25:18As United overhauled Arsenal in the title run-in to win their 8th Premiership crown.
