00:00Have you come to rescue me? Sorry, Eric, not today. To one who I owe the pleasure.
00:06Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most memorable times a movie aged like curdled
00:12milk.
00:12But I'm back now, and I'm going to make things right.
00:18The Fate of the Furious
00:19When this film drove to theaters, audiences were less focused on the heists, and more curious about what was happening
00:25behind the scenes.
00:26Dwayne The Rock Johnson had made a social media post calling out a certain co-star.
00:30A certain co-star who happened to be the face of Fate and the Furious.
00:34You see, your team is about to go up against the only thing they can't handle.
00:40What's that?
00:43You.
00:44Fueling the fire was the fact the two stars barely shared the screen, with them allegedly having parallel shooting schedules.
00:50Given all that, watching the movie now is a very different experience.
00:53When this whole thing is over, we're going to find a location, and I'm going to knock your teeth so
00:56far down your throat, you're going to stick a toothbrush right up your ass to brush them.
01:00Considering The Rock eventually left the mainline films to star in his own spin-off, the unspoken tension in Fate
01:05of the Furious is impossible to ignore.
01:07Now you're going to need to get a team you can trust.
01:10Oh, I already got one.
01:12Heart of Glass
01:12German director Werner Herzog has always been, well, committed to his work, and that's putting it nicely.
01:19For example, in order to achieve his vision for 1976's Heart of Glass, he actively hypnotized his cast before each
01:26and every scene.
01:34And I sleep on the light of my mind.
01:34Herzog thought the only way to capture the film's dreamline tone was to take agency away from his actors, which
01:40led to some genuinely unsettling performances.
01:42If you can even call them that.
01:44And I sleep on the light of my mind.
01:48There's no way to separate Heart of Glass from the reality that this wasn't acting.
01:52It was literal manipulation.
02:07Justice League
02:08DC's answer to The Avengers was anything but heroic.
02:12Marred by studio interference and personal tragedy, Justice League was recut, reshot, endured an entire change in director, and then
02:19was promptly dumped in theaters.
02:21Maybe I'm scared because...
02:23I'm meant to be...
02:34Looking back, it's no wonder the result is a tonally incoherent box office bomb.
02:38If there's any silver lining, it's that original director Zack Snyder got to release his original vision on HBO Max
02:44in 2021, but that only highlighted how thoroughly the theatrical cut of Justice League had been mangled.
02:55With the benefit of hindsight, it's not a shock that's marked the beginning of the end for the DCEU.
03:11It's no secret summer blockbusters who love blowing up skyscrapers.
03:14However, Armageddon couldn't have imagined that its opening scene would hit differently just a few years later.
03:19Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, viewers were a bit more hesitant to check out a movie that seemingly
03:25prophesied the mass destruction of New York.
03:27Why are we not going?
03:29Well, you know why?
03:30Because this is New York City.
03:31Anything could have happened.
03:32Listen to that.
03:33Let me see.
03:33It could have been a terrorist bomb.
03:34Could have been a dead body.
03:35Somebody shot stabbed.
03:36Especially since, in an even eerier turn of events, a cab driver in the movie literally name-drops Saddam Hussein.
03:43Saddam Hussein is bombing us!
03:48What was supposed to be pure popcorn entertainment was forever tainted by that dark day in history.
03:53Although, in a way, that also makes Armageddon an interesting time capsule of what life was like before 9-11.
04:09The Abyss.
04:1070 hour weeks in cold water tanks is enough to run down anyone.
04:14Pair that with an intensely precise director, and it's no surprise shooting The Abyss left everyone ragged and upset.
04:20Anything goes wrong down here, they can say whatever they want happened.
04:23Give the folks medals.
04:24Relax, will ya?
04:25You're making the women nervous.
04:26Ed Harris reportedly sobbed during Drives Home.
04:29Mary Elizabeth Mastrantiano had a complete breakdown on set, and Michael Biehn nearly drowned.
04:34Director James Cameron allegedly responded by adding more pressure to the cast, leading to one of the film's most iconic
04:40moments.
04:41No!
04:42No, she has a strong heart!
04:44She wants to live!
04:45Come on, ladies!
04:47Come on, baby!
04:48The scene where Harris' character screams while desperately reviving Mastrantiano, that wasn't just acting.
04:53That was an actor at his limits.
04:55It's a great film, but when watching it, you have to wonder if it was worth it.
05:03Fight!
05:04Fight!
05:05Fight!
05:07Fight!
05:08Fight!
05:09Fight!
05:11Fight!
05:15Cleopatra.
05:16The most interesting part of this lavish historical epic is what happened behind the camera.
05:21We're talking about scandals, bankruptcies, and whole marriages falling apart.
05:25I love for you.
05:27No.
05:28Your master must not be love.
05:32Never love.
05:33Production was an absolute disaster from day one, thanks to Elizabeth Taylor's failing health.
05:38But things went from bad to worse, when the leading lady began a steamy affair with her co-star, Richard
05:43Burton.
05:44If only to assert your own authority and power, otherwise inevitably in time we will lose everything.
05:51Both were married at the time, a fact the tabloids used to spark this rumor into a cultural firestorm.
05:56Cleopatra itself was swallowed by its controversies, and nowadays, the only time it's worth revisiting is to remark on how
06:03this trainwreck got made in the first place.
06:05But I will never be free of you.
06:09The Pianist
06:10A standing ovation at the Academy Awards should be a career highlight.
06:14Of course, you'd have to actually be there to appreciate it, which Roman Polanski wasn't.
06:19He was overseas, suspiciously refusing to re-enter the state after various serious allegations were levied against him.
06:32The kind of allegations that make you wonder about the well-being of every child on set of The Pianist.
06:38That didn't stop Polanski from winning Best Director, but it did color the film in a very harsh, unforgiving light.
06:43Don't you have a drop of water? He's dying. My child's dying of thirst. I beg you. I beg you.
06:51To this day, the severity of Polanski's supposed crimes make it impossible to separate the art from the artist.
07:04Out for Justice
07:04Out for Justice
07:05In this action thriller, Steven Seagal plays a hardened New York detective who decides to take justice into his own
07:11hands.
07:11It's ironic, then, that while shooting Out for Justice, he was sitting squarely on the opposite end of the moral
07:16spectrum.
07:23Reports claim that at least three different women in the industry accused Seagal of making unwanted sexual advances during the
07:30making of the movie.
07:31Combine that with four other actresses criticizing Seagal for what we'll call late-night casting sessions, and it painted a
07:37devastating picture for the Hollywood creative.
07:40Maybe he just happened to be doing Richie's girlfriend at the same time. I don't think so.
07:46As you can imagine, it's hard to buy Seagal as a justice-seeking cop when, as soon as the cameras
07:51turned off, he was anything but.
07:57Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
07:58Joan Crawford and Betty Davis may have been bitter rivals, but together, they share the honor of Hollywood's most infamous
08:04feud.
08:05You see that on full display in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.
08:19The electricity between them is practically nuclear. Davis supposedly took their fight scenes too far, while Crawford filled her pockets
08:27with rocks to make carrying her as demanding as possible.
08:30The list goes on.
08:45Rumor has it, their feuds seeped into their Oscar campaigns.
08:48For those in the know, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane isn't just a wild ride.
08:52It's basically a documentary of two legends duking it out to the bitter end.
08:57You'd been so cruel to me at the party, imitating me, making people laugh at me.
09:05Mulan. A fairy tale? No.
09:08This live-action remake was a full-on nightmare for Disney.
09:11Even setting aside all the questionable changes to the original animated feature,
09:142020's Mulan was irrevocably embroiled in political controversy.
09:19I betrayed my family's trust.
09:23I made choices I knew would risk their dishonor.
09:27The worst of it came in the film's credits, where viewers discovered parts of the movie were filmed near Chinese
09:32detainment camps.
09:33All at once, a story about embracing Chinese culture became a walking indictment of it.
09:44The blowback was swift and harsh, eclipsing any of Mulan's success beneath a mountain of fan rage.
09:51Even years removed from the controversy, it's clear this remake did not bring honor to us all.
09:55And it is I, should apologize.
09:59Breakfast at Tiffany's.
10:01Cultural sensitivity has changed a lot since 1961,
10:04but it's hard to think there was ever a day where Mickey Rooney's Mr. Yuniyoshi was okay.
10:09Miss go right three.
10:11Miss go right three.
10:13Someday.
10:15Someday.
10:16Miss go right three.
10:17The white actor in Yellowface, complete with prosthetic teeth, taped eyelids,
10:22and an exaggerated accent embodies every racist Asian stereotype imaginable.
10:27Each time he appears, the film grinds to a hall for what was meant to be comic relief, but plays
10:32as straight up racism.
10:33Miss go right three.
10:35I protest.
10:38It's a real shame given how charming and iconic the rest of Breakfast at Tiffany's is.
10:42Still, its legacy is now forever tarnished by choices that were inexcusable then and downright unwatchable now.
10:49You cannot go on or keep ringing my bill.
10:52You disturb me.
10:53You must have a key made.
10:55Crash.
10:56In something of a real head-on collision, Crash is universally considered the very worst Best Picture winner at the
11:01Academy Awards.
11:02I think it would be best if you just went upstairs right now.
11:05And what, wait for them to break in?
11:06I just had a gun pointed in my face.
11:09You lower your voice.
11:10And it was my fault because I knew it was gonna happen.
11:13So how did it take home the trophy you ask?
11:15That's easy.
11:16Its biggest competition that year was Brokeback Mountain.
11:19A queer love story that, despite heaps of critical acclaim, still proved a touch too controversial.
11:24I wish I knew how to quit you.
11:30Why don't you?
11:31In the years since, many pundits have theorized that Crash only won because it was the safer alternative to the
11:37envelope pushing Brokeback Mountain.
11:38The industry wasn't ready for the story of two gay men, and instead, were treated to one of the most
11:43baffling Best Picture winners ever.
11:45Please don't touch me.
11:46Don't touch me.
11:47Don't touch me.
11:47I'm not gonna touch you.
11:49But there's nobody else here yet, and that's gasoline there.
11:54We need to get you out of here right away.
11:56Eyes Wide Shut.
11:58Have you ever wondered what Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman would be like in a cult?
12:01Well, look no further.
12:03No, Eyes Wide Shut isn't a documentary, but we can see why you'd think that.
12:18The film focuses on a secret society of masked individuals who perform bizarre rituals, manipulate information, and are altogether creepy
12:26as heck.
12:26However, the narrative takes on a very different lens when you remember Cruise and Kidman, who were married at the
12:32time, were both active Scientologists during filming.
12:34Remove your clothes, or would you like us to do it for you?
12:41You can't help but wonder if they saw the irony.
12:43Either way, it makes for a very strange viewing experience, that's for sure.
12:47And no dream is ever just a dream.
12:53Gods and Monsters
12:54At the climax of this period drama, Brendan Fraser's Clayton becomes the victim of an obsessive Hollywood director, played by
13:00Sir Ian McKellen.
13:01In a vacuum, it's a difficult scene to stomach.
13:04But for Fraser, it would soon become his reality.
13:07You want steely muscles, you God.
13:12During the hashtag MeToo movement, the actor revealed he'd been groped by an executive of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association
13:19in 2003.
13:20Fraser pushed back, and his career suffered for it.
13:23Fraser saying,
13:24He was overcome with panic and fear.
13:26I felt ill.
13:28I felt like a little kid.
13:29I felt like there was a ball in my throat.
13:31I thought I was going to cry.
13:33It took the better part of two decades for him to reclaim his career highs of the 90s and early
13:382000s.
13:39Knowing what derailed his stardom turns Gods and Monsters from a captivating drama into an eerie prophecy.
13:44I want you to wear this.
13:46Why?
13:47Just so that I can see the artistic effect.
13:49You have a very human body against the inhuman mass.
13:53Oh!
13:53Very striking.
13:55I don't know.
13:55Oh, come on Clayton!
13:57Just for a minute, just so that I can see the effects.
13:59King Richard.
14:00Despite a lauded career best performance from Will Smith, the only thing people will remember about this movie is what
14:06happened during the 2022 Oscars.
14:08Fair enough, yes.
14:09Come on, you sure you're the best?
14:10Well, I don't know, he said it.
14:12Richard, can I be frank?
14:14I think you should be whoever the hell you want to be.
14:16When presenter Chris Rock made an untoward comment about Jada Pinkett Smith, Will climbed on stage and unleashed the slap
14:22heard round the world.
14:23Walking up to the stage and right up to Chris Rock.
14:27Oh, wow!
14:28The audience stunned in the moment.
14:31As if that wasn't awkward enough.
14:32An hour later, Smith returned to the stage to accept his Oscar for King Richard.
14:36To say the film's merits were overshadowed would be putting it lightly.
14:40It's a cruel twist of fate.
14:41Will's star power is what put King Richard on the map, and his actions are also what destroyed its legacy.
14:47I have never been more proud of a person in my whole life.
14:52Pretty Baby.
14:53The phrase gets thrown around a lot, but there is no doubt that Pretty Baby couldn't be made today.
14:58Considering it follows the grooming and exploitation of a young girl, its story is too fundamentally controversial.
15:04Particularly since it starred in underage Brooke Shields.
15:07Let's just say she really bore it all for the role.
15:10Hey.
15:11You know how to kiss?
15:12Of course I do.
15:13Everybody does.
15:14While Shields has gone on the record saying that production took every precaution to make her comfortable, the finished film
15:19is still a ghastly test of endurance.
15:31Pretty Baby was extremely controversial upon release, but something tells us it would have never seen the light of day
15:36if it tried to hit theaters now.
15:38And all the other men like me.
15:41Don't you like me?
15:42Patch Adams.
15:43This is perhaps the one and only Robin Williams performance that won't leave you smiling from ear to ear.
15:48That's not a doc on his work.
15:50On the other hand, Williams is at his best here as a med student curing patients with laughter.
16:03The issue is that his character, Patch, endured many struggles with mental health.
16:07After Williams' tragic passing in 2014, seeing him act out a role with such similar issues is simply too painful.
16:14I've moved seven times in the last year.
16:18I've had several jobs.
16:22Nothing seemed to fit.
16:24I don't seem to fit.
16:26Patch Adams is a devastating case of art imitating life, only in this case, it came 16 years early.
16:32You create man.
16:34Man suffers enormous amounts of pain.
16:38Man dies.
16:43Maybe you should have had just a few more brainstorming sessions prior to creation.
16:48The Island of Dr. Moreau.
16:49Watching this movie is only half the story.
16:52The real meat is what went on behind the scenes.
16:55The Island of Dr. Moreau was over budget, out of time, and filled to the brim with once-in-a
17:00-lifetime disasters.
17:01For example, Bruce Willis dropped out of the leading role, and was replaced by Val Kilmer,
17:06who then was served divorce papers on set.
17:08Animal rights activists drove him out of the States.
17:15It got so bad you couldn't cage a rat without leading in his rights.
17:19Rob Morrow quit due to the frequent rewrites, but that's better than Marlon Brando,
17:23who grappled with a personal tragedy by only sporadically making an appearance on set.
17:27Marlon saying, no, no, no, no, no.
17:31Instead of it being about violence and all this pain and suffering,
17:36I think that all of the animal people should get together,
17:40and there should be a grand celebration like a bar mitzvah.
17:43Did we mention the production was hit by a hurricane, too?
17:45The funny part is all that drama is infinitely more interesting than the actual movie.
17:50Floundering right out on the sea with Richard, not really knowing what was going on,
17:54or maybe he was knowing what was going on, but not able to convey his directing to the right people.
18:01All the money in the world.
18:02In what was bad timing of epic proportions,
18:05serious allegations surfaced against Kevin Spacey just as this movie was ready to release.
18:10Spacey faces a civil trial over allegations from actor Anthony Rapp, best known for his role in Rent.
18:17The media storm meant there was no way to avoid the backlash.
18:20So, in what was either madness or brilliance,
18:23director Ridley Scott meticulously edited Spacey out of the film and reshot his role with Christopher Plummer.
18:29Talk about movie magic.
18:30My legal team is the best there is.
18:33If it wouldn't stand up in court, they wouldn't have written it.
18:36While the resulting cut is definitely a bit wonky,
18:38you have to give the production credit for pulling off such a drastic last-minute change.
18:42Sadly, the movie still failed to generate much audience interest,
18:46and is only remembered for being that one movie that almost starred Kevin Spacey.
18:50There's the purity to beautiful things that I've never been able to find in another human being.
18:56X2
18:57Bryan Singer's work in this X-Men sequel is seen very differently after 2019.
19:02The director has faced several career-ending allegations, and while he tried to deny them, his time in the limelight
19:08faded fast.
19:09You have to understand, we thought Bobby was going to a school for the gifted.
19:13Bobby is the gifted.
19:14We know that. We just didn't realize he was-
19:16We still love you, Bobby. It's just this mutant problem is a little-
19:21What mutant problem?
19:24complicated.
19:25X2's exploration of youth and sexuality makes it impossible to divorce from Singer's alleged actions during that period of his
19:32life.
19:36I'm sorry.
19:38It doesn't help matters that the story features mind control and a group of kids being captured by an evil,
19:44anti-mutant villain.
19:46X2 may be one of the best superhero films, but the serious crimes its director faced means it's not always
19:51easy to recommend.
19:52There's been a change of plans.
19:55Now, I know all the humans.
19:59Find all the humans.
20:01Everyone.
20:03The Flash
20:04Released in 2023, The Flash had the ingredients of a superhero spectacle, heart, nostalgia, and multiverse chaos.
20:11You're-
20:13You are in here.
20:19Yeah.
20:22I'm Batman.
20:23While Barry Allen was racing through time to save his mom, lead star Ezra Miller was making headlines for all
20:29the wrong reasons.
20:30I completely broke the universe.
20:32Multiple arrests, disturbing allegations, and violent outbursts are hardly the resume you'd want for a cinematic hero.
20:38Frankly, casting someone accused of choking a woman and grooming minors as a crime-fighting, selfless Barry Allen just didn't
20:45sound right.
20:46The film bombed at the box office.
20:48Sure, other factors came into play, but Miller's controversy didn't exactly help things.
20:52It just goes to show that off-screen chaos can sometimes mess up even the most ambitious universes.
20:58Barry!
20:59That was actually only half-stupid!
21:01Snow White and the Huntsman
21:02This dark fantasy film reimagined the classic fairy tale with a gritty, battle-heavy twist.
21:08Do not hesitate.
21:09They look in their eyes and do not pour out until you see their soul.
21:24I couldn't do that.
21:28You might not have a choice.
21:29Still, it did pretty well at the box office, even though it received mixed reviews from critics.
21:34But while the film looked like a fairy tale reboot, it wound up becoming Hollywood drama meets tabloid nightmare.
21:40Why?
21:41Well, in 2012, a scandal erupted when Kristen Stewart was photographed in an intimate moment with Rupert Sanders, the film's
21:48married director.
21:48If I had a choice, I'd take you far away.
21:53Keep you safe by my side.
21:56This happened while she was still dating her Twilight co-star, Robert Pattinson.
22:00As expected, the scandal triggered a tabloid frenzy and ignited fan backlash.
22:05Stewart and Sanders eventually apologized.
22:07Honestly, it was such a mess, and now we can't think about the film without remembering that real-life betrayal.
22:12It seriously broke hearts.
22:18Mr. and Mrs. Smith
22:19Doug Liman's spy thriller is an entertaining romp that sees Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt play rival assassins tasked to
22:26kill each other.
22:27I thought I told you not to bother me at the office, honey.
22:30Well, you are still Mrs. Smith.
22:31Well, so are a lot of girls.
22:36Careful, Jane. I can push the button anytime, anywhere, sweetheart.
22:39Baby, you couldn't find the button with both hands and a mat.
22:42But let's be real.
22:43Most people can't talk about the film without thinking of one of Hollywood's biggest scandals.
22:47It all started on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, when rumors swirled that Jolie and Pitt had more
22:52than just on-screen chemistry.
22:54Satisfied?
22:56Not for years.
22:57The catch? Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston.
22:59Though they denied having an affair, the timeline of his divorce and his new relationship with Jolie fueled media speculation.
23:06Eventually, Jolie and Pitt admitted they fell in love while filming.
23:09Once you know that, it's hard not to feel like we're watching the moment things changed, for all three of
23:14them.
23:14Sometimes you have to battle through.
23:16Hmm.
23:17That's marriage, right?
23:18Yeah, you take your best shot and...
23:21Oh, we redid the house.
23:23Call Me By Your Name.
23:24Luca Guadagnino's coming-of-age drama was released in 2017, way before Armie Hammer's controversy surfaced.
23:30I can't believe you changed it again.
23:32Oh, I changed it a little bit.
23:33Yeah, why?
23:34I just played it the way Busoni would have played it if he'd altered Liszt's version.
23:39And what is wrong with Bach the way Bach would have played Bach's version?
23:41Bach never wrote it for the guitar.
23:42In fact, we're not even sure Bach wrote it at all.
23:44Forget I asked!
23:44At the time, it was celebrated for being a tender, sun-baked romance with emotional death and unforgettable performances.
23:51But years later, that image took a hit when Hammer became the center of a disturbing allegation in 2021.
23:58That's funny, I...I thought that...
24:02Yeah, I know what you thought.
24:04Multiple women came forward with disturbing claims of sexual coercion and even cannibalistic fantasies.
24:10The fallout damaged Hammer's image and his career, so you can't blame anyone who can't watch Oliver without viewing him
24:16in the light of Hammer's real-life allegations.
24:18It might sound dramatic, but for some, it may be hard to watch the film without feeling a sense of
24:22unease.
24:23You're not gonna be, like, in any trouble.
24:26That's not what I'm talking about.
24:27Bohemian Rhapsody
24:28While Bohemian Rhapsody got mixed reviews, fans still loved it for being a dazzling celebration of Queen's legacy and Freddie
24:34Mercury's brilliance.
24:35Another one bites the dust. And another one gone. And another one gone. Another one bites the dust.
24:41Even so, some viewers may find it uncomfortable to watch given the director's history.
24:46Truthfully, this biopic looked like a triumph, but the production? Not so smooth.
24:50I need a break. I'm sick of it.
24:54What are you saying, Freddie?
24:59The film's original director, Bryan Singer, was fired mid-production for unexplained absences, late arrivals, and tension with the cast.
25:07But that wasn't the worst of it.
25:09Around the film's awards season run, serious allegations about sexual misconduct and abuse against Singer resurfaced.
25:15As a result, he was removed from the film's BAFTA nominations.
25:18So while the film shines on, its legacy is somewhat tainted by the actions of the man behind the camera.
25:24For those keeping track, that's two great movies ruined by Bryan Singer's career implosion.
25:28No time for losers, because we are the champions!
25:37Rebel without a cause.
25:38Can we really talk about the most tragically cursed movie cast in Hollywood history without bringing up this coming of
25:44age classic?
25:44You're tearing me apart!
25:48What?
25:49You say one thing, he says another, and everybody changes back again!
25:53It captured teenage angst with great authenticity.
25:55But the real heartbreak happened off screen.
25:57I know one thing.
26:01I'm not going back in that zoo.
26:03I'm never going back.
26:04All three of the film's leads died young and under eerie circumstances.
26:09James Dean was the first, killed in a car crash at just 24, a month before the movie premiered.
26:14Sal Mineo, who played Plato, was stabbed at age 37 and what looked like a random robbery.
26:19Natalie Wood drowned under mysterious circumstances, which still sparks questions.
26:23So it's only natural if viewers just don't watch these youngsters wrestle with teenage problems, but also mourn stars who
26:30never got old.
26:30The ghostly feeling is hard to shake.
26:33Help me.
26:36Jeff.
26:38I Heart Huckabee's.
26:39Known for its quirky existential style, I Heart Huckabee's is a film where characters grapple with the meaning of life.
26:46Who sent you here?
26:47Nobody.
26:48Found your card.
26:49Where?
26:49Some fancy restaurant that I'd never been to before.
26:52It appears to promote spiritual awakening, compassion, and letting go of ego.
26:56That's why the infamous behind-the-scenes incident between actress Lily Tomlin and director David Russell feels so jarring in
27:02comparison.
27:03In 2007, leaked footage showed Russell and Tomlin in a very tense screaming match.
27:08I'm not as brilliant as you.
27:10I can't keep up with you.
27:12No, but we're being very efficient with you.
27:14We're being very efficient?
27:15We're being patient with you.
27:16Russell went as far as hurling profanities at Tomlin and even throwing objects in a complete loss of control.
27:22Isn't it ironic that a movie that preaches about zen-like calm and enlightenment had such an aggressive making?
27:27We certainly can't blame anyone who can't separate the film's message from that on-set meltdown.
27:32How am I not myself?
27:34How am I not myself?
27:36How am I not myself?
27:38How am I not myself?
27:38The Conqueror.
27:39No movie is worth dying for, right?
27:41But this 1956 historical epic, which flopped at the box office, ended up costing far more than anyone bargained for.
27:48I beg forgiveness for her, O'Conn.
27:50With such gestures does the tartar woman prove her love.
27:53Probably in pursuit of authenticity, The Conqueror was filmed in Utah, dangerously close to nuclear testing sites.
28:00The crew knew about this, but the government assured them it was safe.
28:03So, production went ahead.
28:05All of us go down to destruction.
28:07Radioactive waste was even shipped back to Hollywood for reshoots.
28:10Out of 220 cast and crew members, 91 developed cancer.
28:14Many, including actors like John Wayne and Susan Hayward, eventually died from the disease.
28:19Though it hasn't been conclusively proven the filming location caused these deaths, the grim possibility has led it to be
28:25considered one of Hollywood's deadliest productions.
28:28Grant that I may die swiftly.
28:30No!
28:31Jamoka!
28:32That is a favor I ask my brother.
28:34I hold you to your oath.
28:36Blade Trinity.
28:37This 2004 superhero movie wasn't just the end of the Blade trilogy.
28:40It marked the beginning of the end of Wesley Snipe's career.
28:44It's the end game, Blade.
28:46All their plans are coming to fruition.
28:49Why don't you just sit back and enjoy the show?
29:01I hate familiars.
29:04Reports say Snipe was unhappy with the choice of director, refused to leave his trailer, and communicated with the cast
29:10and crew using post-it notes.
29:11This troubled shoot cast him in a negative light and damaged his reputation.
29:16Not long after, he faced legal issues that landed him in jail, and his leading man's status in Hollywood quickly
29:21disappeared.
29:22Do you think they could ever grasp what it means to be immortal?
29:24You're not immortal.
29:27I must have heard hundreds of you rodents make the same claim.
29:30Once you hear about the backstage drama, like how Snipes allegedly refused to keep his eyes open, it's hard to
29:35unsee the tension.
29:36Instead of just another action flick, it feels like you're witnessing the unraveling of a star in real time.
29:41Blade.
29:43Ready to die.
29:48Who was born ready, mother f***er?
29:50Twilight Zone the movie.
29:51You thought this sci-fi anthology was scary?
29:54Wait until you hear about the tragic behind-the-scenes incident that shattered its legacy.
29:58Lady, help me please.
30:01In 1982, during the filming of Twilight Zone the movie, a helicopter accident changed everything.
30:07Vic Morrow and two children were killed in a Vietnam War scene gone horribly wrong.
30:12The kids had been hired illegally and worked past legal hours.
30:15The freak incident sparked public outrage over safety violation and the use of underage actors.
30:25Director John Landis and his crew were charged with manslaughter, though they were later acquitted.
30:30So, what should have been a revival of a beloved classic became one of Hollywood's darkest on-set tragedies.
30:36The Birth of a Nation.
30:38A technical marvel that ushered in many of the filmmaking techniques used today.
30:41This movie's impact on the future of the medium cannot be understated.
30:51And yet, there's more than a few reasons why they don't teach The Birth of a Nation in film class.
30:56The big one is it's often considered one of the most racist movies ever made.
31:00Every single African-American character is portrayed as a mindless, damaging caricature.
31:05Which is made all the worse since most of the performances are by white actors in blackface.
31:09Under a modern social lens, the truly abhorrent depiction of race relations overshadows any of the film's cinematic merit.
31:21It ends with us.
31:23Forget the on-screen fireworks.
31:25The juiciest drama here happened behind the scenes.
31:27Director and star Justin Baldoni had a seriously rocky relationship with leading woman Blake Lively.
31:33And by the time the film released, it had soured into a full-on publicity war zone.
31:37It actually gets worse.
31:38Yeah.
31:39No way.
31:39Not possible.
31:40It does.
31:40On one hand, you had fans calling out Lively for her cavalier treatment of the film's sensitive themes.
31:45On the other, there was Baldoni, who fielded allegations of on-set harassment and intimidation.
31:51This wasn't just mudslinging, though.
31:52Things got so bad, lawyers had to get involved, burying the film's box office success underneath a mountain of legal
31:58gossip.
31:58I thought we were friends.
32:00We are friends.
32:01Something tells us when people think of this movie, it won't be because of the storytelling.
32:05Better Off Dead
32:06Ricky Smith is an awkward deconstruction of the guy-next-door trope.
32:10He's rightfully called out for his very uncomfortable obsession with Monique, and spends most of Better Off Dead as the
32:16butt of a joke.
32:16Monique?
32:18This is Ricky.
32:21Ricky?
32:22This is Monique.
32:23The French foreign exchange student who'll be staying with us.
32:31It's all fine and dandy, until you realize Ricky is played by Dan Schneider.
32:35Yeah, Nickelodeon's Dan Schneider.
32:38For those who don't know, he was the creator behind several iconic kid shows like iCarly, Victorious, and Zoey 101.
32:44But his work has since been heavily scrutinized for putting young, female performers into highly inappropriate situations.
32:50Given that Ricky Smith is the exact kind of creep Schneider's accused of being, Better Off Dead is nigh unwatchable
32:56anymore.
32:57Monique.
32:59Monique.
33:00I had no idea where you'd gotten off to.
33:02You shouldn't make me worry.
33:06Lane.
33:07Ricky.
33:08I see you've made Monique's acquaintance.
33:12The Blind Side.
33:13A captivating true story of community, passion, and football, 2009's The Blind Side is an Oscar-winning crowd-pleaser for
33:20all ages.
33:20Tell me everything I need to know about you.
33:23Who takes care of you?
33:24A mother?
33:26Do you have a mother?
33:28A grandmother, maybe?
33:34Tell you what, Big Mike.
33:36We can do this the easy way, or we can do this the hard way.
33:39Or at least, it was until 2023.
33:42The film version of events see down on his luck Michael Orr, adopted by the Toohey family, who helped propel
33:47him into a mainstream football star.
33:4914 years later, Orr revealed the Toohey's hadn't adopted him at all, but rather invoked a conservatorship, which allowed them
33:55to profit off his likeness.
33:57He entered a conservatorship with the Toohey's, which is wildly different than an adoption.
34:04Kind of makes you question their motives, doesn't it?
34:06Even without touching on the white savior part of it all, the allegations alone are enough to change how you
34:11see the blind side forever.
34:13A beautiful mind.
34:14All it takes is a little digging to see that this biography isn't really based on a true story at
34:18all.
34:19The truth is that I don't like people much, and they don't much like me.
34:25But why?
34:26With all your obvious wit and charm.
34:28While John Nash was a gifted mathematician, and a recipient of the Nobel Prize in economics, that's about as accurate
34:34as A Beautiful Mind gets.
34:35It conveniently leaves out Nash's complicated history with women, his alleged anti-semitism, and how serious his schizophrenic behavior really
34:42was.
34:43A Beautiful Mind is definitely a well-made film, but it tries so hard to make you root for its
34:47main character, it becomes glorified fanfiction.
34:50Our conviction, it turns out, is the luxury of those on the sidelines, Mr. Nash.
34:57I'll try and keep that in mind.
34:58The truth doesn't always make for a good story, but trying to conceal it is a surefire way to destroy
35:04your movie's reputation.
35:05Last Tango in Paris.
35:07In this erotic drama, a young Marlon Brando begins a risque relationship with a young Parisian girl.
35:12So you're here.
35:14What did you answer?
35:15Go get the butter.
35:17I have to hurry, I have a cap dancer waiting.
35:20Go get the butter.
35:21When she rejects him, he takes what he wants with force.
35:24It's a harrowing scene in what is already one of the most explicit films ever made.
35:27But, to make matters worse, actress Maria Schneider had no idea just how far it would go when she showed
35:33up to set that day.
35:34In order to elicit a more natural reaction, both Brando and the movie's director withheld the specifics of Schneider's role.
35:40Let's talk about us.
35:44Okay.
35:45This place is so pitiful.
35:47It's a choice that left the 19-year-old utterly traumatized.
35:51Nowadays, the most famous scene in Last Tango in Paris is also the one we recommend fast-forwarding through.
35:56The Adventures of Milo and Otis.
35:59How controversial could a children's film about cats and dogs get?
36:02You're in the pipe, Milo.
36:03Try again.
36:06How does he do that?
36:08Milo wondered.
36:09Well, the answer is pretty darn controversial, especially when the production is accused of numerous counts of animal neglect.
36:15Since Milo and Otis were both played by real animals, many international humane societies launched investigations into whether the pets
36:22were properly cared for during the long shoot.
36:24No hard evidence was found either way.
36:27However, rumors of its eerily realistic stunt work has followed the adventures of Milo and Otis ever since.
36:32A dream about Otis and how they used to play together when they were young.
36:37Oh, would it ever be like this again?
36:39Would he ever see Otis again?
36:42We get why.
36:43These two furballs are so adorable.
36:45The mere thought of them being harmed in the making of this movie is completely unforgivable.
36:50Heathers.
36:51These days, a high school drama with murder, sexual harassment, and bomb threats would be yanked out of theaters faster
36:57than you could say, sorry, Heather.
36:59Hello, Jason Dean.
37:01Greetings and salutations.
37:04You a Heather?
37:06No.
37:07I'm a Veronica.
37:09Sawyer.
37:11But in the 80s, it was just good popcorn entertainment.
37:14Heathers was a teen thriller so divorced from reality, it could cut right to its razor-sharp social commentary.
37:19However, as the years go by, Veronica and JD's ultra-violent love story becomes closer and closer to everyday high
37:26school life.
37:27In an age where schools are common targets for acts of terror, Heather strikes a much darker chord.
37:31What are you talking about? You hated her, she hated you.
37:35If you want proof, just look at the ill-fated TV adaptation, which had to be pushed back again and
37:40again due to rising gun violence.
37:42Poltergeist and Poltergeist 2 The Other Side
37:45While some might find the movie too scary to sit through, in reality, Poltergeist is tough to revisit for reasons
37:51outside its narrative.
37:52Her name is Heather O'Rourke.
38:07The acclaimed child actor was the heart of the movie as Carol Ann, a young girl who's trying desperately to
38:12evade a ghostly trip to the otherworld.
38:14But, the scary movie became an eerie prophecy of sorts when O'Rourke passed away in 1988 at the age
38:19of 12.
38:20Given the real-life circumstances, seeing her character nearly die in Poltergeist 2 is extremely hard to stomach.
38:30In a way, it's a testament to O'Rourke's work. She's simply too convincing.
38:35Kramer vs. Kramer
38:36No judge or jury needed here. Dustin Hoffman is 100% in the wrong.
38:41Just tell me what I did. That's all. Just tell me what I did. That's so terrible.
38:44His commitment to method acting is commendable, but it crosses a lot of lines when he can't separate his castmates
38:49from their characters, such as in Kramer vs. Kramer.
38:52In the name of invoking a better performance from her, Hoffman repeatedly harassed co-star Meryl Streep.
38:57It ranged from insults, to slaps, to even throwing a real glass at a wall without her knowledge.
39:12You can literally see the tension between them on screen.
39:16Knowing the extent of Hoffman's behavior reframes these top-tier performances into a case study of an extremely toxic work
39:22environment.
39:23American Beauty
39:24In 1999, Kevin Spacey found Oscar Gold for playing Lester Burnham, a man who pursues a scandalous relationship with his
39:30daughter's best friend.
39:31You've been working out, haven't you? I can tell. I was hoping you'd give me a bath. Very, very dirty.
39:43For years, it was THE Kevin Spacey role. Then, in 2017, the hashtag MeToo movement revealed that Spacey and Burnham
39:51had more in common than previously thought.
39:52Multiple men stepped forward accusing Spacey of unwanted sexual advances over the years.
39:58Immediately, American Beauty's Oscar Gold dimmed, with many finding the parallels too close for comfort.
40:03Hey, at the very least, they haven't edited Spacey out of this one... yet.
40:08Don't interrupt me.
40:09Even though Spacey has since been acquitted of liability, the damage to his image means there's no way to watch
40:15American Beauty without thinking of the scandal.
40:17The Shining
40:18The scariest part of this classic horror flick is what happened to Shelley Duvall.
40:22What are you doing down here?
40:29I just wanted to talk to you.
40:38Okay. Let's talk.
40:40As Jack Nicholson's character falls deeper into madness, director Stanley Kubrick knew Duvall had to serve as the audience surrogate.
40:47AKA, her job was to freak out in the final act.
40:50Kubrick, however, was unsatisfied with her work, and he made sure she knew it.
40:54Duvall was verbally berated, kept for long hours, and allegedly made to do takes over a hundred times.
40:59Before the film was finished, clumps of Duvall's own hair were falling out from the stress.
41:06We can't argue with the results. The Shining is a true genre-defining staple, but it came at way too
41:12high a cost.
41:13The Crow
41:14If you watched The Crow with no prior knowledge, you'd probably be enthralled by its unapologetic style and edginess.
41:20But sometimes, something so bad happens, that a terrible sadness is carried with it, and the soul can't rest.
41:29Then sometimes, just sometimes, The Crow can bring that soul back to put the wrong things right.
41:36Unfortunately, the film takes on a whole new meaning when you learn leading man Brandon Lee died on set.
41:41With only three days of shooting left, negligent handling of a prop gun put the entirety of The Crow into
41:47question.
41:47Eventually, producers decided to go forward with the theatrical release.
41:51But, considering The Crow features Lee's character rising from the dead to exact vengeance on those who wronged him, the
41:57actor's death isn't exactly easy to forget.
42:06All things considered though, it's a feat The Crow ever saw the light of day in the first place.
42:10The Wizard of Oz
42:12Dorothy's trip to Oz was made with a Herculean effort from the cast, many of whom have actual scars to
42:17prove it.
42:18You stay out of this, Glenda, or I'll fix you as well!
42:21Oh, rubbish! You have no power here!
42:23Dig on, before somebody drops a house on YouTube!
42:26For example, the original actor for The Tin Man had a severe reaction to the aluminum makeup, and was hastily
42:31replaced.
42:32Then, there's Margaret Hamilton, who suffered third-degree burns during a botched stunt.
42:36Oh, and there's also the original director, who was fired part-way through production for creative reasons.
42:41Most of all, we can't forget Judy Garland, who endured non-stop ridicule and harassment during shooting.
42:46Please, sir! I've got to see The Wizard! The Good Witch of the North sent me!
42:51Suffice it to say, if you follow The Yellowbrook Road, you're going to stumble on a lot of classic Hollywood
42:56scandals.
42:57In Cold Blood
42:58After Robert Blake stepped into the shoes of murderer Perry Smith back in 1967...
43:03You never meant it.
43:07About going to Mexico, did you?
43:10Did you?
43:15Sure, baby.
43:18Sure we're going.
43:19Later in 2001, Blake experienced another murder trial, only this time, he wasn't acting.
43:24When the body of Blake's second wife turned up in his vehicle,
43:27he became the prime suspect in the news story of the year.
43:30Even though Blake was acquitted of murder charges,
43:32the court of public opinion was slow to forgive and forget.
43:35It's especially hard given his performance in In Cold Blood,
43:38where Blake convincingly placed someone charged with the very same crime.
43:41Please, try to control yourself.
43:44No matter your opinion, it's easy to see why many opt out of seeing this movie.
43:49Contagion
43:49Years before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the world into quarantine,
43:53a sci-fi thriller hit screens with an uncomfortably similar premise.
43:57You wait a few days, this will be tweeted and YouTube all over the planet.
44:02Based on the name, it's obvious what Contagion is about.
44:05But it went viral in 2020, for more than its plot.
44:08No, the movie also features several small details about pandemic life that feel incredibly apropos.
44:14The masking, the social distancing, the bevy of conspiracies and social unrest.
44:19Contagion basically predicted exactly how the world would respond to a mass outbreak.
44:23You really think this Dr. Hextall's CDC person is Jesus in a lab coat.
44:28The government rushed the trials. The lawyers indemnified the drug companies.
44:33It's quite a storytelling feat, all things considered.
44:35Although, that's also why many think it hits too close to home.
44:39Powder
44:39A solid but unspectacular installment in Disney's live-action catalog,
44:43the only time anyone mentions Powder anymore is to bring up the movie's director, Victor Salva.
44:48I'm also the writer-director of Powder and Peaceful Warrior and Rites of Passage.
44:52I love drama and I do drama very well too.
44:55In 1988, he was convicted of gross acts towards the underage star of his film, Clown House.
45:00To reiterate, Powder is a Disney movie.
45:03A convicted felon not only got another directing gig, but this time for one of the most family-friendly companies
45:08on Earth.
45:09You're not here to ask me questions.
45:13You're here to find out how I cheated.
45:16It's the only way you can make sense of it.
45:19It's what you need to believe.
45:20You've let that sink in.
45:22Despite some concerted protests, this wasn't the end of Salva's career either.
45:26He'd go on to helm the cult hit Jeepers Creepers 2.
45:29Some of those scenes will definitely make you shudder.
45:31And not just because of the creeper.
45:32The fearless vampire killers.
45:34Spoiler alert, Sharon Tate dies in the movie.
45:37Dearly beloved brethren, come closer.
45:50This isn't all.
45:52This isn't all.
45:53Roman Polanski tries to save her character, but she falls victim to the vampires.
45:57And the credits roll.
45:58That wasn't the end of their story though.
46:00The performers fell in love and got married.
46:02Only for Tate to meet the same fate as her character two years later.
46:05You might know it better by the name, the Manson murders.
46:08It's one of the most notorious acts of violence in American history.
46:11So seeing Polanski and Tate unknowingly act out their future makes fearless vampire killers
46:16an incredibly disturbing watch.
46:17I'm not disturbing you, am I?
46:20Not at all, not at all.
46:22Vampires or not, this movie felt way too real.
46:25Manhattan.
46:26In 1979, Woody Allen dated a young girl while also exploring feelings for two other women in his life.
46:31Not a good thing.
46:32You should think of me sort of as a detour on the highway of life.
46:36Oh, sorry, that's not Alan.
46:37That's the plot of Manhattan.
46:38A movie he coincidentally wrote, directed, and starred in.
46:42If some of those details seem familiar, it's because Alan himself has faced serious accusations
46:47of uncouth behavior towards his daughter, Dylan Farrow.
46:50While nothing's ever been proven, the substantial media attention has stained much of Alan's cinematic legacy.
46:55Jesus, I'm shocked. I'm shocked. I'm surprised.
47:02Particularly the movie where he literally dates a teenager.
