Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer sharply criticized Donald Trump’s tariff agenda after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down key elements of the policy. Schumer argued the ruling validated long-standing Democratic concerns that the tariffs harmed American consumers, businesses, and global trade relationships.

He suggested the decision could weaken Trump’s economic leverage and predicted some Republicans may eventually distance themselves from the tariff strategy as its economic impact becomes clearer. The dispute underscores the broader political battle over trade, inflation, and economic nationalism ahead of upcoming elections, with Democrats framing the ruling as a victory for consumers and Republicans defending tariffs as tools to protect American industry and jobs.

00:35Mr. President, Americans breathed a brief sigh of relief last week
00:45when the Supreme Court knocked out Trump's harmful tariff proposals.
00:53Americans are suffering because Donald Trump is raising tariffs.
00:59People pay more for so many daily goods, so many groceries, for cars, for homes, for everything.
01:07And the American people hate the tariffs because they know it's raising their costs.
01:14And so, for a brief moment, there was a sigh of relief that you heard from one end of America
01:20to the other
01:21because the Supreme Court correctly said the President can't raise tariffs on emergency basis.
01:28Only the Congress can.
01:31But Donald Trump, who is in a bubble, has no understanding of what the American people need, feel, or want,
01:40reimposed the tariffs right away, and then he one-upped it, doubled down on it, and raised them again.
01:46And now Americans are back in the same position they were before the court decision.
01:53Higher prices, more inflation, harder to afford things, harder to pay the bills.
02:00And a good chunk of that increase, the difficulty in paying the bills, is because of Trump's tariffs.
02:08Democrats will not stand for it.
02:10And, in fact, the new tariff regime that Trump put in must expire in a few months and needs Congress's
02:18approval.
02:19I am here to tell Donald Trump and the American people we will not extend those tariffs,
02:26and they will expire in a few months.
02:28And, hopefully, then, Republicans will join us in not allowing Trump to raise tariffs,
02:35which so raise costs for the American people.
02:38Tariffs are highly unpopular among Democrats, Independents, and Republicans.
02:44Donald Trump, in his bubble, does not understand the burdens he is imposing on American families,
02:51but we Democrats do.
02:52And we will do everything we can to stop these odious tariffs that are causing so much harm,
03:00so much pain on American families.
