Fake news isn't a modern invention. It existed long before social media, and in Ancient Rome, it was used as a deadly weapon.

We often think of "fake news" as a product of the internet age, but history tells a different story. Over 2,000 years ago, Octavian (who would become the first Roman Emperor) used a massive propaganda campaign to take down his rival, Mark Antony. By spreading false stories and scandalous rumors, Octavian turned the Roman people against Antony, eventually leading to his loss of power and his life.

This proves that while our screens are new, human nature hasn't changed. Back then, lies spread by word of mouth and written scrolls; today, they spread through algorithms. In this video, we look at the origin of misinformation and how the first fake news story changed the course of Western history.
