01:14no need for you to wear your coat to take it off your school days
01:21love them i was wondering about black hole formation because i was laying in bed last night and i started
01:26thinking about how 99 of everything is empty space yeah i don't like to dwell on that because that's
01:31quite worrying or loathe them we know diameter is circumference divided by pie what is pie where did it come
01:41from you never forget them all right clear off scumbags
01:47damn at this school in essex 160 students are in their final and most important year and their head teacher
01:55has grand ambitions
01:59the mantra that we use is nobody leaves without enough qualifications to make the next step in their life
02:05but that's easier said than done sir i thought out crying for no reason is that normal um what your
02:13age yeah
02:15they're teenagers emotional in the nicest possible way it's a girl excitable it's the laughing always laughing
02:27and a constant challenge you will never ever come up against people who are as calm and patient as we
02:36are for the rest of your life
02:45this series reveals what life is really like in a modern secondary school feeling bruised
02:51for the teachers we are trying to deliver you a future i think we have a responsibility to give them
02:58the right chances you have no idea how much i like teaching you you have no idea
03:05and today's kids at the very start of adult life how you do this year will determine what part you
03:14take in life
03:21and let's get it
03:49I love my job and every day is different.
03:52I love the interaction with the kids, I love the fact that you can see them making progress.
03:59There's nothing to match it, nothing to touch it.
04:03I dreamed about you
04:08So happy Christmas
04:12I love you baby
04:15Stephen Drew has been the school's deputy head for the last three years.
04:19All our dreams come true
04:27Dum dum dum dum dum
04:36They got cars, makers, bars, they got rivers of gold
04:39But the window's right through you, it's no place for the old
04:42When you bust up a hand on a cold Christmas Eve
04:45Can you promise me Broadway was raining for me?
04:48The boys of the L.I.P.
04:51Toons!
04:52Come in!
04:54And the bells are raining over
04:57Yes?
04:59Mr. King
04:59Mr. King?
05:00Oh, I thought he was there, that shows how much I'm concentrating on too busy singing.
05:04Oh, you're very kind, thank you very much.
05:06Thank you, Adam.
05:08Oh, you're the gold masters!
05:09What are you going to say?
05:10Oh, I'm going to say
05:11Oh, I'm going to say
05:16Steve is so integral to the school, to me being ahead
05:21I would be half as good ahead without him, without a shadow of a doubt
05:27Hello, Jordan. Hello, Lee. Lee?
05:34I
05:34Am disturbed by the sight of your footwear every single day when I see it
05:38He is always this little sergeant major character, which you could see is exactly what he is
05:43You know he's one of those people who lives life really quickly and talks really quickly and walks really quickly
05:51Do you know
05:55You are
05:57I was gonna say how do you do this you've got out the window or something though as mr
06:04Goddard's deputy mr. Drew is in charge of discipline and enforcing the rules
06:08Vic needs somebody who is going to deliver his vision
06:12And I think sometimes he needs somebody who is slightly kind of you know sort of uber focused on everything
06:18He's very kind of obsessive about it who will just then make the things that he wants actually happen as
06:23a reality
06:25You may have your phone you may pick your hoodie up at the end of the day
06:28For mr. Drew reality starts at 8 40 every morning
06:32Excuse me young person from here
06:37Just in case for some reason you have been unable to understand the very very clear rule of the school
06:41that you attend
06:41We do not wear hoodies at this school
06:44So do not to do so you may pick your hoodie up from me at the end of the school
06:48day
06:48You appear to have used your hoodie in order to cover up the fact that you have chosen not to
06:52do your top button up
06:55Come here you may go you may go
06:57You are inside the building there is no need for you to wear that dead animal
07:01You may have your jacket from me at break and lunch and the end of school each day
07:05So as to avoid the ongoing constant conflict that exists over you wearing it in the corridors
07:11As deputy head Mike on a role is the gatekeeper is the person who's maintained the standards and the discipline
07:17is the one who's having most of those very difficult conversations
07:19If you step towards him and try and physically attack him I will restrain you
07:24Don't give a shit
07:25I know you don't
07:27Excuse me
07:29Excuse me
07:30Excuse me
07:31I have told you not to speak
07:34He's a bigger bullshitter than me
07:35I've told you not to speak
07:38Holy kid is chill man
07:39I always thought Mr. Drew because that everyone does
07:40He is an evil overlord who will completely incinerate you if you annoy him
07:45Put your report back on my desk
07:49Thank you very much
07:50But when I actually had him as history teacher is one of him
07:52He's actually quite fun
07:54He's completely insane
07:58Mr. Drew can be a legend
08:00But then when he wants to be he can be really annoying
08:04Anybody
08:05You know I give you credit for your ingenuity and your ability to get around systems
08:09And although you're probably one step ahead of me
08:11Please bear in mind I am always standing right behind you
08:14Catching up and as I catch up I deal with it
08:16I don't think you're a bad person Michael
08:18But on this occasion you've been caught so just accept it
08:20Yeah Michael thank you very much for your time
08:21I'm sure I will speak to you again at some point
08:23Hopefully in more positive circumstances
08:25At the end of the day I am going to be the brick wall
08:28I am going to be the brick wall
08:29What you want to do is on the other side of the brick wall
08:31And I'm afraid to say I am the brick wall
08:33And you are not going past
08:35You shall not pass
08:37Okay I'll explain it to you
08:38No because he didn't say I had a break's detention
08:42Stop
08:43No because he didn't say I had a break's detention
08:45So why should I do detention when I shouldn't even have one
08:48Stop
08:48No because I'm right
08:49Stop
08:50Oh my god
08:51Stop
08:53Thank you
08:54Being sent to Mr Drew is often the last resort for pupil discipline
08:58You have ten minutes to serve at lunchtime
09:00Because you have a cross on your report for your attitude during this lesson
09:03Since Charlotte started in her final year
09:06She's become a regular visitor to the deputy head's office
09:10Charlotte has become increasingly challenging as time has gone by
09:14But has moved to a whole new level
09:16As we've moved to kind of the end of year 10
09:18Start of year 11
09:19To the point where there have been times when she's just been completely uncontrollable
09:23And outrageous in her behaviour
09:25All teachers think they're right
09:26That does my head in
09:29And I was trying to explain to Mr Drew the other day
09:31That he's not always right
09:34And his voice just goes in through one ear and out through the other
09:36And I tell him all the time that he still goes on
09:39You will now decide whether or not you wish that to happen
09:42If you don't wish it to happen
09:43Then you will refuse to do the 20 minutes of lunchtime
09:46You will walk off from me
09:47And you will then be in a whole load more trouble
09:50Or you will decide to do the right thing
09:52There is no more need for us to have a conversation
09:54Yeah there is
09:55Go and sit down
09:56No there is
09:57Because why should I do another 10 minutes
09:59Go and sit down
10:00Go and sit down
10:01Go and sit down
10:01No
10:02Go and sit down
10:03No you get to talk to us
10:04Go and sit down
10:06One of the things that is different today
10:09Is that the boundaries between adults and young people
10:12Aren't as secure
10:13Aren't as solid as they were in the past
10:15You are not sitting properly on the chair
10:17If you do not sit with all four legs on the floor
10:18I will take the chair away from you
10:20What's on the floor?
10:21Why don't bother me?
10:22A lot of young people do seem to quite struggle
10:25With the concept of boundaries
10:26The word no
10:27It is quite clear that some young people
10:29Just do not understand the word no
10:31Nobody ever tells me in my life I can't do anything
10:33My parents never stopped me doing anything
10:35Why is the answer no?
10:36And that is something I think that is increasingly difficult
10:39With some young people
10:40Where they are being failed
10:41They are being failed by their parents
10:43They are being failed by society
10:45Because they are not learning the idea of no
10:49Come on sir
10:50Excuse me Charlotte I will come when I am ready
10:52Please don't start telling me what to do
10:53Well I am standing in the last lemon doing nothing
10:56But if you want to make someone like Charlotte succeed
10:59You have got to give a bit of yourself
11:00You have got to be prepared to let that boundary be broken down
11:04And if you can build out that relationship with that young person
11:06Make them trust you and make them believe
11:08That at the end of the day you have their best interests at heart
11:11And that whatever they do
11:13Tomorrow is another day
11:14To be honest with you
11:15Five minutes time is another day
11:18I do not wish to experience your unpleasantness
11:20So do not make me experience it
11:22Alright
11:22Am I amused?
11:23He's laughing at me
11:24Am I amused?
11:26I don't know I am
11:26Am I amused?
11:27I don't know I am
11:28What do you think about it?
11:29Am I amused?
11:30I don't know I am
11:30Do you think I am amused?
11:32Maybe
11:32Ok we are doing this until you give the correct answer
11:34Will I be amused?
11:35I don't know because I am not you
11:37Do you think I will be amused?
11:39I don't know
11:40I don't know
11:41I don't know
11:41Do you think I will be amused?
11:43Oh my god
11:44I don't know
11:45I think so
11:46I don't know
11:48I don't know
11:48Do you think I will be amused?
11:51Yes
11:51In the 1890s along comes this bloke called Baring
11:55Baring was a follower of Cock
11:58So therefore Baring used
12:01What?
12:02Follow the Cock?
12:03What?
12:04Oh yes
12:05So mature Sam
12:06while Gabby can hardly control herself.
12:09The German scientist bloke taught...
12:12Before becoming deputy head, Mr Drew was a history teacher.
12:15It's a lesson he still teaches for two hours a week.
12:19Oh, God.
12:21Actually, that's not bad, to be honest,
12:23because that is the third lesson running that I've said cock out loud in a very strong way,
12:27and that's the first time any of you have actually asked.
12:28Every time you say it.
12:30That's so funny.
12:31Without wishing to sound kind of flippant about it,
12:33a teacher has to entertain.
12:34Because at the end of the day, I think of the history lesson I've done this week,
12:38where we're talking about a 19th century cartoon from Punch about cholera,
12:42a waterborne public health disease,
12:44and you're spending 40 minutes talking about this cartoon from 180 years ago
12:48with a bunch of 16-year-olds.
12:49I mean, you know, if you look at it like that, dull.
12:52I'm just not interested.
12:53No, they chose history.
12:54And I've seen people do these things, and it just becomes so dull.
12:57But to me, teaching has got to be about making young people want to learn
13:02and letting them learn.
13:04I wish you just knew that.
13:05Oh, I'm dying. I've got cholera.
13:06It's really, really awful.
13:06Oh, I know.
13:07I'll come and stay in this nice hotel right in the middle of where you all live,
13:10and then I'll urinate and defecate all over the floor
13:13so all my germs and bacteria get out.
13:15But don't worry, because when that goes into the ground,
13:17the water will leach right into your drinking water,
13:20and then you can drink all my waste.
13:21So why would lodgings for travellers be a problem for public health?
13:26So I thought history was going to be quite easy.
13:29It was going to be about Nazis, Germany and all of that.
13:32But no, but all this medicine,
13:34the only medicine I knew about was paracetamol and cowpole.
13:38Chadwick has evidence.
13:39What evidence can Chadwick give you
13:41that poor living conditions make you die?
13:49Look at the graph.
13:51Look at the graph.
13:55Oh, that was cool.
13:58You look like a monkey.
14:02Hey, it's not like one to you.
14:05Woo!
14:05Yay!
14:06Happy birthday, Mr Drew.
14:09The day loves his job.
14:10Happy birthday time.
14:12We're still going to work.
14:13No!
14:13He's such a grump.
14:15Happy birthday time.
14:16Thank you very much.
14:17You're very kind.
14:19Have you all been nice this lesson?
14:21They've been lovely.
14:23They always are lovely.
14:24The highlight of my day is my hour with my history class.
14:27That is the highlight of my day.
14:29You have no idea how much I like teaching you.
14:32You have no idea.
14:37Mr Drew is amazing.
14:38Need more teachers like that.
14:39He's probably one of the best teachers in this school.
14:41The way that he just teaches and it gets stuck in your head so quickly.
14:47He's just such a good teacher.
14:49If I am a wealthy taxpayer in the 1840s, I don't want to pay for you poor people to have
14:57anything.
14:58And you're poor because you have too many children, you drink too much, you gamble too much, you smoke too
15:05much, and you don't work hard enough because you don't know about what?
15:08Germs.
15:09Okay, that's it.
15:11Right.
15:11Can you please make sure there's sheets in your book?
15:13I haven't got a book, sir.
15:14Unless you're Tom Panfield, then you've lost your book.
15:22Now I want cake.
15:23Damn it.
15:27Morning, Miss.
15:28Good morning.
15:29Happy birthday.
15:29Thank you very much.
15:31Happy birthday, Mr Drew.
15:32Lawrence, happy birthday to Mr Drew.
15:34Happy birthday, Mr Drew.
15:34Happy birthday.
15:34Happy birthday.
15:36Can you remember why you wanted to become a teacher?
15:40No.
15:42No.
15:43If you'd asked me when I was 16 when I was a teacher, no.
15:45If you'd asked me why I was a male, I wasn't going to be a teacher, no.
15:47If you'd asked me in my first or second year of university, why I was a teacher, no.
15:50I had no great desire at all.
15:53And I think as I went for my third year of university, looked around at other things I could do,
15:57I enjoyed my subject history, I enjoyed what I did,
16:00and I think I just spoke to other people who'd done it already and thought, you know, actually, yeah, I
16:03could quite do that.
16:08Oh, baby.
16:17Let's go.
16:25Oh, shit.
16:26If a guy don't throw like that, I throw probably.
16:34Ooh, got rocked.
16:36Got my office.
16:37Got my office.
16:38Holy shit.
16:39It's just nonsense, isn't it?
16:41It's just nonsense.
16:42If you're not man enough to do it from a distance, you come and stand there.
16:46I'd rock that kid, man, with a snowball.
16:48Oh, my God.
16:49Oh, my God.
16:51I'm going to win.
16:51I'm going to win.
16:52I'm going to win.
16:53It didn't snap.
16:55Oh, shit.
16:58Yes, sir.
16:59You're allowing him to do this.
17:01Yeah.
17:01Why?
17:03Why?
17:04Because it makes them happy.
17:05Yes, but now this means that every time a member of staff comes out, they're going to throw snowballs at
17:09them.
17:14Oh!
17:16Snowballs down!
17:17Bell's gone!
17:18Lesson time!
17:19Shit, I want rocked and kissed.
17:20Learning time started!
17:23Merry Christmas.
17:25What were you like at school?
17:30I was absolutely fantastically, beautifully, wonderfully behaved.
17:33No.
17:34I think that I was somebody for whom school was an entertainment and a challenge.
17:42And I think that I just decided I didn't want to be good, really.
17:45I don't think...
17:45Actually, that's probably unfair to myself.
17:47I don't think I particularly decided.
17:48I don't think I really thought about it.
17:50Stop it.
17:51Don't.
17:53Don't.
17:57Don't.
17:57Don't.
17:59Don't.
18:00Don't.
18:03You.
18:03That bloody serves you right.
18:05Go on.
18:06You will never, ever be out of a room.
18:09Oh no!
18:09Oh no!
18:10Leave him!
18:10Oh no!
18:10Leave him!
18:10Leave him!
18:11Leave him!
18:11Leave him!
18:11Leave him!
18:11Leave him!
18:12He's like he's OCD!
18:13It's a soreの gonna kill you!
18:15I think, the way in which I would describe it is, if I had to deal with myself at 14
18:20or 15 years
18:20old i think i would be getting rid of myself on a very regular basis i'd be calling my parents
18:26on
18:26a regular basis and i'd have me on report and i'd have me on everything else for the whole time
18:29because i just thought i knew it all knew all the answers and just wasn't interested and that was it
18:34and never knew when to stop some people would say i've never changed
18:41anything else anybody no thank you for this afternoon it's been bloody hard work i have to
18:45say this is probably one of the toughest after terms i've had i don't know about you lot but
18:49the hardcore kids we've got are really fairly hardcore at the moment um they are massively
18:55i think like most year 11s the vast majority of them just get on with it and just do it
19:08and will
19:08do really well i think that there are just a few more who are perhaps more challenging than maybe
19:15last year but not necessarily more challenging than we've had in the past but i also think
19:19we just get better at keeping going with them go on then tell me a bit about your behavior
19:25what about it hello where are you despite numerous visits to mr drew's office charlotte's behavior has
19:32not improved well you're not even left yet her obsession with her mobile phone is becoming a flashpoint
19:38with staff where are you i think mobile phones are one of the biggest disasters in the modern education
19:43system that exists absolute disaster in every possible way they are incapable lots of young
19:50people of coping with the possession of a mobile phone and doing education completely incapable dina's
19:57go oh safe mate ashley's got why did i agree to this because she's gone and done that thing
20:03if they do anything or less than whatsoever they confiscated there's no gray areas on that if the
20:07phone beeps because the battery's going low it will be confiscated okay phone and phone now
20:15it was it was my phone's in here what was it then i want it here don't shout mason
20:24jeez jesus right again well i am i want your phone you ain't having my phone
20:29shut up i'm not gonna go through this again well you ain't having my phone you always been like that
20:37no seriously no i actually ain't no you're 10 i think no you're seven and eight i weren't that bad
20:46but i was bad but you know and i was worse and then you're 10 i was worse and then
20:52you're 11 i was
20:54worse oh no is that word you didn't get checked early on let's see this look at my fingers you
21:02see
21:02this all right no look at me already look no i want you to look at me keep looking at
21:06me look at me
21:06what this was how much patience i had for you on monday and this is about now okay so do
21:15you often
21:15end up being isolated yeah
21:22like your phone again ah she is you know this very intelligent young person she is somebody who
21:29is unable to make the right decision who wants to express herself for the rest of it but actually
21:35sometimes as an adult and as the teacher you've got to be able to stand there and say you know
21:38something actually you need to stop because if you don't stop and if i don't stop you and if i
21:45don't
21:46sort of battle you and i don't stand there and stop you from doing it you will make a disaster
21:53of your life should i tell you something about your life should i tell you something in your life
22:00you will never ever come up against people who are as calm and patient as we are for the rest
22:08of your
22:09life so i suggest that you at the moment are simply reinforcing the view that people have of you which
22:16is where people actually say to me on a regular basis why do you bother and i spend my whole
22:23time
22:23telling people because she's worth it because she will do well because actually deep down there's a nice
22:28decent young person trying to get out your attitude is disgusting is that the battle i suppose for
22:37them to accept what you think is acceptable that is different from what they think is acceptable
22:43absolutely absolutely battle's an interesting word you think about a battle you know if you're a
22:49military historian you're studying a battle battles aren't always 24 hours a day completely head-on
22:55and charging into each other sometimes battles are actually about planning sometimes battles are
23:00actually about periods of lull periods of quiet and then periods of intensity so i think battle
23:04probably is a good word but it shouldn't be taken to mean it's a fight the whole time
23:08give me last week's report please do not have left it behind or not got it signed okay you've got
23:15gcses to
23:16do btex to do and any other uncle tom cobbly exam under the sun so charlotte's been on report for
23:25the
23:25last month with some improvement in her behavior she's been handed back to her form tutor all right from
23:32tomorrow morning you are going to go and register with mr minyan over now is registering mr minyan over
23:37any kind of problem yeah why because because she annoys you the moment she enters the room her
23:43breathing annoys you her face annoys you no she has a go at me all the time i have a
23:48go at you and you
23:48don't seem to be annoyed mr goddard has a go at you you don't seem to be yeah but it's
23:51not that you
23:51have got me for a reason i've done done something wrong so mrs minyan over has a go at you
23:56and you
23:56don't think she should so what do we do charlotte i've got her back i'll give you a suggestion for
24:04how we're going to deal with mr minyan over okay mr minyan over has a go at you and you
24:08say
24:10okay miss i'm sorry that that thing happened yeah but what if it weren't me no no stop stop listen
24:16is that okay miss i'm sorry i did it no is that quite frankly miss it weren't me
24:24mm-hmm perhaps we could try that one yeah what is it today this is nine
24:33we've got a new strategy for miss amelian over charlotte's going back to register
24:37mr minyan over but every time mr mino says something to her she argues with her
24:40so this week's strategy of mr minyan over is when mr minova has a go at charlotte charlotte is going
24:45to
24:45say i'm really sorry that that thing happened miss yeah and we've discussed how that isn't actually
24:53apologizing for it but just says i'm sorry that the incident happened oh that's so politician
24:59like isn't it it is regrettable indeed it is no don't no no no don't say it is regrettable charlotte
25:05say miss i'm really sorry that that thing happened okay that will be this week's strategy okay
25:11all right off you go do it thank you very much bye bye
25:16bye bye she's gonna get into another most students will respond eventually to mr drew's advice
25:24but not all some are so disruptive they test the school to its limit
25:32okay stop stop stop because you are 15 or 16 years old i am 38 years old anyway i'm talking
25:39no you
25:40will talk when i tell you you can at the moment you won't whenever you want yes yes the most
25:46difficult students are given what's called a fixed term exclusion meaning that they're suspended from
25:50school for up to a week i'm looking to sleep between three and five days to be honest okay because
25:57i
25:57think you know it needs to be that very very clear and stark message but if these measures fail
26:03schools can permanently exclude a child for mr drew though expelling a student isn't the solution
26:12when i was at school there was always that fear of being expelled so if the school strives for no
26:16permanent exclusions then there isn't that fear in the students so ultimately they're always going to
26:21win no no yeah of course they're gonna i want them to win but i want them to win i
26:27don't want them to
26:27lose permanent exclusion is wrong wrong morally wrong if i permanently exclude you from this school
26:35you are significantly more likely to be involved in criminal activity you are more likely to go to
26:39prison you are more likely to fail your qualifications you are more likely to not
26:42succeed so that's wrong i'll tell you what becoming a no-fail organization is not easy is it
26:51it's gonna kill us on route well you a lot to be honest and then when he explodes you'll be
26:56covered
26:56in body parts and detritus and other stuff that's flying around so i'll tell you what i worry about
27:01all the time right so tell you what really really worries me i think like a channel four thing
27:06is that people watch it and they just think we're a bunch of idiots yeah
27:11no no you know just kick her out just kick her out and the nice people go oh how hard
27:16they're working
27:17how hard they're trying all this of it and then bloody hell michael gove stands up the house of
27:20commons and is asked have you seen what that deputy yeah man's an idiot yeah kick her out just kick
27:26her out this is not what we want in the first education system that school is the cause of the
27:31problem that i that's the main thing i worry about with this documentary is that we do everything that
27:36our colleagues and education will think is fantastic great and all our kind of social all the rest of
27:40everything is great and the greater public watch here and just think you're a bunch of idiots i know
27:45what do they have to say to you in order for you to get rid of them no wonder you
27:50have such
27:50discipline problems you're all spineless no i have remembered something i want to say i think on
28:02friday morning i think on friday when they line up for the exams that they shouldn't line up outside
28:06because it's too cold and we ought to get them to gather in the gym and then send them from
28:11the gym
28:11to the sports hall i agree i just unfortunately i have had a number of conversations with parents
28:17whose hoodies i have whose hoodies and such like i've confiscated in the last few days i've had a number
28:22one particular parent who just basically said well i'm sorry but at the end of the day my child not
28:28being freezing cold is more important than your uniform and you are just inhumane we have a
28:33different stance to lots of the other schools in the town for the community we serve they have a lot
28:37of inconsistency in their life you know mum and dad are both working hard they're looking after
28:40themselves or single parents or whatever there's a lot of variation in their lives which is it's just
28:46stressful you know change is stressful inconsistency is stressful i think they just found it was it was
28:50consistent lovely connor you look stunning we expect things to be good we're very intense on attendance
28:57with intense and standards generally so if you choose to be very intense on these things in order
29:03to allow the young people to have the best opportunity they can then you have to accept that things are
29:07going to be fairly relentless
29:20it's 8 15 on wednesday morning and for mr drew a rule breaking red hoodie is about to turn his
29:26day
29:26upside down oh shit okay stop and take off before you come any further because i know that it has
29:35been a
29:35source of great conflict over the last few days so we'd like to start the day wouldn't we come later
29:40without conflict yes all right shall we start with conflict
29:49no exactly so let's not start with conflict don't tell me to shush she's one of the most challenging
29:56young people that we've ever had definitely one of the most challenging young people we've ever had by a
30:00long way because she has the attitude that i always say that young people have once a young person
30:06decides they don't care and they don't care what you do you're stuffed good you may have a break time
30:14thank you no you may have a great time right then we shall start the day by walking around school
30:19together yeah no i won't go away he can be all right sometimes you can have a laugh with him
30:26but
30:28when you're like annoyed and he comes up to you and you just i think it's the way he talks
30:33as well
30:34he talks like sarcastic so pleased that we're starting the day with conflict which carmelita has now
30:40chosen it sounds describing it's just like something that won't go away deep down just at the moment
30:48buried so deep there's this really kind caring person she just can't find it oh dear now you're
30:57excluded okay that solves that problem well carmelita it's entirely up to you because after i've been to
31:05my meeting i will be phoning your mother to inform her that you're excluded so that's not a very start
31:08to
31:09day is it but if that's your choice in the matter yes the penalty for swearing at a teacher is
31:14a one
31:14day exclusion damn hey your choice it's a lovely hat but we don't need to wear it i don't care
31:26where's
31:27your tie in my pocket then let's do all of the uniform things shall we do
31:39she do do okay nobody else is allowed to exclude anyone today because i've already
31:45excluded someone before we even started today yes that'd be carmelita because she had her hoodie on
31:49so i said how about we avoid conflicts and how about we solve the problem and you give me the
31:53hoodie
31:53no you can just piss off i said well there we go carmelita she said should i go home now
31:58i said well
31:59that appears to be the choice that you've made carmelita doesn't it so i shall bring your mom when i
32:02have a moment thank you very much can we just keep her off till january now then i like her
32:07she's one
32:07of my favorites okay brilliant russell then you ring her mum and say unfortunately mr drew has deliberately
32:12caused your daughter to swear at him but i don't want to exclude her i'd like her to stay in
32:16school
32:16and do an english gcse with me hi it's russell king assistant head of pastmore i'm calling on behalf of
32:23mr drew because i met carmelita before school started today and asked her to take off her hoodie
32:28because she was indoors um and carmelita basically refused and he ended up following her around the
32:32school to ask her oh sorry no um so mr drew just tapped me on the shoulder and corrected me
32:38on that
32:38sorry this thing kind of turned into a protracted period of mr drew following her around um eventually
32:43she just told mr drew piss off mr drew she's just told her mum that you pulled her by her
32:54shoulder
32:55she can say whatever she wishes to say at no point whatsoever were i within two meters of her
33:00hi i i did hear that mr drew um i just relayed that to mr drew as well and he
33:06said that at no
33:07point was he within even two meters of her so he categorically denies that accusation um i was i
33:14was calling to um because mr drew's initial instinct was to exclude carmelita for what she's done
33:18and i said well hold on a minute mr drew um i've got quite a good relationship with carmelita
33:21she did a lot of good work from you in the term however now i've heard carmelita lying about mr
33:27drew um and
33:32i'm sorry are you accusing me of that please oh that's the end of this conversation goodbye that's
33:41horrifically rude
33:45i absolutely refuse to have anything to do with that woman she accused me of licking your backside
34:05oh
34:05kept his mouth shut let the guide rules dictate that any accusation of assault must be dealt with
34:10immediately by mr goddard my job is ahead the first and most important thing is to keep people safe
34:17it strikes at the core of what school is about you know parents choose schools because they trust
34:21them to do the right thing for their young person and the very very worst thing you can do is
34:26to is
34:27to put them in an unsafe situation with somebody who's supposed to be trusted she's got this red
34:31hoodie that she wears all the time yeah and if you tell her to take it off yeah she either
34:35argues
34:35and takes off or does it but the moment you're back to her and she puts it back on again
34:38she told
34:39me to shut up get lost all the rest of the day she said well you can just piss off
34:42because i don't
34:42want to talk to you about it i said fine in that case then you'll be excluded for swearing at
34:46me
34:46so she then says to mum mr drew grab hold of my shoulder at which point russell said to her
34:52mum
34:52clearly carmelita has now not only sworn but has also made an accusation of assault against a
34:57member of staff okay thank you that's a big accusation
35:07what's happened today i've walked in yeah and then he was just like kept on coming near me
35:14saturday and i'll take you guys i was like no i don't want you to and he just kept on
35:18carrying
35:18on speaking i was just like touching my shoulder and that like trying to bring me back to get my
35:23jacket i was like get off where did that happen outside toilets okay obviously i need to look on
35:31cctv footage for that because i take members of staff assorting students really seriously
35:38and the accusation you've made is that you've sorted you according to your mum
35:44well at least i've admitted that i'm pissed off because it was
35:47i'm asking what i'm trying to get to the bottom or have i got member staff that's a danger to
35:52young
35:52people who can't control themselves in which case i'd need to suspend him wouldn't i
35:58come and show me where he said you make contact with you so i can go and check the cctv
36:02first please
36:07so the initial conversation happened sort of down the tech corridor is that right
36:12sort of down the end there yeah
36:15there there he went like that and his hand was like my shoulder show that footage
36:24so i've got his arm out or grabbed you or made contact i can't you need to give me
36:30exactly what happened because obviously i've got a camera there which will see it quite clearly
36:34and the camera at the far end that will see it quite clearly so
36:37that little bit no the black circle that black circle there and that black circle up there
36:41yeah because obviously that was locked at the time and i was talking around and he's got his arm
36:46out and he went like that he's like swiped it down and i went sir what you're doing so he
36:50did or he
36:51didn't make contact yeah he went like that right and i was like sir what you did he goes you
36:56need to
36:56give me your jacket back now and i just saw it and then i walked away
37:01for the pupils and the staff's protection the school has its own network of cctv cameras
37:07hi mate um can i review something on the cctv camera
37:12it's a channel 10 camera between 835 and about 845. we're looking for dreary
37:22coming in that direction towards the camera there that's it 914.
37:33there's no contact us all there is there come here come in please
37:38little liar
37:45right hand screen
37:49remains a couple of meters away no contact at all
37:53that's not i don't believe you i can't believe you because it's not true
37:57it's quite simple photographic evidence we can get a call if we need to
38:02come back around
38:04that's that stuff boys and girls no matter how you play that
38:07you try to get them in big trouble
38:14guys are doing it for me
38:23hi it's mr goddard
38:26hi uh i've got young carmelita with me
38:29just going through obviously she made an accusation against a member of staff this morning so i've
38:34just i've just been through that with her we've just reviewed it on cctv footage we've got the
38:38whole incident mr dreary wasn't within arm's reach of her at any time
38:42no no problem i took her seriously and you know please ask her you know i took her seriously
38:46i take all accusations like that seriously i've looked at the camera i've looked at the cameras all
38:51the way around um followed it around but there was no contact at all
38:59yeah obviously she needs to she needs to come home and we'll see her in january
39:05sorry all right thanks a lot bye bye
39:09he owes that man an apology there was no contact carmelita he hasn't assaulted you in any way you
39:14made a false accusation against a member of staff well that's what your mom but that's what your mom
39:18said so that's all i can deal with your mom's your adult your mom's the adult in the situation she
39:23will only react to what you say now you can try and deflect from the fact that your behavior is
39:27unacceptable by making accusations against staff however i will always look at them seriously
39:31because my job is to keep you safe i do feel i keep you safe and actually the unsafe person
39:37is you
39:38your behavior is unsafe because if you make accusations against staff their futures are on the
39:42line their mortgages their houses their families and i don't accept that that can ever happen
39:48and i'm disgusted you try and ruin somebody's life by doing that carmelita it's not good enough
39:54go home don't want to see you till january
40:00and she can piss off that's exactly what i just said
40:06she hard of hearing that's up guys i'm sorry oh my god what a morning
40:15i'm just going to sort out your tie yeah crest below the knot yeah i'm just the head teacher
40:20peanut agent there there you go oh boy ladies afternoon i mean you're all right
40:29right gosh it's hot in here isn't it
40:32you've done your time you can go now
40:37no you're doing half an hour you can go cam and follow you just get up and go you've actually
40:41got
40:41five more minutes to do okay but you know something i just need to talk to mr goddard if
40:45you want cam and you can come back and do it later do you want to come back and do
40:47it later
40:48no sir cameron do you get the point of what i said to you yesterday yes are you sorry yes
40:52bye
40:53bye following an allegation against mr drew head teacher mr goddard has spoken to the pupil's mum
41:00i phoned her up and said just to let you know i've taken carmelita's accusation of assault by mr
41:05drew very seriously i've spoken to her taken a statement i've reviewed the footage on cctv and
41:11unfortunately your daughter's lying well fortunately yeah yeah pushing her well it's funny because it
41:22came from grabbing her through to pushing her through to yeah he did that as i went past and i
41:27was like
41:27okay it is a worry that there is always the potential that some malicious allegation is going
41:32to cause problems but then that can happen to anyone people lie you know children lie adults like people
41:40lie and if you spend your entire life saying i'm never going to put myself in a situation where
41:46someone can lie about me then you're not going to do anything so i'm not going to blame carmelita for
41:52that she she does the wrong thing fine we move on she makes her apology eventually you know she will
41:59finish with eight gcse's we will be on our knees and need to sleep for the whole of august as
42:05a result
42:05for she'll have passed it all i was almost delirious today i i i i couldn't be cross i couldn't
42:12be
42:12anger could be anything not joel's did yesterday which basically killed me at the end of the day
42:16obviously period five had to go and teach and about 15 minutes later turns up in i'm not sure who's
42:24a bex conway or anna fernando's lesson with one of those plastic cups what's he got in it that'd be
42:29some of my smoothie out of the fridge i was absolutely outraged honestly i was
42:36do you know of all the things that's happened in the last two days that's pissed me off more than
42:39anything that has absolutely pissed me off more than anything that has absolutely pissed me off more than
42:42anything i really did it steve is just what he does amazes me at times his work ethic his passion
42:49his willingness to be kicked and get up again it's something that you can't really measure
42:54it's remarkable
42:58seems like cool dude and god as well
43:05it's the final senior team meeting before christmas
43:08it's not a bit personal good after yeah good idea mate what have you got
43:12wash and wax oh wow and a chamois leather is that why you asked for your car
43:19it's hardly secret girls is it it's hardly a secret center
43:29someone's laughing already oh
43:34what the hell oh yes designer beaver
43:42i've never seen that
43:46these people run a school
44:10i think one of the things that i believe about our school is that it is a happy place it
44:22is a place
44:22where people come it is a place where i think young people can feel safe can feel trusted can feel
44:27believed and i think it's a school where we are prepared to do anything to go to the next level
44:32and the next level the next level again in terms of what needs to be done
44:45tune i like young people i find them interesting i find them exciting i find them invigorating
44:53i just think it's so grotesque hypocritical of adults in the modern age to say that young people
44:59today are worse they're not worse they are a product of what we as a society create and they
45:04have less opportunity to be children
45:11so yes it's hard work but why is hard work a bad thing hard work is surely what makes people
45:17better
45:17better so yeah it's hard work but okay good thank you i like hard work
45:50okay
45:51want to use that beaver word as the code word ladies and gentlemen up to you if you want to
45:57use it designer beaver in the comments down below holy shit ladies and gentlemen this shit was
46:04great we got to talk about it i wish there was a lot more teachers like drew goddard was cool
46:10as
46:10well let's chat about it oh man yo homie was accused of licking that backside ladies and
46:18gentlemen i don't know about you all but this shit is interesting as hell ladies and gentlemen
46:24for me welcome to essex here checking this out the kids seem really no different from you know
46:32kind of how i was growing up always going to be some knuckleheads here i will say though
46:38at least in my case the guys definitely did more damage or or acting up one or two girls were
46:47kind
46:47of problem childs as well especially like in a high school day but most of not uh most of the
46:54girls were more of the kiss asses on the teachers and stuff because we had a lot of guy teachers
46:59so some of them were kind of on the young you know uh more the hip so a lot of
47:07the girls would kiss
47:08ass and shit like getting extra credits and all that bullshit like that really kissing ass of the
47:14teachers so here i'm seeing a little bit of the girls acting up i was i was loving that shit
47:19oh man
47:20you know listen we've been watching we've watched ladette to lady lads army um you know that'll teach
47:29them and now this and this is really cool i will say listen i i've said if you're new here
47:34growing up
47:35i didn't do well in school some classes i excelled with but they had to be as cool as drew
47:44was because
47:45if they weren't man most of my classes were like the guy from the dry eyes commercial back in the
47:52day
47:53with dry eyes you know like that freaking guy that just had that freaking monotone voice that just put
48:00you to sleep like and that was like my history class kind of teachers they were just born as shit
48:06and that's why you know listen i i didn't pay much attention in class that's why i couldn't regurgitate
48:11dates and blah blah blah blah blah even probably now maybe not so much but yeah i know a little
48:16something something you know but not you know back then yeah it just was horrible here so across the
48:22pond kids act up do the strange you know crazy shit pushing boundaries seeing how far they can go but
48:30shorty right there um i was marmalita marmacita some shit i was almost called a mamacita for a second
48:37here uh marmalita i believe she did a huge crazy effing um you know lie there you know that's a
48:47huge
48:47ass accusation but got her gotta follow protocol and everything you have to take that serious you
48:52know what i mean somebody's saying some shit number one you need to check it luckily they got cctv
48:57footage there to to call her out on her bullshit but like honestly yeah she should be getting some
49:03repercussions there besides those couple days or i don't know i would be giving her like mad extra
49:09homework to be doing like because yeah she could mess up a guy's livelihood not to jump the gun but
49:15many
49:16women any ladies have jumped the glide you see it uh and it destroys the guy's career or some shit
49:25and then the guy and you find out the guy is innocent and but this guy's reputation was tarnished
49:31for so long you've seen it a lot of times um yeah you just feel damn you feel bad so
49:37for that guy to
49:38get in that situation but you know you you can't be afraid like he was you know uh drew was
49:43talking
49:43about you know you just you gotta go head on with that stuff he knows he didn't do that stuff
49:49thankfully
49:49the footage will you know uh help him out in that situation but i think he was funny and so
49:54what i'm
49:54trying to get at with drew is that if i would have had a cool ass history teacher like him
50:00somebody
50:01that you know it he seems kind of cool kind of on the hip side but very passionate about his
50:08job wants
50:08the best out of you if kids see that you kind of will uh gravitate to that because um i
50:15gravitated
50:16towards those cool teachers that you know were not so strict and you know down the book and kind of
50:22had a little bit more open-minded that was how i got to learn i think the the greatest
50:28teachers know how to reach everyone and again no disrespect i had some good teachers i don't want
50:33to say i never had no good teachers because i did but you know a lot of teachers they just
50:38go by the
50:39book regurgitating shit but don't have no way of making it entertaining it's like when we saw the
50:46kids taking the chemistry doing the practical shit doing the you know physical stuff to it
50:50and that gravitates them everybody doesn't learn but you just regurgitating 1914 this and that
50:56bullshit you have to find a way to reach a lot of students and stuff and many did not uh
51:02and that's
51:02the greater sign of a great teacher like that passionate like a drew but also he seems like he
51:09has good you know he has a lot more responsibility to do the other teachers that we kind of seen
51:14in the
51:14in the background they all seem really cool one thing that you can say they all seem very passionate
51:19about that and teachers today whole different ball game at least from what i've been seeing
51:25because you know uh i try to tell my nephew to don't don't rush being an adult because that's a
51:31whole new ball game there be a kid enjoy your youth you know while you're young you know he's
51:38about 13 and i'm like yo blow it down don't rush and stuff but the worst thing that happened
51:45i was in high school eventually cell phones started popping up not to the extreme length because from
51:542011 that's a that's a bigger jump there but the phones that we had was just text message maybe you
52:01played a game called snake on it um some people had the nokias uh you know i i had one
52:08of those kind
52:08of flip phone ones but from like uh sprint or some shit and yeah it was just text messaging you
52:14might
52:14have been able to take a picture on it um and then yeah just you do your phone call thing
52:20so but now
52:21with the way the kids are more distracted ipads all this shit that's the worst thing that's happened
52:26because it's changed the way kids you know most kids ain't focused on shit no more their attention
52:34span is horrible and you know they're just addicted to it you know um they're super duper addicted to it
52:41so you saw that charlie was like on the phone talking bullshit or reading messages while the
52:47guy was kind of talking like we're not really paying attention well the other girl as well that
52:51was next to her was on her phone as well so i think that phones in classrooms in schools were
52:57the biggest
52:58no no i always put my shit on silence um i actually listen on that for some reason you know
53:04what i mean
53:04but i think that yeah kids have it worse as far as with the phone stuff now you see some
53:09schools
53:10making it that hey you can't have your phone now that should have passed out back at the end of
53:15class and that's what they need because yeah these kids can't focus man they're distracted on
53:21tiktok or instagram or fake whatever whatever it is there uh now and stuff i mean i remember being in
53:28class even with the computers man we were playing shockwave games and stuff i was playing mini golf
53:34man i was playing some mini mini golf games on the computer and shit and kids will find ways they
53:41will find ways to adapt but the cool thing yeah i i enjoy seeing shows like this uh seeing how
53:48the kids are learning or not learning uh the resilient people i mean that um the rebellious people
53:56you know it just it just reminds me it brings me to a good place so right now we see
54:02some naughty
54:02girls here you know some bad ones and again from my experience it was mostly the dudes really really
54:10getting in trouble and stuff so i i mean this might sound wrong but it's kind of nice to see
54:14the girls
54:15getting in trouble because most of the time the girls in my classes would straight up kiss asses for
54:20all the teachers like really just like it's like when you see the kids give an apple to the teacher
54:26they will go to the next level like all the girls would just straight up be kissing ass to all
54:32the
54:32teachers and shit i'm like in my head i'm like this bitch man like damn man i'm here struggling and
54:37shit these guys kissing ass for better grades and stuff i'm here struggling man but i mean like damn
54:43man so i used to get upset but um yeah this is a really cool show great introduction makes me
54:49want
54:49to see more there's humor to it but there's learning to be had um and yeah you know this guy
54:54is kind of
54:54like the enforcer i look at him drew like the enforcer as well that that enforced the harsh rules you
55:01know
55:01rules are there and uh you know without that structure chaos has ensued so i enjoyed it uh
55:08shout out to the homie wentworth uh i hope that you guys enjoyed it use the code word i don't
55:13know
55:13if youtube will allow it and shit like that but you know leave it to be but that was some
55:19crazy ass
55:20christmas gifts there but man from looking at the teachers and staff they look like they really enjoy
55:25what they're doing and yeah i want to see some more so anyways i'm going to make that happen uh
55:30leave
55:31your thoughts in the comments down below if you enjoyed it hey if you went to school in essex let
55:35me know as well maybe shit uh yeah because this one was at 2011 so you can definitely tell that
55:40the
55:40phone's definitely got a lot more advanced so the capabilities is going to be more more options
55:47more distractions so um yeah anyways we'll have to see some more anyway peace take care be well
