00:00Thank you
00:32Good afternoon and welcome on this brisk January day to the Countdown studio and those of you at home who
00:38have hobbies I guess, are working away to your heart's content. The trouble is my hobby is a sort of
00:44an outdoors hobby, tinkering with my old tractors. Nothing, nothing pleases me more than to just smell the petrol as
00:53it drips slowly from an old Solex carburetor onto the floor. Is that the sort of thing that might appeal
00:59to Rachel?
01:01What are your hobbies Rachel? Not tractors, why tractors? Do you plow stuff?
01:06I love the clatter of old machinery, I love the, I mean frankly nothing quickens the pulse greater than to
01:12look at the clattering old machinery and the spinning power take off at the back. So dangerous, it excites me
01:20enormously.
01:21So do you have a field?
01:23I've got a few fields actually, yeah.
01:24And do you, so do you plow, do you actually use them to do stuff?
01:26I don't do any plowing, no, but I mow them a lot and I've got an old bin on the
01:30back and you go around and collect rubbish and put logs in and just generally sort of you know think
01:35that you're actually working but actually you're just having fun.
01:38Okay.
01:39You're getting married in August, aren't you?
01:42Er, yes.
01:43If you haven't fixed your transport to the church, I could offer you one of two tractors, a little grey
01:52Fergie or a lovely shiny red Massey 35, which would you like?
01:57They're not, you haven't got a Lamborghini tractor then?
01:59No, they do make them, but they're a little bit out of my price range. I could put you and
02:03your beloved in the bin at the back and take you to the church, I won't charge you.
02:08Well luckily we're not having a church and we don't need any transport.
02:11Can I take you to the registry office or wherever it is you're getting married?
02:14Er, not really, but thanks for the offer.
02:16I'm going to leave, you think about it, you think it's the first time I've ever made such an offer,
02:20so just have a word with Jamie, will you?
02:23Okay, I'll ask.
02:24And let me know. Let me know. And while you're doing that, we've got our champ back again. How many
02:29times is this?
02:30Er, this is number five.
02:31Yeah, going for the season ticket. Well done. Name on the back of the chair.
02:34And you're joined by Robert Coyne from Motherwell in Scotland, a stockroom manager who supports both Celtic and Arsenal.
02:42Yeah.
02:43When they clash, where do your loyalties lie?
02:47Er, Celtic, definitely.
02:48Yeah?
02:49Mm-hmm.
02:49Okay. Home team?
02:51Eh, well, nah, this team I've grew up. The Arsenal's more like I can result a bit with my dad.
02:56Good luck to you. Anyway, welcome to our contestants, our champ and Robert.
03:05And being put to the test, he said rather cleverly, in Dictionary Corner, let's welcome Susie Dent and the great
03:12cricketing legend that is Michael Vaughan.
03:14Welcome back.
03:17Hello, Susie.
03:18Hello.
03:18Are you well?
03:19Very well, thank you.
03:20Excellent. And Michael?
03:21Afternoon.
03:22Have you got a love of things mechanical?
03:23Er, certainly not into tractors in any way, shape or form.
03:27Er, indoor helicopter.
03:29Oh really?
03:29Yeah, that's what I've got.
03:30And you can fly that round the room without wrecking the...
03:33Well, it's only had one, one kind of expedition at the minute, it broke, I smashed it into the wall.
03:38Well done. Well done. You weren't in it.
03:40I'm getting better though.
03:42Well, how big is this thing?
03:43It's only small.
03:44They're clever, aren't they?
03:45Yes.
03:46Yeah? Do you think you get the hang of it?
03:48Er, I hope so, because it's going to be very expensive, because I've got to replace the one that I've
03:52broken.
03:52Exactly.
03:53And all those light fittings.
03:54Anyway, we're going to kick off, Mark, with you.

10:50and four and a large one's one hundred and seventy-five and the first target of
10:56the day two hundred and five two oh five
10:59yeah
11:12yeah
11:13yeah
11:30so mark at 205 205 yep 205 all right 205 mark off you go okay i have six minus four
11:38is two six
11:39minus four for two times by a hundred yeah then it's easier 200 plus five 205 well done
11:46robert a 100 plus 75 175 six teams five is 30 add them together well done again 205
11:57very good well done and that takes um you to 29 robert against marks 24 and we now look towards
12:07uh michael vaughan and michael i was reading that um back in those yorkshire cricket days
12:12the discipline was tremendous and you had to really turn out very well and shave every morning
12:16and so forth and that presumably is why you're looking so immaculate today discipline was a big
12:21deal and turning up on time yeah that was always installed at yorkshire from an early age that you
12:27had to be smart uh on time i wouldn't say that i abided by those rules all the time throughout
12:32my
12:32career to be honest particularly in the early days it was more of a a hobby cricket and everywhere we
12:38used to travel it was more about the activities at night when we were kids rather than the actual
12:44playing side so the afternoon in the field it was more about asking the opposition and the umpires who
12:49were around that region where the best bars were unfortunately and it really started to become a
12:53professional until i was about 23 and i played for him when i was 25 i would have done it
12:57earlier maybe
12:58i've achieved a little bit more earlier as well listen you didn't do bad did you i did okay yeah
13:04but we need a bit more discipline around here people turn up late i mean look at rachel always
13:09late look at the state of her so i want you to have a word with her later on about
13:13that sort of thing
13:15i read that really your career was foreshortened because of knee problems but you're a batsman
13:23why the batsmen get badly it's always just you uh just me um i i just had a chronic knee
13:28problem
13:29which was with me all my career i had to have lots of injections and uh the game became a
13:34lot faster
13:34and a lot more agile i think anyone that saw me field would realize that i dropped a number of
13:39balls
13:40down to the fact that i couldn't move and very much my hands would shuffle around and the younger guys
13:45were coming through and it's uh all sports now very fast and you need to be very agile fit strong
13:50um and i just wasn't in those last few years so it's time for the youngsters to come through
13:55and i think that you know one of the great heroes of that uh that series was freddy flintoff and
14:02i
14:02think his knees and and uh generally you know fast bowlers take a hammering don't they yes i mean
14:09freddy had bad knees he had uh bad backs bad ankles uh bad hips uh bad arms you name it
14:17freddy had
14:17something wrong with his body uh it was difficult to manage at times i must admit but the best way
14:22to manage him and unfortunately you have to go with him you have to abide by him and we talked
14:28about discipline and times but spending every evening in the bar till 4am took its toll on me
14:33eventually i bet it did because you're a great golfer i had a golf lesson one i wouldn't say great
14:38come on i think you're pretty good i had a golf lesson once the golf pro said no he said
14:43you'll be
14:43no good you've got stagnant hips i thought it was a bit of an extraordinary thing to say anyway
14:48it's a tea time teaser which is many ride and the clue many of them ride around on floats
15:12welcome back and the clue to the tea time teaser was many of them ride around on floats
15:20and the answer is dairyman dairyman so on with the game with uh mark at 24 and robert at 29

22:52a late 18th century uh term for a machine that made counterfeit money and corollary it comes from
22:59the latin corollarium which was money paid for a garland or a chaplet to be worn and it was um
23:04used or paid for by romans who used to wear these garlands at festivals and weddings and so would pay

34:52because I'm bringing a photograph to show you, so that you can send that to Jamie, and
34:57between you, you can make the right decision.
34:59So, on the day, I was planning on wearing high heels.
35:01I don't know, have you had much practice climbing into the tractor in high heels?
35:05I can quite honestly answer that by saying no.
35:09Okay.
35:09We're going to have to test that out.
35:11But I'll try it for you, and I'll report back.
