Interview with Austin Butler and Zoe Kravitz
Transcript
00:00You're an amazing person.
00:00Is that what you call me when I'm not around?
00:03Zoe is an amazing person.
00:10I love this movie. It's crazy.
00:12It's crazy.
00:13Yeah, when did you watch it?
00:14I watched it Thursday in the middle of the day.
00:16Look at us. Cheers.
00:17Look at us.
00:17Wow, we got the same color.
00:18Oh my God, we're basically matching.
00:20Look at us, girl.
00:21But I watched it in the middle of the day on Thursday,
00:22and I had never felt so much anxiety in recent memory watching a movie.
00:26But like in a good way, you know, when you're just like on the edge of your seat the whole
00:28time?
00:28Yeah, great.
00:29Which I just want to compliment you because I think Blink twice just does this great job also building and
00:33sustaining.
00:34Thank you so much.
00:36But I want to talk about before we get into just like sheer chaos in this movie,
00:40we do get a couple of fun moments between your characters.
00:43I want to talk about the strip down.
00:44Were you guys actually racing?
00:46Who won?
00:47I feel like it was genuinely competitive.
00:49It was very competitive.
00:51I also was holding a beer and I had a hat.
00:53Oh my God.
00:54I had a cigarette and I had a lit cigarette.
00:58You're splitting hairs here.
00:59Shirt over the head.
01:00Yeah, that was pretty impressive.
01:01Did you keep it in your mouth?
01:02How'd you do that?
01:03Yes.
01:04You kept it in your mouth?
01:05Yes, doggy.
01:06Yes.
01:07Wow, that's impressive.
01:08And still managed to win.
01:09Very impressive.
01:10To win.
01:11She didn't win all the time.
01:12I sort of let her win on the...
01:14It was, well it was, no it wasn't scripted who won.
01:16Was it not scripted that way?
01:18I don't think it said who won.
01:19I don't know.
01:19It was a genuine, yeah.
01:20Yeah, but it was a competition as you can see.
01:22I gathered that.
01:23Because we're still debating about it.
01:25I want to know if I can take this seriously.
01:28What do you need to take us seriously?
01:30At one point I wrote down, why is she with him?
01:34Right.
01:35Did you also...
01:35Story of my life, yeah.
01:37Those thoughts.
01:37Yeah.
01:38I mean, I feel like she definitely maybe likes to fix and take care of people.
01:44She's an EMT, so I feel like there's a certain amount of care that she likes to give.
01:50He cute.
01:52He funny.
01:53You know?
01:55And I feel like she's such a New Yorker.
01:58She's so tough that I think there might be something refreshing about him to her.
02:04Yeah.
02:04Yeah.
02:05Did they have some fun?
02:06Yeah.
02:08I totally understand why you would ask that question.
02:10Yeah, I was like, I'm not crazy, right?
02:12Let's go back to your place and you can take advantage of my poor judgment.
02:15I depend on your poor judgment.
02:16I want to switch to this a little bit and just talk about Hank spends a lot of time being
02:20injured, but he has to, he's like forced to be so agile.
02:24Yeah.
02:24How did you approach like the physicality of that, of like, I've got to run so fast, but
02:28also this guy is like, has an open wound and how am I going to treat it?
02:31Yeah, that was a conundrum for me.
02:32Yeah.
02:33Because I talked to Darren a lot about it.
02:35Yeah.
02:35And there were times where I said, Darren, I really feel like I should be.
02:38And he goes, no, the adrenaline's pumping so much that you would just go and then you
02:42feel it afterward.
02:43And so there were moments.
02:45And so we played with a lot of different things.
02:47We did different takes.
02:48And then I just kind of trusted Darren to cut together what he felt was, felt right for
02:53the tone of the film.
02:54But yeah, I mean, when I'm cut open and then suddenly I have to be sprinting down the street.
02:58I had that thought.
03:00I was just talking to him actually, and I'll hold this for spoilers, so feel free to talk freely.
03:06But he mentioned that you had a connection to Laura Dern, which is kind of how she ended
03:11up playing your mom.
03:12Can you talk at all about that?
03:13Hey, Laura and I just, we met a few years ago, I think now.
03:18Maybe it was a few years ago, four years ago or something.
03:22And quickly developed this.
03:24I mean, you know Laura.
03:25She's just.
03:25I know Laura.
03:26She's the loveliest human being in the world.
03:28She's so maternal and comforting and smart.
03:32And so we would have conversations about life and the creative process.
03:38And she's just been this angel figure in my life.
03:41And on top of that, she, my mother used to always be told she looks like Laura Dern.
03:48Really?
03:49Yeah.
03:49So when anybody would talk, they would talk to my mom.
03:52They'd say, you know, you look just like Laura Dern.
03:55That's crazy.
03:56Isn't that wild?
03:56Yeah.
03:57So all these years later, I got to actually tell that to Laura.
04:00And now she's like this pseudo mom to me.
04:03Oh, that's so cute.
04:05That's really cool.
04:05Thank you for sharing that.
04:07I need you to take care of my cat.
04:08I like cats.
04:09I like dogs.
04:10Really quickly.
04:11Is it as hard to watch an injured cat actor as it is to be in the theater?
04:16I know, right?
04:17The pause.
04:17Yeah, yeah.
04:18Oh, it's so sad.
04:19It's so sad.
04:20Actually, I mean, more impressive though, the fact that the cat could pretend to be injured.
04:24I was like, this is amazing.
04:26Yeah.
04:26The cat is an amazing little actor.
04:27Yeah.
04:29Amazing little actor.
04:30You're an amazing little actor.
04:30Is that what you call me when I'm around?
04:33Zoe is an amazing actor.
04:35She's a good little actor.
04:39Can you guys give me what it's like to work with Darren Aronofsky in one word?
04:42Fun.
04:44Direct.
04:45Direct fun.
04:46Direct fun.
04:51No!
04:53No!
04:53No!
04:54No!
04:54No!
