00:00The Taliban has introduced a new penal code that allows husbands to physically punish their wives
00:05and children, unless the injuries are visible enough to count as serious. Even then, the
00:10punishment is just 15 days in jail. And here's the cruelest part. If a woman wants justice,
00:16she has to prove the abuse in court, fully covered and accompanied by a male guardian,
00:21often the same man who abused her. All of this is happening as the United Nations reports a 40%
00:26rise in violence against women since the Taliban took over in 2021. Right now, 14.2 million Afghan
00:33women need protection and humanitarian support. According to UN Women, 78% of young Afghan women
00:40are shut out of education, jobs and training. Afghanistan now ranks second worst in the world
00:45for gender inequality, only Yemen ranks lower. The UN has also documented rape and sexual violence
00:51by Taliban officials themselves.
