NGO uses recycled hair to help restore Mexico City's agricultural islands

For centuries, farmers in southern Mexico City have cultivated "chinampas," agricultural islands first developed in pre-Hispanic times and still in use today. But water contamination is an increasing concern for them. In these wetlands, environmental organization Matter of Trust Latam is testing human hair as a tool to reduce pollution and improve soil health. "Hair has an adhesive quality and the ability to capture certain contaminants," says Mattia Carenini, Global Hubs Director at Matter of Trust Latam.

00:01The Salones of Belleza
00:01The Salones of Belleza always have been catalogated as places where
00:15there is a waste of product, where it is ensued
00:18and thanks to God with the time this has changed
00:20and with this type of movements we can turn around.
00:24Instead of being someone who contaminated,
00:26we are being someone who helps the environment and the planet.
00:42Huele fuerte.
00:49The hair has an adherence
00:51and the ability to recover different contaminants
00:54like oil, grass, hydrocarburos,
00:57coliformes fecales,
00:58heavy metals, PFAS, PFOS,
01:00all kinds of contaminants
01:01which are due to the same structure of the hair.

01:19We are dedicated to agriculture,
01:24all kinds of horticulture,
01:25and all kinds of horticulture
01:26and we are seeing that our main problem is the water.
01:37The interesting thing here is that when they finish their cycle of absorption,
01:42we can treat them with bacteria.
01:44That allows the bacteria to feed these contaminants in two months,
01:50and we can re-use them again in water,
01:52or that the hair itself, which is inside the device,
01:56can be used as compost directly in the soil.
02:00The soil will be more humid,
02:02so it will not need the same amount of water that you applied before.
02:10It's for the helada.
02:12It's spérmico.
02:49See you next time!
