00:00What's up everyone and welcome back to the channel. Close your eyes for a second and listen. Key key key.
00:11Ma ma ma. If that sound doesn't send a little shiver down your spine.
00:16You must have been living under a rock since 1980. Today, we re-diving deep into the murky waters of
00:26Crystal Lake to uncover the complete history of one of Horror S' most iconic figures, Jason Voorhees and the Friday
00:35the 13th franchise.
00:37From a grieving mother's revenge to a seemingly unkillable machete-wielding force of nature, this story is a wild ride.
00:48So grab your popcorn, check that your doors are locked, and let's head back to camp.
00:54It all started in 1980. Director Sean S. Cunningham, inspired by the massive success of John Carpenter's Halloween, had a
01:06simple but brilliant idea. Create a slasher movie with a catchy title.
01:12He famously took out an ad in Variety for a film called Friday the 13th, before he even had a
01:20script. The gamble paid off. The story was simple. A group of camp counsellors trying to reopen the supposedly cursed
01:29Camp Crystal Lake are picked off one by one.
01:33But here's the twist that shocks everyone. The killer isn't some hulking monster. It's Pamela Voorhees, a grieving mother seeking
01:44revenge for the drowning of her young son, Jason, years earlier due to the negligence of distracted counsellors.
01:53In the film's final moments, our final girl, Alice, beheads Mrs. Voorhees, seemingly ending the nightmare. But then, in one
02:05of the greatest jump scares in cinema history, a decomposed Jason leaps from the lake to pull her under.
02:13Was it a dream? Was it a dream? Or a chilling premonition? That final scare set the stage for everything
02:21to come.
02:22Just one year later, in 1981, Friday the 13th, Part 2, arrived. This is where Jason truly begins his legacy.
02:34The film opens with Alice, the survivor from the first movie, trying to recover. But her peace is short-lived.
02:44A new killer, now revealed to be a fully grown Jason Voorhees, hunts her down and ends her life.
02:53He has apparently been living in the woods near Crystal Lake all this time. A feral hermit.
03:00This version of Jason isn't wearing his famous hockey mask yet. Instead, he wears a burlap sack over his head,
03:08with one eyehole cut out.
03:11A look that's both creepy and strangely pathetic. He's more human here. Running, stumbling, and showing vulnerability.
03:21But make no mistake, he's just as brutal as his mother. Dispatching a new group of counselors, who have dared
03:30to set up a training center, right next to his home.
03:34Part 2 established the formula. New kids, new kills, and Jason as the relentless hunter.
03:44Then came 1982's Friday the 13th, Part 3. And this is the big one. This is where Jason gets his
03:54signature look.
03:55The film was originally released in 3D, which explains all the shots of things flying toward the camera.
04:04Early in the movie, Jason kills a prankster character named Shelly and takes his hockey mask.
04:12The moment he puts it on, an icon is born.
04:16That blank, emotionless mask became the face of terror for a generation.
04:22It's simple, it's effective, and it's absolutely terrifying.
04:27From this point on, the hockey mask and Jason Voorhees are inseparable.
04:34The film continues the slasher formula, with Jason stalking a new group of unsuspecting teens at a nearby lakeside cabin.
04:45He's bigger, stronger, and feels less human than in the previous film.
04:51The ending sees our final girl, Chris, finally striking Jason in the head with an axe, seemingly killing him for
05:02good.
05:02But we all know that's not how this story goes.
05:06In 1984, they released Friday the 13th, the final chapter.
05:12As the title suggests, this was meant to be the end of Jason Voorhees' special effects guru, Tom Savini,
05:22who worked on the first film, returned specifically to kill the character he helped create.
05:28The story picks up right where part three left off.
05:33Jason's body is taken to the morgue, but of course, he's not dead.
05:38He awakens and begins his bloody trek back to Crystal Lake.
05:43This film introduces one of the franchise's most beloved characters,
05:49a young boy named Tommy Jarvis, played by Corey Feldman.
05:54Tommy is a horror movie fan and a whiz with masks and makeup.
06:00When Jason attacks his family, Tommy uses his skills to fight back.
06:06In the climax, he shaves his head to look like young Jason,
06:11confusing the killer long enough to gain the upper hand.
06:15In a fit of rage, Tommy brutally attacks Jason with a machete, hacking him to pieces.
06:22It was a definitive, gruesome end.
06:26Or so we thought.
06:28The box office success of the final chapter was too much to ignore.
06:33So, in 1985, we got Friday the 13th, a new beginning.
06:40Since Jason was supposedly dead and buried,
06:44the filmmakers tried something different.
06:47The story follows a now-teenage Tommy Jarvis,
06:52who is living in a rural halfway house, haunted by his past encounter.
06:58Soon, a series of brutal murders begins,
07:03and everyone, including Tommy, suspects that Jason has returned.
07:09The killer even wears the hockey mask,
07:13but in a controversial twist at the end.
07:16The killer is revealed to be a copycatter paramedic named Roy Burns,
07:24seeking revenge for the death of his son.
07:27Fans were not happy.
07:29They wanted Jason, not an imposter.
07:33The film ends with a traumatized Tommy putting on the hockey mask himself,
07:40hinting that he might become the new killer.
07:43The studio listened to the fan backlash.
07:47The copycat idea was scrapped.
07:50And for the sixth film, 1986's Friday the 13th, part 6,
07:57Jason lives.
07:58They knew they had to bring back the real deal.
08:02This movie completely revitalizes the franchise
08:06by leaning into the supernatural and adding a heavy dose of self-aware humor.
08:12An adult Tommy Jarvis, still tormented,
08:17goes to Jason's grave to dig him up and cremate him,
08:22hoping to end his nightmares for good.
08:25But in a Frankenstein-esque twist,
08:28a bolt of lightning strikes the metal fence post,
08:32Tommy impaled Jason with,
08:35and a reanimated, supernaturally powered Jason Voorhees is born.
08:40This is no longer a human killer.
08:43This is a zombie Jason,
08:46an unstoppable, undead killing machine.
08:50He's stronger, tougher, and now officially immortal.
08:54Jason Lives is a fan favorite for its fun tone,
08:59great kills,
09:00and for cementing Jason as a true supernatural monster.
09:05The next few films took Jason's supernatural status and ran with it.
09:12Friday the 13th, part 7,
09:15The New Blood in 1988,
09:17pitted Jason against a telekinetic teenager named Tina,
09:23essentially giving us Jason versus Carrie.
09:27It's a fun concept that leads to an epic final battle,
09:32with Tina using her powers to electrocute,
09:35burn, and even re-drown Jason.
09:39Then, in 1989,
09:41Friday the 13th, part 8,
09:44Jason takes Manhattan promise to take the terror to the Big Apple,
09:48while most of the movie famously takes place on a boat heading to New York.
09:54The finale does see Jason stalking through Times Square,
09:59which is an undeniably cool image.
10:01The ending is bizarre,
10:04with Jason being melted by a flood of toxic waste in the sewers.
10:09But by this point,
10:10the series was all about over-the-top spectacle.
10:15After a brief hiatus and a studio change,
10:19Jason returned in 1993 with Jason Goes to Hell,
10:24the final Friday.
10:25This film tried to add a bunch of new lore,
10:30suggesting Jason is a demonic entity,
10:34a body-hopping hell baby that can possess people.
10:38It's a weird one.
10:40Most of the movie doesn't even feature the classic Jason,
10:44as he switches from body to body.
10:47The most memorable part is the very end.
10:50After Jason is finally dragged to hell,
10:55Freddy Krueger's gloved hand bursts from the ground
10:59and pulls Jason's mask down with it,
11:03teasing a crossover that fans had dreamed of for years.
11:08It took another decade,
11:10but that dream finally came true in 2003
11:13with Freddy vs. Jason.
11:16This blockbuster event saw the two horror titans
11:20clash in a massive battle.
11:23The story involves Freddy resurrecting Jason
11:27to create fear on Elm Street,
11:30but he loses control of the unkillable brute.
11:33It's a fanservice masterpiece,
11:36delivering on the promised carnage
11:39and giving us a bloody, epic showdown at Crystal Lake.
11:44The ending is ambiguous,
11:46with Jason emerging from the water,
11:49holding Freddy's severed head,
11:52which then winks at the camera,
11:54leaving the question of who truly won up for debate.
11:59The franchise's last solo outing,
12:02for now,
12:03was the 2009 reboot,
12:06simply titled Friday the 13th.
12:09Produced by Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes,
12:12this film aimed to create a new, modern timeline.
12:17It essentially combined the plots
12:20of the first three films into one.
12:23We see a glimpse of Mrs. Voorhees,
12:26Jason, wearing the sack,
12:28and then him finding his iconic hockey mask.
12:31This Jason is different.
12:33He's not a zombie.
12:35He's a cunning, territorial survivalist.
12:39He's fast, smart, and sets traps.
12:43He's arguably the most terrifying
12:46and physically imposing version of the character.
12:50While the film was a financial success,
12:53legal disputes over the franchise rights
12:56have stalled any sequels for over a decade.
13:00And that brings us to today.
13:03The legend of Jason Voorhees
13:06is more than just a series of movies.
13:10It's a cultural phenomenon.
13:12From a boy who drowned in a lake
13:15to a mother's revenge,
13:17a backwards killer,
13:19a supernatural zombie,
13:21and even a futuristic cyborg in Jason X,
13:25his story has evolved in wild and unforgettable ways.
13:31That emotionless hockey mask
13:33has become a symbol of relentless terror.
13:36A promise that no matter how many times
13:39you put him down,
13:40he will always come back.
