Closer to home, residents across the ACT’s western border are being warned of looming water restrictions with the hot, dry summer taking a toll on water reserves. The Yass Valley Council has flagged 'level one' restrictions could be in force as soon as the end of this week with more on the horizon, if rainfall doesn't improve.

00:03A dry summer and a recent drought, has Yass Valley Council warning water restrictions
00:08are imminent?
00:10We have had water evaporate quite rapidly from the dam around 15mm a day and so we're
00:16around about 70cm below the dam wall right now.
00:20Level 1 restrictions kick in when the dam is at 81% capacity.
00:25Current water levels are getting close to that, now at 83%.
00:31Authorities hope this year might bring more rain.
00:34Even if the dam was full at capacity, it only supplies nine months of water so we rely
00:41on those constant top ups.
00:43Despite similar weather conditions, water reserves in Canberra are at healthier levels.
00:48In the short term, water restrictions do not look like they're on the cards for the ACT
00:53but we don't want anyone to become complacent in terms of how they use water because it
00:58is a precious resource.
00:59With hot and dry weather forecast for Yass in the coming weeks, the Yass Valley Council
01:05is predicting stage one water restrictions could kick in as early as this Friday.
01:11Those restrictions will limit water used for non-essential outdoor activities such as hosing
01:16down paved surfaces or washing cars more than once a week.
01:20Many residents are resigned to the necessity of restrictions.
01:24Restrictions are very inconvenient, but obviously, you know, if they're a necessary measure if
01:31we're going to run out of water, we don't definitely want to run out of water.
01:34I actually thought it was going to come in earlier than that, to be honest.
01:37I actually thought, well, you know, it should be here now.
