Tunisia jails five over deadly 2023 Djerba synagogue attack

Tunisian courts have sentenced five defendants to prison terms of up to 15 years for their roles in the deadly May 2023 attack on the Ghriba synagogue in Djerba that killed five people, a lawyer confirmed Monday.

00:00Tunisian courts have handed down prison sentences of up to 15 years to five defendants linked to the deadly May
00:082023 attack on the Gribah synagogue on the island of Jeba, one of the lawyers confirmed to AFP on Monday.
00:17The attack, carried out by a National Guard officer, left five people dead, including three of his colleagues and two
00:26Jewish worshippers. The asylum was killed during the assault.
00:30Lawyer Nizar Ayed, representing several victims, said the attacker acted as a lone wolf. A student and their asylum's fiancée,
00:42prosecuted for complicity in homicide and membership in a terrorist group, received three and eight years respectively.
00:51Two other defendants were sentenced to seven and fifteen years, the heavier penalty for fleeing justice.
00:59The attacker's sister out on bail received a one-year sentence. Defense lawyers say they will appeal.
