Brazil carnival gets messy as revelers dive into mud

Revelers gathered in the city of Curuca in northern Brazil on Sunday for the 37th edition of the Pretinhos do Mangue Ecological Carnival Block, where participants coated themselves in thick, dark mangrove mud. This year's event, held under the theme of women's roles in society and the community's relationship with its ecosystem, highlighted the socio-environmental ties between locals and the region's mangroves. Minister of Cities Jader Filho, also covered in mud, praised the festival's ecological focus and urged participants to refrain from crab fishing during the species' mating season to protect local biodiversity.
