Raquel Laguna/ SUCOPRESS. Actress Jeanine Mason stars as the lead antagonist in the new season of the crime-thriller CROSS, now on Prime Video. In this interview, Jeanine talks about Luz, her character, and about what she has learned working in the series. In Season 2, Jeanine delivers one of her most complex performances yet as Luz, a powerful vigilante who embarks on a calculated mission of justice for exploited agricultural farmworkers in her mother’s hometown in Mexico. Her storyline dives deep into themes of human labor exploitation and the moral cost of justice. CROSS is a complex, twisted, pulse-pounding thriller starring and executive produced by Aldis Hodge and created by executive producer, showrunner, and writer Ben Watkins, based upon the characters from James Patterson’s best-selling Alex Cross book series. Starring Aldis Hodge, Cross season two follows “Alex Cross,” the decorated D.C. homicide detective and forensic psychologist whose current mission involves chasing a murderous vigilante stalking an agri-business billionaire. “Alex Cross” is uniquely capable of digging into the psyches of killers and their victims, in order to identify—and ultimately capture—the murderers. The series is headlined by an ensemble cast including Hodge, Isaiah Mustafa as “John Sampson,” Alona Tal as “Kayla Craig,” Jeanine Mason as “Luz,” Wes Chatham as “Donnie,” Matthew Lillard as “Lance Durand,” Samantha Walkes as “Elle Monteiro,” Jennifer Wigmore as “Chief Anderson,” Johnny Ray Gill as “Bobby Trey,” and Sharon Taylor as “Lt. Oracene Massey." Portraying “Alex Cross’” family are Juanita Jennings as “Nana Mama”, Melody Hurd as “Janelle” and Caleb Elijah as “Damon.” The series is based on the characters written by best-selling author James Patterson, created by showrunner and writer Ben Watkins.

00:00How would you describe Luz as a character, and what makes her such a compelling character in this new season?
00:12I would certainly, you know, describe her as the antagonist, but she is very much an unusual antagonist in that
00:21she is walking this very thin line of, you know, is she a vigilante or is she a villain?
00:27And the showrunner Ben Watkins and the writers and the team behind the show decided this year we would pose
00:33the question, you know, what does it mean to be a monster?
00:36And they really tasked me with getting to be this, you know, awful stone cold killer, but also someone that
00:45the audience would hopefully fall in love with.
00:48So I just got really lucky. I got to work on a character that is really maybe, in my eyes
00:55at least, justified in the reasons, in the ways in which, or in her motivations for doing the things she's
01:02doing, but certainly doing them in ways that are very violent.
01:07What drew you to this role?
01:10You know, what drew me was this challenge, like getting to play in that, like such fertile grounds like that.
01:18And, you know, it also really, it mattered to me to get to be a part of something that really,
01:25you know, represents Latinos in a way I don't often see, especially Latinas represented on TV and in media.
01:37And also that just is like ultimately a conversation starter on community and looking out for each other and being,
01:46being a good neighbor, you know, this woman is driven to do what she's doing because she feels as if
01:53her people are being ignored by the system.
01:56And so she decides she's going to be the one to rectify that.
02:00What did you discover about Luth that surprised you while bringing her to life?
02:08Oof, you know, gosh, you know, it surprised me how easy it was for me to understand why she did
02:18the things that she does, you know, why she does the things she does.
02:22I think like when you're tasked with playing a baddie, a villain, you think that's going to be a jump.
02:30But no, it wasn't. It was it was really easy.
02:32And it surprised me, too, how much like strength and inspiration it gave me to be more of a vocal
02:38advocate for for my community and my people.
02:41And and and I'm so grateful to that.
02:44And what have you learned working on a TV show like this?
02:48Oh, man, that I can that I can get really good at playing with a knife in a very short
02:57amount of time.
02:59If it's what I do obsessively 24 seven there with my little cuchillo, you know, it was a real challenge
03:07to to to attempt to be as good at all the various skills she utilizes throughout the season to get
03:15her to her many marks.
03:16So that was so fun. Oh, and and then I look good in a lot of more hair colors than
03:22I knew.
03:22Like, I feel like I could pull off the peli roja, the the the red the red headed wig.
03:29What's next for you?
03:31Oh, man, you know, I'm working on a project right now that I'm really excited about.
03:36And I have a baby boy.
03:40I just became a mother.
03:42I have a four month old.
03:43So I have some some big new projects, both personally and in work this year.
03:51And mostly, though, I'm just like so excited for for this to come out.
03:55And and I just hope everyone will show up and enjoy it and enjoy seeing us represented on on a
04:02show that is just got so many eyes on it as one gets on prime video.
04:07So, you know.
