Transcript
00:00Are you, I, I, I, you, I can't wait to hear your speech.
00:06Welcome to Miss Mojo, and today we'll be counting down our picks for those romantic comedies that still tickle our collective funny bone.
00:13You are beguiling.
00:16Did you just learn that word? Because you tend to say it a lot.
00:20Number 30, Set It Up.
00:22This film from 2018 is just one rom-com that can be credited with widening the creative net for that genre's perspective and points of view.
00:31Alright.
00:31Oh my god.
00:32What?
00:33Stop. Keep the top up, otherwise the cheese will slide off.
00:37Please don't drop my pizza.
00:38What? Just stop making me laugh.
00:41I'm serious.
00:42Stop making me laugh.
00:43I'm not trying to.
00:44Stop.
00:44I mean it, okay?
00:46It is in my possession. I got this.
00:48The fact that Set It Up was both written and directed by women isn't lost on us, nor is the fact that it wound up being satisfyingly engaging and funny.
00:57Granted, the plot does work around established genre conventions and story beats, but it does so in a manner that's charming enough that we don't really care.
01:06Glenn Powell and Zoe Deutsch are great leads that throughout the course of trying to set up their bosses wind up falling in love themselves, and we feel great rooting for them the whole way.
01:16You are.
01:18I'm unbelievably bad at beer pop.
01:20You're a sore winner.
01:22And you used too many exclamation points.
01:28And yet?
01:31Number 29.
01:32Trainwreck
01:33Comedian Amy Schumer couldn't have crafted a better starring vehicle for herself than 2015's Trainwreck.
01:39Her script is uproariously funny and frequently outrageous, yet never forgets to come back around to the beating heart that lurks at the center of all good rom-coms.
01:49This film boasts reliably strong direction from Judd Apatow, who co-produced, while Schumer's leading man Bill Hader is a fantastic foil.
02:04Oh, and there were also those infamous supporting roles from folks like LeBron James and the WWE's John Cena that got a lot of people talking about just how good Trainwreck was then and now.
02:16And I'll develop a CrossFit program and patent it, and I'll rule the CrossFit world.
02:22With you by my side, you can be my CrossFit queen.
02:26Number 28.
02:28There's Something About Mary
02:29The mark of a good rom-com often straddles a creative line between emotionally resonant storytelling and shareable set pieces that often wind up going viral online.
02:40There's Something About Mary didn't exactly arrive during the prime internet era, and that meant stories of its outrageousness were spread the old-fashioned way via word of mouth.
02:50We're speaking, of course, about that hair gel scene, but it would be reductive to boil down There's Something About Mary only to this clip.
02:58I'm tired of talking about stalkers.
03:00Let's talk about you.
03:02Are you okay?
03:04Yeah?
03:04Do you want some water?
03:06No, I'm good.
03:07The film's gross-out factor never takes the lead over its boy-wants-girls scenario, but instead achieves that aforementioned balancing act with total confidence.
03:16It winds up feeling similar to another Ben Stiller Vehicle, 2004's Along Came Polly.
03:22Since we've been together, I've felt more uncomfortable, out of place, embarrassed, and just physically sick than I have in my entire life.
03:30But I couldn't have gone through all that.
03:32I couldn't have thrown up 19 times in 48 days if I wasn't in love with you.
03:38Number 27.
03:40Easy A
03:41Here's a question.
03:42Does it really matter that 2010's Easy A was a modern-day take on Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic 1815 novel, The Scarlet Letter?
03:50Not really, but it also shouldn't come as any surprise, since so many vintage tales have served as wonderful sources of contemporary inspiration.
03:58Isn't that always the way?
04:00The books you read in class always seem to have some strong connection with whatever angsty adolescent drama is going on.
04:06This goes double when the end results are as funny and as clever as Easy A, which hinges upon a great lead performance from Emma Stone.
04:14The tried-and-true trope of a little lie growing into a very big problem works great here, as Easy A navigates love, shame, and sexual politics in a manner that still makes for a great viewing today.
04:26You think I'm cool?
04:28I do, and I think you're pretty and smart.
04:33Well, did you form a spinu prior to my little transformation?
04:35Way prior.
04:37Wow.
04:38Why did that rumor spread?
04:40Number 26.
04:41Just Go With It
04:43The filmography of Adam Sandler tends to fall within a number of predictable categories, from those reliably goofy vehicles to some surprisingly serious deep-dive character pieces.
04:54You don't think it's crazy?
05:00Um, Danny, you don't need my permission.
05:05Okay, you're a big boy.
05:07Just Go With It arrived after Punch Drunk Love, but before Uncut Gems, and sees Sandler delivering one of those tried-and-true rom-com performances that's made his personality so relatable over the years.
05:19Well, the sprawling and elaborate lies of his protagonist here may not be exactly relatable to us, but that's also part of the fun of watching Sandler work.
05:28His everyman charm makes even his most flawed protagonists engaging and easy to follow.
05:33Aww, that's nice.
05:36It's nice to tell the truth.
05:38That's good.
05:39The truth is fun, isn't it?
05:40Like, were you telling the truth and you said you might be in love with me?
05:43Number 25.
05:45Always Be My Maybe
05:46This is another film that's indicative of growing representation at the Cineplex,
05:50and across-the-board reality that's become a part of basically every genre, including rom-coms.
05:56You're right.
05:58This is good.
06:01This place hasn't changed one bit either.
06:02Those women are still so rude and disappointed that neither of us speak Cantonese.
06:08Hello.
06:09Le ho ma.
06:10See you there.
06:11Hello.
06:13I learned.
06:16Better service.
06:17Always Be My Maybe was notable for how it took stories of the Asian-American experience,
06:22but didn't treat them as a selling point or with any sort of feelings of exploitation.
06:27Instead, the script from comedian Ali Wong and her collaborators feels natural, as it details
06:33the relationship between two adults who were once teenage sweethearts.
06:36Meanwhile, the direction of Nanachka Khan also does these characters well, inviting everybody
06:42to this tale of reconnection after a significant absence.
06:45Sasha Tran, can I hold your purse for you?
06:49That was the bad version?
06:55It was good.
06:58It was great.
06:58You liked it?
06:59I loved it.
07:00Kiss already!
07:01Number 24.
07:02Tootsie
07:03There was an embarrassment of riches behind the production of Tootsie from director Sidney
07:07Pollack to co-screenwriter Larry Gilbart.
07:10And this isn't even mentioning the cast, all of whom bring this tale of a difficult actor
07:15who takes on a new female persona in order to land a role on a soap opera.
07:20Mom?
07:24What do you think?
07:25Hurry.
07:26I'm late.
07:28Turn around.
07:31Smile.
07:33Say something.
07:34How do you do, Jeff?
07:35It's nice to meet you.
07:36You look very nice.
07:37Dustin Hoffman, Jessica Lange, Terry Garr, Bill Murray, and more bring their A-games to
07:43this all-time American classic.
07:45But the reality is that Tootsie could have very easily gone south.
07:49Thankfully, the film embodies so much of what's right about old-school cinema and very
07:54little of the often problematic attitudes towards gender and sexual politics.
07:59What can we say?
08:00Tootsie is as good as everybody says it is.
08:02I think Dorothy's smarter than I am.
08:05I just wish I looked prettier, you know?
08:07I look in the mirror and maybe I can just get a softer hair or something.
08:12Because she deserves it.
08:1423.
08:15Bridget Jones' Diary
08:17It was the rom-com that spawned a franchise, an adaptation of a 1996 novel that had more
08:22than a little story assistance from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.
08:26It's the truth universally acknowledged that the moment one area of your life starts going
08:31okay, another part of it falls spectacularly to pieces.
08:36The historical origins of Bridget Jones' Diary wouldn't matter at all had this film not been
08:41a hit, however, with all the flowers being laid at the feet of Renee Zellweger and helping
08:46make that a reality.
08:47Oh, and let's not forget her two leading men, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant, who both assist
08:52in making Bridget Jones' Diary charming AF.
08:55And sure, not everybody reads this film in the same way through modern eyes, but the body-positive,
09:01self-love aspects of Bridget Jones should still be applauded and enjoyed for what they achieved
09:06back in the day.
09:07I like you.
09:09Very much.
09:10Apart from the smoking and the drinking and the vulgar mother and the verbal diarrhea.
09:16No, I like you very much.
09:18Just as you are.
09:2022.
09:21The Princess Bride
09:23Rob Reiner's The Princess Bride can be described in a number of different ways, since it's
09:28so many things to so many different people.
09:30Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles.
09:40Doesn't sound too bad.
09:42Is the film an adventure?
09:43Certainly.
09:44A comedy?
09:45Frequently.
09:46But it's also ridiculously romantic, with a believable love story at its core that very
09:51much feels ripped from fairy tale lore.
09:54And why not?
09:55Everybody needs a little make-believe in their life, even young Fred Savage, who was initially
10:00so resistant to his grandfather reading him a kissing book.
10:03By the end, however, everybody is on board with this tale of intrigue, revenge, and most
10:08of all, storybook love.
10:10No, it's kissing again.
10:11You don't want to hear that.
10:12I don't mind so much.
10:17Okay.
10:21Since the invention of the kiss, there have been five kisses that were rated the most passionate,
10:26the most pure.
10:28This one left them all behind.
10:3021.
10:31Annie Hall
10:33The reputation of writer-director Woody Allen may be a controversial one today, but this
10:38should take nothing away from what he and co-screenwriter Marshall Brickman achieved in
10:421977 with Annie Hall.
10:44Why did I turn off Alison Porchnick?
10:46She was beautiful, she was willing, she was real, intelligent.
10:50Is it the old Groucho Marx joke that I just don't want to belong to any club that would
10:55have someone like me for a member?
10:57The film has been lauded as one of Allen's true masterpieces, thanks largely to an epic
11:02performance from co-star Diane Keaton.
11:05The latter's work as the title character was a watershed moment for Keaton as an actress,
11:10showcasing both charm and timing, not to mention one killer wardrobe.
11:15You're a wonderful tennis player.
11:17You're the worst driver I've ever seen in my life.
11:20Any place, the worst.
11:21Europe, any place.
11:22Asia.
11:23Yeah.
11:24And I love what you're wearing.
11:25Oh, you do?
11:26Yeah.
11:27Oh, well, it's a, this is a, this ties a present from Grammy Hall.
11:30The frequent neuroses of Allen's Alvy Singer is detailed through both unique cinematic decisions
11:36as well as narrative choices, all the while never forgetting to remain memorably heartfelt.
11:42The end particularly hammers this home in classic quirky Woody Allen fashion.
11:47The doctor says, well, why don't you turn him in?
11:49And the guy says, I would, but I need the eggs.
11:52Number 20, 27 Dresses.
11:54You buzzed past me earlier.
11:55I saw you changing gowns.
11:57You were in two weddings in one night, weren't you?
11:59It's a little upsetting, don't you think?
12:01Well, they're both really, really good friends of mine.
12:03And their weddings happen to be on the same night.
12:05So what was I supposed to do?
12:06Always a bridesmaid, never a bride.
12:09In Jane's case, a whopping 27 times.
12:12Then she meets a cynical reporter named Kevin who covers wedding announcements even though
12:17he believes marriage is a sham.
12:19Sparks fly and hijinks ensue.
12:21The comedic chemistry between Katherine Heigl and James Marsden is undeniable, and the banter is practically non-stop.
12:40You know how this one is going to end from the beginning, but that doesn't make the ride any less entertaining.
12:46Of course, we're mainly jealous that 27 people consider Jane to be such a good friend.
12:51And how do you afford these weddings?
12:53I mean, the dresses and the airfares and the wine of the month clubs.
12:56Hey, people love that gift.
12:57And I'm a frequent member, so sometimes they throw in a free divorce demeanor.
13:0019.
13:01To All the Boys I've Loved Before
13:03Lara Jean writes love letters to her crushes, though she never intends to actually send them.
13:09As per the typical embarrassing chaos of rom-coms, they somehow end up in the mail.
13:14You look so lonely and I can tell Peter liked you and I didn't even want to do anything about it!
13:18So you just sent all five of them!
13:20I stopped five chances and a boyfriend was better on!
13:23This Netflix hit is full of flawed but genuinely lovable characters.
13:28Lara Jean's snarky best friend Christine, for example.
13:31Then there's her younger sister Kitty, who has impeccable comedic timing.
13:35Especially for a preteen.
13:37And my name, thanks for asking, is Katherine Song Covey.
13:40Kitty to my friends.
13:41You can call me Katherine.
13:43Yes ma'am.
13:44She's my sister.
13:46And of course Lara Jean herself, whose inner monologue is the perfect blend of wit and heartfelt sincerity.
13:52Although we wouldn't wish this crazy situation on anyone, it does make for some truly laugh-out-loud moments.
13:58Hey!
13:59Stop that!
14:00Two more laps for you, Covey!
14:0618.
14:07Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
14:09I want you to know I don't care about any of that stuff.
14:12Because I'm in lesbians with you.
14:15What?
14:16When the young bassist of Garage Man decides to woo delivery worker Ramona Flowers,
14:21he discovers he must first fight her seven wicked exes.
14:25Wait!
14:26We're fighting over Ramona?
14:27Didn't you get my email explaining the situation?
14:32I skimmed it.
14:34Mm-mm.
14:35You will pay for your influence!
14:38Based on a series of graphic novels, Scott Pilgrim leads heavily into its comic book origins for unique visuals.
14:45Still, the film manages not to take itself too seriously despite starring icons like Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, and Jason Swartzman.
14:56From the evil ex-fights reminiscent of video game boss battles to the almost constant jokes and snarky comments, it's truly an out-of-the-box rom-com.
15:05I think I needed this, whatever it is, so thank you.
15:12You're welcome.
15:1417.
15:15As Good As It Gets
15:16Melvin Udall is a successful novelist with a lot of baggage. Rude, misanthropic, and plagued by OCD, he's driven away nearly everyone in his life.
15:27Well, I work all the time. So never, never interrupt me, okay? Not if there's a fire. Not even if you hear the sound of a thud from my home and one week later, there's a smell coming from there that can only be a decaying human body.
15:44Melvin's constant verbal abuse of his artist neighbor Simon, not to mention pretty much everyone else around him, is so over the top, it's absurd. And we can't help but laugh.
15:54Only Carol, a waitress at his daily breakfast spot, can tolerate him. But Carol has problems of her own.
16:01If I went by your eyes, I'd say you were 50.
16:04If I went by your eyes, I'd say you were kind. So, so much for us.
16:09Jack Nicholson is at his most Jack Nicholson, and it's an utter delight. When Carol's patience and a little dog's love starts to rub off on Melvin, he finds himself changing in small but significant ways, and we find ourselves rooting for him.
16:24I got a real great compliment for you. And it's true.
16:29I'm so afraid you're about to say something awful.
16:32Don't be pessimistic. It's not your style.
16:3516. 10 Things I Hate About You
16:38Based on Shakespeare's play The Taming of the Shrew, this teen romcom takes place not in Padua, Italy, but in Padua Hills, Washington.
16:53High school sisters Kat and Bianca live under the thumb of their paranoid, overprotective father.
16:59While Kat has no interest in the immature boys at school, Bianca wants to date and go to parties like a normal teenager.
17:06What's normal? Those damn Dawson's River kids sleeping in each other's beds and whatnot?
17:12Danny, that is so numb.
17:14I've got news for you. I'm down. I've got the 411. And you are not going out and getting jiggy with some boy. I don't care how dope his ride is.
17:21The girls, their romantic pursuers, and their father constantly train one-liners.
17:26And the sarcasm flows magnificently, just as it does in the original play.
17:31We think the Bard would approve.
17:33Have you seen him?
17:34Who?
17:35William!
17:36He asked me to meet him here.
17:38Oh, Mandela, please tell me you haven't progressed to full-on hallucinations.
17:4215. Notting Hill
17:44Hugh Grant has charm coming out of his ears.
17:47It's no wonder he was the rom-com king in the 90s and 2000s.
17:51I'm very sorry about the surreal but nice comment. Disaster.
17:57That's okay. I thought the apricot and honey thing was the real low point.
18:02When humble bookstore owner Will crosses paths with a beautiful American movie star,
18:07he doesn't exactly sweep her off her feet.
18:10But his bumbling sweetness combined with his dry English wit make him irresistible.
18:15Despite all the complications in their way, the two can't bear to stay apart.
18:29Filled with a quirky cast of unique characters and absurd situations,
18:33this movie's particular brand of humor is both entertaining and heartwarming.
18:39Nice try, gorgeous, but you don't fool anyone.
18:43Pathetic effort to hog the ground.
18:4614. While You Were Sleeping
18:48Peter is the bright spot in Lucy's long, lonely days at the train station fair booth.
18:54My prince charming.
18:56Well, we've never actually spoken, but I know someday we will. I know it. I just know it.
19:04Despite being virtual strangers, when an attack by muggers puts him in a coma,
19:09a series of misunderstandings leads Lucy to pretend to be his fiancee.
19:13But it's Peter's brother Jack who ends up winning Lucy's heart.
19:17And then I leaned.
19:19Yeah.
19:20Okay. How did I lean when I leaned?
19:22How were you leaning?
19:23Yeah.
19:24It was a lot different than hugging.
19:25Hugging is very different.
19:26Hugging that involves arms and hands.
19:29And leaning is whole bodies moving in like this.
19:33This movie could have been just another generic romantic comedy,
19:37if not for Sandra Bullock's irresistible appeal.
19:40As the hapless Lucy, she manages to be both graceful and inept at the same time.
19:45As she struggles to keep up her ruse, it's no surprise that Peter's entire family falls for her.
19:51I need to ask you a question.
19:53Get down on your knee. It's more romantic.
19:57He's proposing let him do it.
20:00I am letting him do it.
20:02Number 13. Crazy Stupid Love
20:05The last person in the world that I don't want to hurt is you, Cal.
20:08If you keep talking, I'm going to get out of the car.
20:10But I think the fact that I did it, it just shows how broken we are.
20:13How much, how much we really need Cal!
20:16Oh my God, Cal!
20:18Cal is middle-aged, recently divorced, and kind of pathetic.
20:23Jacob, on the other hand, is young, stylish, and very successful with the ladies.
20:28Do you find me attractive?
20:30She does.
20:31I don't.
20:32You do? She does?
20:33Yes, she does.
20:34I don't.
20:35You do?
20:36You don't.
20:37When Jacob decides to help Cal turn his life around, they both go through some unexpected romantic highs and lows.
20:43Although Steve Carell is the better known comedic actor, Ryan Gosling holds his own alongside the veteran
20:50and proves that he too is no slouch when it comes to humor.
20:53And who doesn't love a classic makeover montage, especially when the jokes come as fast as the outfit changes?
21:00Be better than the Gap.
21:01Be better than the Gap.
21:02Be better than the Gap.
21:03Say it.
21:04I'm better than the Gap.
21:05Say it.
21:06Say it.
21:07I'm better than the Gap.
21:12Number 12, The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
21:14At this point, we'll watch anything with Steve Carell in it.
21:17He stars as the titular virgin Andy, whose co-workers team up to help him overcome his virgin status.
21:23As is the case in many director Judd Apatow's films, much of the dialogue in this movie was improvised, giving this cast of brilliant entertainers plenty of opportunities to flex just how truly hilarious and quick-witted they are.
21:45Still, there is one scene where Carell isn't acting.
21:57The waxing scene is 100% real, and it really makes the whole thing that much better.
22:03Alright, everybody hold up heart hands for Steve Carell.
22:10Number 11, Groundhog Day.
22:14Imagine having an infinite number of chances to change your life and win over the person you love.
22:32After a while, you might get pretty creative.
22:35The original Groundhog Day puts an ingenious spin on the genre, trapping the protagonist in a time loop that repeats every 24 hours.
22:43From teaching himself ice sculpture to kidnapping the Puxatawney Groundhog, Phil tries everything to pass the time and eventually to break out of his metaphysical prison.
23:02Combine this crazy situation with Bill Murray's impeccable delivery, and you get a rom-com that turns even the darkest situations into hilarity.
23:11I am an immortal.
23:13Special today is blueberry waffles.
23:16Why are you telling me this?
23:18Because I want you to believe in me.
23:20Number 10, When Harry Met Sally.
23:22You realize, of course, that we can never be friends.
23:25Why not?
23:26What I'm saying is, and this is not a come on in any way, shape or form, is that men and women can't be friends because the sex part always gets in the way.
23:35When Harry Met Sally is considered to be one of the greatest romantic comedies of all time, popularizing the genre after it was released in 1989.
23:44It is, of course, known for the famous scene that takes place in Katz's deli where Sally delivers a very enthusiastic performance to prove a point.
23:54While Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are both excellent in their leading roles, Carrie Fisher adds great comic relief as Sally's best friend Marie.
24:17The film is also peppered with interviews of elderly couples telling their love stories, each of which is funnier than the last.
24:25What did I say?
24:26You said, what are you doing after?
24:28Right.
24:29So I ditched Roberta, we go for coffee, a month later we're married.
24:3335 years today after our first marriage.
24:36Number 9, Just Friends.
24:38In romantic comedies and teen movies, it's typically the girls who have the dramatic makeover, but that trope gets gender swapped in Just Friends.
24:47In this story, Ryan Reynolds stars as Chris, a guy who was overweight and nerdy in high school.
24:53When he comes back to his hometown as an adult, however, he's become both successful and incredibly good looking.
25:00You look so great, look at this body, you're like a new man.
25:04Yeah.
25:05So naturally, he sets out to win the girl of his teenage dreams.
25:08The movie is full of over the top gags and laugh out loud moments.
25:12Wow, you don't see that every day.
25:14At its heart, it also features a sweet love story between two former besties who finally managed to make it work after years apart.
25:22I don't want to tell you how beautiful I think you are, inside and out.
25:26And I want to have babies with you.
25:29And I want to marry you and I love you.
25:32Jamie, I always have.
25:35Number 8, Moonstruck.
25:37Today, it's kind of hard to picture Nicolas Cage as the star of a romantic comedy.
25:42And perhaps equally hard to imagine Cher starring opposite him.
25:46Would you like to go someplace so we could talk?
25:48I have no life.
25:49Excuse me?
25:50I have no life.
25:53My brother Johnny took my life from me.
25:56I don't understand you.
25:59But that's exactly the unlikely combination that 1987's Moonstruck gave us.
26:04Cher even won an Oscar for the role.
26:07I'm in love with you.
26:12Snap out of it!
26:13The movie is something of a cult favorite because of the way it balances offbeat comedy
26:18and an engaging story that takes us into the world of a group of quirky Italian Americans living in Brooklyn.
26:25He got hit by a bus.
26:26No.
26:27Bad luck.
26:28Your mother and I were married 52 years.
26:29Nobody died.
26:30You were married what?
26:31Two years?
26:32Somebody's dead.
26:33Don't get married again, Loretta.
26:34Rom-coms aren't known for being hits with the critics, but this one holds a Rotten Tomatoes score of 94%.
26:407.
26:41Forgetting Sarah Marshall
26:43Technically, Forgetting Sarah Marshall is more of a breakup movie than a traditional rom-com, but don't worry, it totally has a happy ending.
26:51In fact, if you're going through a breakup yourself and need a good laugh, this movie might be the perfect thing to cure your heartbreak.
26:58Peter, you suck. Peter, you suck. Peter, you don't do anything of value.
27:05Jason Siegel plays a guy who has just been dumped and has to contend with the fact that his ex is now dating a famous rock star.
27:12Things only get worse for him when he heads to Hawaii to take a vacation and learns that both his ex and her new beau are at the same resort.
27:20She's here with some guy already and kind of messed up.
27:24Right?
27:25While getting over a broken heart is usually more devastating than comedic, this movie is able to poke fun at all of the awful things that happen to Siegel's character, making us able to laugh at our own breakups, too.
27:36Maybe it's good we got hurt like that, you know? I don't know about you, but it makes me feel impervious to pain.
27:44Yeah. Kind of like there's nothing left to be afraid of.
27:48Number 6. My Best Friend's Wedding
27:51My Best Friend's Wedding is a unique romantic comedy in that, spoiler alert, it doesn't have a happy ending.
27:57The misery, the exquisite tragedy, the Susan Hayward of it all.
28:02The plot revolves around Jules, played by Julia Roberts, a woman who suddenly realizes she's totally in love with her longtime best friend.
28:10Unfortunately, this revelation comes just before he's about to get married.
28:14Now I'm just scared, so I realize this comes at a very inopportune time, but I really have this gigantic favor to ask of you. Choose me. Marry me.
28:29This is a movie that's much more about the journey that the protagonist goes through than it is about a fairy tale happily ever after.
28:36Along the way, she makes plenty of mistakes, and each one creates increasingly funny scenarios as the plot moves along.
28:43The plot of Coming to America is funny from the start. Eddie Murphy plays a spoiled prince of the fictional African nation of Zamunda, who isn't super enthusiastic about his family's attempts to set him up in an arranged marriage.
29:04I want the woman to love me for who I am, not because of what I am.
29:09And who are you?
29:10I am a man who has never tied his own shoes before.
29:13Wrong. You are a prince who has never tied his shoes.
29:17Instead, he decides to head to the United States to find an independent wife on his own.
29:23It's a classic fish-out-of-water story that involves Murphy's character Akeem Jaffer learning a lot of hilarious lessons as he contends with American culture.
29:32America is great indeed. Imagine a country so free, one can throw glass on the streets.
29:38Fans of the original movie were thrilled when a sequel Coming to America was released in March of 2021.
29:44We are going back to America.
29:46Oh, hell no, your majesty.
29:50Number 4. The Wedding Singer
29:53This movie is universally beloved, and it is considered to be more of a classic comedy than a romance by big viewers, despite the fact that there's a love story at its core.
30:03In a way, The Wedding Singer is a traditional Adam Sandler movie, with the actor playing another variation of his signature goofy character.
30:11Do you have any experience?
30:13No, sir, I have no experience, but I'm a big fan of money. I like it. I use it.
30:18In this iteration, he's playing Robbie, a wedding singer who's engaged to the wrong woman and eventually falls for a waitress played by Drew Barrymore.
30:27I could be the man who grows old with you. I wanna cry with you.
30:39The film balances a sweet romance with some laugh out loud moments, making it a great date movie.
30:45My lie guy is Glenn. They're on this plane.
30:48No way!
30:49You guys gotta help me.
30:51Right!
30:52Yeah!
30:53Sandler and Barrymore do it again in 50 First Dates.
30:57Number 3. The Proposal
31:00Starring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock, The Proposal tells the story of Margaret, a woman who basically forces her assistant Andrew to get engaged to her so she can avoid being deported.
31:10I'm not gonna marry you. Sure you are. Because if you don't marry me, your dreams of touching the lives of millions with the written word are dead.
31:17In order to sell the story to the immigration authorities, she ends up accompanying him on a trip to visit his family in Alaska.
31:25This city girl is totally out of place in the more natural setting and has a hard time letting loose with Andrew's laid back relatives.
31:32I'm not getting on that boat.
31:34You'll have to. See you in a few days.
31:36You know I can't swim. Hence the boat.
31:40One of the film's highlights has to be Betty White playing Andrew's grandmother.
31:45A sweet-looking yet foul-mouthed lady who, in one memorably hilarious scene, has Bullock's character perform a ritualistic dance with her.
31:53Let me see you get low, you scared, you scared. Drop your ass to the floor, you scared, you scared. Let me see you get low, you scared, you scared. Drop your ass to the floor, you scared, you scared.
32:01Number 2. How to lose a guy in 10 days.
32:05This movie features a love story that develops from a series of lies, which makes it amusing to watch, even though it's not the healthiest start to a relationship.
32:14Kate Hudson plays a magazine writer who has to produce a piece about all of the terrible mistakes that women make in relationships that drive men away.
32:23It will be sort of a dating how-to in reverse.
32:28What not to do.
32:31Yeah.
32:32How to lose a guy in 10 days.
32:36Matthew McConaughey is a PR chief who sets out to prove that he can make a woman fall in love with him in a matter of days.
32:43While he's trying to attract her, she's trying to repel him.
32:47Oh, you are already falling in love with me.
32:50I'm gonna make you wish you were dead.
32:54The dynamic only gets funnier as the movie progresses, and she tries more and more outlandish ways to show the clingy and over-the-top ways some people behave in relationships.
33:04I love Vern.
33:08It's dead.
33:12No, honey, it's just sleeping.
33:14You let it die.

33:31Number 1. My Big Fat Greek Wedding
33:36My Big Fat Greek Wedding focuses on Tula, a shy and introverted Greek woman living in Chicago who has always done what's expected of her.
33:45Until she falls for a non-Greek guy.
33:47He doesn't eat meat.
33:48He doesn't eat meat.
33:50He don't eat no meat.
33:51No.
33:52He doesn't eat meat.
33:53What do you mean he don't eat no meat?
33:56Oh, that's okay.
33:57That's okay.
33:58I make lamb.
33:59This is one of those delightful movies that's oh so comforting to watch because nothing really bad happens.
34:09Sure, Ian has a bit of a tough time getting used to Tula's zany family, but the conflict is pretty minimal.
34:16Come on, lighten up, lighten up.
34:18I'll lighten up.
34:19I'll lighten you when I take out your kidneys.
34:22One more time, Ian.
34:25Hey, Angelo.
34:26Hey, Ian.
34:27We're gonna kill ya.
34:29Opa.
34:30What carries the movie is the utterly charming cast of characters who make us laugh all the way through,
34:36whether they're curing everything with Windex or getting personal with the in-laws.
34:41Inside the lump, he found teeth and a spinal column.
34:49Yes, inside the lump was my twin.
