00:00You tried to kill me! You even went after Jenny! You shot me! Three times!
00:05Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most disappointing, lacking, and or couldn't live up
00:12to the hype movies.
00:13Wait. You don't have to do this.
00:18Alright, maybe you do.
00:21Number 20. Megalopolis.
00:23When does an empire die? Does it collapse in one terrible moment? No. No. But there comes a time when
00:34its people no longer believe in it.
00:36With cinephiles hopeful, Francis Ford Coppola's visionary odyssey looked like it had potential. The final product became an unintentional comedy.
00:44Entitles me?
00:45Yes.
00:47Entitles me?
00:48Yes.
00:49Entitles me?
00:50Yes.
00:50You have no idea about me.
00:54Mixing sci-fi and ancient Rome, this idealistic film is too sincere for its own good.
01:00Adam Driver plays the architect hoping to bring together the city with his newest ideas.
01:04The hero must contend with the elite and government officials, with the odd ensemble delivering some strange performances.
01:11Brains, family, name, talent.
01:16It's injected the wrong way, but I share your passions.
01:18Creation.
01:18Many of the actors, from Dustin Hoffman to Aubrey Plaza, feel like they've signed up for different films.
01:24The script doesn't do them any favors either, packing in philosophy and diet Shakespeare.
01:29To be, or not to be, that is the question.
01:35Whether it is no blur in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune?
01:39At least the scenery and costumes look nice.
01:42Number 19. Gem and the Holograms.
01:44He would call me his diamond in the rough, or his gem.
01:50All right, so what I'm trying to do right now is fix this circuit.
01:54For those that remember the original show, they might have imagined something much better for a live-action film.
01:59Gem and the Holograms could have been a fun, cult classic with a sci-fi edge.
02:04Show's over, Synergy. What else you got?
02:13The result makes you wish for either better music, or a more otherworldly plot.
02:18As the hero's father leaves her a robot, the main cast must go on a scavenger hunt.
02:22Wasn't that the last piece?
02:23I thought it was, but it looks like there's room for one more, maybe?
02:27How are we supposed to find it without a map?
02:29I don't know. This doesn't make any sense.
02:31This part of the story could have been compelling, or even heartwarming given the connection to Jerrica's dad.
02:35Director John M. Chu shuffles through various concepts, but this adaptation feels more like a Disney Channel original movie.
02:41Not even Juliette Lewis or Molly Ringwald could save this throwback.
02:45I think you're absolutely right. You are no rock star. Right. Yeah, I mean, no, that's exactly what I'm saying.
02:54Number 18. Terminator Genisys.
02:57August 29th, 1997, Skynet woke up and decided all humanity was a threat to its existence.
03:05After the second film, you could argue that this franchise never returned to its former glory.
03:10The various sequels and spin-offs have left many of us wishing for Judgment Day.
03:14Terminator Genisys does the unthinkable in trying to rehash some of the first movie.
03:18Nice night for a walk, eh?
03:22Nice night for a walk.
03:24Wash day tomorrow. Nothing clean, right?
03:27Nothing clean. Right.
03:29Bringing back Arnold Schwarzenegger, the film tries to get fancy with its cross between a remake and a reboot.
03:34It's tough enough to bring new life to a series without having to harken back to much better work.
03:39Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, and Jai Courtney head up a mismatched group of heroes,
03:43trying to fight Skynet.
03:45Our gang with Calvice puts us at a strategic disadvantage.
03:49Bite me.
03:52That is a very immature response.
03:54The one cool idea of making John Connor a villain gets shrouded in other dodgy decisions.
03:59Number 17. Artemis Fowl.
04:01This is about the sun.
04:04The sun.
04:05Do not underestimate the kid.
04:10Let me show you.
04:12As one of the strangest directing chameleons, Kenneth Branagh adapts this kid's novel into a Disney movie.
04:17It's a cinematic experience that makes you pine for the children's films of yesteryear.
04:21Whoever it was.
04:22Man? Woman?
04:23I couldn't tell.
04:24But they were asking for something called Iaculos.
04:26What is it?
04:29Artemis.
04:30Get dressed and come with me.
04:31There's ample material here to lean into, with fantasy elements and adventure for days.
04:36Unfortunately, Branagh's film seems to spread itself too thin,
04:39with its plot about stolen artifacts and a young hero.
04:42I'm here to officially invite you into my home.
04:46Invite me?
04:47You just shot me!
04:48You must now do whatever I demand.
04:50You'll have to keep me here forever.
04:51The director could have tried to rip off Indiana Jones or even Harry Potter for a much more effective result.
04:57Instead of playing it safe, he blends some weird technical choices into a chaotic product.
05:01Everybody! Take cover!
05:06You also might be scared after watching Josh Gad's CGI mouth stretch.
05:11Number 16.
05:12The Bonfire of the Vanities.
05:14For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?
05:18Mr. Fellow, they're waiting.
05:22This is a story about such a man.
05:24When you look at this on paper, the movie has almost everything you could want.
05:28It's got an all-star cast, an acclaimed director, and it's based on a hit book.
05:32Well, excuse me, I have to go.
05:39What do you think you're going with the tire?
06:00The plot fails to spend enough time with the more complicated material, too.
06:04In a novel, Tom Wolfe could provide all kinds of nuances about wealth, privilege, and the justice system.
06:11And then this newspaper thing started up.
06:13This Peter Fallow person.
06:14Everything was wrong.
06:16A total disregard for the truth.
06:17Now, why do they do this?
06:19This will be your stop here.
06:20This experience mostly lives on as a curiosity piece.
06:24Number 15.
06:25Exorcist II.
06:26The Heretic.
06:26Those bad dreams are still inside you.
06:30There's nothing wrong with me.
06:32Released in 1973, The Exorcist is still regarded as a game-changing piece of horror cinema.
06:37Not many people love the sequel in the same way.
06:40With Linda Blair reprising her role as Regan, the character tries to adjust to normal life before she encounters a
06:46new priest.
06:57This leads the heroes down the road of hypnosis and back into the arms of Pazuzu.
07:02Director John Borman assembles a fantastic cast to confuse and mystify the viewer with campy horror.
07:07Crossover.
07:10Step out of your despair.
07:12If Pazuzu comes for you, I will spit a leopard.
07:17With the likes of Richard Burton and James Earl Jones dealing with demons, this quirky follow-up will have you
07:22scratching your head.
07:24It's crazy to go from such an iconic scare fest to a bold B-movie so fast.
07:29He's mine.
07:30He's chosen me.
07:33Pazuzu's Reagan is the only Reagan.
07:36Number 14.
07:38Righteous Kill.
07:39I've been a cop in the NYPD for over 30 years.
07:43In that time, I've killed 14 people.
07:49Two of the greatest film actors have only teamed up a handful of times.
07:52They appeared in other crime classics like Heat.
07:55But later, the duo starred in the colossal letdown, Righteous Kill.
07:58Lieutenant, how far do you want us to go with this Rambo murder?
08:01I don't know.
08:01I was thinking maybe you'd investigate it a bit more, figure out who did it.
08:05Try to put him in jail.
08:06That is, if it doesn't get in the way of your shuffleboard lessons.
08:09One includes a legendary conversation at a diner, and the other features a character known as a skateboard pip.
08:15Robert De Niro and Al Pacino seem like they've wandered onto the set of a TV movie, playing detectives in
08:20a hacky serial killer plot.
08:22Calm down.
08:22What the hell is it?
08:23You're making all the wrong moves.
08:24What are you talking about?
08:25This ain't a chess game, partner.
08:26Who knows?
08:27Maybe it is.
08:28You go at Perez now.
08:29You know what's going to happen?
08:29You're going to walk right into a trap.
08:31Neither man knows what to do in a project that includes 50 Cent, Rob Dyrdek, and some goofy death scenes.
08:37We certainly hope the lead performers got a nice paycheck for this one.
08:40A righteous man before me stands.
08:45A hero in these filthy lands.
08:51You're going to have to live with the fact that you could have helped prevent the bombings and the violence.
08:56I'm more interested in what this says about you and your FBI.
08:59Leonardo DiCaprio was on a generational run through the 2000s and 2010s, but even this Oscar winner had a few
09:05missteps.
09:05Few people remember this historical drama, as well as The Aviator or The Wolf of Wall Street.
09:10And there's nobody stopping you from making millions.
09:13Don't just sit at home, or the life of your dreams will sail right past you.
09:17This Clint Eastwood movie has serious potential, but drags on through episodes of varying quality.
09:22They should have turned scenes about gangsters and the Lindbergh kidnapping into a more detailed miniseries instead.
09:28DiCaprio tries desperately to make this more interesting, with one of his least effective accents.
09:33You still fancy facial hair, Agent Stokes?
09:37The ladies appreciate it.
09:40And I suppose the ladies' opinions are more important than the Bureau's?
09:43Through it all, you feel like the exciting history of the FBI could have been more exciting.
09:48Jay Edgar ultimately feels like a misuse of a star director and actor's talents.
09:53Are you poking fun at me?
09:55No.
09:56No, no, no, no, no, of course not.
09:59Then please, Mr. Hoover, stand up.
10:01Number 12.
10:02Cherry.
10:03And it's no secret what my face looks like.
10:06All right, no alarms, I'm a whining man, they'll kill me!
10:10After their successful work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Joe and Anthony Russo seemed like they could do almost anything.
10:15They then recruited Spider-Man actor Tom Holland for a dark drama about a veteran turned criminal.
10:21I don't imagine that anyone goes in for a robbery if they're not in some kind of desperation.
10:26With robbery, it's a matter of pure abasement.
10:29It's a gloomier story than Avengers, asking a lot of a star better known for his cheerier performances.
10:34Holland feels out of place in a story that might have been better suited for an indie artist.
10:39Baby.
10:41Yeah, baby, I'm here.
10:42I just, uh...
10:45Are you sure you're doing okay?
10:48From boot camp to small-time robberies, this plot also finds itself in territory well-trodden by superior films.
10:54The Russo brothers tried to push the envelope with a Rust Belt drama that should have been recast and rewritten.
11:00You know, you gotta go back to rehab.
11:04I don't want to be in rehab.
11:08I want to be with you.
11:09Number 11.
11:10The Counselor.
11:11I don't think I miss things.
11:14I think to miss something is to hope that it will come back.
11:17But it's not coming back.
11:20I've always known that since I was a girl.
11:22This might be the cinematic version of someone missing a slam dunk.
11:26Director Ridley Scott brings together an amazing cast and can't quite make them work.
11:31If you pursue this road that you've embarked upon,
11:35you will eventually come to moral decisions that will take you completely by surprise.
11:39With Fassbender and Bardem, you'd think this would be more entertaining or well-acted.
11:44There's also the fact that it's a crime movie written by Cormac McCarthy.
11:48That's a dandy.
11:49What happened?
11:50Confrontation with the doorman.
11:52Confrontation.
11:53Jesus.
11:54What did you say to him?
11:55What could have possibly gone wrong?
11:57McCarthy's script is better suited for one of his novels,
12:00with the clunky dialogue falling short of No Country for Old Men.
12:03I need to know what I stand to win.
12:05Everything.
12:07How's that?
12:08You stand to win everything, call it.
12:10It's also a rare movie that wastes Brad Pitt's appearance altogether.
12:15Scott's film feels like it wants to be a gritty thriller,
12:17but ends up being an exercise in camp.
12:20She goes around and climbs up on the hoot of the Ferrari.
12:24And...
12:26pulls her dress up around her waist.
12:28Number 10.
12:29Jurassic World Dominion.
12:31They need us.
12:32Are you saving these dinosaurs because they need us?
12:35Or are you saving them to absolve yourself?
12:37Claire.
12:38I mean, this is crazy.
12:40Claire.
12:40After three decades of work, the Jurassic franchise contains plenty of ups and downs.
12:45The World Series brought back the property to more box office success and mixed reviews.
12:50I'm not angry.
12:51So that means you don't have to be angry.
12:54I'm not angry.
12:55I can take care of myself.
12:57Hey.
12:58It's okay for us to depend on each other.
13:01Jurassic World Dominion brings you some dinosaur action,
13:04but it needs more than that to justify its existence.
13:07Claire and Owen must find their adopted daughter after she's kidnapped,
13:10while a handful of characters from the first film go on their own bland journey.
13:14So you are going to see some remarkable things today.
13:18We are unlocking the true power of the genome.
13:22We're this close, believe me.
13:24Longtime fans might have preferred seeing Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum in their own adventure.
13:27The movie tries to have it both ways,
13:29delivering a sequel that's nostalgic to a fault.
13:32This is very bad.
13:35This is the same system we used at the park.
13:38Great, so we can turn on the thing and then we all get out of here?
13:43Number 9.
13:44Joker Fully Adieu
13:45She believes you have another person living inside of you.
13:50And it was this other person who committed those crimes.
13:54Careful what you wish for.
13:56A sequel to the 2019 hit seemed tempting,
13:59but it turned out to be a musical disaster.
14:12Joker Fully Adieu finds Arthur Fleck in Arkham before his big day in court.
14:17Joaquin Phoenix returns to the title role.
14:19Later entranced by Lady Gaga is the enigmatic Lee Quinzel.
14:23It's at this point that the movie hopes to be something more profound or darkly fun.
14:27As foolish as he can be
14:34There's always a joker
14:37Neither the music or the comic nature of this film ends up working.
14:41Phoenix and Gaga star in overblown stage numbers that seem to alienate the audience.
14:46I don't know how we're gonna do it
14:50Only know we're gonna try
14:54By the time the trial happens,
14:56this follow-up gives up before delivering a disappointing finale.
15:00Number 8.
15:01Heaven's Gate
15:02We must endeavor to speak to the best of our ability.
15:07But we must speak
15:10according to our ability.
15:12Many people know this as the film that dealt a serious blow to United Artists.
15:17Heaven's Gate is considered by some to be Michael Cimino's disaster
15:20after his Oscar winner The Deer Hunter.
15:22I know that it'll never be the same.
15:26I just wanted to tell you that
15:29maybe
15:30I don't know, maybe you don't want to talk about it.
15:32The filmmaker pushed the narrative and runtime to its limits,
15:36creating an extremely divisive product.
15:38It's a multi-faceted plot that covers a lesser-known period of Wyoming history.
15:42We will go to Johnson County
15:44We will depose the incompetent civil authority there
15:47and we will keep possession of the town until we can take charge of the courts.
15:51Set in the late 1800s,
15:53the movie asks a lot from viewers hoping for a more lively historical epic.
15:57Some have reassessed the project years later despite its dodgy release.
16:00I don't understand you.
16:03I do not understand you.
16:06There's a lot of things you don't understand.
16:08While some prefer the extended cut,
16:09the movie remains a controversial part of 20th century cinema.
16:13Number 7.
16:14Batman v Superman, Dawn of Justice
16:16Jack, listen to me.
16:17I want you to get everyone out of the building right now.
16:20You understand?
16:21You got it.
16:23Let's go.
16:24Come on, start moving now, people.
16:25Let's go.
16:25Zack Snyder's role in the DC Universe wasn't for everybody,
16:28with this being among his most debated entries.
16:31Batman v Superman does contain an intriguing concept that falls flat.
16:35Clark Kent, Daily Planet.
16:36My foundation has already issued a statement in support of books.
16:40Sir?
16:43Wow.
16:44Pretty girl.
16:44Bad habit.
16:45Don't quote me, alright?
16:46While Kal-El seems weaker than ever,
16:48Bruce Wayne appears to be lashing out in more violent ways.
16:51This more brutal depiction of Batman
16:52shuffles between controversial brawls and emotional outbursts.
16:56He has the power to wipe out the entire human race,
16:59and if we believe there's even a 1% chance that he is our enemy,
17:01we have to take it as an absolute certainty.
17:04And we have to destroy him.
17:06The big fight offers a few thrills,
17:08but it leads to a confusing and unsatisfying finish.
17:11To make matters worse,
17:12this run of DC films didn't improve with any sequels.
17:15Help me find the others like you.
17:18Perhaps they don't want to be found.
17:20They will.
17:22And they'll fight.
17:23It would take Matt Reeves and James Gunn
17:25to help revive interest in these caped heroes.
17:28Number 6.
17:29The Dark Tower
17:30You have nothing to be afraid of, my friend.
17:35Death is not far away.
17:38You want to know what's on the other side?
17:40It took many years for the Stephen King adaptation to happen,
17:43but the filmmakers were probably better off staying away from it.
17:46The author's Dark Tower franchise
17:48has many entries that can't be boiled down into one film.
17:51But I saw you.
17:52Your dreams deceived you, boy.
17:55Told you what you want to hear.
17:59I came a long way to find you.
18:01Idris Elba plays the lead gunslinger,
18:03looking to defeat Matthew McConaughey's villain.
18:05Once you watch it,
18:06you start to remember that some of King's books can't leap off the page.
18:09I do not shoot with my hand.
18:12He who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father.
18:16I shoot with my mind.
18:18There's so many fantastical elements and details that collapse into each other.
18:22Watching the plot unfold on screen,
18:24it's hard to imagine a more misguided blend of westerns,
18:27sci-fi,
18:27and fantasy storytelling.
18:29Something's wrong here.
18:30The levels are plateauing.
18:33It's as if he's...
18:34Fighting back.
18:36Why do you resist?
18:38Neither Elba nor McConaughey fit into this jumbled adventure.
18:42Number 5.
18:42Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker.
18:45The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities
18:49some consider to be unnatural.
18:55Many reactions to this Star Wars film weren't exactly positive.
18:59After the nostalgia and divisiveness of the last two entries,
19:02Rise of Skywalker tried to make sense of it all.
19:04Rey.
19:06Be patient.
19:08Start to be thinking it isn't possible
19:09to hear the voices of the Jedi who came before.
19:12Nothing's impossible.
19:14The result was arguably the worst in the whole series.
19:17Emperor Palpatine returns,
19:19Allegiances switch,
19:20and romances fizzle out.
19:22Rey and her allies race to save the galaxy,
19:24but the sinister First Order threatens to upend everything.
19:27As I served you in the old wars,
19:30I serve you now.
19:32Send a ship to a world they know.
19:36Let it burn.
19:38There's also a case of family matters
19:40that further complicate the lore.
19:41While not every movie in the franchise makes sense,
19:44this one's biggest sin
19:45might be its boring content
19:46and poor conclusion.
19:48I haven't the faintest idea
19:50why I agreed to this.
19:51I must be malfunctioning.
19:53I must be malfunctioning.
19:55Number 4.
19:56Eternals.
19:57Are you a wizard?
19:58Uh, what?
20:00Yeah, like Doctor Strange.
20:02No, I'm...
20:03I've noticed some unusual things happen
20:05when I'm around you.
20:06Some great filmmakers
20:07have tackled superhero material,
20:09but not everyone is meant to direct one.
20:11Chloe Zhao won an Oscar
20:12for her contemplative and natural film,
20:15Nomadland.
20:16Nice to see you.
20:17It's been a while.
20:18How have you been?
20:19Good.
20:19Good.
20:20You look good.
20:20Thanks.
20:21Your hair.
20:21Yeah, cut it.
20:22I like it.
20:23I like it a lot.
20:24Her take on Eternals
20:25doesn't quite gel with her sensibility,
20:27featuring many tropes
20:28from your standard Marvel feature.
20:30Zhao does have a fantastic team behind her
20:32to carry the visuals forward,
20:33but at the cost of some scattered storytelling.
20:35What did I say?
20:39Wait, what did I say?
20:40You said,
20:42I am very beautiful.
20:43There are more than a few characters
20:44to keep track of,
20:45and a few loftier ideas
20:47that don't pay off.
20:48While it has some defenders,
20:49this outing doesn't measure up
20:51to the charm
20:51or entertainment of its predecessors.
20:54I understand now.
20:56I can see what she saw.
21:00So many planets.
21:02Thankfully,
21:03this director went back
21:04to making more subdued dramas
21:05that play to her strengths.
21:07What do you wish to do, Hamlet?
21:09I should be
21:10one of the players with a sword.
21:13Sword?
21:14Yes.
21:15Number three,
21:16X-Men Origins Wolverine.
21:18We stick together
21:19no matter what
21:20and take care of anyone
21:22who gets in our way.
21:24Can you do that,
21:25little brother?
21:26Many people love Hugh Jackman
21:27as this mutant hero,
21:29making this a great idea
21:30for a standalone film.
21:31X-Men Origins Wolverine
21:33felt like a huge step
21:34in the wrong direction, though.
21:35Jackman returns to the title part,
21:37but his character becomes trapped
21:38in an overstuffed adventure.
21:40We finally got a good thing going here.
21:42Don't you screw this up.
21:43Enough.
21:43Enough.
21:44We've done enough.
21:45You think you are.
21:47This is what we do.
21:48The movie tries to set up Logan
21:50while also establishing
21:51too many allies and side plots.
21:54There's also the inclusion of Deadpool,
21:55which proves to be awkward
21:56and unsettling.
21:58Okay.
22:00Perfect.
22:02Kayla, get these kids out of here.
22:03Logan?
22:03Find another way out.
22:04With so much history
22:06and material to draw from,
22:08this prequel becomes a confusing
22:09and over-the-top mess.
22:11The same could be said
22:12for a few disappointing X-Men sequels.
22:14Nice suit.
22:15Henry, this is Logan.
22:16He's Wolverine.
22:17I hear you are quite an animal.
22:19Logan's talking.
22:21You know Magneto's gonna come
22:22get Mystique, right?
22:23Number two,
22:25The Mummy.
22:25Sarge, you're not going down there.
22:27You're right.
22:28I'm not.
22:29We are.
22:30At least call it an airstrike.
22:32Airstrike?
22:34Bad idea.
22:34If this film worked out,
22:36it could have started
22:37a new franchise.
22:38It turned out to be
22:39a rare miss for after Tom Cruise.
22:41You told Greenway
22:41that I could mimic
22:42all the qualities
22:43of human intimacy
22:44for 15 seconds.
22:46I mean, let me tell you,
22:47it was not 15 seconds.
22:49The star could be considered
22:50out of place here,
22:52trying to bring action
22:52to this horror adventure.
22:54Cruise gets only one
22:55plane crash scene
22:56to really shine.
22:57Otherwise,
22:57he and the cast
22:58try desperately
22:59to make The Mummy modern.
23:00Who the hell are you?
23:02Who am I?
23:05The more relevant question,
23:07Mr. Morton,
23:09is who exactly are you?
23:11The use of the supernatural,
23:12classic characters,
23:14and CGI
23:14all feels a bit forced.
23:16Russell Crowe
23:17as Dr. Jekyll
23:17can't even bring this film
23:18back from the dead.
23:19Overcome by negative reactions,
23:21the dark universe
23:22never quite got off the ground.
23:23I mean,
23:24thank you for bringing me
23:25back to life and everything,
23:27Nick,
23:27but what are we even doing here?
23:29Where are we going?
23:31Come on, my friend.

23:491. Fantastic Four
23:51We want to support you, Franklin,
23:52but you put a lot of faith
23:53in these kids.
23:54I put all my faith in them.
23:57Many of the Fantastic Four films
23:58have been unable
23:59to capture the spirit
24:00of the comic.
24:01The 2015 version
24:02set out to try again,
24:03but ended up a critical
24:05and commercial mess.
24:06It's a movie without much
24:07in the way of energy
24:08or after chemistry.
24:10If you want to fix
24:11what my generation broke,
24:13if you can do that,
24:15work together,
24:16then you can change
24:17the course of history.
24:20It's a pretty good speech.
24:22Four fine performers
24:23take the central roles,
24:24but none of them stand out.
24:26The uninspired filmmaking
24:27and lesser script
24:28don't add much
24:29to the equation either.
24:30With creative differences
24:31and reshoots
24:33clouding the production,
24:34the movie seemed doomed
24:35in more ways than one.
24:36You couldn't resist coming back.
24:39It's not enough
24:40to ruin your world.
24:43Now you want to ruin mine.
24:46It's biggest crime
24:47might be how boring it is
24:48despite the villain's
24:49unhinged look.
24:51Largely forgotten,
24:52this entry has been swept
24:53under the rug
24:53in favor of the 2025 film.
25:04Do we forget another film
25:05that you didn't expect to hate?
