Two children in wartime England find a German fighter pilot.

In wartime Britain, two boys are looking for a crashed Nazi German plane. One of the boys is rescued from drowning by the pilot of the plane. Should the boys tell the army where the pilot and his wounded companion are hiding?

Friend or Foe (1982) is a heartfelt British drama set during World War II that explores friendship, fear, and the impact of war on ordinary lives. The story follows two young boys, evacuated from London to the countryside, who discover an injured German airman. Torn between wartime distrust and their own sense of compassion, the boys face the difficult choice of treating him as an enemy or a human in need. With emotional depth and powerful performances, this family-friendly drama captures the innocence of youth amidst the harsh realities of conflict.

00:17:01Shut the door.
00:17:06Now sit down and face the front.
00:17:13Last week, I told you that because of the war, we might be seeing some new faces from our
00:17:41capital city, London.
00:17:44Well, now they're here.
00:17:46Tell us your names, please.
00:17:48In a loud, clear voice.
00:17:51David.
00:17:53That's a good Welsh name.
00:17:55And your voice?
00:17:56Tucky.
00:17:57He says his friends call him Tucky.
00:18:05His friends, mind you.
00:18:08And I hope that from today, that will include all of us here.
00:18:13Fortunately, in our village, we've had no personal experience of bombs and air raids.
00:18:22But if you want to know what it's really like, well, now we have two experts.
00:18:28Two eyewitnesses.
00:18:32Any questions?
00:18:33Yes, Vera?
00:18:36How long have I got to stay here?
00:18:39Well, that's not a very polite thing to say, is it?
00:18:41Especially since they've only just arrived.
00:18:44However, to answer your question, I cannot tell you.
00:18:48Maybe until the war is over and victory is ours.
00:18:55And if you're going to ask me when that will be, I cannot tell you that.
00:19:01Even if Mr. Churchill himself was standing here alongside me, he couldn't tell you either.
00:19:10A hand down, Vera.
00:19:12Now, this morning, we're not going to do any lessons.
00:19:20You're going to help me to make our little school safer.
00:19:24Just in case.
00:19:26We're going to stick these little strips of paper in a criss-cross pattern over all the windows.
00:19:32Sir, what's that going to be for?
00:19:34Stand up and tell them, David, Tucky.
00:19:37When a bomb goes off and all the windows get smashed, you won't get cut.
00:19:47The glass sticks to the paper and stops it flying all around the room.
00:19:51There you are, I see.
00:19:53I told you we had the experts with us.
00:19:56Now, I want you all to come up here, starting with the front room,
00:20:00and collect your strips of paper and your paste and your scissors.
00:20:05You look as if you've had a good day.
00:20:07Yes.
00:20:09I was shopping in the village.
00:20:10Now, we can go to France.
00:20:12I'll talk to France to France.
00:20:14There you are.
00:20:16You look as if you've had a good day.
00:20:21Yes.
00:20:23I was shopping in the village.
00:20:25Now we can go to France.
00:20:27We're gonna go to France.
00:20:29Here we go, and try.
00:20:31There you go.
00:20:33There you go.
00:20:34I was shopping in the village. Now we can go together.
00:20:55Everything is strange for me.
00:20:57Once all this was new to me.
00:21:00My home was in France.
00:21:02And even if I wanted to go back, I cannot because the Germans are there.
00:21:08You will see.
00:21:10In a little while everything will be...
00:21:13Oh!
00:21:14Qu'est-ce que c'est alors?
00:21:24Now what shall we do?
00:21:27Change the wheel.
00:21:28We can't.
00:21:29I can.
00:21:30We keep the spare in the back.
00:21:32I've seen my dad do it millions times and helped him.
00:21:41We went to the army. My dad has done a garage.
00:22:00I can't.
00:22:02I can't see my dad.
00:22:04I can't believe in him.
00:22:05I can't see my father.
00:22:06No.
00:22:07I can't.
00:22:08I can't see them.
00:22:09I can't see them.
00:22:10I can't see them.
00:22:11I can't see them.
00:22:12I can't see them.
00:22:13I can't see them.
00:22:14Even look.
00:22:15It's a story of the army.
00:22:16I just wanted to be too late.
00:22:17It's been in the summer.
00:22:18It's been a long run-up.
00:22:19I knew it was a bit kind of pre-tourist.
00:22:20I'm going in the front.
00:22:45To you, I give
00:22:47the Légion d'honneur.
00:22:50And to you,
00:22:53La Croix de Guerre.
00:23:03When Jerry chose you two
00:23:04from the others...
00:23:05He didn't choose us.
00:23:06We're the last two left.
00:23:07Oh, sorry.
00:23:08I forgot.
00:23:09But you know what they say
00:23:10about leaving the best bits
00:23:12till last.

00:27:58Now let's get this straight.
00:27:59You saw it come down.
00:28:07Yes.
00:28:12Well, not come down.
00:28:14It was coming down.
00:28:18Well, I'll tell you something.
00:28:21If it was up to me and nobody else,
00:28:23I'd be believing you.
00:28:24They are good boys, Jerry.
00:28:26They would not tell lies.
00:28:27Yes, I know that, love.
00:28:30But if I tell the police,
00:28:31they'll tell the army.
00:28:32And before I start all that off,
00:28:33I must be certain.
00:28:40Now think.
00:28:42Think very carefully before you answer.
00:28:48Was there really a German plane?
00:28:51Yes, Mr. Reynolds.
00:28:53Promise.
00:28:55Right.
00:28:57I'll tell you.
00:29:01Oh, it's only more than a plane
00:29:02we'll be looking for.
00:29:04You mean the pilot?
00:29:05Yeah.
00:29:06Those big bombers.
00:29:07Could be four or five.
00:29:10Look, they're all dead.
00:29:11Not a sign of it yet, then.
00:29:25Not a sign of it yet, then.
00:29:41Okay.
00:29:41Okay.
00:29:42Good.
00:29:43All right.
00:29:45Now, let's go.
00:29:47Let's go.
00:29:47Okay.
00:29:49Okay.
00:29:49Let's go.
00:29:51Cover.
00:29:51And then, let's go.
00:29:52Let's go.
00:29:52Okay.

00:31:22this is the BBC home and forces program. here is the news and this is Bruce Lofridge reading it.
00:31:29last night the Luftwaffe's main target was again London. three enemy aircraft were destroyed.
00:31:35considerable damage was done to residential
00:31:37still thinking about that plane. are you? I know it's there. we could go look for ourselves. but you searched all day.
00:31:56please? mr. reynolds? please. all right.
00:32:02sir! it's evening. not this evening. it's saturday tomorrow.
00:32:11don't you go looking anywhere we haven't been together.
00:32:14don't have to call the army out again. come looking for you two.
00:32:26light over here.
00:32:49I'm going back.
00:32:56I'm not.
00:32:57One more hour, then we'll go back together.
00:33:01I want to find a shortcut.
00:33:03He said we weren't to go anywhere.
00:33:04We hadn't been without him.
00:33:06We'll find a shortcut.
00:33:09OK.
00:33:19We can cross the river there.
00:33:25I bet this runs into that big lake.
00:33:28Runs out a bit more lightly.
00:33:49Come on, slow coach.
00:33:52Runs out a bit more.
00:34:22I'll get something.
00:34:52Runs out a bit more.
00:35:27Keep it on.
00:35:45Why did you come here?
00:35:54We were looking for your plane.
00:35:55Just two boys.
00:35:57No soldiers, like yesterday.
00:35:59They didn't believe us.
00:36:01Believe?
00:36:02What?
00:36:03That your plane had come down.
00:36:05They couldn't find it.
00:36:09They did not look in the right place.
00:36:12Where's that?
00:36:13There we learned it was water.
00:36:16The plane is under it.
00:36:17The three of my crew.
00:36:19The three of my crew.
00:36:19Now you have found us.
00:36:42If I let you go, what will you do?
00:36:46We could promise not to tell.
00:36:48Would you keep this promise?
00:36:50I'm not making any promises.
00:36:52Pulled you out of the river, didn't he?
00:36:55Would you?
00:36:56I would.
00:37:07And you, my wet friend.
00:37:12Will you tell the soldiers where to look?
00:37:14You could give yourselves up.
00:37:20We will not be taken prisoner.
00:37:26When British pilots are shot down in Germany,
00:37:29they do not give themselves up.
00:37:30They would say, here's a river.
00:37:39It must lead to the sea.
00:37:42There we find a boat.
00:37:46They would move at night.
00:37:48Steal food from fields and houses.
00:37:50Find blankets for the cold nights.
00:37:52And different clothes.
00:37:54We must do the same.
00:37:56And if they were in danger to be caught,
00:37:59they would kill.
00:38:00You are lucky you are boys.
00:38:10If you were men, I would shoot you.
00:38:13And bury your bodies in the ground.
00:38:15So you would never be found.
00:38:25You are free to tell everyone where we are.
00:38:27I hope you will not.
00:38:30All we need is a little time.
00:38:31And food.
00:38:33And a blanket.
00:38:34And some whiskey.
00:38:35And a blanket.
00:38:35And some whiskey.
00:38:35Go home.
00:38:53Go home.
00:38:53And a blanket.
00:38:53Go home.
00:38:54And a blanket.

00:43:35you are
00:43:51is this a time to be fighting each other are we not supposed to be fighting the germans i want to see
00:43:55the two of you outside
00:44:05go back to your places. you two are an utter disgrace. do you hear me? an utter
00:44:15disgrace. first you start telling lies about seeing a German aeroplane and then
00:44:20don't interrupt. because of your willful and wicked lies the police the army and
00:44:26the home guard have been made to look foolish and valuable time and money has
00:44:30simply been thrown away. furthermore a letter detailing the whole incident has
00:44:35been sent by the army to your headmistress and she is extremely
00:44:38displeased and expects you to feel thoroughly ashamed of yourselves at the
00:44:42way you have let down your school. and what shall I be able to tell her when I
00:44:45get back? that I found you fighting. fighting. is this the way you show your
00:44:50gratitude for the kindness of the village and the children who have welcomed you
00:44:53into their school? look at me while I am talking to you. when we first arrived here
00:44:58and you two were the last to be chosen I said to Miss Roberts I was not in the
00:45:02least surprised that nobody wanted to take you and you have proved me absolutely
00:45:05right. now what do you have to say for yourselves?
00:45:10there was a play Miss Ellison. stop telling lies David. I shall report everything to
00:45:16Miss Roberts the moment I get back. you have not heard the last of this. you can be
00:45:19assured of that. the more we tell the truth the less they believe us. I was half way to telling her we found them.
00:45:26what have you got your gas mask on for?
00:45:50what? I said because the whole thing stinks. you're telling me? you know what I think?
00:46:01I think we ought to go back to the farm for some food. good idea I'm starving. to take to the Germans.
00:46:09what's changed your mind? she has.
00:46:24your tea is ready for you. help yourselves do whatever you want. Jerry and I are working in the big field.
00:46:28yes. bye. quick. eat off and take off. what about that? put it all in. what about these? good idea.
00:46:43we need some more food for you or for them. get off. and a blanket. and go on for our bed. we make it so it won't be missed.
00:46:53I found the whiskey.
00:47:00you know they might not be there. what are you saying? we can get all this back. and no one will ever know we took it.
00:47:23they have gone. that's a bit of luck. we'd better get this lot back.
00:47:30brace ya. go on bud. faster! faster! faster! faster!
00:47:36how near are the soldiers? what soldiers? you were waving at the plane. there's nothing wrong with that. you were signalling to them. we thought you had gone.
00:47:58what was that? he said i should have let your friend drown.
00:48:07since he could not have told anyone where we are. i didn't tell nobody. i can't have beer with this blanket and this whiskey and all this food.
00:48:14i stole it from the people who are looking after us. what do you think they do if they found out we took all these 12 Germans?
00:48:19and all you can do is call us liars. we can take it and i hope it chokes you.
00:48:26let's get back.
00:48:29i'm sorry. i was wrong.
00:48:51you have been very kind. i thank you.
00:48:54thanks for pulling me out of the river.
00:48:59i want to imagine you're still here, you're safe.
00:49:02i remember getting what you heard.
00:49:05but i felt happy and then i was like your middleman.
00:49:06i thought you'd grab рез luck and then you'd return.
00:49:08i was going to go to your left.
00:49:09i wanted to learn a little later.
00:49:11i thought you were just as a major mess.
00:49:13i thought you were going to be a little more of a small mess.
00:49:15i knew you had to do a little more of a small mess.
00:49:20what was that?
00:49:21i thought you were going to go to my point?
00:49:23i thought you were going to have a little bit of a little bit of a small mess.
00:49:28I'm not sure what he's doing.
00:49:34Maslow! Come on!
00:49:58David, David, you're asleep.
00:50:28David, David, you're asleep.
00:50:58David, you're okay, what were you shouting about?
00:51:09You're fighting the living daylights out of me.
00:51:13What's the matter?
00:51:15What has happened?
00:51:16He's had a bad dream.
00:51:18You do not have enough blankets on the bed.
00:51:21Well, that really?
00:51:23Yeah, I'm not cold.
00:51:24Are you?
00:51:24No.
00:51:25Well, no more bad dreams now.
00:51:28See you both in the morning.
00:51:43What were you dreaming?
00:51:45You were calling out for your dad.
00:51:48The German was holding me under the water.
00:51:51My dad was waving at me.
00:51:52My auntie's got a big book.
00:51:57All about dreams.
00:52:00I had a look at it once.
00:52:06When my granddad, they said she'd be looking down and watching everything I did.
00:52:12Who said?
00:52:13My two aunties.
00:52:15It really scared me.
00:52:23I don't reckon it's true.
00:52:26Once they're dead, they can't see anything.
00:52:29Can they?
00:52:30Jerry was out searching all night in that storm.
00:52:56What for?
00:52:57The army call it an exercise.
00:53:00They play games.
00:53:02Some of them pretend to be German parachutists and hide.
00:53:06And the others have to find them.
00:53:08What do you think we did find?
00:53:09The pine.
00:53:10Two of them.
00:53:10Caught fast in the water.
00:53:11They'd be dead now if we hadn't got them out.
00:53:13The Germans.
00:53:16Sheep.
00:53:16Two of ours.
00:53:18Struggling away.
00:53:19Poor little things.
00:53:21When you finish that, you two, see if you can find Buster, will you?
00:53:23I can't find him on the farm anyway.
00:53:25They'll be late for school.
00:53:27Yeah, well, from what I've heard, it'd be better off if they stayed away for a little while.
00:53:35I'm not going looking up where the Germans are.
00:53:37I bet yes we're bastards.
00:53:39That's his bad luck, innit?
00:53:41We can't go back to the farm.
00:53:43Not yet, anyway.
00:53:46Hear that?
00:53:47What?
00:53:48Listen.
00:53:50I heard him barking.
00:53:51You never.
00:53:52Have this on me.
00:53:58And I'm not going in there, neither.
00:54:00Scared?
00:54:01No more than you.
00:54:03Buster could be there.
00:54:05All right, then.
00:54:08Well, there's no dead witches inside.

01:01:05Come on.
01:01:06It's not what happened.
01:01:07It's not true.

01:04:19Right then.
01:04:22You and your good lady don't happen to know any German, do you?
01:04:27The fellow doesn't speak a word of English.
01:04:31No, I don't.
01:04:32Sorry.
01:04:33Pity.
01:04:35Right, Sergeant.
01:04:36Right, lads.
01:04:37Peep yours over.
01:04:37You too.
01:04:50Go on.
01:05:00Now, look here.
01:05:02If you can keep your head when all about a losing theirs and blaming it on you,
01:05:06if you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
01:05:10something, something, what is more,
01:05:13you'll be a man, my son.
01:05:15Kipling.
01:05:16Ever heard of him?
01:05:19Damn good chap.
01:05:22Well done for bringing the other one in.
01:05:24Join on!
01:05:32I wonder where they picked him up.
01:05:34Yeah.
01:05:36And why should he say he doesn't speak English?
01:05:40Does he?
01:05:41Better than the other one.
01:05:48He pulled me out the river.
01:05:50And we sort of paid him back with food and that.
01:05:53And my whiskey.
01:05:56Thought it was something like that.
01:05:58Ever, ever, ever, come this morning.
01:06:01If they knew what we'd done, what really happened?
01:06:04They'd probably kick you all the way back to London.
01:06:07And a few would tell you in whispers they would do the same as you.
01:06:12Either way, they're not important.
01:06:14It's what you yourselves believe that matters.
01:06:17I don't know.
01:06:23You can't change it.
01:06:24It's done.
01:06:27But in war, it's wrong to help the enemy.
01:06:29You were their enemy.
01:06:31And he saved your life.
01:06:32I think war's stupid.
01:06:37I think war's stupid.
01:06:37You were their enemy.
01:06:54I don't know why.
