Transcript
00:00:00good comedy and likability there's no sell-by date on that sort of thing what they wrote was
00:00:09timeless because it was authentic it's the kind of show i wish was on the air right now
00:00:16whenever you find it on tv it makes me stop and every joke is still just as funny and this
00:00:23murderer's row of a cast ray was somebody you wanted in your home you wanted to be part of
00:00:29that family i believe in 20 30 40 50 more years we'll still love everybody loves raymond the
00:00:36writing and the acting directing that was near perfect my god and it's in color

00:01:39i love you i love you thank you don't make me cry yet there's gonna be a lot of that
00:01:52let me just tell you something the reason we're doing this is because of the fans i mean i miss
00:01:57it i miss everything i miss you people i miss the cast my real wife is backstage with my tv wife
00:02:05yes if you've been married for a long time folks you know there's a lot of ups and downs and uh
00:02:11this is an example of how long we've been married the other day she actually said to me
00:02:15you know you know you don't talk a lot but when you do it's too much
00:02:22we're gonna have a great night i'm so glad you're here who came from like far away who's from the
00:02:29where are you from philippines i watched you when i was like seven or eight in the philippines
00:02:34yes but of course dubbed in no i learned english you learned english from me
00:02:44well
00:02:48i appreciate it but thank you very much listen before we go even further i want to bring out a man
00:02:54who's been my partner in this venture in this journey for the last 30 years he's the reason
00:03:01that this show exists but this was his baby just like it was mine please welcome phil rosenthal
00:03:22how great is this this is amazing you learned how to speak english from ray romano
00:03:28so were your first english words oh no
00:03:34first of all let's get one thing out of the way this i i'm sure you know is a reunion
00:03:39this is a reunion that not a reboot we're never going to do one because uh we're missing three
00:03:46cast members three family members so we would never try to do it wouldn't be the same and we have too
00:03:51much respect for the show itself and for the for the beautiful audience right to keep it the way it is and
00:03:56thankfully the show is still on every day all over the world which right if you want to visit your
00:04:05friends uh we're here how did we meet well i was in bed and i was watching david letterman with my wife
00:04:16this would have been 1995. 95. uh we had a production company and we were always looking for a
00:04:25funny project and i i think we were all pretty greedy when we saw ray our ladies and gentlemen
00:04:31next guest is a very funny comedian uh making his first appearance with us tonight he can also be
00:04:36wow i just looked like a mid-level mortuary has gotten a hold of me favor now please a nice welcome
00:04:43for ray romano ray
00:04:48my first impression he's wearing his father's suit but that's fine i'm going to let that go
00:04:53i have a three-year-old daughter and twin two-year-old boys wow thank you single people are here
00:05:06i can make them laugh i can make an infant laugh in a second i'll tell you i'm losing my perspective
00:05:10on adult humor i wrote one new joke since my twins were born here is this funny what do you think it is
00:05:15hi hi everybody that rings true with me i had no idea how to be a parent so i thought if i can make
00:05:27the kid laugh i've done something i'm glad i'm glad you laughed if you didn't laugh at that
00:05:33i would have had to come and rub my nose in your bellies yeah ray is the guy and let's go and before
00:05:42he gets in the cab let's get him to sign something and i think it was a combination of his likability
00:05:47and the quality of the material i i thought you know pretty run-of-the-mill topics but the quality
00:05:53of the jokes in those topics i i thought were superior it was just dumb luck that we had anything
00:05:59to do with it it's like you know kids playing with fireworks oh geez it actually exploded it was it was
00:06:07sort of like that that's why we're here a week later they called me and said we'd like to sign you
00:06:21to a deal right to try to produce a sitcom right and then i had to go find a guy to write it and run it
00:06:30and did did you so they set us up on a blind date here in la at arts deli on ventura boulevard and we
00:06:41meet and i say to ray you know tell me about yourself just like i would with any of you if
00:06:46we were going to work together but we didn't know each other so tell me about yourself and you said
00:06:50well i got twin boys and an older daughter and my parents live close by in queens you gotta do the
00:06:55voice you gotta do the little bit yeah okay and then uh uh my my older brother's a police
00:07:00sergeant he lives with them he's always touching uh every bite of food to his gym before he eats
00:07:05and he's kind of jealous of me he saw my stand-up comedy award and he said never ends for raymond
00:07:10everybody loves raymond and do you remember what i said you said uh well i don't think there's anything
00:07:17there jokingly i thought that was a very good place to start and what i didn't know about the
00:07:25personalities in ray's family i filled in with the personalities from my family 90 of everything
00:07:33you saw on the show happened to me or to ray or to one of the other writers
00:07:37the show had premiered and ray said to his wife anna my show just premiered in front of all these
00:07:49people and she said yeah and i just cleaned plum off the ceiling from the kids i think this show means
00:07:57everything to us it got to capture our family ray's family everybody who worked here their families it
00:08:05was just like a community you know we became a community we all felt so safe here and welcomed
00:08:11i remember my dad would he'd come out right before the show he'd greet the audience he always would
00:08:16bring me up say hello he'd do the same joke with the audience about having twins like here's matt
00:08:22i have another son if he was here look like this and then i'd go behind him and stand on that side
00:08:28there's one episode based on a real thing that i did which is when i was in first grade we all had to
00:08:33write books you know little picture books my book was the angry family
00:08:44all the parents came in to read it and you know they were all looking at my parents mommy was mad at
00:08:50the daddy he got an episode out of it yeah the ray on the show is the ray at home and that is because
00:09:01at home he does a lot of annoying things that drive me crazy i think if i were to do an impression it's
00:09:07just a little bit deeper like grunt like i don't know people do the grunt right oh oh come on my back
00:09:15is here it's it's a little oh okay no it's now it's even worse now it's even worse who brought the
00:09:21cookies here who brought the donuts all right i'm just gonna eat one oh my god it's so good
00:09:26five minutes later oh my stomach hurts ally why'd you do that oh damn that oh oh no yep there went
00:09:34again i think one of the things that put it over the top where cbs had to decide whether to put us on
00:09:44was something out of your actual life which was when i'm writing a pilot i'm thinking how do we convey
00:09:50exactly in a short amount of time how crazy ray's parents are and then this happened to me where i
00:09:58sent my parents i thought i was being nice a gift of fruit of the month club
00:10:06i appreciate the thought raymond but please don't ever send us any more food again okay thanks
00:10:11thanks well another box is coming next month what more pairs no no it's a different fruit every month
00:10:20every month yes yes that's why they call it fruit of the month club it's a club oh my god what do i
00:10:27have to do with all this fruit well most people like it ma you share it share it with all your
00:10:32friends which friends i don't know lean stand lean stand by their own fruit oh why did you say this to me
00:10:40what do you think we are invalids we can't go out and get our own fruit i'm trying to tell all right
00:10:51i'm canceling the fruit club oh good thank you raymond thank you and don't do that again like we don't
00:10:58have enough problems what i didn't realize and what i learned from doing that from us doing that
00:11:12oh wait your parents are all crazy too yes we get it all the time people from all over parts of the
00:11:18world tell us that's my mother that's my that's my father we didn't know your mother we were writing
00:11:23our mother and we have so many favorite episodes some of the ones we're going to talk about tonight
00:11:28i have one that just came to mind and it's good since we're starting you know we did a flashback
00:11:33episode at the end of every season and this was my favorite because it's how they met meaning ray and
00:11:40deborah you know it looks like i made too much food here if you're um hungry oh yeah yeah you want
00:11:49some all right yeah wrap it up i'll eat it in the truck
00:11:52can i ask you something yeah sure were you making all that food for someone and they didn't show up
00:12:06they showed up
00:12:10hey you want something to drink yeah yeah well let me get that okay the glasses are right there okay
00:12:15rice yeah
00:12:32i like the i like the round cubes with the holes in them those are my favorite kind of cubes
00:12:36are you okay yeah i'm fine ah you all right yeah
00:12:51you're a good kisser all right you're in shock
00:12:59you're both so great in that and and it's just so sweet to me in addition to being funny the flashback
00:13:05episodes were always so fun fun to do i look i like all the episodes but of course there's some
00:13:10we like more than others and i have like a top five and i the one off the top of my head
00:13:16is uh called talk to your daughter so talk to your daughter is about
00:13:22at some point having to have the talk with your child about the birds and the bees you know when a
00:13:29man and a woman love each other very much they get married and then sometimes they decide to make a
00:13:37baby i know that the man and the woman have to do something but why are we born why has god put us here
00:13:56why are we here daddy yeah i heard you i heard you
00:14:08you don't want to talk about sex
00:14:13what do you want to talk about sex she started asking questions about life why did god put us here
00:14:18crazy stuff like that wow so what did you say i told her we're here because heaven is crowded
00:14:26i got ambushed if you want to know what's in the bible why don't you talk to father hubley hey
00:14:35that's right you know what it's his job to know these things you're gonna call him yeah what are we
00:14:40putting the money in that basket for me and the family we're just sitting around and we had a quick
00:14:46question for you what is the meaning of life so if you could get back to us as soon as possible we
00:14:54appreciate it all right
00:15:01i'd hate to admit it but i'm guilty of what you i didn't have that talk with my kids now i have 19
00:15:07grandchildren
00:15:08all right they don't want to hear two old guys talk should we they don't should we bring out uh
00:15:14bring out some people yes yes let's do that we'll do it right away
00:15:28when i got married i didn't just get a husband i got a whole freak show that set up their tent right
00:15:33across the street oh you were open and considerate and willing to look at your own faults you made me
00:15:40sick ray ray ray ray hello raymond i do not have a drinking problem sir what i have is a mother-in-law problem
00:15:50no no no we're going to counseling no meant what i said here today i love you i'm pregnant i am not
00:16:03the yeller you are the reason for the yeller i have no idea what i have to put up with
00:16:07ladies and gentlemen patricia heaton
00:16:21look at these two i'm so happy do you know i didn't say this we saw 200 women before we found
00:16:44patty heaton 200 and when she came in she just knocked it out of the park i mean you can talk
00:16:51about what that day was like well i was going through and i think why the show worked we were
00:16:57all going through what the barone family was going through in our lives we all were newly married yes
00:17:03and i had i had a three-year-old and a one-year-old in my life right i had a babysitting issue when i was
00:17:10coming to the audition i needed to get back i was cutting out coupons for 50 cents off two packs of
00:17:16ballpark franks and so i needed the gig and i got there and there was a waiting room of at least eight
00:17:23women and i thought i'm never going to get back in time for the babysitter and so i went in and sat
00:17:29there and i just needed to get this audition done and um there was a guy sitting in the corner and i
00:17:34thought maybe he can get me some water while we're waiting for a ray to come it was him and i didn't
00:17:39really have to do research and i didn't really have to do acting because it was what we were all dealing
00:17:44with in our marriages and so fortunately we got to monetize that yeah yes you were living the role
00:17:51you were living the role you know when i need to talk to ray about like my feelings or our children
00:17:57i know i have until the commercial's over that gives me 30 seconds and if there's a girl in the
00:18:02commercial or a truck with big wheels or god forbid a monkey i think it was the first show i'd worked
00:18:09on i've worked for a while on tv that really encouraged us to bring in our stories from home
00:18:14phil in the writer's room only half jokingly said all right we need two more stories anybody having a
00:18:19fight with their spouse phil's idea when he was running the show was how can you write about real
00:18:24life if you can't live one there's an episode of raymond called the 10th anniversary where ray and
00:18:29deborah put in the vhs tape of their wedding on their 10th anniversary
00:18:33and discovered that he's taped over with a super bowl
00:18:43i did that but it was my first anniversary we put in our vhs tape and discovered that i had taped
00:18:50over our wedding with an episode of everybody loves raymond where did our wedding go
00:18:54it's just like the stories seem authentic then whether it's more exaggerated than maybe it would
00:19:04have happened in real life like that kernel of truth i think comes through well 10 years that's enough
00:19:14it was such a pleasure to write for both of you and there was one other
00:19:20there was phil's getting emotional a little bit because it's a dream to wind up with people like
00:19:29this if you're just a writer you pray for someone to come along and give so much more beyond it and
00:19:36to make it real my favorite thing about the cast was how they all committed to the most silly thing
00:19:46as if it was life and death and that made it so alive and real and relatable and the two of you had
00:19:54the most spectacular chemistry and i always said that patty heaton's the best wife on television well we're also
00:20:06where i think we're forgetting one little key element that really sold me on you during that first
00:20:13audition that's how desperate i was to get the job yeah well they don't know what you're talking
00:20:17about i kissed him yes there was there was a part where it says she kisses her husband and every other
00:20:24actress just kind of mimed it for some reason she did it nobody and when she walked out i go that's the one
00:20:35patty do you have a favorite episode
00:20:37um yes there was the one where we went away for a weekend and we put the suitcase on the landing we
00:20:47put it there and neither of us would take it up and empty it and we keep waiting for the other person
00:20:52to do it what are you doing what just packing a soda for the road problem that's how you're getting on
00:21:03the airplane yeah yeah yeah i'm traveling light i'm traveling loose what are you a hobo
00:21:14why don't you take the suitcase you know what i don't need it
00:21:21okay you know what
00:21:22oh yeah good you know what i'm getting it what's that supposed to mean it means i'll get it
00:21:38i'll be the one who got it oh no no no no no i will get it let the record show that i got it
00:21:48let go
00:22:05i'm the one moving everybody look at me
00:22:09Don't let a suitcase filled with cheese be your big fork and spoon.
00:22:32This is all your fault.
00:22:38When did we get those?
00:22:46That's one of my favorite lines ever in the show, because that to me is marriage, especially a long marriage.
00:22:51Yes. So many people. And this is really, I think, what's not important about comedy.
00:22:59But every month, at least, if not every week, somebody either on social media or if I run into them,
00:23:06it says, your show was the one thing that our family could laugh together when my father was sick.
00:23:12And it was his favorite thing that's been going on for 30 years.
00:23:16And so, you know, it just feels like you're able to do that.
00:23:21That's beautiful.
00:23:24We needed to cast Ray's brother.
00:23:27Should we bring him out soon?
00:23:28Trouble in paradise?
00:23:41Why would you want to hear me complain about Ray?
00:23:46Perhaps we haven't met. I'm Robert Barone.
00:23:50Hey, hey.
00:23:51Hey, Robert!
00:23:53Everybody loves Rayman.
00:23:55Surprise! It's an iguana.
00:23:56I need to say something.
00:24:11No wife, no children.
00:24:14Pathetic.
00:24:18Thanks for the kind words.
00:24:22Brad Garrett, everybody!
00:24:24I'll come around.
00:24:37I'll come around.
00:24:43Phillip.
00:24:45Oh.
00:24:48Oh, boy.
00:24:52Ray, it is so great to meet you.
00:24:59Do you have any memories of coming in and meeting Ray?
00:25:02I remember auditioning when I read who Robert was.
00:25:06I just felt I knew this guy, you know?
00:25:09I was the youngest of three brothers growing up, and they were, you know, much more popular,
00:25:16and they had a lot more going for them, and I kind of felt like the kid that grew up under the sink, you know?
00:25:22So when I read it, I kind of felt like I knew who Robert was, you know?
00:25:28Yes, Ray.
00:25:29Um, how could you...
00:25:31You have to raise your hand.
00:25:31It's your show.
00:25:35How could you fit under the sink?
00:25:38Well...
00:25:38We would write lines, jokes, and sometimes we didn't need them.
00:25:46Why?
00:25:46Because when we would cut to a face...
00:25:49Yeah.
00:25:49...they already said it with their look.
00:25:51And it was better than anything we could write.
00:25:54And the king of this was Brad.
00:25:55Oh, thank you.
00:25:57Yes.
00:25:57That's very sweet.
00:25:58Just beautiful.
00:25:59Any, uh, lovely stories you have from your days on the show?
00:26:03Not really.
00:26:04No?
00:26:06Many.
00:26:07You know what I think of a lot is the episode, She's the One, where, uh, the girl I was dating ate the fly.
00:26:14Oh, yes.
00:26:15And when you tried to tell me what you saw in the kitchen, that scene was so great,
00:26:22but there was a moment where you were...
00:26:25Yeah, I almost passed out.
00:26:27Tell me, you were screaming or you had a, some type of...
00:26:30Well, I saw her eat the fly.
00:26:31Yeah.
00:26:32And then you come in and you talk to Patty and say, I really think she's the one.
00:26:36And I say, she's not the one.
00:26:37Right?
00:26:38And, and I tell you she ate the fly, you don't believe me, and I tell the story,
00:26:42and again, all this pent up, and finally I end with, she took the fly, she put it in,
00:26:46and then I scream at, she ate it!
00:26:49And I hyperventilated, and if you look very closely, you see me go, ooh, ooh,
00:26:54because I almost, I felt like I was going to pass out.
00:26:57Who hyperventilates saying a line?
00:27:02Oh.
00:27:05Hey, you got him!
00:27:06Yeah, I guess I did.
00:27:08Wow, good hands.
00:27:10All right, um...
00:27:10Oh, it's okay, I got it.
00:27:11Okay, I'll be, I'll put this down.
00:27:13Okay.
00:27:13Okay.
00:27:13Okay.
00:27:13Okay.
00:27:13Okay.
00:27:13Okay.
00:27:13Okay.
00:27:14Okay.
00:27:14Okay.
00:27:14Okay.
00:27:15Okay.
00:27:15Okay.
00:27:16Okay.
00:27:17Okay.
00:27:18The fly that was flying around, Angela killed it, it fell on the table, she put it in a napkin,
00:27:42and then she,
00:27:43Yeah!
00:27:50What?
00:27:57Commitment!
00:27:59Brad, do you, do you, was that your favorite or do you have a favorite?
00:28:02Boy, there's so many.
00:28:03I really loved Lucky Suit, where Robert has an interview to work with the FBI.
00:28:12So, as I was saying...
00:28:13Is this a joke?
00:28:16Excuse me?
00:28:17Dear FBI agent Garfield, I'm writing to ask for your understanding.
00:28:22You have an interview this morning with my son, Robert Barone.
00:28:33Oh, Robbie, you scared me.
00:28:52How did your interview go?
00:28:55Come here, let me tell you about it.
00:29:00Didn't it go well?
00:29:01Oh, it was going okay.
00:29:04And then Agent Garfield read me a letter about Crazy Robert and his Lucky Suit.
00:29:10Mom, what did you do?
00:29:12She faxed the FBI a letter about how she ruined my Lucky Suit.
00:29:15I wasn't sure it went through. It was the first time I ever used a fax machine.
00:29:21Marie, why don't you go into the kitchen and...
00:29:23Robert, how about you just stay here and maybe blink a few times?
00:29:31This is a good story.
00:29:36After one of my shows, this guy came up to me after the show and it was really amazing.
00:29:44He was a veteran and I remember that Phil, you and Ray would always send the DVDs to our troops when the show was on the air.
00:29:57And he gave me his retirement challenge coin and he served from 1999 to 2020.
00:30:08And he said, you guys really helped when we needed the humor more than anything.
00:30:14And it really kept us buoyant in what we were going through every day.
00:30:20It's an honor to be on this bus and thanks for letting me on even though I was a giant.
00:30:32There's more people coming out. We'll be right back, I guess.
00:30:40We are ready for you.
00:30:42Bye.
00:30:50This is something, huh?
00:30:55Yeah, something.
00:30:58Something.
00:31:05It's something!
00:31:20And it still has the dent from where I picked Patty up and threw her into the chair.
00:31:37Very good.
00:31:39So there was someone else in that scene that I knew for a long time before we did the show.
00:31:45I saw her first in a play and I thought she was really funny.
00:31:49And then I married that girl.
00:31:51I might not be the best person to help.
00:31:53I've spent the last ten years looking for an engagement ring.
00:31:57Oh, Robert, this is my friend Amy.
00:31:58We used to work at the PR firm together.
00:32:00Hi!
00:32:01Hi, Ray!
00:32:01Here we go!
00:32:02Oh, look, this one looks like a heart.
00:32:05Stop your crying and get off your pity pot, Nancy!
00:32:10God.
00:32:10I keep forgetting what a freak show this family is
00:32:13until somebody new comes in and looks at us like that.
00:32:21Wait!
00:32:27Did your mother come over and make things worse as usual?
00:32:38Here's Monica!
00:32:40Monica!
00:32:41Yes!
00:32:43You can tell Monica brought a slightly different energy to the family, right?
00:33:13You know, just being here is so incredible, right?
00:33:16I can't believe how everyone did the set, like, everybody backstage.
00:33:21And you guys being here, it's so overwhelming!
00:33:24It's unbelievable!
00:33:26Talk about, what about, because first you were recurring, right?
00:33:30Yes.
00:33:30Well, first I didn't even know I'd be recurring.
00:33:32Can I tell you a little something?
00:33:34Yes.
00:33:34I was pregnant with our daughter, Lily, and I didn't know it.
00:33:38I found out after, so that first, I didn't know that!
00:33:43And flash forward, too, she just got married!
00:33:45And she just got married, Liz!
00:33:46She just got married.
00:33:47Oh, Lily, Lily got married, yeah.
00:33:48We had a lot of babies on this show.
00:33:53A lot of babies.
00:33:54The moral is, this show made us horny.
00:33:56We were happy!
00:33:59When did you officially know you were a regular?
00:34:05It just started building and building and building.
00:34:07And the Robert and Amy, it really was, you know, I've had only a couple comedy partners
00:34:13in my life, but this one, and that writing to this couple was so perfect, wasn't it?
00:34:19It was great.
00:34:20It was so fun, and it was, uh, to then be with, like, one of the greatest comic teams
00:34:26of all time, Ray and Debra.
00:34:29That's you guys!
00:34:30Yeah, you were brilliant!
00:34:32So, it was really lucky.
00:34:34Do you have a favorite episode?
00:34:35Oh, yeah.
00:34:36All of them you mentioned.
00:34:37There's so many favorite episodes.
00:34:39The one that captures my heart is because my dear, beloved Georgia, who I was very close
00:34:45with, the Georgia Angle, who played my mom, and it's Pat's Secret.
00:34:50Oh, hi.
00:34:52Is everything all right?
00:34:55What, can't sleep?
00:34:58Yeah, me neither.
00:35:10Mind if I bum a ciggy?
00:35:13Robert was smoking.
00:35:15I wasn't.
00:35:16I wasn't!
00:35:17Smell him.
00:35:18Come here.
00:35:19Come here.
00:35:20Oh, my God!
00:35:23Yeah!
00:35:25Do you know what he's been doing?
00:35:27Smell him.
00:35:30Come here, I'm not there.
00:35:32It wasn't lying.
00:35:33It was more like she was just letting off steam so you don't let it out on the person you love.
00:35:38You know?
00:35:40Like Ray.
00:35:40He has to drive around the block a few times every night listening to the radio before
00:35:45he goes home to face Debra.
00:35:47Are you crazy?
00:35:48Are you crazy?
00:35:49Are you crazy?
00:36:01Are you crazy?
00:36:04When I'm angry at my cat, Miss Puss, sometimes I'll sneak up behind her and bark like a dog.
00:36:10I like to blow up fireworks.
00:36:13I like to blow up fireworks.
00:36:21Pat!
00:36:22I thought since it wasn't a secret anymore.
00:36:27She was just in heaven and she always talked to everyone about the writing on this show,
00:36:47working with Phil for years and years and years after.
00:36:50So thank you for letting us be with that.
00:36:53We're so lucky to work with these comedy legends that we idolized.
00:36:57You know, we stand on the shoulders of the great people that came before us.
00:37:01Obviously, people have passed and we've seen a lot of clips of our mom and dad on the show.
00:37:08But when we come back, we'll talk about them.
00:37:09So, let's talk about the parents.
00:37:34For you and me, it's very personal because they were so based on our parents.
00:37:42Yeah.
00:37:43The mother was more you.
00:37:44I mean, the mother was definitely more you.
00:37:46And the dad was more you, maybe?
00:37:47I used to say, everything you saw Peter do, my father probably did in real life without pants on.
00:37:54Yes.
00:37:55Yes.
00:37:56But I remember just talking about Peter during the pilot episode.
00:38:00So now I'm a young guy who just got fired from news radio.
00:38:04And here I am again attempting a show.
00:38:08And I'm nervous.
00:38:09And Peter is the great Peter Boyle, this iconic movie guy.
00:38:13And he's an imposing figure.
00:38:15I didn't know then how sweet he really was.
00:38:19And I hadn't really had a conversation with Peter.
00:38:21And our paths were crossing.
00:38:23And I swear to God, it must have been right here.
00:38:25And he just stops me.
00:38:27And I haven't said anything to him.
00:38:29He just stops me.
00:38:30And I guess he could tell.
00:38:31He could tell that I was a little nervous.
00:38:33And he just looks and he goes, I remember the words.
00:38:35He just goes, it's just like water.
00:38:38Just let it flow.
00:38:40And then he leaves.
00:38:42And at that time, I'm like, what does that mean?
00:38:47And even though, as an actor, I didn't know exactly what that meant, but I do now.
00:38:53Just the gesture.
00:38:55The gesture of him reaching out to me.
00:38:58It's everything.
00:38:59It's everything.
00:39:00Yeah.
00:39:02Beautiful.
00:39:02Anyway, go ahead.
00:39:03Talk about Doris.
00:39:06We saw a hundred ladies for the part.
00:39:10They all read with that fruit of the month scene.
00:39:13No one came close to Doris Roberts.
00:39:15No one.
00:39:16No one.
00:39:16No one.
00:39:16No one.
00:39:16No one.
00:39:16No one.
00:39:16No one.
00:39:17She was what was in my head and in my life and was so beyond even.
00:39:25My real mother used to say, you know, it is a little exaggerated, but you never saw that with Doris because she was always spot on.
00:39:38She was always a hundred percent believable.
00:39:41Peter, too.
00:39:42Again, I keep reiterating the same thing.
00:39:44We could be the best writers in the world.
00:39:47It wouldn't matter if we didn't have these people and Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts.
00:39:55Let me show you something.
00:39:57Let me show you something.
00:40:05Marie?
00:40:06Oh, well, okay.
00:40:09Oh, Frank, this is wonderful.
00:40:13You dumb bastard.
00:40:17What?
00:40:18Write it out.
00:40:19You put a stop to this now.
00:40:21All right, Dad.
00:40:22All right.
00:40:22Well, let me ask you.
00:40:24She's in a bad mood, what?
00:40:25Two, three days tops?
00:40:28And before you know it, what used to be a bad mood now takes over and becomes her only mood.
00:40:33And then, well, then you become like me.
00:40:41When not a day goes by that I don't wish there was a comet screaming towards Earth to bring me sweet relief.
00:40:59That's going to need another coat.
00:41:03Did you say that you like Amy more than Deborah?
00:41:08I am not saying that I like Amy more than Deborah.
00:41:15I know.
00:41:16I know you're not saying it now.
00:41:20But did you say it ever?
00:41:28What if I told you that we have a tape of you saying it, Mom?
00:41:33Give me the tape.
00:41:42What we do in our bedroom is our own business, and I prefer not to be known as the whore of Lindbrook.
00:41:47We can move from Lindbrook.
00:41:59Can't you ever just be quiet?
00:42:02Don't you tell me to be quiet.
00:42:04I have a mind of my own, you know.
00:42:05I can contribute.
00:42:07I'm not just some trophy wife.
00:42:09You're a trophy wife?
00:42:22What contest in hell did I win?
00:42:28You still can't think of anything nice to say about me?
00:42:31How about I sleep on it?
00:42:42It's all jokes.
00:42:43Frank, what are you doing?
00:42:56No, no, no.
00:42:57I need that, Frank.
00:42:59I like you better without the crap on your face.
00:43:15I left my heart
00:43:24In San Francisco
00:43:31Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.
00:43:35My wife thinks I'm in the bathroom.
00:43:36I think we all have special memories of each one of them.
00:44:06Doris could drink everybody under the table.
00:44:10Champagne.
00:44:11That was her choice.
00:44:12Pretty good.
00:44:13Never stop working, right?
00:44:14Never stop working on hiatuses.
00:44:16Always working.
00:44:17Taking acting classes.
00:44:19And directing plays.
00:44:2190.
00:44:21Yes.
00:44:22And Peter was pretty much the opposite of that guy.
00:44:26He was kind of a renaissance man.
00:44:31Yes, he wasn't really like that character.
00:44:33Two things about him you may not know.
00:44:35He studied to be a monk.
00:44:37Yes.
00:44:38I asked him, what made you give it up?
00:44:40He said there weren't enough girls there.
00:44:43And best man at his wedding was John Lennon.
00:44:49Yeah.
00:44:49Yeah.
00:44:50How about that?
00:44:51As a matter of fact, the girl he married is here tonight.
00:44:55Yeah.
00:44:55Lorraine Boyle is sitting right up there.
00:44:57Lorraine.
00:44:58Well, you know, it's funny.
00:45:08I remember when Peter Boyle was cast and we were like so excited because we're going to be able to play every week with this legend.
00:45:17And Ray went, you know, I think it's so fitting that the guy who's playing your dad was young Frankenstein.
00:45:27Yeah.
00:45:28Yeah.
00:45:30Well, they became our parents in more ways than one on the show.
00:45:34Yes.
00:45:35To Doris and Peter.
00:45:35Yes.
00:45:36Yes.
00:45:37Yay.
00:45:37Cheers.
00:45:38Yes.
00:45:39Cheers.
00:45:39Cheers.
00:45:41Bye.
00:45:43I love you.
00:45:58Hey.
00:46:00Good?
00:46:01Yeah, yeah good. Even better the second time now that my tongue's not scared.
00:46:10Everything happened over food. There was so much food on the show and it just
00:46:15sort of taught you that like lessons are learned and arguments are made. When
00:46:20you're sitting down to eat you learn a lot about each other.
00:46:23You should ask Debra how she makes this.
00:46:25I should ask Debra. I should ask Debra. Give me that.
00:46:47Food is, you know, it's family. Gathering around the table just like love.
00:46:53You better not have started that cake. That cake is for all of us. I'm coming over.
00:47:01Food is love because food is bringing people together and so yeah we hit it all the time.
00:47:08A man needs chicken. Food is everything and that's because that's Phil's obsession.
00:47:16For Phil, food was the most important thing and it's the great connector.
00:47:20We actually had a lot to eat on the plane.
00:47:23So off we go to Italy and of course the character of Ray Barone is miserable.
00:47:31Ray, this is the Spanish steps. Where's the Spanish elevator?
00:47:36But I remember this one moment.
00:47:38Pizza. Oh, thank you.
00:47:40And that piece of pizza when he put it in his mouth.
00:47:46Wow.
00:47:47It's okay.
00:47:48Ray has this epiphany about everything.
00:47:50This is like the best pizza I ever had, man.
00:47:52He realizes the great thing which is his family, the culture, the people.
00:47:58All those things are actually truly beautiful and he's been missing them the whole episode.
00:48:07Look, we're in the kitchen.
00:48:09Food was a very important part of the show.
00:48:12I think Marie held sway over the entire family because she was a great cook and who wasn't?
00:48:22But we should talk about our children.
00:48:24Daddy! Daddy! Get me!
00:48:29Everybody say cavities.
00:48:34Cavities!
00:48:36Mommy, that man's smoking.
00:48:39Narc.
00:48:41You look like you're doing pretty good here. You don't need my help, do you?
00:48:44Yes, I do.
00:48:45All right, don't worry. Daddy's here to help you.
00:48:49You can't make me.
00:48:50Look, I'm your father. You have to do what I say.
00:48:52Why are you?
00:48:54Why? Why?
00:48:57Come on, guys. We're not snorkeling. We're eating.
00:49:01It's fine. It's fine. I'm fine. It's fine.
00:49:07We were just, uh...
00:49:08Hey, you know what?
00:49:15Madeline and Sullivan Sweeten, are you here?
00:49:32Wow.
00:49:33Everybody's grown up.
00:49:35In the blink of an eye, your kids grow up.
00:49:38Hi, you guys.
00:49:40Hi.
00:49:42So emotional.
00:49:43I really were.
00:49:44I know.
00:49:45Do you want to sit on my lap?
00:49:47What was it like to grow up here with us, with us maniacs?
00:49:52I mean, I don't know. It just felt like what we were supposed to do.
00:49:56I don't think we understood, right, how impactful the show was or how impactful what we were doing was.
00:50:03So, yeah, I would get upset that, you know, I couldn't be in the school play.
00:50:07Yeah, but looking back, you know, I wouldn't change anything about it.
00:50:11That's so great to hear.
00:50:12It's so good to see you guys.
00:50:13It really is.
00:50:14It really is.
00:50:15Tell us what you're doing now.
00:50:16I just had a baby.
00:50:17Yeah!
00:50:18Yay!
00:50:20Your grandparents!
00:50:21Yeah, your grandkids!
00:50:23Yeah, I brought them here with me today.
00:50:26You know, my husband are in the back.
00:50:28Oh, great.
00:50:29They're excited to meet you.
00:50:30You guys were always in a good mood.
00:50:34We had lots of candy.
00:50:36But you were also, I want to say, fantastic.
00:50:40We were on set with some of the most amazing comedic actors in the world.
00:50:45So it was, you know, we were learning from everybody how to do it.
00:50:49And that's the only reason that we were, you know, any good at it, I think.
00:50:53Yeah, and I definitely feel like I carried that experience through my whole life.
00:50:56You know, I try to bring that kind of comedy with me wherever I go.
00:51:01Do you have a favorite episode?
00:51:02You know, it's funny.
00:51:03I'm not in my favorite episode.
00:51:06Now as an adult, as I've been watching it back, I found there's so many more adult things
00:51:11that I didn't realize when I was a kid.
00:51:14And my favorite episode is Marie's statue.
00:51:17Oh!
00:51:19I give you this.
00:51:21Isn't it a bit too... ladylike?
00:51:36Great.
00:51:37See?
00:51:38Oh, now I do, thank you.
00:51:40It looks like something, though. What does it look like?
00:51:45You can get close, you can even touch it.
00:51:47I'm fine.
00:51:51I gotta tell you, I don't know what the hell this is, but I love it.
00:51:58Hello, Raymond Barone?
00:52:00Mm-hmm.
00:52:01I'm Sister Anne, this is Sister Beth.
00:52:03We're here to pick up the sculpture.
00:52:09Forgive me, but is that not a sculpture of...
00:52:13What?!
00:52:15Oh!
00:52:22Oh, my God, I'm a lesbian.
00:52:31But what happened to the sculpture?
00:52:33I think it was in Doris's backyard.
00:52:35Oh, yeah.
00:52:37I think her grandkids used it as a slide.
00:52:39Oh!
00:52:46That's wrong.
00:52:48Sullivan, you've got one.
00:52:50Oh, I've got plenty of good memories, you know, playing tag in the bleachers and, you know, the prop room.
00:52:56But I think I'm a sucker for a happy ending, and the final scene with everybody gathered around the table has got to be my favorite memory.
00:53:01My favorite memory.
00:53:02Like we are now.
00:53:04Hey, what do you got there, French toast?
00:53:05No, no, no, no, don't worry, I'll make something.
00:53:07Yay!
00:53:09All right, sit down.
00:53:10All right, Uncle Robert told me you're big, and if you don't want to get eaten, move out of the way.
00:53:13Thank you, darling.
00:53:15What do we have there?
00:53:16Here, have some food in the meantime.
00:53:19Ah, some of the grapes, so much grapes.
00:53:21Right.
00:53:22I think it's getting a little too crowded in here.
00:53:24Yeah, it is.
00:53:25Mm-hmm.
00:53:26You know what?
00:53:27We need a bigger table.
00:53:28Yes, sir.
00:53:29All right.
00:53:30Who would like some chocolate chip pancakes?
00:53:32All right.
00:53:34Woo!
00:53:39The philosophy of we need a bigger table is everything, to me.
00:53:45You know, the family is a microcosm of your families, we hope, and of wherever you live, and our country and the world, we need a bigger table.
00:53:57So that's the idea, that's why I wanted it to be the last thing.
00:54:06Can we mention also...
00:54:08Sawyer, yes.
00:54:09Sawyer, yes.
00:54:10So, Sawyer, of course, is no longer with us, and we miss him, and he, just like you were, just this bright energy light.
00:54:18None of us really expected what happened.
00:54:20But, you know, I try to think about the good moments, and often times that's here on the set.
00:54:27I just think it's so important, any conversation that we're having about Sawyer, we're very passionate in our family about suicide prevention.
00:54:35It is the second leading cause of death, between the ages of 18 to 25, but 90% of people who seek treatment are cured.
00:54:44And so many of the messages that we get are people saying, I'm so grateful to have heard about your brother, he saved my life.
00:54:51Is there an organization that you work with, on behalf of Sawyer, where people could reach out to you?
00:54:58We work with the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.
00:55:01Okay.
00:55:02That's our main place.
00:55:03Okay.
00:55:04Yeah.
00:55:05But, you know, people can grab a Sawyer t-shirt, we do t-shirts every year, and all of the proceeds go there.
00:55:11Great.
00:55:12Yeah.
00:55:23You're not getting off.
00:55:25Don't push me.
00:55:26Ah!
00:55:27Get out!
00:55:29Get out!
00:55:34I almost didn't know how lucky I was working with amazing actors.
00:55:40You're not getting off.
00:55:41You're not getting off.
00:55:42Get out!
00:55:43Get out!
00:55:44Get out!
00:55:45Get out!
00:55:46Get out!
00:55:47Get out!
00:55:48Get out!
00:55:49Get out!
00:55:50That allowed you then to take these big swings with physical comedy.
00:55:51Boom!
00:55:52And then the actors, just so gifted.
00:55:53Robert, let me tell you what they did, okay?
00:55:56Oh, I am tired, sweetness.
00:56:07Oh, yeah.
00:56:08Oh.
00:56:09Oh, yeah.
00:56:10Oh.
00:56:11Oh, baby.
00:56:12Does that feel good?
00:56:14Oh.
00:56:15Oh.
00:56:16Hmm.
00:56:17Come here.
00:56:18Come here.
00:56:19Hmm.
00:56:20Come here.
00:56:31If Debra has to give him permission to make more decisions, and then it has to spectacularly
00:56:37end badly.
00:56:38Debra's going all nutty on me over here, but what else is new?
00:56:42That means Ray's got to, I don't know, like, set the kitchen off.
00:56:45The laugh inside the studio was like nothing I ever heard.
00:57:00Hey, what's this?
00:57:02Fire!
00:57:03Fire to the fire!
00:57:04The famous one was Patty dealing with that Thanksgiving turkey, and that was all her.
00:57:11Huh?
00:57:12Yeah.
00:57:13Debra is wrestling with a turkey that keeps falling, and you can write that on the page.
00:57:18It just looks like an action line.
00:57:20And then when Patty Heaton does it, you look at the writers around you and go, look how good
00:57:27we are.
00:57:28Look how good we are.
00:57:38Okay.
00:57:39Yes, ma'am.
00:57:40Hi.
00:57:41My question for you is, do you guys have a favorite line?
00:57:43And if so, can you reenact it for us now?
00:57:46Favorite line.
00:57:47One favorite line.
00:57:49I have one.
00:57:50Yes.
00:57:51What did you do?
00:58:04What did you do?
00:58:06Very well done.
00:58:08I, I have a favorite line.
00:58:10It wasn't, I didn't say it, but it was said to me, and it was from nobody on here.
00:58:15It was from a day character who was in a hospital bed, and I said something to her.
00:58:20I know it.
00:58:21And she looked at me and went, you tricky, tricky white boy.
00:58:30You want to get better, you got to take your pills.
00:58:36Oh, you tricky, tricky white boy.
00:58:39What has happened to you in real life since the show's ended that you thought to yourself,
00:58:49that would make a really great episode.
00:58:51Yeah.
00:58:52Our friend, Lou Schneider, who's one of the great writers on the show, he, he tells a story
00:58:57about how he was on vacation with the family and he dropped his keys down the elevator shaft
00:59:05in, right in the crack of the elevator door.
00:59:09And he was freaking out cause it's the car keys, the house keys, everything.
00:59:12Uh, and he was really going nuts.
00:59:14And his wife said, this is great.
00:59:17Maybe you could use it on the show.
00:59:19You know that this, we already did the episode where Ray loses his ring in the, in the, in
00:59:25the thing.
00:59:26So this is not good for the show.
00:59:29This is just something that happened.
00:59:31Hey guys, my question is actually for Brad Garrett.
00:59:37When Judy took you to the dance club, you have this amazing, iconic dance.
00:59:42I wanted to ask if we can recreate it right now and boogie down a little.
00:59:45Oh, you and him?
00:59:48You in for it?
00:59:51Come on down.
00:59:52Come on down.
00:59:53All right, all right, all right, all right.
01:00:13on.
