Pripyat is an abandoned city in the Kyiv region located near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Founded in 1970 for the plant's employees (before the disaster Pripyat had a population of about 47,500), it was completely evacuated after the 1986 accident. Today it is a ghost town in the zone of exclusion which is under the strict control, and it is predicted that it will take many decades before safe living conditions can be restored.
Pripyat and Chernobyl remain symbols of the largest man-made ecological and humanitarian disaster.
