00:05You got to really love Jesus to come to church on the Sunday morning after a Saturday night at Essence.

00:25Like there's nothing else going on in New Orleans but the kingdom of God.

00:55And I believe that he deserves praise right here in this convention center.

01:21I also want to give respect and honor to my wife of 15 years, Aventer Gray.

01:54I want to give honor to Bishop Paul S. Morton, an unbelievable man of God who has impacted the kingdom globally
02:05and who has also impacted this city and this region for years and years.
02:11And I want us to give him honor one more time.
02:14Bishop Paul Morton, he came out here with his white suit for y'all today.

02:20And so I want to give honor to him and the greater St. Stephen's family because I had a part of,
02:30I had a chance to sow into that ministry as a young adult pastor for a number of years.
02:37And so I'm grateful for that.
02:39But what I'd like for you to do, if you'll go with me to Matthew chapter 16,
02:45and I'm going to start reading from the 13th verse.
02:48I'm reading from the New King James Version.
02:52So if you want to stand, you can, but you don't have to.
02:58But when Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi,
03:03he asked his disciples saying,
03:06who do men say that I, the son of man, am?
03:10So they said, some say John the Baptist, some Elijah,
03:14and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.
03:18Jesus said to them, but who do you say that I am?
03:22Simon Peter answered and said, you are the Christ, the son of the living God.
03:28Jesus answered and said to him, blessed are you, Simon Barjona,
03:33for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my father who is in heaven.
03:38And I also say to you that you are Peter.
03:40And on this rock, I will build my church.
03:45On this rock, I will build my church.

03:52Okay, so whose church is it?
03:54It's not, it's not a bishop's church.
03:56It's not a pastor's church.
03:58It's not a gospel artist's church.
04:00It is not built on personality.

04:03It's not built on who dresses the coolest.
04:06It's not built on how many followers you have.
04:09Jesus said, the church belongs to me.
04:11And upon this rock, I will build my church.
04:15And here's the best part.
04:17Everything that hell throws at you will fail.
04:22The gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
04:28Now, I need you to understand the church is not a building.
04:32Jesus didn't die for buildings.
04:33He died for people.
04:35And every time somebody says, I'm going to church, they miss the moment.
04:38You're not going to church.
04:40You're going to a building.
04:41The building is a building.
04:43You are the church.

06:11This morning, we're having church in the wild.
06:14What do you mean, Pastor John?
06:20Just turn around real quick.
06:22Other folk are in other spaces doing whatever they want to do.
06:27You know why?
06:28Because they're grown, and grown folk can do what they want to do.
06:32Nobody can force you to serve God, honor God, praise God, lift up a hallelujah, a shout.
06:40Everybody's doing what they want.
06:41You made a choice to step into this place, and what they don't know is while they're walking and we're worshiping,
06:49God shows up in the building, and everything in here is blessed because we're here.
06:55Now, I'm going to say it again.
06:59This would not be an ideal place to have a church service.
07:06If I was to take an invitation to a church, it would be a different scenario.
07:13But right now, I'm preaching over second, is it the second line?

07:26And I'm waiting for one of y'all with the wedding fans.

07:47You don't normally have a service with this many distractions.
07:52It takes somebody deeply committed to the things of God to be in this moment right here.
07:57And I want to say thank you for making God a priority on this weekend.

08:04Y'all, the last thing most of the people in the Superdome said last night is,
08:11I need to leave early so I can get to church in the morning.
08:16But y'all stayed up late, had a great time, and still got up to be here.
08:23Because there was something in you that said, God is worth the stretch.
08:28And I want to tell you that this is the exact place where Jesus was,
08:35and what Jesus was thinking about when he said, upon this rock, I'll build my church.
08:41Now, I'm going to give you a little bit of history about Matthew chapter 16.
08:45Then I'm going to give you some points.
08:47And then I'm going to let Ja'Kalen Carr come out here.
08:50And she's going to bless your life.

08:57That girl, she knows she can sing.
09:00She's anointed.
09:01And we use the word anointing too loosely because everybody's not anointed.
09:05Some people are talented.
09:07But talent does not scare a devil.
09:09No devil has ever left because somebody is talented.
09:13That's why when I was growing up, we didn't have the best singers,
09:17but we had church mothers who knew how to call on the name of the Lord.
09:22I wish we could go back to the old days where there was no Facebook.
09:26There was no Instagram.
09:28There was no social media.
09:29It was just deacons and deaconesses on the front row praying to God,
09:34believing God for miracles.
09:39So check this out.
09:40We're in this big old vast space and people are walking past.
09:46Right now we're in the middle of a worship moment.
09:49And I need you to tell three people this.

10:25Jesus in Matthew 16 is walking with his disciples and he asks them a question and it's the question
10:39that I'm going to ask you in this room.
10:41With all of the noise, with everything going on in the world, who is Jesus to you?
10:47I dare you to say it again and stand up like you mean it.

10:55He your everything?
10:57I just want to ask, is there anybody that's not ashamed of the name of Jesus in this convention center?
11:05You know, because they loud about what they believe in.
11:08They loud about what they want to do.
11:10They backing it up.
11:11They twerking.
11:12But when it comes to Jesus, people want to get quiet.

11:15If you want to be loud about your devil, I'm going to be louder about my Jesus.

11:35We interrupt this regularly scheduled Essence Festival to bring you a special announcement.
11:41Jesus Christ is in the building.
11:47And Jesus is where he's always been.
11:52In the middle of culture.
11:55Tell somebody he's in the middle of it.
11:57I need to encourage some of y'all.

12:08Tell somebody he's in the middle of it.
12:10I know you're worried because the world is going crazy.
12:15Israel and Iran on the edge of nuclear Armageddon.
12:20Russia and China currently colluding.
12:23AI will be self-aware by this time next year.
12:27Which means if you locked into that phone and locked into all this other electronic stuff,
12:33you better go back to when your grandmother had a house with no air conditioning and a bathroom on the outside.
12:39Because here's what's going to mess you up.
12:42You didn't know why you had to learn how to survive through struggle.
12:46But in this next season, you're going to understand that God was preparing you for what was coming.
12:51In the midst of a culture that is running away from God, God is saying, is there anybody that's going to put me first?
13:04Is there anybody that's going to prioritize my presence?
13:07Is there anybody that's going to lift me up?
13:09So Jesus is walking with his disciples and he said, hey, let me ask y'all a question.
13:14This for me?
13:15That's another one.
13:18Oh, this is, oh, that's thick.
13:20This is, this is paper.
13:21This is, this is, look at that.
13:26Stay on there.
13:27That's nice.
13:28All right.
13:29All right.
13:31He says, who are people saying I am?
13:35This is Jesus starting his earthly ministry.
13:39He's healing everybody.
13:41He's casting out devils.
13:42He's super popular.
13:45But he has never been about popularity.
13:48And that's where the church gets it wrong.
13:50And that's why there's so much insecurity in the church today.
13:53Pastors don't celebrate one another because they're too jealous of one another.
13:58And that's the devil.
13:59This is not a competition.
14:01There's not different churches.
14:02There's only one church.
14:04There's only one king.
14:05His name is Jesus.
14:07We are stewards.
14:08We don't own anything.
14:11I remember a pastor when I started being a lead pastor seven years ago.
14:17There were pastors that were nervous that I was coming to the city.
14:20They were like, he going to take my members.
14:22I said, I'm not taking anything because you don't have members and I don't have members.
14:27Jesus has members.
14:29And the truth is, you can't make grown folk do what they don't want to do.
14:33But Jesus said, who do men say that I am?
14:38So they started saying, I think you're a prophet.
14:41They're saying, you're John the Baptist.
14:43You're Elijah.
14:45And then he asked this, who do you say that I am?
14:47And Peter, my favorite disciple, says, you are the Christ, the son of the living God.
14:55I like Peter because Peter was a regular man who got a supernatural revelation.
15:00I don't want to talk to the deep folk that only speak in tongues.
15:04I want to talk to the people who have struggled with their faith.
15:08I want to talk to people who have had to pray and cry and fight through doubt to still believe God.
15:14I want to know if there's anybody in here like me, whoever got bad news.
15:18And even though the word says it was going to work out, there was a part of you that said, I'm not sure if it's going to work out in my favor.
15:25But you still lifted your hands.
15:27I want to talk to somebody that knows how to worship when nothing makes sense.
15:32I want to ask, is there 10 people in this place who will say, I have lifted my hands even though I didn't have the answer that I wanted.
15:43Is there anybody that can worship in trial?
15:45Is there anybody that will lift their hands when you don't get your yes?
15:55Jesus said, who do you say that I am?
15:58Peter said, you are the Christ, the son of the living God.
16:03Jesus said, yeah, you blessed.
16:05Nobody revealed that to you but the Holy Spirit, my father in heaven.
16:09And upon this rock, I'll build my church.
16:13And the gates of hell will not prevail against it.
16:16Many people think that when Jesus said upon this rock, he was talking about Peter.
16:23But Jesus was not building his church on the back of a man.
16:27He wasn't building his church on the personality of a man.
16:31Jesus built his church on the revelation that the man got.
16:36Nobody is strong enough to be the backbone of the church except Jesus.
16:43Stop worshiping people.
16:49I'm going to say that again.
16:51Stop worshiping people.
16:53I know you love your pastor.
16:54I know you love your bishop.
16:55I know you love your prophet.
16:57You are to respect them.
16:58You are to honor them.
17:00But you are never to worship them.
17:01No man is worthy of your worship.
17:05And some of us have seen that abused.
17:08You got pastors walking around here with 12 armor bearers not speaking to people.
17:13Jesus had 12 disciples and he touched everybody.
17:18So how you so amazing that nobody can touch you, nobody can speak to you,
17:22that's not a pastor.
17:24That's the Wizard of Oz.
17:25Jesus said, upon this rock, I'll build my church.
17:35Pastor John, why are you bringing up this scripture?
17:38We know that scripture.
17:40Because where we are right now is exactly where Jesus would have started building his church.
17:47He did not build his church in a safe place with a white steeple and an organ and a choir with choir robes.
17:54He said, where are the people?
17:56Put me on the block.
17:58Put me in the streets.
18:00Put me with the people that are broken.
18:02Put me with the people that are hurting.
18:04Put me with the people that have been hurt by church.
18:06Hurt by religion.
18:07Hurt by pastors.
18:09Put me with the people that have been judged by other religious people
18:12while the very people who are judging them were doing the exact same thing.
18:19Now listen, it's hard up here.
18:21So I'm going to need y'all to shout me back, okay?
18:23Because it's hard to hear.
18:26And I like the fact that I got oppressed through distraction
18:29because the body of Christ is normally not strong enough to stand in its place
18:36in a moment like this and still keep talking about Jesus.
18:39I got the wrong clothes on.
18:46I should have put a hoodie on and some sweatpants because it's time for the church to go to work.
18:52Your church clothes is not a white dress with white shoes and a white hat.
18:57Your real church clothes are some Timberland boots and some cutoff shorts and a bandana on your head.
19:04Out there in the streets with the people under the bridge.
19:08With the people that have got a needle in their arm.
19:12With the woman that's trying to leave an abusive relationship and doesn't know if God is going to protect her and them kids.
19:19We need a church that can get in the streets and be relevant there.
19:23I don't need you to shout when it's safe.
19:25I don't need you to hallelujah when it's easy.
19:27I need you to shout right now when everybody else is doing what they want to do.
19:36I need some help in here, man.

20:32They might be going wherever they want, but God is still calling them.
20:36And some of them might come and visit, and some might keep walking.

20:55So here's my question.
20:57How many people in here would say that they're saved?
21:02Throw your hands up again.
21:03If you're saved, you're like, I'm saved.
21:04I love Jesus.
21:06How many people would be honest and say there was a time when I wasn't saved?
21:11Let me ask you a question.
21:12When you weren't saved, did you go hard in the paint?
21:15How many people were good sinners?
21:19Where are the good sinners?
21:20Stand up if you were a good sinner.
21:23You stayed till the club closed, and then after the show, it's the after party.
21:27After the party, it's the hotel lobby.
21:34Listen.
21:35I need, one more time.
21:37Where were the good sinners?
21:42But something hit your spirit and said, all of this I'm doing,
21:50is empty.
21:51I need something that will anchor my soul.
21:55And somehow you went from that life to being in here on a Sunday morning.
22:02Only you know how big of a miracle that is.
22:06And if you know how much blood it took to save you,
22:10you ought to give God praise right now.

22:26Everybody acts like the church is a place for perfect people.
22:39The church is the place where imperfect people can come to be their true self.
22:44God, I don't know what to do.
22:47I don't have a clue.
22:48I don't know how to be.
22:50I'm a complete mess.
22:51I've got appetites and proclivities that don't line up with this word.
22:55I need your help, God.
22:57The church is not a museum for the spiritual elite.
23:01It is a hospital for the broken.
23:05And we need to get back to opening these doors
23:08to the people that smell like weed,
23:10to the people that just got finished with their seventh drink,
23:14to the people that still got the stamp on their hand from the club.
23:18And when they walk in, don't judge them,
23:21because you used to be right where they were.
23:28Somebody say church in the wild.
23:29So Jesus said,
23:32upon this rock, I'll build my church.
23:35Now, some of you may know this,
23:37but for those who don't,
23:39you need to know that the physical area where Jesus was standing
23:44when he quoted this scripture
23:46was the very place where the people in that region
23:51thought was the doorway to hell.
23:55Literally right below where Jesus was standing
23:58was a place called the Cave of Pan.
24:02P-A-N.
24:03P as in Paul,
24:05A as in anointed,
24:06N as in now.
24:07The Cave of Pan.
24:09Jesus was standing on the top of this cave
24:12when he said,
24:13upon this rock,
24:14I'll build my church.
24:15Why is that important?
24:16Jesus didn't choose quiet,
24:19safe,
24:20easy,
24:21perfect,
24:22anointed.
24:23He chose dirty,
24:25dark,
24:26nasty,
24:27scuzzy,
24:27broken,
24:28lost,
24:29wounded,
24:30hurting,
24:31idol worshiping.
24:32And he said,
24:32this is the perfect place
24:34to build my church.
24:36The reason why today is so amazing to me
24:39is because
24:39you can do anything you want in New Orleans.
24:42good or bad.
24:46And y'all chose to lift up Jesus.
24:49But the reality is
24:50that's not the reality of the city
24:53and that's not the reality of everybody.
24:56But it doesn't change your commitment to Jesus.
25:00What I want to encourage you to do
25:01is keep being Christ in culture.
25:05Don't move from your faith
25:07just because other people are doing what they want to do.
25:10God help you.
25:15Jesus said,
25:17I'm going to build my church right here
25:20in the midst of the trauma,
25:22in the midst of the mess,
25:23in the midst of the mixture.
25:26And right now,
25:27more than ever,
25:28we need the body of Christ to stand.
25:31We need the body of Christ to be prayerful.
25:34How many people still believe in prayer?
25:35No, I'm not talking about
25:39only praying in the shower
25:41for five minutes when you're in there.
25:42I'm talking about I pray.
25:44I pray as in the car.
25:46I pray at work.
25:47I pray on the toilet.
25:51You know,
25:52some of us got too cool for school.
25:53We stopped doing a blessing over our food.
25:55You better pray over that food.
25:58You don't know if these people wash their hands.
25:59These people nasty out here.
26:02Digging and scratching.
26:03So Jesus
26:10says upon this rock,
26:13I'll build my church.
26:14And today,
26:16with the time that I have left,
26:17I need you to understand
26:19that he's not building buildings.
26:20He's building you.
26:22And now I want to prophesy to you
26:24and to you
26:25and to you
26:26that even though you're in a room
26:29that is not dedicated to God
26:32because we're in here,
26:34God is dedicating the room to us.
26:40When you submit something to God,
26:42the whole thing is blessed.
26:44Now I want to talk to parents.
26:45Some of your kids are not doing right.
26:47Do you know that God will answer your prayer
26:49over their choices?
26:52I don't care what your kids are doing.
26:54Don't stop praying.
26:55I don't care how far away they are.
26:57Don't stop praying.
26:58And I bind that spirit
27:00that tells you
27:00you still don't have to cover them
27:02because they 18.
27:0318 is not a magic number in the Bible.
27:06I'm going to pray for my kids
27:07until they are in the will of God.
27:09I don't care if he's 43.
27:11I'm going to pray
27:12until he's filled with the Holy Ghost.
27:14I'm going to pray
27:15until my daughter is walking out
27:17the concepts of the Bible.
27:19Is there anybody that,
27:20no, I'm not stopping
27:21because culture never stops.
27:28Somebody say church in the wild.
27:32Jesus said,
27:32I want to build a church
27:34where it's raw,
27:35where it's dirty,
27:37where it's grimy.
27:38I need to build a church
27:40in a world
27:40where the very fabric
27:43of our republic
27:44is tearing at its seams.
27:45The political climate
27:49in this country
27:50is unlike anything we've seen
27:51since the early 1950s.
27:55We are in a moment
27:56where the very fabric
27:58of who we are
27:58is being attempted
27:59to be erased
28:00from books
28:02and from government,
28:04from institutions.
28:06We're in the moment
28:07where they want to minimize
28:08and hide who we are.
28:10But you can't hide us.
28:12We built this.
28:14All of this.
28:15From 1619
28:17until right now.
28:18We built all of this.
28:20We got blood in the ground.
28:22A little over 400 years.
28:24And for those
28:25who feel like God owes us,
28:27you're right in the book.
28:28Because in Exodus,
28:29there was another people
28:30that had been bound up
28:31for 400 years.
28:32And then suddenly,
28:34God shows up
28:35and in one day,
28:36everybody got free.
28:37And in one day,
28:39everybody got blessed.
28:40And in one day,
28:41everybody got paid.
28:42I don't know
28:43who this is for.
28:44Reparations don't come
28:45from a government.
28:47Reparations come from God.
28:50I need some help in here.
28:53As black and brown people
28:55in a country
28:56that hates us
28:57but needs us,
28:59I need you to remember
29:00that the government
29:01will never be able
29:02to repay.
29:04But our great-great-grandmothers
29:05who cried
29:06and our great-great-great-grandfathers
29:07who cried and prayed
29:09and were beaten
29:09left blood in the ground.
29:11And the Bible says
29:12the blood cries out
29:13from the ground.
29:14And I need you to know
29:16that we are the generation
29:17that is going to see
29:18the harvest of those tears.
29:20If there's anybody
29:21that believes it,
29:22I tell you to give God a praise.
29:32Upon this rock,
29:34I'm going to build my church.
29:35Whose church is it?
29:36It's Jesus' church.
29:40And who did Jesus love?
29:44All people.
29:46Somebody say everybody.
29:49So the days of
29:50I'm better than them,
29:51that's over.
29:52You can't judge people
29:54for where they are
29:55because you don't know
29:56how they got there.
29:58The church needs to stop
29:59judging people
30:00based on external things.
30:03Why she got them fishnets on?
30:04Why is her skirt so high?
30:06Why is she in church?
30:07Maybe that's the only outfit
30:09she had.
30:10Maybe her boyfriend
30:11beat her last night
30:12and she thought
30:12she could come to church
30:13without getting judged.
30:15Why he in the church
30:16switching and carrying on?
30:18Maybe he was abused
30:19when he was little
30:20and you don't have a clue
30:21that all he had
30:22was Jesus.
30:25And we want to send
30:26everybody to hell,
30:27but you don't know
30:28the hell they've been living in.
30:29The church
30:35needs to be quiet
30:37about judgment
30:37and be louder
30:38about love.
30:42The Bible says
30:43judgment belongs to God,
30:45but the love part
30:46belongs to us.
30:49Oh, it got real quiet.
30:51Are you saying
30:52it's okay for people
30:53to do wrong?
30:54I ain't saying none of that.
