00:00So the Deccans would rise because the Egyptians would recognize that we would have the movement of those stars every 10 days.
00:09Their week was 10 days long, going for a full month, which equals 30 days.
00:15So after that particular rise, then they would have the next set of 10, and we still have the Deccans to this day.
00:23Then it became meshed with what we know as the Zodiac, the 12 signs of the Zodiac.
00:30And so I'm going to talk a little bit about that as well.
00:32So we have the 12 signs of the Zodiac, and then we have now what we use in modern terms, the 10 planets.
00:41But initially, there were seven.
00:43So I thought it would be apropos.
00:47Let me see if you can see.
00:48Can you see that green little pointer?
00:50Can you see that?
00:51Y'all going to have to talk.
00:53Okay, thank you.
00:55So Octavia Butler is the chart we're looking at.
00:58How many of you are familiar with Octavia Butler?
01:01I hope many of you.
01:03Octavia Butler is an African or was an African-American author.
01:08She was a brilliant sci-fi writer.
01:10She was a MacArthur Fellow.
01:12She conceptualized much of what we're seeing right now.
01:18So I would actually encourage you to read her books if you have not read her books,
01:23because it may give you some insight into what to understand now.
01:29So this is her chart.
01:31She was born June 22, 1947.
01:35We believe at 6.30 a.m. in Pasadena, California.
01:39Now let me explain some of the key elements of a chart because, like I said, many of you may not be familiar with it.
01:46And I'm going to tell you something that may surprise some of you.
01:50Astrology is really not about the signs.
01:54Many of you may go like, oh, I'm an Aries, right?
01:59And I had to do that Aries, you know, that chest.
02:02Or I'm a Leo, because Leo's coming up, right?
02:05Or I'm a Cancer.
02:06The real movement and understanding of astrology starts and always has been with the planets.
02:16The planets moving through particular signs at particular times of the year.
02:22So a lot of people conceive of it as, like, you're your sun sign.
02:27You are more than your sun sign.
02:29You are more than Leo.
02:30You are more than Scorpio or Sagittarius or Capricorn or any of those other signs.
02:37And so what you're looking at is a composite picture of all that we can understand about Octavia Butler.
02:45And that brings up probably a natural question.
02:47What can astrology do for me, though, right?
02:51Rather than just talking about, you know, oh, well, your horoscope is telling you that today is a good day.
02:58It might be a good day for love, all these other things.
03:02I want to start off with a different story before I go to Octavia.
03:06There was a woman whose father killed her mother because she did not birth a son.
03:16And she actually was harassed by her sister who ascended to the throne, the throne of what we would call now England.
03:29Well, her sister dies, and then she ascends to the throne.
03:33Even though her father wanted a son, it was Queen Elizabeth I who comes upon this throne and becomes the Virgin Queen.
03:43She gets some measure of her insight and the setting up of her coronation from her astrologer, John D.
03:55So she becomes a Virgo.
03:57She becomes the Virgin Queen.
03:59So this queen is responsible for setting up an empire that has now set the tone for the language I'm speaking and perhaps that we all speak.
04:10This was Queen Elizabeth I.
04:12So when people ask me, what is the purpose of astrology, all these other people around the world have used what you said yourselves you created, we created.
04:26It is our time to start using this ancient art for ourselves.
04:33Can I get a clap with that or something?
04:35Because I think that's true.
04:39And this is the recognition of using this art and this history for us.
04:45So what else can it do for you?
04:47Astrology is more than just looking at a birth chart, which I will talk about.
04:52Astrology is also using something called horary astrology.
04:55I know that sounds wrong.
04:57But horary astrology is for the hour.
04:59And so it's using the chart for the hour to be able to determine where you can find particular things, like if you lose a watch or if you want to see if he's going to come back or she's going to come back.
05:14These are the tools that, among the tools, that others have used around the world.
05:20There's electional astrology.
05:22So you can use electional astrology.
05:24I just used it to help someone get married.
05:27Meaning that you can elect a time that's auspicious for you to be able to have your nuptials or to have your proposal or to set up your studio or to set up your business.
05:40This is something else called electional astrology that also is available, that can also have a tie into business astrology or financial astrology in terms of those practices.
05:53Then there's also mundane astrology where astrologers focus in on what's happening in the world.
06:00For instance, there are astrologers who can figure out when something may happen related to, like, presidencies or changes of empire.
06:10And we've been doing it for thousands of years.
06:14So a lot of people just think it is what they see in a newspaper or see on an app.
06:19But it's far more complicated and far more rich than that.
06:25So let's take a look at this chart.
06:27So what I want to introduce you to is that she was born on the very first day of cancer, which means she was born on the first day of summer.
06:38So she's a son in cancer.
06:41Now, because she was born near dawn, she is also a cancer rising.
06:49What's a rising sign?
06:50You remember I said earlier that the idea that we had decans rising from Egypt?
06:56So a rising sign is more determining more your life path, your life story, and it's set by the time.
07:05So when you don't know your time of birth, then the astrologer has to guess or use other work to figure out when you might have been born.
07:15That's called rectification.
07:16So here we have her rising sign because we do have a sense of her birth.
07:22So it gives us some indication of that.
07:25I'm going to talk more about that.
07:26And then her moon sign is in Leo.
07:31So a moon in Leo, because you also have a moon sign, not just a sun sign.
07:37You have a moon sign and a rising sign.
07:39And then you have all the other placements for the planets.
07:43Now, let me give you an analogy that I often give.
07:47The sun, if we were talking about like genre of literature or film, the sun would be like the genre.
07:54The broad expectations that we have for understanding what we're going to go see.
08:00So if your boo is going to take you to a horror film, you expect to be scared, right?
08:04If your boo is going to take you to a comedy, you expect to laugh.
08:09So the sun in a particular sign gives us the broad expectations.
08:14The moon sign will give you more the understanding of the characters, of the mood, of the cinematography, if we're talking about film, more the innards, the day-to-day experience.
08:26So many of us are more our moon signs than our sun signs.
08:30So your moon would be more reflective of your emotions, your physical body, other things that are happening related to your life.
08:40Then the rising sign is the plot.
08:43That gives you the sense of how your story is going to unfold, the particularities.
08:49This is how an astrologer can know particular things about you.
08:52Now, with Octavia Butler, and I mentioned her rising sign, here's her Mercury.
09:06Her Mercury is rising.
09:09What an astrologer can really know right off the bat from that, if Mercury is rising,
09:16she has a gift related to mercurial things, writing, speaking.
09:22She wasn't big on speaking because her Mercury is in the water sign.
09:26But she had talent as a writer.
09:29Because whenever you have a planet near like your ascendant or up here called your midheaven,
09:37that gives you an indication of your potential or what you might actually be drawn toward.
09:43So if your Venus is near that particular point, you might be drawn toward art, beauty, culture, those particular things.
09:52So the other thing is her moon and Leo.
09:54Now, she also had, here's her moon.
09:58She also had her Saturn and Pluto in the same sign.
10:02Octavia was very shy.
10:04The thing to know about moon and Leo is, especially when they're younger,
10:07it takes them a while to get that courage in order to have that sense of being able to push themselves forth
10:14and manifest more of what they can do.
10:17I say with a moon and Leo, I'm going to change the word I normally use,
10:22is the who the F are you moon, right?
10:25It's kind of more a moon where they're trying to figure out first who they are,
10:29then who other people are,
10:31and then who are you to tell them what to do?
10:35And so there's a defiance.
10:37And that defiance did come out with Octavia.
10:40Her mother didn't want her to kind of go into writing,
10:43wanted to be more secretary.
10:45Other people said, you know, Negroes aren't writers, honey.
10:49That's what her aunt told her.
10:51Well, she defied all that because she had the courage of her moon and Leo.
10:55And she developed that and she kept on with that courage.
11:01As a cancer rising, this is where we can get into darker parts of what happened for her.
11:06So she actually died on her doorstep from a stroke
11:11because she often was so insular as a cancer rising,
11:15maybe too protective of herself
11:18and too protective of keeping her own sacred space
11:22that she didn't allow enough people in her life.
11:25And I do believe that if she could have been a little more open,
11:29she might have been able to connect with other people
11:32and someone could have looked after her and found her sooner.
11:37May not have found her necessarily alive,
11:40but she was out there for some days.
11:43So it's actually quite sad.
11:45I could go on, but I want to pause for a second
11:48because I have about six minutes.
11:50Do you have any questions for me?
11:53Because I can go on.
11:55Nobody has any questions?
11:57Y'all all shy?
11:58Any moons and Leos here?
12:00Okay, there's a question back there.
12:01I see you.
12:03Maybe if you can come forward.
12:07I don't bite.
12:08Not on Sundays.
12:14Testing.
12:15There you go.
12:15Okay, thank you.
12:19I'm an Aquarius.
12:20February 684 is my birthday,
12:22and I don't know the time,
12:23but I was just curious what attributes you could run off of.
12:28Maybe you'll have to meet me in a meditation room
12:30because I don't have my technology up here,
12:33and we're just working with that.
12:34Okay.
12:35What times are you in the meditation room?
12:38I believe, what time is the meditation room?
12:40Does anyone know?
12:421.30.
12:421.30.
12:43Okay.
12:45So come to that.
12:46Anyone have any general questions?
12:48But thank you for that question.
12:49Yes?
12:50I am a Leo,
12:51and you described me to a T.
12:53Okay.
12:53I was shy,
12:55and I evolved,
12:56and now you can't keep me from talking.
12:59I see.
13:00Really?
13:00I'm like,
13:02I'm like, whoa,
13:03this is something.
13:04Yeah.
13:04This is something.
13:06It is.
13:06I mean,
13:07okay,
13:08one thing to know that we didn't mention in my introduction.
13:10First,
13:10I want to thank you for coming up.
13:12What's your name, Leo?
13:13My name is Penny Morton.
13:14I'm from Nashville, Tennessee.
13:15Okay.
13:17Okay.
13:17I want to say this.
13:19I got into astrology trying to disprove it.
13:23I spent 10 years kicking astrology in the teeth,
13:28because I couldn't believe it was true.
13:31I was pursuing my Ph.D. in African American studies at Temple University,
13:37and the only thing I believed in was race, gender, and class.
13:41So this idea that you could look at someone's sun sign or moon sign
13:46was what I thought was complete garbage.
13:49So I kept looking at charts, studying on my own,
13:53until I ended up an astrologer.
13:56So I call it my most successful failure.
13:58I see you with a mic.
14:00Hi, I'm Cassandra, and I am a Leo,
14:02and I'm going to piggyback off the lady that just spoke,
14:07that you described me to you also.
14:10I married my husband, and he is a counselor.
14:13So how is that that does Leo and counselors complement each other?
14:19They can.
14:20Let me explain.
14:23So everything depends on your actual independent
14:27and individual charts between your husband.
14:30Because it could be that you actually have cancer planets.
14:34Like, you know, she has a moon in Leo, but she has cancer planets.
14:39She also has Gemini planets.
14:40So your planets could hook into his chart, and then his chart, being a cancer,
14:47could hook into yours with planets in Leo.
14:50So neighboring signs actually have a lot more to share than what you might read in books and newspapers.
14:57You know, Scorpios and Sagittarius, Libras and Virgos,
15:00because they're neighboring and can share some more dimensions of it.
15:05The other thing that kind of relays deep, even though you probably are born in different years,
15:09is that you're a Leo, right?
15:11But you...
15:13Same year.
15:14So what happened in the same year is that as you were coming into birth,
15:18you went through cancer.
15:20So there's some measure of your understanding that you have,
15:24having lived through cancer in your mom's body, going into Leo.
15:28So that's kind of the workings of it.
15:31All right.
15:32Yes.
15:32Hi.
15:33My name is Yasmin.
15:35I'm Virgo-Rising Cancer Sun.
15:37So I wanted to know if you had any information,
15:41or what was your perspective on, let's say, like Saturn-Moon conjunctions?
15:49So a Saturn-Moon conjunction,
15:51what she's saying is what happens when Saturn is right in alignment,
15:57or we could say conjoined right next to the moon.
16:02So an example here, just so you get the concept,
16:06is that she has, this is Octavia,
16:09has a Saturn-Pluto conjunction.
16:13So a Saturn-Pluto conjunction could be like what she's talking about with a Saturn-Moon.
16:17Now, I have a nickname for Saturn,
16:19and I don't see any children here, so I feel comfortable saying it.
16:22I call Saturn the planet to sit your ass down, okay?
16:26And what that means is that it's not like you have to kind of be scolded and sit down.
16:31It's how you have to deal with the heaviness of yourself,
16:34both in terms of ponderous thoughts,
16:37also in terms of how you have to, I mean, you could be very serious.
16:42So with a Saturn-Moon conjunction,
16:46there can be a certain seriousness.
16:47You may have felt some measure of constraint when you were growing up or younger,
16:52either from parents or that their voices kind of were in some way critical or hard in some way.
17:00That's Saturn.
17:02And the moon represents the most sensitive aspect and part of ourselves.
17:06So this is where you might experience that particular heaviness.
17:10Does that track?
17:11Does that make sense?
17:13Okay.
17:14I think we have time for one more, or is it time?
17:19And we could go over a little bit, if you don't mind.
17:22I don't mind going over a little bit.
17:23Okay, we have some questions over here.
17:24Okay, I know a lot in, like, pop culture, people talk about Saturn returns.
17:30Can you give an overview of what that is?
17:33You're looking at it.
17:35The 30th year, I had to laugh that the Saturn return happens roughly between 28 and 30 years old.
17:45What are we celebrating?
17:46The 30th anniversary of this, right?
17:48And what Saturn return means, literally, Saturn comes back to its original position as it was when you were born.
17:57So, for instance, her Saturn, as I said, is in Leo.
18:01So the first time she had her Saturn return was roughly around 29 years old.
18:07What that means is that life has been making you for the first 29 years or 30 years of your life.
18:15But now it's time for you to make life.
18:17Your community has been investing in you for 30 years or so.
18:22Now it's going to seek some return on investment.
18:25Some way in which you are ready to kind of own your life on your own terms.
18:29One other word we can use for Saturn is authority.
18:33So are you ready to be the author of your life?
18:37That's what the Saturn return would signify.
18:39You actually can have two in an average lifetime.
18:43There really can be three.
18:43So Saturn happens that first 30 years, and then the next 30 years, if you're going between 58 and 60, you're going toward your second Saturn return.
18:53And that actually is a very important one, but I don't think we have time to go into that now.
18:57We have one more question.
18:58Hi, my name is Lydia.
19:01I'm a Pisces.
19:02Hi.
19:03I had a question.
19:04I was just, as someone who's very, very new into astrology, I wanted to know what you would recommend for someone who's just now learning, like, where to start, any helpful resources or references for someone who's wanted to begin their journey into learning more.
19:18A couple things.
19:22One, you can check out my website.
19:25Hey, I'm a moon and Leo, right?
19:27You could have seen that coming.
19:29You can check out my website.
19:31I do have classes starting in September and October, and I'm going to have a beginner's class.
19:35The other thing to know is that if you want to get a book, I would recommend a book called On the Heavenly Spheres by Helena Evelar and Luis Ribeiro.
19:50That's until I write my book, right?
19:52But that's one particular book I would definitely recommend.
19:56If you're talking about online sites, one of my favorite sites, and it's not always beginner-friendly, but you can get into more deep information, is skyscript.co.uk.
20:09And if you like listening to podcasts, then I would recommend my friend Chris Brennan, who has a podcast called The Astrology Podcast.
20:20It literally is called The Astrology Podcast.
20:22It's quite popular.
20:24So that's another place where you can find that.
20:27Well, I think, oh, I think they're about, are you about to pull me off the stage, or do we have time for one more?
20:32Wrap.
20:33I got to wrap.
20:35Well, thank you so much.
20:36I hope this was informative.
20:38Here's my information up there.
20:41I'll be in the meditation room to do some consults.
20:44All right.
20:45Thank you very much.
