00:00Lensi Vonn is in intensive care in a hospital in northern Italy.
00:04After undergoing surgery, hospital officials say that she required surgery
00:10to stabilize the fracture in her left leg sustained in the race just hours earlier.
00:17She was competing at the Winter Olympics despite rupturing an ACL in her left knee
00:22competing just nine days earlier in Switzerland.
00:25There were doubts whether she'd even make the Games, but she did.
00:28And yet the horror unfolded 13 seconds out of the starting gate.
00:34She then clipped the fourth gate with her right shoulder, lost control,
00:39and was launched into the air before coming off the course at high speed
00:43and landing on her back.
00:44There were screams heard in Cortina as she was on the snow.
00:49Medics quickly went over to treat her, and many were watching in horror and distress,
00:56Including her father and fellow competitors.
01:00And eventually she was wonced away on a stretcher, being dangled off the bottom of a helicopter.
01:06There was applause heard in Cortina as she was taken away.
01:10She initially went to a hospital in Cortina before being taken one in Treviso.
01:16And then we had that later update that she did undergo surgery.
01:21Now, the U.S. team officials are saying that she's in a stable condition.
01:26We have been hearing from the eventual winner of her event,
01:30the fellow American Breezy Johnson.
01:32I don't have anything except that her coach said that she was cheering for me in the helicopter.
01:38So I hope for the best for her.
01:41I hope that it's not too bad.
01:44And yeah, I mean, my heart aches for her.
01:46It's such a brutal sport sometimes.
01:48We have also heard from Lindsay Vaughn's sister, Karen Kildo.
01:51She says she dared greatly and she put it all out there.
01:56Lindsay Vaughn was the big star going into these games.
02:00So much focus on her.
02:02She'd only previously won one Olympic gold back in 2010.
02:06Her career has been blighted by injuries.
02:09In fact, she spent six years away from the sport before coming out of retirement last year.
02:13She is one of the most successful female skiers of all time.
02:19But could this be the end of her career?
