00:00Mars is no longer Elon Musk's top destination.
00:08In a striking strategic shift, the SpaceX founder announced that his company is preparing to build a self-sustaining human city on the surface of the moon in less than 10 years.
00:21It's a surprising move from the man long associated with Mars, but Musk says it is simply more realistic at this stage.
00:30The reason, in his view, is simple. The moon is closer, faster, and easier to reach.
00:38While missions to the moon can be launched every 10 days and take just two days to arrive, launch windows to Mars open only once every 26 months, and each journey takes around six months.
00:52That massive time gap gives SpaceX a chance to test, refine, and develop its technologies at a much faster pace on the moon before moving on to the bigger mission.
01:05Still, Musk insists that this change in direction does not mean abandoning Mars.
