00:00So, Dr. Benicia, can I make sure that she gets your information, your email address and everything so we can connect the dots so that she can apply for some funding for her business?
00:10Yes, absolutely. I actually have my team is here. They are stage left. Back in the corner, he's waving. He has a phone in his hand with a white shirt. Four people from my team are here.
00:22If you guys want to talk to somebody, we are here to help. The bank is Prime One Lending Group. Prime One Home Loans, Central One Lending. We're all the same company. Speak to someone in the corner. We can definitely help you.
00:36Thank you so much. Thank you so much. Okay, before we go, I always got to do this. And Dr. Bryant, you never know when I tell you to do this, but I cannot leave this space without you offering us a word of prayer to the people as they go on for the remainder of the festival.
00:53Thank you. Everyone, whatever your faith conviction is, would you lift your hand to our creator? Good and gracious God, I pray that you will bless us to prosper. Cut off every enemy to our prosperity. Give us strength in the area of our weakness. I pray that our children will know the success that we never see. I pray that you'll break off every generational curse and help us to create generational wealth. In Jesus' name, amen.
01:21Amen. Amen. Thank you so much. Thank you for participating in American Sesh, guys. We appreciate you so much. And we will take a class photo, y'all. Clap it up for yourselves. You have officially been Sesh-ified.

13:02baby the way she is about to bless this stage oh my god please get excited for
13:10the next segment the amazing Sarah Jakes Robbins is in the house
13:18power personified power by target please welcome to the stage the incomparable
13:23Sarah Jakes Robbins and journalist Danielle Young y'all
13:32testing hey essence how y'all doing all right yeah testing we're on okay
13:49we're gonna swap right there we go oh my gosh I'm up here with Sarah Jakes
13:57Roberts I know she's our queen this is so important Sarah not only for us to
14:07celebrate essence 30th anniversary but to celebrate you yes have y'all read power
14:14moves y'all got the audio book you love to hear Sarah reading it to you right Sarah
14:23Jakes Roberts I told you before you have done a lot to not only change the game
14:30for so many people but to personally change how we think about power and I
14:36hope y'all want to set an intention today y'all want to do that I get can I hear
14:42some noise all right today's intention we're gonna set with this conversation
14:47is to jump deep into self-discovery faith and the essence of power are you ready
14:55miss Sarah I don't know I mean are you you say you don't know well I love to start
15:01my interviews by asking beside your name and what you do who are you and what is
15:08one thing that you love most about who you are oh I am a woman on a journey of
15:16seeing herself the way that God sees her and trusting what God sees over my
15:25insecurities my fears other people's projections and one of the things I love
15:32the most about me is that I have found contentment being by myself so I don't
15:39feel the need to have a lot of validation or affirmation from other people if I can
15:46get by myself I can recenter and anchor myself that is beautiful y'all can clap
15:52for that that's good write that down in your devotionals and whatnot I really love
15:57that because so many times when you make it to a level like yours people think
16:02it's the things you know the things that you get the things that you accumulate
16:06that matter the titles but you are saying it is you you are your power yeah I
16:13resist the notion of like making it to levels because I think it makes my life
16:19about performance and I am really here to be an offering and to understand what I
16:24can give to any given moment and if I am constantly seeking level after level it
16:30puts a level of pressure on me that makes me become something instead of
16:37embracing all of embracing all of who I am so I'm really really careful even as things continue to
16:43like grow and progress of like hanging on to who I am at my core you know how do you do that how do you
16:51feel free to keep clapping I love it yes how do you do that how does one hang on to exactly who they are
16:59especially when the world is worlding things are happening if sometimes you can feel outside of
17:07yourself how do you hold on to who you are I think a lot of that has to do with giving yourself space
17:16to hear your own truth I think that oftentimes we get so busy pursuing someone else's version of who
17:24we're supposed to be or we get so busy pursuing who we think we should be based off of what we've
17:29gone through or what we have but to create a space where I can hear my own voice to create a space where
17:36I can hear my own wants my own pain my own feelings I have to create that space intentionally and that is
17:43part of understanding what my truth is so that I'm showing up in the world fully present and not trying
17:49to live up to other people's expectations ain't that real outside validation is literally nothing
17:56it is but also if you aren't careful it becomes everything and it happens so subtly that we miss
18:05the moments where we're living for the praise of other people it happens so subtly and then when we
18:10experience disappointment we have to remind ourselves that in some instances I needed the disappointment
18:16because me living up to their expectation was me already disappointing my authenticity and so when
18:23you reject me when I somehow don't live up to who you needed me to be it actually gives me permission
18:29to show up as someone who makes mistakes who doesn't do everything well and now I have the gift of
18:36authenticity yeah I love that yeah the gift of authenticity and speaking of gifts power moves is such
18:46a gift shout out to all of you who have it already and shame on you for not having I'm just playing
18:52now's your chance to make sure you get power moves but this is Sarah's latest book and it does a lot to
18:59help us understand our power and if you know anything about Miss Sarah Jakes Roberts you will know that she
19:06is very transparent about her journey um as it's a getting here and in that journey you know you did you
19:13experience things that in the Christian community would be considered bad or wrong and you were able
19:20to take it and live your life in a way that is so authentically you and powerful in that and I love
19:28that you share your story so authentically and I'm curious since we've been taught as as black women
19:35is a lot of us black women here but we've been taught about our power in a way that almost feels
19:43oppressive you know what I mean the strong black woman trope that is so tired that we're supposed
19:51to be grateful for um but there's there's some danger in that can you tell us what concepts about power
20:02that you have been able to reject especially when it comes to being a strong black woman and
20:08tell us about your journey in learning and unlearning those things well I thought for a long time that
20:16the goal was not to be this strong black woman like I don't want to live up to whatever that means
20:22I think my journey of discovering power has helped me to realize that it's less about rejecting it and more
20:29about expanding it and so I am a strong black woman I'm also a girl who's gone through trauma and can be
20:36easily triggered I am strong in my faith in some areas and I'm learning who God is in other areas
20:43and I think instead of trying to figure out which side of the fence do I play on we knock the fence
20:48down and take up the full territory of who we are and when we give ourselves to be the strong black woman
20:55and the girl who's been traumatized as well I think that we force other people to adjust to that truth
21:01as well but until we make enough space within ourselves to be strong and fragile to be beautiful
21:08and a work in progress if we don't make that space we can't allow other people to make that space too
21:14and so we talk about taking up space I want us to take up space not just with our highlight reel
21:20not just with our strengths but I want your vulnerability to take up space I want your weakness to take up space
21:26I want you to force you down the throats of every person you meet until they be realized that you are
21:33digestible in whatever format you come in so we could be on the stage at Essence we could be preaching
21:38at the Potter's house I could have on my bonnet and be on TikTok like I'm gonna force you to see
21:43every version of myself because I don't want to be limited to only what you understand
21:48I'm gonna let that sit in the air for a little bit
21:54girl we love you we love no you're you're the way that you explain things the way that you give us
22:01the agency that we already have you make us aware of it it's such a beautiful gift thank you and I told
22:09you too it's so it's I don't know about y'all but I have not been okay okay this is cute the lights are on
22:16my makeup is done I look fierce but I have not amen but I have not felt fierce right I have felt
22:24weak I have felt lonely I have felt othered I have felt betrayed I still feel those I mean clap for that
22:32I know that's right who's hurt
22:35I know I know that we're not all okay all the time and there from from hearing you speak and from
22:47reading your book there's a lesson in that of not being okay and being digestible anyhow can you tell
22:56me about a time where you were not okay and you forced us to digest you anyhow I preached with a wig cap
23:04on I mean I was preaching and my wig came off and like it was not the ideal circumstance for me
23:14I think there were layers to that because you know I felt embarrassed in a place where I'd already
23:20experienced a lot of shame a lot of rejection and so um I had to stick beside myself in that moment of
23:27vulnerability and fragility not just in the moment but in the aftermath of what happened as well when
23:33people are like talking about me and having think pieces and misjudging me being willing to say you
23:39know what I know what it was I know what it wasn't and I'm going to have to stick beside me I think is one of the
23:45moments that come to mind um it would have been very easy to say like you know I'm going to tuck my tail and
23:52hide I'm not going to show up anymore this is evidence I struggle with inadequacy so I'm like this is evidence that
23:58you don't have any business being on this platform you're not cut out for this but instead I have to trust that God
24:05can use me in whatever form I show up in even if it's not necessarily the form I want to show up in like we talk
24:11about God using us but we want God to use a specific version of ourselves but what if God wants to use your
24:17vulnerability what if God wants to use the thing that you're embarrassed by what if God wants to use the thing that you'd rather
24:23hide and being willing to say literally any part of me that you want to use I have to learn to digest
24:28that first so then I can show up in the way that allows them to see your glory and not mine
24:34yeah that's it that's getting in my feelings are y'all feeling that and you're in your hearts
24:42I know I am I'm trying to keep it together Sarah
24:45I'm curious before you came to Sarah became the Sarah that we all know and love so deeply
24:52what was a time like this is pre internet pre fame what was a time where you felt your most powerful
25:02as young Sarah
25:04I think I probably felt more powerful before people knew me than I feel now
25:10because I just after I got pregnant as a teenager and like people had given up on me I think I felt
25:16the most powerful because when you grow up as like T.D. Jake's daughter there are like all of these
25:21expectations and then when you disappoint people there aren't any expectations at all so I think I felt
25:27this freedom and liberty to show up in whatever way I wanted to show up to do what I wanted to do like
25:32I felt this freedom that I think is hard to hang on to now and so I was 23 I was going through a divorce
25:41I felt powerful going through that divorce which is why I knew I wasn't going to be nobody's church hero
25:46because I was like this divorce is the best decision I could have made for me and my children
25:51and I just felt like I was reclaiming myself in a way that may be dissatisfactory to other people
25:58but what I knew for sure was that it was leading me to become the most powerful version of myself
26:04wow I love that I really love that like the perception you have around things that would be
26:12considered bad and negative and oh my god I can't believe and you're like that's when I'm my most
26:17powerful stop that yeah I mean I don't know maybe there's something wrong with me but like
26:23something's right with you baby I um I don't know I I think that you can hit such a low point in your
26:30life that it leaves you with nothing but yourself and your truth and in those moments you could say
26:38this is going to be the thing that I allow to just turn me into nothing or I can dare to believe that
26:44there is something left and I took those shattered pieces of my life and I saw them as valuable and it was
26:52like a secret between me and God like I didn't know if anyone else saw it as valuable but I trusted
26:58that me and God saw something in it and like little by little piece by piece I feel like my life has
27:03come back together I love that yes yes sadly we have about five more minutes so I'm gonna you know make
27:12it count I know we could sit here all day with her I want to know because power has been easily given
27:24to white men unchallenged you know I know we're in a sticky time politically and I'm not gonna go there
27:33um but when it comes to being a black woman do you feel like it's fair to say we're often not given
27:42or expected to be powerful and if we are it's not in a positive light
27:51that's such a that's not a five minute question um no I have five more questions so do that one
27:59I think that yeah I mean I think that it's easy for us to try to live up to someone else's idea of
28:10what power looks like and often that's negative I think there's so many nuances culturally and
28:16historically that play a role into how we define power as black women and while I think it is necessary
28:23that we understand the context in which we are building a platform for our power sometimes I
28:31wonder if we should also make sure that we're being intentional not about what stripped us from power
28:38whether or not it was fair but how do we reclaim it what does reclamation look like and how do we
28:46define power for ourselves because if we don't define power for ourselves we'll always be looking for
28:53someone else's definition of what it means to be powerful but the truth is that power for me
28:58is different than your definition of power and each of us have a responsibility to reclaim and define
29:05what power looks like not just for our family not just for black women but on an individual level
29:11what does it mean for you to be powerful with your past with your dreams with your gift with your
29:19anointing what does make power personal and I think the more that we are able to make power personal
29:25we have the strength we need to fight the systems of oppression that may try to project their version
29:31of what power looks like on us I love that that was good right
29:36somebody write it down I need to retweet it at some point
29:41um I would love to talk a little bit about um actually no because we're running out of time
29:50and I would love for you to affirm this beautiful audience of people who are here to watch us talk
29:57because they love you so dearly um when you are in the mirror and all the stuff is off
30:03and you are maybe affirming yourself what do you say to Sarah in the mirror to settle her for the day
30:14or to even start her day and then is this and can you give that gift to these to these people
30:22I can um so it's it's loud in here and um it this is a representation though sometimes of what's going
30:33on in my mind when the day is closed there's so many thoughts so much noise so many anxieties so many
30:41fears on the inside of me that my soul can sometimes feel like this room and it can be hard to stay focused
30:49it can be hard to tap into what's true what's real what do I really need to hear
30:55and so I'm going to ask you guys to do me a favor can you put your hand on the shoulder of the person
30:59beside you man we drag our chairs up
31:05can you put a little weight on that hand
31:10hold that person
31:13let them feel for a moment
31:17no matter what noise is playing in their head and playing in their mind
31:21that they're not in it on their own
31:24that life is not as lonely they are not as misunderstood
31:30as sometimes anxiety would have them to believe
31:33if you were an extension of God's love holding their shoulder right now
31:39I want you to pour love inside of them
31:41and then I want you to lean in in a still small voice
31:46and tell that person
31:47you're going to be okay
31:49you're loved
31:55you're valuable
31:58we need you
32:01show up
32:04in the fullness of who you are
32:07fullness of who you are
32:09and God will go ahead of you
32:12that's how I affirm myself
32:16y'all just got an affirmation
32:22but also a beautiful word to take with you to believe for yourself
32:28how powerful you are
32:30give it up for Sarah Jakes Roberts
32:32and power moves
32:37y'all this is a dream to me
32:39so thank you
32:40thank you
32:40we always find each other along our different paths
32:59sometimes we even make it out the group chat

33:49and we feed each other's shine
33:50Love is all we need to make everything complete.
33:57If we try to live together and be a big.
34:02You and me are one and we've only just begun.
34:06So let's make a new beginning and have someone good for a love.
34:13Y'all, that was a word.
34:15Love is all we need.
34:17Y'all got a whole affirmation from Sarah Mrs. Sarah Jakes Roberts, y'all.
34:27How about that?
34:28Please give it up.
34:30Please give it up again.
34:33Yes, I'm going to say for my pastor, Sarah Jakes Roberts, give it up, y'all.
34:37Give it up.
34:37Give it up for Target, Daniel Young for that segment.
34:41Wow.
34:42Power moves, y'all.
34:43If you do not have the book already, do yourself a favor.
34:46Go get it right now.
34:49And if books put you to sleep, then she also has the Audible where you can actually just listen to the book.
34:55But please, y'all, do yourself a favor and get power moves.
35:00I remember someone, when we spoke at the conference, they were saying that you can look at power moves in a couple of different ways.
35:07But how about looking at it as power moves instead of just making power moves, but how God moves.
35:16Aha.
35:17Aha.
35:19Aha.
35:21Y'all having a good time?
35:22Listen, did I let you down?
35:25I told you this morning what I say.
35:27It's up on this stage, baby.
35:29We've got performances.
35:31I told you we were going to have some amazing speakers.
35:34Did I lie?
35:36Was one lie told?
35:38Have we been having a good time?
35:40Y'all got Disney ears and everything.
35:42Did you book your trips yet?
35:43I need to see flights booked to Orlando, Los Angeles, Patti, everywhere that you can find a Disney anything, Disney World, Disneyland, you take your pick.
35:54But we have got to, we've got to do some things for ourselves.
35:57We've got to bless ourselves with vacations.
35:59We've got to read some good books.
36:01We've got to tune in to more artists, especially out of New Orleans.
36:05You guys had three artists here to perform, brand new artists that you probably got first listens to.
36:11So we've got to, we've got to support y'all and love on each other and continue to affirm each other like what just happened on this stage.
36:19Y'all ready for next?
36:20What's up next?
36:21All right, coming up in a few minutes, we're talking about women's health.
36:25Ladies.
36:27Okay.
36:29We've got women's health coming up.
36:30Stick around for a panel discussion featuring a group of high-powered black female government officials.
36:35DJ Rob Nice, where you at?
36:37I'm right here.
36:38How y'all doing this afternoon, ladies?
36:40Hey, what you got for us?
36:43I got a question.
36:44Ladies, if you consider yourself a queen, let me hear you make some noise.
36:48That's what I'm talking about, baby.
36:51Give it to a queen.
36:53I got it.
36:54Give it to a queen.
36:56Yeah.
36:56The queen is hyped up.
36:57Give it to a queen.
36:58I got it.
36:58Give it to a queen.
37:00Yeah.
37:01The queen is hyped up.
37:01Give it to a queen.
37:02I got it.
37:03Give it to a queen.
37:05Yeah.
37:05Yeah.
37:06The queen.
37:07L-A-T-I-F-A-H.
37:08Come in.

49:43Black Women's Health.
49:45We've talked about things concerning your mind, your body,
49:49the inner you, the outer you, the exterior, all of the things.
49:53But right now, we're about to get into women's health,
49:55advocating for the strong Black woman sponsored by State of Louisiana.
50:01Y'all, give it up for the panel.
50:03They're coming to the stage, y'all.

50:28We're going to try to make a hard topic a fun time.
50:32We are strong Black women.
50:33But do you know that strong Black women,
50:36we have to advocate for our health.
50:38Is that right?
50:40All right.
50:41So we have a dynamic panel for you.
50:44Some bad women, okay?
50:45Black women in the legislature.
50:48So we're going to start off with none other than State Representative of Louisiana,
50:56District 101, Vanessa Caston-Lafleur.
51:00Hey, yeah, yeah.
51:15So we're going to learn to lead that throughulake.
51:19Okay.
51:19So we're planning to find the competency done,
51:20and it's to run a lot better than the candidate,
51:21so we know that people have health clinic,
51:22but we know obviously tons of patients.
51:24And if we have a full growth,
51:26we're pem physicians who can adjust the performance,
51:27which takes a lot of parents' ability.
51:28Also we've been trying to maintain that additional work feature,
51:29which0 of our staff came from later dimensional post,
51:31they were coming up to tomorrow.
51:32So we're going to travel today.
51:33.
52:03.

53:33.
54:03.
54:33.
55:03.
55:33.
56:03.
56:33.
57:03.
57:04.
57:05.
57:06.
57:07.
57:08.
57:09.
57:10.
57:11.
57:12.
57:13.
57:14.
57:15Black women save everybody.
57:18We do.
57:19We do.
57:20When we create policy, we're thinking about not just our family and our people in our home.
57:26We're thinking about the Sunday school teacher, the neighbor across the street.
57:30We're thinking about, so when we implement policy around health, we have to keep our communities healthy and thriving.
57:37And so our organization is strictly focused on the priority for black women's health.
57:42And I'm super excited to say.
57:44.
57:45.
57:46.
57:47.
57:48.
