00:54You're going to have to get this person to stop.
00:59You're going to have to get this person to stop.
01:05I'm going to have to get this person to stop.
01:09Fire, fire, fire.
01:10Health is on the way, but what's on fire?
01:13Okay.
01:14Where in the house?
01:16Everyone.
01:18Okay, get everyone out. Is anyone hurt?
01:30539, 550, 506.
01:33We've got a possible structure.
01:35The female states the husband is still inside.
01:39The call came out.
01:42Luckily, I was about a mile away.
01:45It wasn't the first house fire that I've been in.
01:49This is the first fire where I've had people trapped inside.
01:53Okay, now we're hearing reports of four subjects unaccounted for inside the house.
02:00As patrol officers, we're always out and about,
02:03and we always arrive before the fire department.
02:06As Officer Turk and I were going to the fire,
02:10I could start smelling the smoke pretty quickly.
02:13There's flames shooting out of the windows.
02:15I had never seen anything like that.
02:17Copy.
02:19Hey, get back. Get back.
02:21Get back. Is there more in there?
02:23Yes, yes, yes.
02:25Let's go, please.
02:26Something about hearing, you know, a child is inside.
02:27The hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
02:29Officer Devin Hunt joins Officers Turk.
02:33Hey, get back. Get back. Get back. Is that boy in there?
02:37Yes, yes, yes.
02:42Come out there in there. We'll have three kids inside.
02:48Police!
02:49Something about hearing, you know, a child is inside.
02:53The hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
02:56Officer Devin Hunt joins officers Turk and Buchay at the scene.
03:00With the fire department still five minutes away,
03:03it's all hands on deck to rescue the trapped family.
03:07When I heard that there were kids trapped,
03:10I knew that I was going inside, and I knew that would be dangerous,
03:14but I knew there was no way that I could not go in and try and get them out.
03:26Where are they?
03:29Okay. Two more at least.
03:31My kids are going to go!
03:34All right, well, they're saying there's kids inside.
03:36My first instinct was to try and find a way towards the back of the house,
03:40and Officer Turk quickly followed behind me into the garage.
03:48You're good, you're good.
03:55Police! Come here!
03:57The first thing we could hear was a man screaming.
04:03We're all here!
04:05Get down! Get down on the ground!
04:07We're all here! We're all here!
04:10We're all here!
04:12You good?
04:13Yeah.
04:14We're all here!
04:16The smoke was so thick.
04:18When I first went in and took a deep breath of that smoke,
04:23I mean, it was like somebody punched me in the throat.
04:27Get down!
04:28539.
04:30Advise, FD, you got heavy black smoke.
04:33What the f***?
04:35In addition to the man,
04:37officers have been told there are three children trapped inside.
04:41I was scared.
04:46I was really worried for them.
04:52Get down!
04:55Come here!
04:57Come here!
04:58Where is he?
05:00Once I kicked that door in,
05:02it helped ventilate the house.
05:05Obviously, heat rises and, you know, cold air falls.
05:09And it just created a nice flow underneath
05:12to crawl as low as I can.
05:15You're good. Stay low.
05:17It's a plus and minus in a way
05:19because now you're feeding the fire oxygen.
05:22We're all here!
05:25Hey, Clip!
05:25You get a kid!
05:30I'm sorry!
05:31Stop it!
05:35Help me lift the guy!
05:37Here.
05:41The first thing I saw
05:43was the man laying on the ground on his back.
05:46Looks like he's unconscious.
05:48Stop it!
05:49Where is he?
05:49Right here.
05:50Hold on.
05:51There's a girl here.
05:53Lift him up.
05:54No, lift him up.
05:55She's underneath him.
05:57Hold on.
06:02Hang on.
06:04Come here, sweetie.
06:04Sit up.
06:05Try and sit up.
06:07Hang on.
06:08She's wedged.
06:12I looked up and ended up seeing
06:14the guy that was screaming behind them.
06:16You climb over here.
06:20Climb over him.
06:21Climb over him.
06:22Go that way.
06:22Go that way.
06:23Go that way.
06:23Go that way.
06:25Are you stuck under him, honey?
06:26We got a girl.
06:27We got a girl.
06:29Get down.
06:31Underneath the mail.
06:33Oh, it's hot.
06:34Do that.
06:35Girl down.
06:39Go on, Todd.
06:40Okay.
06:40Hey, what's up?
06:50What's up?
06:54Officer Timothy Shingleton
06:56arrives next.
06:57I'm here inside still.
07:01You made that little girl.
07:04Guys, where are we at?
07:06Where are we at?
07:08Being a father myself,
07:09whenever kids are involved
07:11with anything,
07:12in my opinion,
07:13they're their first priority.
07:15That's my main focus
07:16as soon as I get there.
07:20Can I take you?
07:21Yeah.
07:21There's definitely
07:23a sense of fear
07:24going into the fire,
07:26but I didn't really
07:27take a lot of time
07:28to think about consequences
07:29or anything like that.
07:30I just wanted
07:31to get inside and help.
07:33Is there anyone else
07:39in here?
07:39Yes, one right here.
07:41Get her out.
07:41Get her out.
07:45Here.
07:46Give me her.
07:46Get her out.
07:47Give me her.
07:47No, this way.
07:49This way.
07:49There's that door
07:50right here, guys.
07:51There's a back door
07:52in the door.
07:53Hold it.
07:54Can we get her?
07:56Yes.
07:57Hey, we're in the door.
08:00I got it.
08:02I got it.
08:06Officer Shingleton
08:07rescues the girl
08:09who was pinned
08:09under the unconscious man.
08:13I got it right now.
08:15I got it.
08:18It was definitely amazing
08:20to reunite her
08:21with her mom.
08:23The family was crying
08:25and just overwhelmed
08:27that we were able
08:28to free her
08:29from the situation
08:30that she was in.
08:33But my mindset
08:34went back to,
08:35I'm not sure
08:36if my partners
08:36are still inside.
08:37I don't know
08:38if they've freed
08:38the other two.
08:39So I kind of just
08:41head straight back
08:41to the same door
08:42that I had originally
08:43made entry into.
08:44Can we get him?
08:46He's pinned with his foot
08:48right there.
08:52He's stuck.
08:54Hey, bro,
08:55it's falling down.
08:58We got to move.
08:59The flames are starting
09:02to come close to us.
09:03The environment
09:04is getting hotter.
09:05The smoke
09:06is getting thicker.
09:07We don't have
09:08the right equipment
09:08on to stop us
09:10from burning.
09:13I don't know
09:14how to save
09:14those two individuals
09:15and how to get
09:16out of it alive.
09:17Sheriff, turn this way.
09:19Sheriff, we got to go.
09:20Sheriff, we got to go.
09:21Officers from the
09:32Farmington Hills
09:33Police Department
09:34are desperately
09:35trying to rescue
09:36a family of eight
09:37from their burning home.
09:39In the chaos,
09:40it is unclear
09:41how many people
09:42are still inside.
09:46I'm very stubborn.
09:48It's not always
09:48a good thing,
09:49but in that instant,
09:50it was like,
09:51I'm not going
09:52to take a loss.
09:53We need to get
09:54these individuals out
09:55no matter what.
09:57506, we're extracting
09:58him now.
10:01We're getting him out.
10:03Here.
10:08You try to get
10:09a hold of his hands.
10:10Sweaty.
10:11Your palms are sweaty.
10:13You can't really
10:14fully stand up
10:15because of how
10:16thick the smoke is.
10:19You got him?
10:20You got him?
10:22You got him?
10:23You got him?
10:23You got him?
10:23You got him?
10:24Almost.
10:25Come here,
10:41up here.
10:42Come to me.
10:43He's unconscious.
10:44No, he's not.
10:44He's up.
10:45Come on.
10:46Crawl, crawl.
10:47Crawl.
10:47Crawl, crawl, crawl.
10:48I go back in the takeover
10:55and I grab onto his wrist
10:58and I start feeling him move
11:01and I'm blown away
11:03because he's been
11:03unconscious for so long
11:04and seeing him sit up
11:06onto his arms
11:07and start crawling,
11:08I didn't think that
11:08that was ever going to happen.
11:10Crawl, crawl, crawl.
11:11Is that the last man?
11:13Two guys.
11:15How many more people in there?
11:17Two small guys.
11:18Where?
11:18How many family members
11:19total in the house?
11:20Three men.
11:21Three men?
11:22Two women.
11:23Two women?
11:24Two, two, two guys.
11:25Two children?
11:28506.
11:29We have two men in the back.
11:30There should be one man
11:31in the front,
11:31two women,
11:33three children total.
11:35We have two men with us.
11:36How do you count?
11:37Guys, you guys got to get up.
11:39You guys got to get up.
11:40Walk away from the house.
11:41Anyone still in here?
11:44The newborn baby
11:45has already been rescued
11:47from the home.
11:51Hey!
11:52Jacob, did you say you?
11:53Yeah.
11:54All right, we're good here.
11:55You guys need to get out
11:56of there, bro.
11:58Officers think they have
11:59everyone out of
12:00the burning building.
12:02Get out.
12:03Let's close this door
12:04and stop the van.
12:07After pulling everyone out,
12:08you start to go into
12:10okay, are my partners safe?
12:12Are my coworkers safe?
12:14The fire department
12:15arrives on scene
12:17to tackle the blaze.
12:19Hey!
12:19We need a head count!
12:21We need a head count!
12:24One more!
12:26One more what?
12:27One more man?
12:28One more man?
12:30Just when you think
12:31you're out of danger,
12:33something else comes up.
12:35506 family saying
12:37there's one more male
12:38approximately 20 years old
12:40near the back of the house.
12:42Okay, are we sure
12:43we got everyone
12:44out of the house?
12:45One finally 20-year-old man
12:47left in the house.
12:48It was definitely
12:49panic-inducing.
12:51You know, I started thinking,
12:52what if we hadn't found
12:53all of them?
12:54That guy?
12:55Like, hey!
12:57This guy!
13:00Everybody out?
13:01Everybody out!
13:02Yes, we're good!
13:03We're good!
13:03We're good for homeowners.
13:05There's nobody
13:05guys in the house.
13:06Everybody is out of the house.
13:08Copy.
13:09412 Stain.
13:09All occupants
13:10are out of the house.
13:11Everyone is out?
13:12We're not up.
13:14506 to remaining
13:15PD units.
13:16Return to the front yard.
13:17It was a huge sign
13:21of relief
13:21that we did not
13:22miss anyone.
13:24We got everyone out
13:25and all of my coworkers,
13:27all the officers
13:28were safe outside.
13:32We started to look
13:33into getting medical aid
13:35for everyone.
13:37Hold on, hold on, hold on.
13:39Is she good?
13:39She's still breathing.
13:41I was standing
13:42with the mother
13:42and she had fainted
13:43and I was trying
13:45to wake her up.
13:46Get her on the side.
13:47You're good, you're good.
13:48You're okay.
13:49You're okay.
13:50You're good.
13:50You're okay.
13:51You're okay.
13:52You're good.
13:52You're good.
13:53You're good.
13:56Look, look, look.
13:58Look, right there.
13:59Right there.
14:00She's right there.
14:01Look, right there.
14:02Everybody's okay.
14:04Everyone's okay.
14:05Okay?
14:06I believe the mother
14:07did not realize
14:08that her daughter
14:09was out of the house.
14:10She was still
14:11in complete panic
14:12and shock.
14:13Can you try standing?
14:14Come here.
14:14Come here.
14:15Stand up, stand up.
14:16Awesome.
14:18There's a baby.
14:19There's a baby.
14:21I couldn't begin
14:23to imagine
14:23how traumatic
14:24this was for the family.
14:25I couldn't imagine,
14:26you know,
14:26having a child
14:27and not being able
14:28to help them
14:29out of the house.
14:31I'm just glad
14:31that we were there
14:32and able to,
14:33you know,
14:34make a difference
14:36for them.
14:38All family members
14:40are accounted for.
14:41Does anyone know
14:44what started the fire?
14:46Were you all sleeping
14:47and it was just a fire?
14:48Do you know
14:49where it started?
14:50I saw the fire
14:51in the living room
14:51and saw it at night.
14:53The family was asleep
14:54when the fire had started.
14:56The cause of the fire
14:58remains unknown.
14:59We have a headcount.
15:00Everyone's out, right?
15:01Every single person's out.
15:03You okay?
15:06I'll definitely
15:09never forget
15:09this incident.
15:11It was really
15:11an incredible job
15:12by everybody
15:13that was involved.
15:18I remember
15:19I was coughing
15:20like nonstop
15:21and one of the firemen
15:23was like,
15:24I think you guys
15:24might need to get
15:25checked out
15:26because I could barely
15:27stay a sentence
15:29without nonstop coughing.
15:31So we ended up
15:32getting loaded
15:33into the ambulance
15:34and taken to
15:35Corwell Farmington Hills Hospital
15:37and inevitably
15:40getting intubated
15:41and requiring
15:42breathing treatment
15:43and medical aid
15:45for a few days.
15:47There was some
15:48scar tissue
15:49built up in my lungs
15:50but luckily
15:51recovery is doing good.
15:53I'm back to full duty.
15:55The family has recovered
15:57and everyone's safe.
16:059-1-1 emergency.
16:17I'm calling to report
16:18a domestic dispute.
16:21You can hear
16:22young children
16:24screaming and crying.
16:25I went and knocked
16:26on the door
16:26and you can clearly
16:27hear people screaming
16:29and fighting
16:29in the background
16:29and children screaming.
16:30Are those of the male
16:32and the female
16:32aren't they?
16:33It is.
16:34Yeah, it is.
16:37Multiple officers
16:39from Oceanside PD
16:40are dispatched
16:41to the location
16:42of the 9-1-1 call.
16:46Domestic violence
16:47is a frequent call
16:49that we get.
16:50We can't get complacent
16:51if we get there
16:53and we don't assume
16:54the worst.
16:55We might be surprised
16:56at what we're going
16:57to run into
16:57but if we assume
16:58the worst
16:59then at least
17:00we're somewhat prepared
17:02to take action
17:03as opposed to
17:04trying to play catch up.
17:05A second call
17:07comes in.
17:089-1-1 emergency.
17:10I think someone
17:11just got shot.
17:12How many shots
17:13did you hear?
17:14Like five,
17:15like five,
17:15like five,
17:16like five.
17:16There's a shooting
17:17involved,
17:18children involved
17:18and a person down.
17:20The people,
17:21my town,
17:22needs me
17:23in that moment.
17:24We have to engage.
17:279-1-1 emergency.
17:35I think someone
17:36has got shots.
17:37How many shots
17:39did you hear?
17:39Like five,
17:40like five,
17:40like five,
17:41like five.
17:42We have what's called
17:42live 9-1-1 in the car.
17:44You can actually
17:44listen to the caller.
17:47I'm going to have
17:47to get off the phone
17:48with you.
17:48I hear a lady screaming.
17:50Okay.
17:57Sergeant Schickel
18:01and Officer Mulder
18:02are the first on scene.
18:16As I get to the door,
18:18one of the children
18:19comes out.
18:21She's in the back.
18:22The front door
18:27is wide open.
18:36We actually
18:37entered the bedroom
18:37where the victim
18:38was lying on the ground.
18:41Ma'am?
18:47No, Paul,
18:48she's very warm.
18:49We're good.
18:50We're going to need
18:50to pull her out.
18:52her pupils
18:55were dilated.
18:57She wasn't breathing.
18:58Yeah, it's
18:58that.
19:00It looks like
19:01brain matter
19:01on the other side.
19:02Yes.
19:03Yeah.
19:04It looks like
19:05entrance in the cheek
19:05and out the side.
19:09She had a head wound
19:10that was significant.
19:13She had a couple
19:13of other injuries
19:15that I noted.
19:16They appeared
19:17to be gunshot wounds.
19:20It's a hurt head wound.
19:22The woman is
19:25Kimberly Foster,
19:26mother of four,
19:27including a four-year-old boy.
19:29They saw their mom get shot,
19:47saw her on the floor.
19:49Definitely going to be
19:50in crisis.
19:52We need to remove them
19:53from the scene
19:54for their own safety
19:56and well-being.
19:58That little boy
19:59that was in that room
20:00is going to remember
20:01the last time
20:02he saw his mother
20:03lying on the floor.
20:05And that's going to,
20:06that's going to be with him
20:07for the rest of his life.
20:09I've got four, five casings
20:15over here.
20:17One, two, three, four, five.
20:18I see five here.
20:20Two more in the cabinet.
20:23One, two, three, four, five,
20:25six, seven, eight.
20:27In the corner, of course.
20:29One, two, three, four, five.
20:31And those are
20:32four, five, six, seven.
20:34Before there's a shooting,
20:35we can have a couple of casings.
20:38In this case,
20:39there were eight,
20:40all directed at her.
20:43I would argue
20:44that there was some level
20:45of hatred,
20:46at least in that moment,
20:47towards her,
20:48and he was going
20:49to make her pay for it.
20:50Hey, can we get
20:51suspect name,
20:52information, date of birth?
20:53Suspect, first,
20:54historian,
20:55black male,
20:56we had other officers
21:02who interviewed
21:03victims' children,
21:05and they actually identified
21:07who the suspect was
21:08by name.
21:09Dorian Larkin.
21:12Kimberly Foster's neighbors
21:14say she and Larkin
21:15had a volatile relationship.
21:18He brought extreme violence
21:19in front of children.
21:21He needs to be brought in.
21:22Number six.
21:23We did receive information
21:31that he was driving
21:33a silver passenger car.
21:35With the technology,
21:37there's license plate reader cameras
21:39really everywhere.
21:40You can't really drive
21:41without hitting
21:42one of these cameras.
21:43It's harder to hide.
21:48At that point,
21:49we have a hit
21:50at a particular location.
21:51and came back
21:53to Temecula, California,
21:5530 miles away.
22:00Riverside County
22:01Sheriff's deputies
22:02engage in a pursuit.
22:04They lead Larkin
22:05back within city limits,
22:07where Oceanside Police
22:08can pick up the chase.
22:09Larkin won't pull over.
22:23Officer Cisneros
22:24joins the chase.
22:25We were alerted that
22:38he's going southbound
22:39on the 15.
22:40Deputies are in pursuit of him,
22:42and he's coming back
22:43to Oceanside.
22:45He's doing the same turns,
22:47he's doing the same things,
22:48and he's buying time
22:50for himself
22:51to plan his next move.
22:53I don't know
22:56how much gas
22:56he has in his car
22:57or how many rounds
22:59he has in his gun,
23:00but something's
23:02going to happen.
23:04You know,
23:05they might be coming
23:05back here
23:06to get a United States
23:0776 college
23:09for a potential
23:10spiked appointment.
23:11Officers get ahead
23:28of the chase
23:28to set up stop states.
23:30Southbound P38.
23:43Southbound P38.
23:45We're pursuing a murder suspect
24:06who is still armed
24:07with a handgun.
24:08It's still very dangerous.
24:09The only appropriate
24:13thing to do
24:13is stop him
24:14as quickly as possible
24:15before he can hurt
24:16anyone else.
24:29The community
24:30is at risk.
24:31We need to catch this guy.
24:33The murder suspect's vehicle
24:52runs straight
24:53over the stop sticks,
24:55but the chase
24:56isn't over.
24:57He hit some spikes
25:20and he continued
25:22pretty fast.
25:24At that point,
25:25I'm now number two
25:26in the pursuit.
25:27trying to maneuver
25:28my way around
25:29to put myself
25:30in the best position
25:31if he did crash
25:32and foot bail.
25:50Larkin pulls his
25:51damaged car
25:51into a shopping
25:52center parking lot.
25:57The suspect, Larkin,
26:22was coming out
26:23out of the driver's seat
26:24and had the gun
26:25in his right hand
26:26kind of shooting it
26:27across his body
26:28like this
26:29at us.
26:33That front door
26:34of his car
26:36pops open
26:37and I'm looking
26:39right at him.
26:40I see his face
26:41and he's
26:41squaring me up.
26:45I'm hearing
26:45the gunshots go off.
26:47That's when it
26:53kind of slows down
26:54and those gunshots
26:56get pretty muffled,
26:57but I can see
26:58the orange flashes
26:58right in front of me.
27:00It was just
27:00kind of just
27:02just survive
27:04at that point.
27:05Don't get hit.
27:06That's when I get up
27:16on my gun
27:16and I start
27:17shooting at him.
27:20We have to
27:21engage violence
27:21not because we want
27:23to, but because
27:23we have to.
27:25Yeah, I won't
27:26hesitate to bring it.
27:28Hang on!
27:29Getting shots fired.
27:32Oh, yes.
27:32Watch your crossfire.
27:33We don't have
27:35like night vision
27:35or stuff like that,
27:36so I don't know
27:37if he gets hit or not.
27:41Larkin abandons
27:42his car
27:42and flees on foot.
27:45Now we're going
27:46from a closed
27:46shopping center
27:47to occupied homes,
27:49so now the immediate
27:50threat is,
27:51is he going to break
27:53into somebody's home
27:53and then are we
27:54going to have
27:54a barricade
27:55hostage type situation?
27:57And too keen,
27:57it looks like he's
27:58been running
27:58toward gold.
28:01Running towards gold.
28:03I need up here
28:04off-range
28:05or what?
28:05Watch your crossfire.
28:08Yes.
28:10They're all
28:11in front of
28:11the street floor.
28:13Our own SCSO,
28:14deputies, okay?
28:18Oh, yeah,
28:18are you okay?
28:19Can I hear you?
28:19Okay, I'm okay.
28:22There's a barricade
28:23for a barricade.
28:26Go.
28:27Watch crossfire,
28:28they need to come
28:29in east dock.
28:29Lock that off.
28:30Yeah, I'm right here.
28:33Sergeant.
28:34Suspect,
28:35put your hand
28:36to your side.
28:37Officers close in
28:39and surround Larkin,
28:40who is lying
28:41in the middle
28:41of the road.
28:43Hey, grab a shield.
28:44Grab a shield.
28:46Hey, hand to your side.
28:48Gunning his right hand.
28:49Hey, gunning
28:49his right hand.
28:52He is on the ground,
28:53laying on his back
28:54and not moving.
28:56I'll make you see
28:58him lead up.
28:59All right.
29:00Ready?
29:01Your hands.
29:02Ready.
29:03All right, here we go.
29:04Where are we going?
29:04Where are we going?
29:04Where are we going?
29:06Let me put on the radio
29:07where I was going.
29:07Where are you going?
29:08Where are you going?
29:08Okay.
29:18As we started to walk up,
29:22you definitely could see
29:23a handgun in his right hand
29:25right at his head.
29:26It was my belief
29:38that time
29:39he had inflicted
29:41his own gunshot
29:42to himself.
29:43Good boy.
29:44That's CSO.
29:45That is okay.
29:46Oh, Jesse Ferguson.
29:48The deceased subject
29:51is identified
29:52as Dorian Larkin.
29:54Once we confirmed
29:55that he was dead,
29:56I won't say
29:56it brings me back down,
29:58but now we know
29:59that the threat
29:59is neutralized.
30:01Yeah?
30:01Yes.
30:02I mean,
30:04the biggest thing
30:04is he's not a threat
30:05to officers anymore.
30:07So I fired?
30:08You did?
30:09He tried to kill
30:18a lot of people
30:19on scene.
30:20He's shooting at the police.
30:29He's shooting at the badge.
30:30I don't take it personal.
30:31At the same time,
30:33people didn't get it put
30:33to justice.
30:35Him being dead
30:36on the ground,
30:37he decided that
30:37for himself
30:38and he ended
30:39on his terms.
30:41I think the most
30:42significant thing
30:42that stands out here
30:44is the violence
30:45in front of children
30:46because that's pretty rare.
30:48The child that
30:49walked me into the apartment,
30:51you could clearly
30:51see the sense of urgency
30:53to help his mom,
30:55but there was nothing
30:56we could do.
30:57That family's going
30:58to be devastated.
30:59Those children
30:59are going to be devastated
30:59for the rest
31:00of their life.
31:11Three, two, one.
31:15And there they go!
31:17The Skyway 10K
31:19is underway.
31:21The annual Skyway 10K
31:23race is taking place
31:25across the iconic
31:26Skyway Bridge
31:27between Terracia
31:28and St. Petersburg.
31:31The bridge's
31:32southbound lanes
31:33will be free-flowing
31:33and open to traffic,
31:35but the northbound lanes
31:36will be closing
31:36at 3.30 a.m.
31:38and will reopen
31:39at 11 a.m.
31:40You're looking at
31:41anywhere from
31:417,000 to 8,000 runners
31:43coming northbound
31:44across that bridge
31:45over the course
31:45of several hours.
31:47Sergeant Carter
31:48and Trooper Shuck
31:50from the Florida
31:51Highway Patrol
31:52are stationed
31:53at the I-275
31:55northbound toll plaza.
31:57I am the closest
31:58to the race participants,
31:59so if anything's
32:00going to happen,
32:01the last person
32:02they're going to get to
32:03is me.
32:05Everybody was having
32:06a good time,
32:07and, you know,
32:08it was getting
32:08towards the end
32:09of the race.
32:11Steve, we just had a car
32:12come running
32:13through the barricades
32:13down here at 19 and 41.
32:20Hines and all newsy
32:21copy about the silver car.
32:244-10-4.
32:254-10-4.
32:26Came over the radio
32:28and said that a vehicle
32:30had broken through
32:31the detour
32:32and was traveling
32:33northbound
32:34in the closed section
32:35of the roadway.
32:39On the south side
32:40of the bridge,
32:41a driver has smashed
32:43through the barricade
32:44and is speeding
32:45toward the runners.
32:46It's going to be a silver
32:51BMW northbound.
32:52I think she's,
32:53I don't know what she is,
32:54but she's not stopping.
32:56I was worried
32:57because this hasn't
32:59happened before.
33:00We have now people
33:01on a bridge,
33:03and they have nowhere
33:04to go if a car
33:05comes through this.
33:06She's well in excess
33:09of 100 miles an hour
33:10northbound.
33:13Tony and Alan,
33:15did you start
33:16heading that way too?
33:17I'm heading up there
33:19right now.
33:20There were still
33:20thousands of people
33:22still on that bridge,
33:23and so I said,
33:24Tony, Alan,
33:25go stop her.
33:25I just accelerate
33:31as fast as I can
33:32to go southbound
33:33to try to intercept
33:34the car coming northbound.
33:35I want to get
33:36as far as away
33:37from the bridge
33:38as possible
33:38because I want
33:40to have enough time
33:41to do whatever
33:42I need to do
33:43to stop the car.
33:45Signal 14,
33:45I've lost visual on her.
33:47She's well in excess
33:48of 100.
33:48I can't even see her anymore.
33:50She's probably just
33:50about to the toll plaza.
33:52At that point,
33:53you get a little bit
33:54of a knot
33:55in your stomach
33:55you get,
33:56you know,
33:57the hairs on the back
33:57of your neck
33:58stick up
33:58and you're thinking,
34:00okay,
34:01what's going on?
34:02This is not normal.
34:05Officers station themselves
34:06in front of the toll plaza
34:08and try to get
34:09the driver to stop.
34:11Silver BMW 2 door
34:12and elderly white female
34:13mid-aged white female.
34:18She's coming.
34:19She's coming.
34:20She's coming.
34:21It's going through your mind.
34:33What's the intentions?
34:36A possible terrorist attack
34:37does play into it.
34:40Is she going to plow
34:42through the runners
34:42and, you know,
34:43try to hurt and kill people?
34:44We didn't know at the time
34:45and that's why
34:46it was so critical
34:47to stop her.
34:50They're going,
34:51child.
34:52It's 100.
34:55When she hit the toll plaza,
34:57she was roughly
34:58about a half mile
34:59from where the runners
35:00actually started running.
35:01The suspect driver
35:02is coming up behind them.
35:04They're running
35:05in the opposite direction,
35:06so it's not like
35:07you could even see this coming.
35:09There's a wall
35:10and then there's a wall
35:11and then there's water.
35:12There's nowhere
35:13for them to go.
35:15Even if somebody
35:15at the tail end
35:16started screaming,
35:18the people in the middle
35:20wouldn't know
35:20anything about it.
35:27Watching her
35:27coming past
35:28that second checkpoint
35:29there with those
35:30other officers,
35:31you now realize
35:32that you're going
35:33to have to take
35:34some sort of action
35:35to get this person
35:37to stop.
35:43Bye.
36:06Bye.
36:10Bye.
36:41I can't get out.
36:50You okay?
36:51I can't get out.
36:52You okay?
36:53I can't get out.
36:54All right.
36:55Come on.
36:56Come on.
36:57Come on.
36:58Come on, Tony.
36:59She's all right?
37:00Here.
37:01Come on.
37:02You all right?
37:03Come on.
37:04Set her down.
37:05Come on.
37:06Come on.
37:07You don't get down.
37:08Before you don't drive into the tower.
37:12After she goes through the toll plaza, she encounters Sergeant Carter, who's directly in front of me.
37:17She kind of veers around him.
37:19In my mind, I'm thinking to myself, I'm the last one.
37:24Slow her down, block the road, be an obstacle, force her either to stop or veer off.
37:32It was just within those last seconds that I realized she wasn't going to stop.
37:37And then that's when I pretty much braced for impact.
37:47Don't initially have pain, because I have all that adrenaline going on.
37:52But I wanted to get out of the vehicle, because of course, you know, your next concern is, is
37:56the car going to catch on fire?
37:58Come on.
37:59Come on.
38:00Stop.
38:01She's right here.
38:02Stop.
38:03Realizing that she did stop.
38:05You kind of have that, you can just breathe a little bit, but it's not the end.
38:10She's good.
38:25I'm good?
38:27No.
38:28She's good.
38:29Oh.
38:30The, the, the, the, the trooper you just hit.
38:33I need to talk to you guys, um, if you're real.
38:36Wasted.
38:37I swear to god, you assholes.
38:41Get on your stomach right now.
38:47Right behind your back.
38:48Right behind your back.
38:49Don't harass.
38:50When I arrived on scene, within a few minutes of the crash occurring, Tony's vehicle was
39:11still on the roadway, devastating damage to the vehicle.
39:15Tony was already being treated by emergency medical personnel.
39:19The suspect's vehicle, again, devastating damage to that vehicle as well, had spun out
39:25along to the shoulder.
39:28Trooper Shuck sustained a concussion, two herniated discs, and a tear in her back, leaving her
39:34with lifelong injuries.
39:36We are not trained to go head on with any vehicle.
39:42And that was not my intention that day.
39:44My intention was to get her to slow down or to get her to swerve off and stop.
39:50The crash was not the intent.
39:52The crash was her choice.
39:56She struck me.
39:57The suspect, Kristen Watts, sustains a broken ankle in the crash.
40:03After stating she suffers from mental health issues, Watts pleads guilty to driving under
40:10the influence, with property damage and personal injury, and fleeing or attempting to elude law
40:16enforcement.
40:17She's sentenced to 10 years in prison and four years probation.
40:21I don't even think she knew what she was doing.
40:26Her level of intoxication was over three times the legal limit.
40:33A head-on collision is probably the deadliest collision to get any vehicle to stop.
40:40Ever since I've been in law enforcement, I carried my grandmother's Bible.
40:46My grandmother, she was like a second mother to me.
40:54When my mom was at work, she took care of me.
40:57I think I had a guardian angel.
41:00I hope it was her.
41:01I think it was her.
41:05Following Officer Shuck's intervention, the Skyway 10K event finished without incident.
41:11Tony Shuck is a hero.
41:14The innocent people that were there didn't even know it occurred.
41:18So the word hero for her, absolutely, yes.
41:24There's a lot of what ifs and you think, damn, I'm lucky.
41:28I'm lucky that I walked away from it.
