00:00My nonprofit, Mahogany Mermaids, is geared toward getting children of color, specifically black, involved in the aquatic sciences.
00:06So I thought it would be absolutely amazing to expose younger children of color, specifically black, to those opportunities, to those spaces,
00:14so that they knew that they belong, they knew that there were people there to guide them, to lead them, and to show them into a whole new world.
00:20Yeah, so Miss, we, you know, minorities in shark sciences, we love calling ourselves Miss.
00:25And we started in 2020, and kind of create a community of women of color, of black women, to just feel safe in the field of shark science, because it is very white male dominated.
00:39It's pretty surreal, like I've definitely had some serious imposter syndrome, like what?
00:45You know, I grew up in Queens, and I'm like, we don't get to become explorers.
00:49I was looking at the National Geographic magazine when I was a kid, thinking about, ooh, these people are amazing.
00:55And now I'm one.
00:57You're one.
00:58Yes, you are, and you are amazing.
