01:18Welcome, welcome, ladies!
01:24Thank you!
01:24Oh, my gosh!
01:26Can I just say, first of all,
01:27we are at Essence.
01:30This is the diaspora at its finest!
01:35Seriously!
01:36We receive it!
01:37Right?
01:37Right, Cheryl?
01:38We talk about this all the time, don't we?
01:41So, welcome again.
01:42And we're just going to get right to it, all right?
01:44We want each of you to answer this question.
01:46Okay.
01:47What does the Essence brand mean to you?
01:50Oh, my goodness.
01:51Yeah.
01:52Charity?
01:53Yeah, for me, the Essence brand is everything.
01:56It's a community, obviously,
01:58but a way to empower black women
02:02and to give us just a space to be ourselves unapologetically.
02:06And that's important.
02:10So, for me, it means everything, yeah.
02:12Yeah.
02:13I would concur.
02:15Essence is everything.
02:17And absolutely, it means memories for me.
02:20My walls, when I was a kid,
02:22were just filled with pictures of models and covers
02:27just torn out of the pages of Essence.
02:29So, yeah, just seeing myself
02:31or people who looked like me on the pages of a magazine,
02:34that's what Essence is to me.
02:35I don't think people realize the power of that, no.
02:38Very powerful.
02:39Exactly.
02:39Oh, absolutely.
02:40Conquering and conquering.
02:42Yeah.
02:43Because, really, it was about
02:46and continues to be about that magazine, right?
02:49And what that cover is
02:51and then flipping through the pages and saying,
02:54oh, this is, I'm regular.
02:57I'm not, right?
02:58It's like, and it gave me the thing to aspire to,
03:02things that I could try,
03:04things I could do with my hair,
03:05you know, things I could do with my makeup, you know?
03:08And continues to do that.
03:12And I tell you,
03:13actually, one of the most amazing accomplishments
03:17is when I did get a chance to do a cover for Essence.
03:21Oh, yes.
03:21Because you're like, wait a minute.
03:24Wait a minute.
03:25I mean, that's getting somewhere.
03:29And then I was done after that.
03:30I was like, I don't have to do anything else after that.
03:33Yeah, yeah.
03:34You know, for me, Essence is so many wonderful things.
03:38I remember my,
03:39I remember the very first Essence Fest.
03:43Yes, Susan Taylor, the editor at the time,
03:48had an idea for a black family reunion
03:51and all the people who love us,
03:55everybody to come together.
03:56And I look at it now and what it has grown into,
04:00and I'm just like, wow,
04:03so many things can start with just a dream.
04:06But then I remember my very first Essence magazine.
04:11And here I am, this young kid opening this magazine,
04:16and it was different than Ebony and Jet
04:18because it was the beauty of black women
04:22in shades and sizes and shapes
04:26and the colors of us.
04:29And I just felt so good,
04:31and it was aspirational,
04:33and I dreamt about what I could be.
04:36And then just like you,
04:37I ended up on a cover with my son.
04:40And he was three years old.
04:42I remember that cover.
04:43Yes, it was Christmas.
04:45It was December.
04:46The December cover.
04:48And I remember thinking,
04:49wow, look what God has done.
04:53So Essence, like everyone has said,
04:55is so many wonderful memories for me.
04:58Oh, but you also were honored this year.
05:01Yes, yes.
05:02Give it up for Shirley Rodney.
05:03Being an Essence woman and receiving that award
05:08and the love in that room this year was amazing.
05:13So thank you for that.
05:15And you brought us all to tears
05:16because you always pour into us.
05:17So thank you for that.
05:19And Lisa Ann, you've been here.
05:20I have, but I have to tell you that much like Cheryl,
05:25you know, we grew up in a time before the internet,
05:28before it existed,
05:30and certainly before people had access
05:32to multiple images and inspirations.
05:38And when I was a kid growing up in D.C.,
05:40my friends, you know,
05:41the people who were our homecoming queens at my schools
05:44were black women, beautiful women.
05:46And at their houses was Essence magazine.
05:50And I remember the ads.
05:52I remember fashion fair ads.
05:55And I remember going to the Montgomery Ward
05:58with my friends at the mall,
06:00and there was a big fashion fair island
06:02that was the one store that had it.
06:05And they would do it,
06:06because there was no Sephora even.
06:08They would go and do their makeup,
06:09and it was the one brand that had all the shades.
06:13And it was so beautiful.
06:15And I was, I remember being, not jealous,
06:19but so excited.
06:22Maybe a little bit.
06:24But also, no, to celebrate,
06:26because I love makeup,
06:27and I would throw all my friends down
06:29and just beat their face.
06:31And that was the brand we could use.
06:33So that magazine that celebrated
06:36all these beautiful women
06:37and the brands that you could use
06:39and the hair brands that you could use
06:41that I saw advertised on Soul Train every week.
06:46You know, that was the meeting place
06:49and where we saw Beverly Johnson
06:51in every issue, you know,
06:55even before she was on Glamour.
06:57So it was just such a celebration
06:59of black beauty and the community
07:02that I, you know,
07:05I was just happy to be near it.
07:08As I am now.
07:09Yes.
07:10For me, growing up,
07:12reading Essence Magazine,
07:15it wasn't,
07:16I don't think I knew
07:17that I was seeing myself just yet,
07:19because I was so excited
07:21to see my mother
07:22and to see my aunt
07:23and my babysitter
07:24and my teachers
07:25and the village that raised me
07:27betwixt the pages
07:29of this magazine
07:30where like,
07:31and I'm from Brooklyn,
07:32I didn't know
07:32that it was possible
07:33until I saw Essence Magazine.
07:35And so the joy
07:37and the feeling that I got
07:39looking at
07:39and seeing beautiful women
07:41who looked exactly like me,
07:43who looked exactly like my,
07:44the people who raised me
07:45was really, really,
07:46really, really spectacular
07:48and important.
07:49And I did eventually
07:51end up on the cover of Essence
07:52and I was also honored one year
07:54and I think that like the,
07:56when I was going
07:56and I had no idea
07:57like what it meant
07:58or I didn't,
07:59it was such a busy week
08:00that I didn't really fully,
08:02sometimes I don't let myself
08:03feel things
08:04until someone pushed me out
08:06on stage
08:06as I was getting the glass
08:07and I was,
08:07and I think I broke down
08:09in tears
08:09and I don't think
08:10I could really, really speak
08:11because it was such
08:12a big, gigantic moment
08:14that if I knew
08:15how big it would be,
08:16I probably would have
08:17stayed in my seat.
08:18You know, it was too big.
08:21That's the power
08:21of being seen, right?
08:23And it's so wonderful
08:24to be in this space
08:25with all of these
08:26beautiful, beautiful women.
08:28And speaking of that, right,
08:30ABC has done a great job
08:33of showing real, right,
08:35and representative stories.
08:37How important has that been
08:39in each of your
08:40professional journeys,
08:41just being a part
08:42of the magic
08:42of ABC, of Disney,
08:44and seeing yourselves?
08:46Who wants to start?
08:47I can start.
08:48Obviously, the 20th season
08:50and being honored
08:52to be named
08:53the next Bachelorette
08:55was a huge moment.
08:57And I, yes,
08:59I remember, like,
09:00when I first was asked,
09:01I couldn't believe it,
09:03but then obviously,
09:04like, I accepted
09:04and I was like,
09:05yes, of course,
09:06but my mind immediately
09:07went to just, like,
09:08what it will mean
09:09for representation on TV.
09:11And we know, like,
09:12when it comes to, like,
09:13reality TV,
09:14when it comes to just
09:15TV shows in general,
09:15like, we have to do things
09:17twice as hard,
09:19work twice as hard
09:20in order to be just
09:21seen deserving
09:22to be in these spaces.
09:24And so I knew
09:25that that was a moment.
09:26It was much bigger
09:27than myself
09:28and much bigger
09:29than my journey
09:29of finding love.
09:31So my journey
09:32is not quite over,
09:33but it's just beginning
09:34and I'm grateful,
09:36truly grateful
09:36to be here.
09:38I'm already obsessed
09:38with your journey.
09:40Me too.
09:41Y'all, you've been
09:42like, we all are
09:42when we do it.
09:43Yeah, okay.
09:43It's a clue.
09:44I already started watching
09:45and I was like,
09:45okay, I'm stuck.
09:46Yes.
09:47Every week, Monday nights.
09:49Excited for that journey.
09:51Yes, ABC, ABC.
09:52For me,
09:53being a part
09:54of the Wonder Years
09:55and representing
09:55the black family
09:57and seeing this
09:58intact family
09:59with working parents,
10:02good students,
10:03you know,
10:04they get into
10:04a little trouble,
10:05some shenanigans
10:06here and there.
10:07But just being a part
10:08of that and when
10:09I'm running into people,
10:10just when I'm out
10:10and about in the world,
10:11the feedback that I get
10:13is so wonderful.
10:14People are just
10:15so excited
10:15just to see
10:17this family
10:18and so I think
10:19it's really simple
10:20but you realize
10:21there's not a lot
10:22of that on television
10:23right now.
10:24You know,
10:24I grew up watching
10:25Miss Ma'am right here
10:27play on television
10:30and movies
10:30and just really,
10:33Cheryl Lee
10:34was such an inspiration
10:35for me.
10:36I know that being
10:37able to see
10:38parents together
10:41on television
10:42is just as inspirational
10:43as it was for me.
10:44I'm hoping that I'm able
10:46to be that way
10:47for families
10:48and for young people
10:49on television as well.
10:50Oh, you are.
10:50You are.
10:51Yes.
10:51You are.
10:53I think sort of
10:55from the very beginning
10:56and I don't even know
10:57how intentional it was
10:58with Grey's Anatomy
10:59is normalizing
11:01what's normal.
11:02Yes.
11:02Like this is what
11:03we look like
11:04as a country,
11:06you know,
11:06and when you go
11:07to see your,
11:08you know,
11:09doctors,
11:10how nice it is
11:12to be able to
11:13see someone
11:14who looks like you
11:15and not because
11:17it doesn't have anything
11:18to do with competence.
11:19It has to do with
11:20as a patient
11:21just, you know,
11:22feeling comfortable
11:23and you're in your
11:24most vulnerable self,
11:26right,
11:27in the midst
11:28of healthcare.
11:29And how helpful
11:30that is.
11:32We didn't even,
11:33I don't think,
11:34realize at the beginning
11:35that that's what it was.
11:36But the byproduct
11:37of that is
11:38the countless number
11:40of people
11:41that have said to me,
11:42I went to medical school
11:44because I saw
11:45your image
11:46on television.
11:48Yes.
11:48I never even thought
11:49about that for myself.
11:51Or people that say,
11:52oh, my doctor
11:54is just like you,
11:55right,
11:56or I know somebody
11:57that's just like you.
11:57Like that
11:58is absolutely,
12:00you know,
12:01amazing.
12:02And again,
12:02it's like a residual
12:04effect of just being
12:05truthful.
12:06That's all it is.
12:08Well, there's that saying,
12:09right, Chandra?
12:10If she can see it,
12:11she can be it.
12:12Absolutely.
12:13And that's what
12:14kids tell me
12:15over and over again.
12:16So I'm very thankful
12:17to be able
12:18to pass that full.
12:19And we're so thankful
12:19to you too.
12:20It's been an absolute
12:21joy and pleasure
12:22just watching your
12:22whole journey.
12:23So congratulations.
12:24All that medical jargon.
12:25Okay.
12:26Yes.
12:26An actor's dream
12:27medical jargon.
12:28Yes.
12:29Just like you.
12:30Good gig.
12:31You know,
12:32it's so interesting
12:33for me.
12:33ABC has a special
12:34place for me
12:36because my very
12:36first TV job
12:39was a pilot
12:40for ABC.
12:42Debra,
12:42I think it was
12:42Debra Morgan
12:43and I,
12:44we did a pilot
12:45that was a part
12:46of,
12:46yeah.
12:47That's too much
12:47dimples now.
12:48All the dimples
12:49for real?
12:49Oh, Lord.
12:50And it was a part
12:52of a series
12:54called
12:55The Croft
12:56Family Hour.
12:58And to now
12:59think about
13:00that moment
13:01then
13:01to where
13:02I am now
13:04with ABC
13:05with the number
13:07one TV show
13:08in the world.
13:10And you being
13:12an Emmy
13:12with the
13:13Emmy
13:14with the
13:15documentary.
13:17Let's talk
13:18about it.
13:19I am just
13:20so thrilled
13:21and happy.
13:23Such a full circle.
13:25Then I sit here
13:26with all of you
13:27and I think about
13:29look at the
13:29generations together
13:31on TV
13:33and what it is
13:34we represent
13:35for our audience.
13:37And it is not
13:38forced.
13:40It is coming
13:41at you
13:42authentically.
13:44They are not
13:44trying to fit us
13:46in these little
13:46cookie cutters
13:48because we are
13:49just in these
13:50roles.
13:50We're all different.
13:51All different.
13:53And there are
13:53more of us.
13:55We're not even
13:56half of us
13:58that are there
13:58on the network.
14:00So when I look
14:01at what we all
14:02represent together
14:03and even you
14:04in the position
14:05that you are in
14:06at ABC
14:07I am just
14:08thankful for the
14:09American
14:10Broadcasting
14:11Company.
14:12Thank you ABC.
14:13Every day on the
14:23set.
14:23Every day.
14:24We get testimony
14:26every day.
14:28It is the most
14:28wonderful place
14:30to be.
14:31And I will say
14:32honestly
14:33this is
14:33part of it
14:35because I'm
14:35as an observer
14:36and grateful
14:37to be asked
14:38as an observer
14:39about the
14:40importance of
14:40representation.
14:41I mean clearly
14:42I know and I
14:43see it all the
14:44time.
14:44Italians need to
14:45be represented
14:46too.
14:46What do you mean
14:47girl?
14:49Sicilians.
14:50Anyway.
14:51Different kind
14:52of a test.
14:53That's every day.
14:56So this is
14:58where I see it
14:59and the importance
15:00of it.
15:00My first movie
15:02my first big movie
15:03also a Disney
15:05product.
15:06Eddie starring
15:07Whoopi Goldberg.
15:09And Whoopi
15:10I went in
15:12and read
15:12and she fought
15:13for me
15:14to play her
15:15best friend.
15:16And coming
15:17full circle
15:18I get to be
15:19with this one
15:20every day
15:21playing best
15:22friends of
15:23a similar age
15:25and a similar
15:27experience.
15:28I'm not that much
15:29younger than you
15:30are.
15:31Okay.
15:34Exactly.
15:35I think for
15:37people to
15:38embrace us
15:40as what they
15:41call work
15:41wives and to
15:42see how people
15:43are when they
15:44just love each
15:44other and are
15:45there for each
15:46other ride or
15:46die is really
15:48important for
15:49in terms of
15:51not it's not
15:53necessarily I mean
15:54for me it's not
15:55color but obviously
15:56for the world but
15:57for women of a
15:59certain age to be
16:00represented as we
16:01are and as we
16:02exist in real life
16:03being there for
16:04each other
16:05through everything
16:06they don't show
16:07it all the time
16:08on TV they
16:09don't show it
16:09anywhere they're
16:10like oh well we
16:11have one we have
16:12one that's over
16:1340 that do we
16:14need more really
16:15and so that's why
16:17I in particular
16:18love this for us
16:20and for all the
16:21women that we
16:21represent the other
16:23thing that I get
16:23to see every day
16:24is the faces of
16:26the children on
16:26our show.
16:27Yes.
16:28And those children
16:29who are who are
16:30beautiful talented
16:32full of love and
16:34life are representing
16:36such a big population
16:39in this country and
16:41they do it so
16:41beautifully and kids
16:42I hear stories all
16:44the time of children
16:45all over the country
16:46that watch the show
16:47because people in
16:48generations watch our
16:49show which we love
16:50to hear and Quinta
16:51loves to hear and
16:53and they say that's
16:55me that looks like
16:56me mommy that looks
16:57like me and to hear
16:59those stories and
17:00what Quinta has done
17:01in in putting
17:03together those
17:04opportunities is just
17:05it's just a blessing
17:06to be a part of it
17:07so thank you to her
17:08and to ABC for doing
17:09this.
17:10Well we still I think
17:11one thing that we
17:11also have to to call
17:12out and give you
17:13flowers for is it in
17:15terms of representation
17:16community and
17:18allyship and you're
17:19always here you're
17:20always around so I
17:22will always be here
17:23for Cheryl and
17:24anything she asked
17:25me to do I will be
17:26here.
17:26And the thing is it's
17:27like you know we
17:28always say oh girl
17:28she invited to the
17:29cookout you girl
17:30you always have the
17:31cookout but I mean
17:33it's just it feels
17:34nor I mean truthfully
17:35exactly it feels
17:36normal to me that is
17:37the the community I
17:39came up in and to
17:40to pretend like it's
17:42anything else is just
17:43I and I've said this
17:44in the past I have
17:45never felt as
17:46comfortable as
17:47loved as
17:47appreciated as I
17:49am in the cast of
17:50Abbott Elementary and
17:51on that set.
17:52Yeah.
17:54Gabby.
17:55Thank you for the
17:56invite.
17:58Always.
17:59So for me I'm new
18:02to ABC.
18:02Hi.
18:05No honey you're a
18:06movie star.
18:06We met you in the
18:07movies.
18:07Still new here but
18:09but the show I'm on
18:11Prank Panel I kind
18:12of like it's about
18:13pranks and I think
18:14that I always thought
18:15of pranks as sort of
18:16like white nonsense
18:17in a way.
18:18You know what I
18:18mean just like just
18:19oh oh okay.
18:21Okay y'all chasing
18:23around little people.
18:24Cool.
18:25Like you know it
18:26just it sort of
18:27didn't feel and I
18:27think I felt like that
18:28because I didn't see
18:29enough of myself in
18:30that space and
18:32didn't really and I
18:33the first day at
18:34work like I was
18:35like they don't need
18:36me they're definitely
18:37going to replace me
18:38with Nicole Byers
18:39but I thought and I
18:41thought why am I
18:42here but then I
18:43realized that that
18:46my space the space
18:48that I exist in as a
18:49woman and as a
18:50black woman the other
18:51panelists are Johnny
18:52Knoxville and Eric
18:54Andre that like yeah
18:56oh no things were
18:57literally blowing up
18:58like they were
18:59tasing each other
19:00it was nuts but I
19:02realized that like I
19:03was needed in that
19:04space because there's
19:06something that I
19:06represent there's an
19:07idea that I understand
19:09and also there are
19:10things that I can say
19:11that they cannot and
19:13things that I know
19:14that they don't know
19:15like if we're doing a
19:16prank with you know an
19:17older black woman and
19:19we want to kick someone
19:20in a church like maybe
19:21let's not you know
19:23maybe maybe no you
19:25know maybe no so like
19:29I have I have opinions
19:30that actually matter in
19:32this space and on top
19:34of that speaking of
19:34that older black woman
19:35protect the people it's
19:36like it's it's wonderful
19:37to like make because
19:39like not everything needs
19:40to like be I'm we have
19:42enough that uplifts our
19:43community that shows our
19:44community and sometimes I
19:46just want to laugh and be
19:48silly because we can also
19:49just be silly we don't
19:50have to hold the
19:51arbitrage of like blackness
19:53on our back at all
19:54times because we already
19:55do because we already
19:57do right and so and
19:58it's never we can never
20:00we can never put it
20:01down but it's nice to
20:02just like we had a one
20:04of my pranks we give an
20:06older black woman she's
20:07like in her 80s the
20:08chance to be the star of
20:09a music video and let me
20:11tell you mama said it
20:12off okay mama was going
20:14off and she was in the
20:15smile on her face and the
20:18joy and it's so it's just
20:19a dumb prank show but
20:21it's not like the joy
20:22that it gave this woman
20:23was everything and so
20:24that's why I feel I
20:26finally feel like I am
20:28comfortable in this space
20:28and this is why I'm here
20:29that's beautiful that's
20:30beautiful they just told
20:32me that I have one
20:33minute but listen the
20:34theme the theme is the
20:36power of joy you've just
20:37brought up something that
20:38is so important and as
20:39women there's so much
20:41that we have to deal
20:42with and I think to
20:43close this out let's
20:44celebrate the power of
20:45joy what brings you all
20:46joy so much drawing
20:51breath every day right
20:54there you know like
20:56learning how to prioritize
20:59and like put down stuff
21:01and pick up other things
21:02but mostly helping out
21:03somebody else there's no
21:05greater pleasure than
21:07sending somebody a text
21:09that hadn't heard from
21:10you in a while you know
21:11picking up the phone like
21:14the act like a call too
21:15is nice just just when
21:18you think explain to the
21:19young people what
21:20picking up a phone is
21:21you know your dial and
21:24then yeah yeah I have
21:26to piggyback on that
21:27that drawing breath that
21:28taking baths I love to
21:30take baths I just love to
21:32soak soak soak you know
21:34and and have tea and just
21:36yes the candles champagne
21:37all of that yes that's
21:39that's my that brings me a
21:41lot of joy yeah just so
21:42eat self-care taking that
21:44time for self-care and
21:46and celebrating who we
21:47are as a people and
21:48having an opportunity to
21:49to perform and speak to
21:51people and and sing and
21:52then come on back and
21:53get back in the tub I'll
21:57go real quick mine's
21:58quick making people laugh
21:59that is what brings me
22:02joy it is what God put me
22:03on this earth to do and I
22:05learned that real young and
22:06I am so blessed that I get
22:09to do it for a living yeah
22:10yeah yes I'm reminded of
22:14you know that song that
22:14Anita Baker would sing you
22:16bring me joy I never
22:19misses an opportunity to
22:20sing I've noticed that
22:21about you I love you know
22:24I love singing there's just
22:26something so centering about
22:28it for me but I have to it
22:30brings me joy but I have to
22:32tell you that when I think
22:33about it damn it's my family
22:36it is the love of my
22:38husband it is the love of
22:41my children it is the love
22:45that I get from this
22:46audience that we have
22:48gained from this show it is
22:52the love and it brings me
22:54the kind of joy that I am
22:57just so thankful for grateful
23:00for every blessed day that
23:03I'm breathing yes all right
23:05I have to piggyback off
23:07that because the best part
23:09of the day for me is getting
23:12into bed with my husband and
23:14our two come on I'm a cat
23:16mom proudly we get in our
23:18bed we and we get we go to
23:20bed kind of comically early
23:21like 630 and we just watch
23:24programs together he likes to
23:26call it programs and we're
23:27like that's what we stock it
23:29up and we watch our programs
23:30together with our cats in bed
23:32and we have dinner and I eat
23:33cherries and it's like it's I
23:35know it's does he feed you
23:37cherries oh my god but that
23:44alone it gives me so much joy
23:46every single day and I get to
23:48experience it every single day
23:50yes trick question who you
23:52crawling to bed with is
23:53somebody from the show
23:54no but for me I would have to
24:05say absolutely family my support
24:07system they being on this and
24:11going on this incredible journey
24:12being here where I'm at right
24:13now my family has been so
24:15supportive but you know for me
24:18it's my parents too I think my
24:20faith brings me joy being able to
24:23kind of just go back to that and
24:24and remember my values and where
24:26I came from like all of that is
24:28what I can stop at the end of the
24:29day and remind myself of you know
24:31what is this what is all of this
24:33and what brings me joy but then
24:35also lastly I'm saying no
24:37prioritizing myself learning to say
24:40no which is something I've had to
24:42learn to do but it is so like it's
24:44empowering it's fulfilling it's
24:46it's like no other when you can just
24:48take a moment be like you know what
24:50my cup is empty I cannot and I will
24:52not so there's that well this has
24:54brought me so much joy
24:55oh thank you so much and that's all
