00:00But it comes down to really who you're writing the book for.
00:03For me, The Yards Between Us was for myself, first and foremost, to tell my story, to share
00:08in a way that I had never done before and to really look at my life in genuine wholeness
00:13and to express that.
00:14And it was also for the little R.K. Russells out there in the world, the little black boys
00:18who didn't see themselves represented in sports or in the LGBTQ plus community or in between
00:23those intersections.
00:24The book came out in 2021, and the book follows, very quickly, two black women who work in
00:31a very white workplace in publishing.
00:34And that was my experience.
00:35So I was, in a lot of ways, putting my literal experiences into my main character, which is
00:41sometimes not that healthy.
00:43And I had to really step out of that character once the show happened because it's like,
00:50OK, this was my journey for the book.
00:52This is like we were talking about this earlier.
00:53This is like my child.
00:55But now I see the show as like the teenage version of the child.
00:58And I'm just like, go, go out into the world.
