00:00What Oral Hershizer did in September of 1988 is something history won't soon forget.
00:06Every pitcher wants to win 20.
00:11And Hershizer with the count 1 and 2 and 2 out.
00:16Sets and delivers.
00:17Strike three and he's done it.
00:20But Oral wasn't satisfied with his first 20-win season.
00:24He kept on winning and he kept on throwing shutout after shutout.
00:28Going for his 6th grade shutout.
00:30Going for his 9th consecutive complete game.
00:34Right back to him.
00:3757 and a 3rd scoreless innings.
00:41Carmelo has popped up, grounded out, and grounded out again.
00:47Hershizer has tied the record of Don Drysdale.
00:51The Padres go in order so easily, so quickly on 3 ground balls to the pitcher, 2nd baseman, and 3rd baseman.
00:57As Hershizer, as we complete 9 innings, has tied Drysdale to 58 consecutive.
01:04Unbelievable to go extra innings and give him a chance.
01:06The 1-2 pitch.
01:08Fly ball to right and a semi-check swing.
01:11Gonzalez, the record.
01:14Oral Hershizer, 59 consecutive innings, scoreless.
01:18The all-time record.
01:19What a great performance.
01:25Congratulations to him.
01:26What a great job.
01:28And still a scoreless game for 10.
01:30The Dodgers' Oral Hershizer broke one of baseball's toughest records when he passed former Dodger great Don Drysdale by pitching 10 scoreless innings against the Padres and running his shutout string to 59 innings.
01:45This is the record that when people ask me what record in baseball is going to stand forever, this is the one I used to say.
01:51Now I think somebody's going to break it from me because I know I'm not any big deal.
01:55I really didn't want to break it.
01:57You know, but some people on the bench convinced me that I should go forward and not play around with the records.
02:01I wanted to let Don and I just be at the top.
02:03And the people said I just got to keep going.
02:05When I found that out, I kicked them right in the rear end.
02:08If I had known that, I said, get your buns back out there and let's go.
02:11Go as far as you can.
02:12Go as far as you can.
