02:23and eat and eat so um i'm gonna make sure i've eaten this bacon but you've got to get anywhere

02:37and his mum lucy come on are desperate for graham's help i'm really excited to meet graham today
02:46hopefully he can help me with this situation graham needn't have worried about that bacon sarnie

03:36a big large crap huey stop it the smellier and the more fresh it is the better so fresh huey stop he
03:46doesn't wait for it to hit the ground he will try to eat it directly as it's coming out of their
03:53bums oh my god huey he'd probably eat as much as he can like it would literally be a poo buffet
04:01huey stop and he's not picky is he eating more poo are you other dog walkers they must be thinking
04:09it's really disgusting no huey it makes me feel completely sick oh no not the sort of thing you
04:19want to be seeing especially not first thing in the morning huey no matter how fast trish is
04:24stop it huey still pops up in the right place for a whiffy mr whippy huey has got a detector for when
04:33dogs are laying down their poo it's like he can hear it coming down the intestines must be like when
04:40you hear the ice cream fan comes and it's all like do do do do do do do do you wait he can hear that
04:48coming from the dog's arse basically stop it don't know if it's a behavioral issue or if it's something
04:57more serious like a deficiency that he has so it would be good to get to the bottom of it no pun intended
05:04to stop huey's horrid habit naughty boy graham needs to know what's causing it why do you think
05:12he does it i have no idea i wish i knew okay i wish i knew i'll be honest it's not as rare as you think
05:20to see a dog eat poo yeah but it's really rare to see a dog do what your dogs do i know you know

05:31ugh dirty dog do you worry about you know what could be in that poo definitely there have been
05:41times i've had to take huey to the vets um not long ago actually and the vets said that he had colitis
05:48and that it was likely the cause was from eating so much poo that's inflammation of the colon
05:54this is one of those cases that's kind of funny on the surface and you have a bit of a oh no giggle
06:00about it but what once you've got over that you realize that actually this is quite serious
06:06so lucy's mom hughie's the son of how come you ended up with the two of them lucy when she was
06:12given birth we found out that she actually had ten puppies wow inside and unfortunately two of the
06:18puppies were stuck in the birth canal huey was the only survivor oh wow yeah out of the whole ten
06:25lucy was so unwell after the birth trish had to step in when he was a baby and he was born i had to
06:33hand rear him and he would just love to have skin connection it was almost like having a real baby
06:42sole survivor huey and trish became inseparable i love lucy but the bond is even stronger with huey
06:51which is why i really don't want to have to think about rehoming him how do you feel about
06:57this for the next 15 years i need to be able to find a solution to deal with this because it's just
07:04disgusting yeah i love him but this has got to stop but there's a serious worry all right graham's
07:12concerned huey's dirty addiction isn't behavioral but medical because this is so unusual i just wonder
07:20whether there might be something else going on here so i really want to take a bit of advice
07:25doing what he's doing is putting him in danger real danger if she lost this dog 10 out of 10 puppies
07:32can you imagine how that would be coming up graham's search for answers takes a turn so a lot of
07:40cockapoo's with this kind of problem 50 of my intake is a cockapoo or something poo which could
07:46derail any hopes for fixing it okay so we've got our first set of results back at graham's puppy
07:53school a juvenile delinquent super distracted yeah he's just not interested yeah he's vying for class
08:00clown you know when you said you wanted an energetic dog and a labrador with an appetite for destruction
08:07we used to have a nice rug down here dining room table is leaving a granddad isolated we used to
08:13have family social gatherings here in the garden it's not like that now which affects my dad massively
08:26what's he doing graham's in bexley southeast london oh no where pooey huey's horrid hunger
08:34for piping hot huey stop doggy doos the smellier and the more fresh it is the better is stressing
08:43out trish oh god he's doing it again huey stop and leaving fellow dog walkers horrified not the
08:50sort of thing you want to be seeing especially not first thing in the morning stop stop stop
08:56it's really important we knock this problem on the head because for trish it's extremely embarrassing
08:59and i'm also thinking sooner or later he's going to pick on the one dog that really really doesn't
09:05like it graham fears it's more than bad behavior huey stop and a medical issue could derail any training
09:14because this is so unusual i just want to take some advice from a vet that i know i've worked with before
09:20dr charlotte gray is a veterinary surgeon with a focus on clinical nutrition charlie this is trish
09:29and huey so what reasons are there for a dog eating poo there are a few some dogs learn it because as
09:36puppies their mum will eat the poo to keep the nest clean and actually there are some puppies who will
09:42start doing that and just never really stop huey was an only pup and all that extra fuss from his furry
09:49mum may have shaped his horrid habit but there could be a genetic quirk at play too he is a
09:56cockapoo based on my client base in the nutrition clinic that always makes me a little bit suspicious
10:02that maybe there's a reason that started it off so a lot of cockapoos with this kind of problem yeah
10:07a disproportionate number of cockapoos that have got odd food behaviors and 50 of my intake is a
10:13cockapoo or something poo who actually have an illness that's causing them some discomfort or some
10:19nausea which sounds back to front given that you'd think if they felt sick that eating poo would be the
10:25last thing on your mind it's never worked for me no it's never been my favorite hanging cure with
10:30cockapoos prone to tummy troubles huey may be eating poo because he's uncomfortable so it'd be nice if we
10:37could have a look at him i think have a feel of his tummy come with him baby sorry huey you're not
10:41the smallest cockapoo hello well he's at his phone how are you oh great that's lucky you don't lick
10:46me face good boy well done first a once-over to check for soreness he's not tense at all he doesn't
10:55seem to worry with no obvious signs of pain a blood test could show if anything's off almost done
11:02okay well done so that's huey's blood the only test we've got left to do is the poo test collect
11:12some poo in one of these poo pots that will tell us whether there's inflammation high up his gut the
11:18poo test will take a few weeks but with a lab on site his bloods can be checked straight away okay so
11:26we've got our first set of results and so far it's good news he's not got any signs of anemia he's got
11:31no signs of infection so overall this is normal am i okay to carry on with some training yes well
11:39so far so reassuring i think yeah thank you very much no pleasure hopefully we get him sorted out
11:44yeah all right well crack on while there's still more results to come back the blood tests point to
11:50huey's poo passion as a learned behavior not a medical one well i'm glad we've got the go ahead
11:56to do the training which is great except i don't know how i'm going to do it yeah no i mean think
12:03about it dog training is all about repetition and i'm going to have to get huey to step away from the
12:09poo repeatedly which means i'm going to have to get a load of dogs to sort of poo on command otherwise
12:14we're going to be there all day graham's ready to get his hands dirty but cracking huey's filthy
12:20fixation will take more than a whiff of inspiration in the meantime he's back in
12:28bistro in oxfordshire where he's recently opened his new puppy school i started my journey as a
12:34professional dog trainer doing dog and particularly puppy classes and then i kind of moved away from
12:40that and i've been going around the country helping people with badly behaved dogs quite nice to work
12:45with puppies again he's brought together a class of new puppy owners to guide them through the key
12:51training milestones i wonder what we're gonna learn today from around 12 weeks old puppies need clear
12:59focused lessons to shape good behavior you're gonna be wild trying by the end of this graham knows only
13:06too well without that early guidance these cuties can grow into his usual clientele no kevin
13:18ow the last lesson was all about socialization when things start to go a little bit iffy don't
13:24look nervous by around 12 weeks fully vaccinated pups can finally get out and explore helping them
13:31get used to the sights sounds and smells around them good boy johnny good boy let's get a motorbike
13:40well today's milestone is something that's as fundamental for dogs as well like the abc's one
13:46two threes for little humans so it's really important that they get this returning our rescue winnie
13:52family dog sydney break up pup boo and farm dog mr todd and introducing new student loki
14:03you're not excited lorraine come on through nice to meet you you're all right so so loki he's a
14:12vizla isn't he he is yeah hungarian vizla grab a seat by the way thank you yeah
14:19looks like winnie needs more socialization training oh dear he's like blimey okay first day at school
14:26all yeah winnie well welcome to our little merry band how old is he he's 15 weeks 15 weeks he's a
14:35big lad for 15 weeks isn't he hey yeah recently retired child protection officer lorraine isn't
14:41putting her feet up just yet my plans with loki are to go on adventures he's a breed that loves to run
14:49and explore and so i'm hoping that we can go off and do that when he's a bit bigger it's not going
14:56to be a quiet retirement at all it's going to be an exciting one you made a good choice there then
15:02they're definitely energetic i'll give you that yeah today we're moving on a bit there's a really
15:09essential set of skills that i want to teach you and these are all about building a bond teaching the
15:14dogs how to respond to your cues basically we're going to tell them to do something and teach
15:19them how to do it vocal cues or commands are a big early lesson the first are sit and stay
15:28which aren't just good manners they're about safety keeping pups out of trouble hello mr todd
15:34when it comes to teaching sit graham has a tip actions speak louder than words
15:41so he's not sitting first graham gets mr todd's attention with a treat then raises it up
15:48we move over his head and he naturally sits down good there you go now can anybody tell me what i'm
15:56not doing you didn't say the word set bang on why would i not be saying sit we are doing sit training
16:02after all because he doesn't know what it means he doesn't know what it means you're absolutely right
16:07lorraine first we get him doing the action playing a game oh right i touched my bum on the ground you give
16:13me one of those treats then and only then do we start to say sit we do say actions speak louder than
16:20words and we're human we're pretty good at words puppies aren't so good that's why i always teach action
16:26first and then tell them the word so by prompting the action graham then adds the q word
16:35sit and by repeating sit he connects the word to the action good after just a few attempts sit he's got
16:45it good boy and that's a general principle you're going to see in all doctrine you show them what you
16:52mean and then you label it you give it a name that's your cue off you go can the class copy graham's
17:00success mr todd is first to understand what he said soon rescue pup winnie
17:08good girl sit little boo look at that and finally sydney all master the vocal cue
17:16but new boy loki move your hand up lorraine doesn't seem interested in studying super distracted hey
17:23yeah he's just not interested just wants to play so if you get your treat so hey hey what's this
17:31up and above but not to a jumping point there you go does that make sense so you're doing that with
17:37it you're luring them into position have your treat ready and i'll i'll give you a chance for loki
17:42lorraine's treats are no match to playing with another pop you know when you said you wanted an
17:48energetic dog right after working puppy training is getting and keeping their attention and loki is
17:54younger than the others lorraine is having a bit of a hard time but the worst thing she can do right now
18:00is give up and graham's come prepared right let's try something different a much tastier treat oh you
18:08like that don't you sit instantly gets loki's attention great with loki back on task it's time
18:15for the pup's first oral exam right let's see if we can get all the dogs to sit at the same time
18:22if i cure you so if we get them all standing up three two one six good boy fantastic look at that
18:34it's a great start how are we feeling about it happy yeah good so the next lesson is going to be
18:41stay but here's the catch i want you to get your dogs to stay without ever saying the word stay
18:48coming up graham's giving the pops the silent treatment
18:56he's got me he meets a labrador ransacking a retiree's home we've always had birthdays
19:02and different events here since i've had ziggy we haven't been able to do that and will pooey
19:08huey are you ready kick his filthy fix now go on call him
19:12graham hall's new puppy school is up and running and today he's teaching his four-legged pupils
19:26sit cues or commands good boy so far they've learned sit three two one sit
19:34fantastic look at that graham's next lesson is stay there are lots of times when we might want
19:42our dog to stay or wait just hang fire basically we might be crossing the road we might be about to
19:47go through again when it comes to stay graham's tip silence is golden and to demonstrate would you
19:56take a seat for a second please certainly thank you very much good but sometimes we need our dogs to
20:03sit or lie down for a period of time normally we think of that as maybe stay or even wait and i do
20:09that without saying either of those two words is he still sat there he is he is yeah why is that there
20:19i was told to did anybody say stay no point being why don't we teach dogs that sit means sit and keep
20:28sitting wouldn't that be simpler yeah you can join the group now connor thank you very much for helping
20:33out making a dog sit and stay has two challenges time and distance how far you can move away from
20:41the dog before they give chase first graham's tackling time hello boo come with me there you go
20:49come on then hello you know how to do sit now you sit good there you go sit uh no good so she's
21:03beginning to learn when he says sit and i sit maybe there's a gap in time now graham extends the time he
21:09makes her sit before giving the treat maybe it's a second or two before i actually get it sit
21:18good clever girl i wasn't counting what was that five seconds and before long boo's patiently sitting
21:25for 20 seconds how many times did i say stay no times don't need it do you sit and keep sitting is
21:34what we're teaching him yeah distance is the next challenge and graham needs a new volunteer now to
21:41start with good boy i'll take a step back step back in good boy there's no point going 10 feet backwards
21:49because he ain't got the hang of that yet there you go good boy sit for the pups the game is easy
21:58sit don't move and the treat will come to you a couple of little steps yeah good boy that's all right
22:04we dropped it sit good clever boy and then we build it up from there and within just a few minutes
22:17good boy nearly fell backwards good boy there you go go on then that'll do can the group get their
22:25pups to sit and stay without saying a word just to add a bit of spice to it that's the finish line
22:33if you can get as far as this finish line even for a second or two fantastic all right team best of
22:39luck three two one off you go to pass the test each pup must sit and stay until their human returns from
22:47the finish line set robert and winnie take an early lead you're nearly there keep going no other step
22:57well done rob you've nailed it go back and feed your dog fantastic good girl
23:03one down four to go that's it what's the team game going on here with mary and colin
23:07very good while loki and mr todd distract each other ruby with sydney is almost over the line
23:17you're there go on you go but sydney's enthusiasm gets the better of him oh no do you know what i'm
23:23not going to allow that ruby because your dog broke the sit at the last minute try again you had it
23:27roots nice good boy oh good boy okay all right well done well done ruby right off you go this time

23:45with loki colin's steaming ahead with mr todd that's it you're getting there one more step

23:58nearly there are taking things easy oh very good all right i'm all right with that leaving just new
24:06pop loki and lorraine lucky yeah yeah i think loki's struggling because it's a new environment
24:17lots of new friends that he wants to interact with i don't seem to exist when when when they're there
24:23if loki's ever to become lorraine's traveling buddy he needs to learn to listen sit
24:34oh lovely and after 10 long minutes well done lorraine that's better he's finally got it
24:41good boy it's a good boy well done good boy well i think give yourselves a round of applause everybody
24:46i think you did really well there fantastic good all right they're all got their own abilities you
24:54know some dogs it was easier than others for loki it's his first day at puppy school you know i think
24:58he's done amazingly well it's his first time interacting with so many dogs and playing with
25:04them and then the learning yeah really enjoyed it loved it and yeah just so worth it next time
25:11more milestones but in the meantime do go away and practice obviously the hard work starts when you

25:21training getting those crucial boundaries in early is what sets up a well-behaved dog and his next case

25:59yeah yeah that's right nice to meet you richard and the culprit caught red poured that's ziggy is
26:05it yes you can see what hello hello see what we're up against oh blimey i see so he destroys
26:11quernishings does he he does anything he can get his teeth round he's a bit bare isn't it yeah it is
26:17literally yeah it's a kennel it's it's his kennel since arriving 20-month-old ziggy has systematically
26:24destroyed everything in recently retired engineer richard's house he's got me i've not known anybody
26:31that's had a dog that's destroyed things like ziggy does right let go because if there is something
26:37within reach he will grab it and while you're taking that off him
26:41right he can be taking the handkerchief out of your pocket oh ziggy we would be talking thousands
26:50of pounds of stuff that he's destroyed richard's not exaggerating this used to be his best city
26:57he slowly demolished that over like an 18-month period it's a little bit uncomfortable i find it very
27:04stressful because you can't rest and relax for one minute no wonder there's nowhere left to relax
27:13it's preventing me from having a peaceful time it's preventing people visiting particularly my
27:21grandchildren proud granddad of three richard's house used to be the hub of family celebrations
27:28we've always had birthdays christmases and different events here with all the family coming over and
27:36enjoying time here but unfortunately since i've had ziggy we haven't been able to do that and if
27:43grandson zach does visit playtime's under lock and key this is a toy cupboard and also where zach can
27:50sit and do some coloring or painting we can't get it out because the dog's just potentially going to
27:58come in and take something the rest of the family think i'm mad because they think i should be able
28:05to control him a bit better the table is on top of there i did notice there was a table on your sofa
28:11yeah it's upside down because it stops him actually making a hole in the setting and i've saved the
28:17cushions oh yeah they're upstairs so anything that can be moved i've moved do you know if you played
28:24the game of who would live in a house like this you would i reckon you would say that's student digs
28:29in it we used to have a nice rug down here great big rug we had a dining room table so yeah it's it's
28:37it's very bare isn't it you definitely wouldn't think retired gentleman enjoying his time surrounded
28:42by all the things that you collect over a lifetime he's brought it back here he's
28:47started to rip that up you know go on then you see if you can catch him zach all right zach's your
28:52man oh he's fast yes right oh i see now let go ziggy ah no he's like i've got it i'm not let him out
29:07what's the solution well the solution that i've i've found is not to leave anything out right
29:12because richard's fix to ziggy's destructive behavior he will eventually give up on it has
29:18been to simply ignore it there ah well done it's not just grandad's house that's wrecked his garden
29:27looks like no man's land oh blimey have you had many unexploded bombs around it ziggy's impact has been
29:34genuinely devastating zach and his grandad are really close and it is so nice that they have
29:40such a bond but they're unable to interact the same way as they did we used to have family social
29:45gatherings here in the garden and everyone would come here this was the hub it's not like that now
29:51no you know we don't have social gatherings here which affects my dad massively what's your
29:58take on the way he treats the dog my dad's very soft-natured he's not one to raise his voice
30:03right so i think the dog kind of takes advantage of him a bit this is not a dog he was born to be
30:10the bossiest dog in the world far from it and yet he's getting away with murder lauren you were
30:16telling me you've got a couple of ideas yourself of where things might be going wrong do you want to
30:20tell your dad i think that you're you're a lovely person you're very soft though and i don't think
30:26there's much authority there when it comes to ziggy that's probably right so for example when lauren
30:32was young if lauren stepped out and did something naughty what happened did she get told off well
30:37she got told off who by probably her probably my mother not by you and thereby isaac hangs the rug
30:50right he's not getting sold off in any way so i think we need to tell him no yeah i'm quite prepared
30:57to consistent to do that yeah and because it's reached that point where you know it's make or
31:03break is granddad tough or soft soft out of the mouths of babes graham believes richard's lack of
31:12authority and inconsistent approach oh ziggy has allowed ziggy to run riot graham's probably hit the
31:20nail on the head with what he suggested with being a bit um bit firmer with ziggy as richard's been
31:28burying his head by locking his house down instead of his dog graham wants to put that right so the
31:34aim today really is we'll get to the end of the day and we'll put the room back together that'd be nice
31:38wouldn't it that would be a real treat starting with some of ziggy's favorite chewables pair of shoes
31:45cushion we'll stick that there oh and a blanket how about that so i'm going to teach ziggy how to
31:55leave it basically i'm going to walk him past a couple of items that he's not allowed to have
32:00and when he steps away we're going to say leave it we're going to guide him away from each of those
32:05items so if i take that lead thanks lauren come on then you're with me graham's house rules are easy
32:11to follow go over here as soon as ziggy shows interest in something he shouldn't leave it a clear
32:17no-nonsense warning cousin what's this leave it praise for backing away oh good boy very good yes
32:28and a reward with something he can play with come on here's your reward come on that oh you like that
32:34look because he's a chuggy toy yay the message to z couldn't be simpler these items no those items
32:43your dog toys yes ziggy's listening to graham leave it good boy there you go all right clever boy yeah
32:55much better than a cushion but it'll only work if richard can earn the same respect
33:01so you've seen what i've done i'm going to hand you the lead i'm going to perch on here i'm worried
33:06about richard actually i'm going to teach richard how to do the right kind of discipline how to set
33:11boundaries rules you know right then let's see what we got so you know the score ziggy's never listened
33:18to his dad leave it so don't quite let him out leave it but with a bit more grit behind him leave it
33:26good boy good tone of voice there leave it that's a good boy ziggy's finally paying attention oh that's
33:35a good boy good boy good boy oh he's sad yeah good boy hey richard really surprised me there he's got
33:42the right tone of voice for this leave it fair play i didn't know he had it in him but can he be
33:47consistent with it well you're doing ever so well so i thought well i want to just bring one thing

34:31biggest rope in the world are you enjoying the luxurious upholstery it feels very odd to be
34:37sitting on the sofa with him just there well i think we've got the whole room back together it's all
34:43it's all here isn't it since he was a pup ziggy's been free to play by his own rules ripping the house

36:46wanted a medical check before tackling the training you don't lick me thanks with the
36:51all clear from the vet it seemed huey's fecal fascination went right back to puppyhood as the
36:58lone survivor of a litter of 10. some dogs learn it because as puppies their mum will eat the poo to
37:03keep the nest clean is he eating more poo graham's got the green light to train huey and he reckons the
37:10key is recall getting him to turn his back on pooping pups now for training i've got a problem
37:16because theoretically i would need a whole line of my dogs who just like poo on command one after
37:20the other after the other and i don't think that's going to happen so i'm gonna have to get a bit
37:26creative and true to form good boy graham's found a dog who does a number two on cue there that's frank
37:36the bulldog oh my gosh can we see frank's party trick please oh oh my gosh it's a frankfurter
37:51oh he's gonna love this isn't he maybe not quite as much as poo but the theory is if trish can recall
37:59huey from a juicy sausage chances are she can pull him off a dog one too we're going to put him on a
38:05long line so he can't actually get to the frankfurter although he's going to be really quite close to
38:09it and wanting it when he comes back to us he gets a treat if he can do that he should also step away
38:15from the uh delicious poo and the whole thing relies on one key principle we've got to be more exciting
38:22okay than poo first trish needs to choose a clear recall command to stick to all right normally what i say
38:30to get him back look what i got oh well you can do that if you want yeah if we have one frankfurter
38:35please boom there we go right come on huey let's check it out for this to work trish must be more
38:42exciting here we go than the potential poo and be clear with her commands no that's it
38:50huey look look what i got oh he's got it he's got it and he got it because while you went huey
38:59not to worry trish gets a bit flustered and she's forgetting what to say trish has got to get it
39:04right you'll be a wee bit more decisive also you went huey and he's like uh yeah and yeah look right
39:12which is good and then you didn't do the next bit look what i got so you went yeah that's not the magic
39:16words is it we might have our workers out now because he's had one trish needs to up her game
39:21and make herself clear poo is off the menu huey no look look what i got perfect well done really good
39:31that's better let's go again right oh here he goes off like a shot now no huey look huey look
39:40there you go there you go so when you get your words right it works every time and when trish finds
39:49her confidence look look what i got yeah good boy i think he's going back on purpose along with
39:58excitement and treats no look look yeah good boy it works time after time clever boy i think we've
40:12done quite well with frank and the frankfurters okay what if we go find a real dog now doing a real poo
40:19and put this to the test i'm actually really excited to see if this is going to work tempting huey away
40:25from a frankfurter is one thing huey but usually getting a sniff of the real stuff huey turns this
40:33mutt into a heat-seeking poopinator stop it now they need a real life pooping pooch
40:45which isn't as easy as you'd think there's never a pooing dog when you want one is there
40:51it will be soon surely the big question is can you call him away when there's a real poo in dog

41:09she needs to be razor sharp the moment the lab goes to squat he locks on

41:38that right it's proven huey will ditch the poo if trish nails what to do honestly he's never done
41:48that he's never turned down fresh poo like that it's all about consistency yeah i really wasn't
41:55expecting any of that to work so i'm really pleased huey no look look what i got so huey who was the only
42:04puppy out of 10 to survive he has a happy future ahead of him now and uh if he should happen to
42:10give her a bit of a lick and a kiss in future well it's no worse than the average dog now is it
42:19in oxford richard's new house rules seem to be working we've managed to keep the house looking
42:24more of a home and zach is able to play while ziggy just relaxes
42:30graham's puppy school students have been revising hard good girl
42:39and loki might even be head of the class
