00:00Did you always want to become an actor?
00:02No, I mean I was always very creatively inclined.
00:06I was an assistant director for a couple of years.
00:08I'd assisted on this film with Ashaib Kapoor and Jiriliya.
00:11This was called Chance Pidans.
00:13And during that process, you know, because it's very cool.
00:16And I'm like, let's give it a shot.
00:18When you sort of had your own fair share of setbacks,
00:22everybody asked you to sort of use your mother's name.
00:25They wanted me to rename myself as Tanuj Agni Otari.
00:29I believe that your famous parent can only get you so far.
00:33My first two, three films did not work at the box office.
00:36I was in box office, jail.
00:38Malburi said that I had signed up because if I didn't have my back against the wall,
00:43then that opportunity would not have presented itself.
00:45I would be doing films.
00:46What is that one misconception that people have about star kids?
00:50They think we get everything served on a platter.
00:53They expect you to be as good as what your mom or your dad is in the 10th or 20th film.
00:58So, it's very difficult to compare.
01:01But it's low comparison.
01:02You gave India its first bad boy clip-nitor, Vayuragavan.
01:07Yeah.
01:08How much of resemblance do you have with him?
01:10So, I was in a different space in my life.
01:12So, you could say that there were certain parallels between my character
01:15and where I was at that point in time.
01:17In fact, I joke with a lot of my friends that Vayuragavan is my best imaginary friend.
01:22Tell me, who's your favourite post-star by far?
01:24I think maybe Sidhan Chaturvedi.
01:26So, Ritwik Ganjani is a dear friend of mine.
01:28We've done a very nice show together called Cartel.
01:30What is that one trait of fatherhood that you've aced now?
01:35I know how to make my daughter smile and laugh.
01:37One thing I struggle with isโฆ
01:40You told me about your mom.
01:41Yeah.
01:42She's worked with Gurrajni Khan.
01:44Absolutely.
01:45And Amitah Pachinsa.
01:46Yeah.
01:47Did she give you any like acting advice?
01:49Do you have to get this emotion?
01:51Do you have to do that?
01:52Not about the craft itself.
01:54About how one should conduct themselves in this industry.
02:04So excited to have you.
02:05So excited to be here.
02:06Yeah.
02:06So first things first.
02:08I want to know, like I've seen you everywhere.
02:11You've run Slitvila, you've done movies, you've done Inside Edge, Kodem.
02:16Right.
02:17But let's rewind it back to you being a young kid in school.
02:24Okay.
02:25Were you the cool kid who would crack the funniest jokes?
02:29Or were you the one, you know, sitting, making doodles of superheroes?
02:33I feel I was someone in between.
02:35Yeah.
02:36I was not like one of those backbenchers who would be sitting in Gribbling.
02:39But at the same time, I didn't have any cool cool kid.
02:42Truth be told, I was quite shy.
02:45I had a bit of humor.
02:46So I think when you have a bit of a stammer,
02:48it kind of gets in the way of your confidence.
02:51And it really affects you.
02:56I think as I went from primary to secondary school,
03:01and then when I came to junior college,
03:03after 10th,
03:04so I feel I started kind of realizing who I am and getting to know myself a little better.
03:11I had a little confidence.
03:12Okay.
03:13So I think it was something that happened very organically over a period of time.
03:16But I was not a cool kid for sure.
03:18But were you bullied for like a stammer during school?
03:21No.
03:22But so I made a switch.
03:23So to the fifth standard, I was in a different school.
03:25And then in sixth grade, I came to a much larger, more intimidating school.
03:29I wasn't bullied.
03:30But at the same time, you know, I was constantly reminded that, you know, for some reason,
03:36it was not said in a very nice way, you know, like that your mom is an actor and you know,
03:42whatever you're getting is only because of that sort of thing.
03:45So at that age where you're in a very vulnerable age and you know,
03:49it can really mess with your head, you know,
03:52and in the day, because like, you just feel like you're nothing.
03:56I am a single child, right?
03:57I mean, I am a single child.
03:59How far from that?
04:00So, you know, I was in the minority, right?
04:02Because all my classmates or friends,
04:06they all had a twin brother or sister, younger brother, older sister,
04:13so I guess when you have a sibling of a similar age, you can speak to them.
04:18I really did not have anyone my age to speak to.
04:20And we live in a nuclear family.
04:21I live in a joint family.
04:22Okay, talking about your journey from school, then of course, acting happened.
04:27Did you always want to become an actor?
04:30No, I mean, I was always very creatively inclined.
04:33I always thought that whatever I do in life, it will be something creative.
04:38It will not be like, see, my dad's into real estate and construction and stuff.
04:42And all that.
04:43So that's not something that really excited me too much.
04:46You know, I always thought maybe I'll open a chain of restaurants or maybe get into advertising.
04:52Actually, ironically, my first job as an intern, we were talking before we were rolling internship and stuff,
04:57was at an advertising agency.
04:59So because it's creative, right?
05:00So I thought maybe that.
05:02In other days, I thought I'll get the opportunity to do something in front of the camera, right?
05:07Correct.
05:08So I always thought maybe I might get into writing, into direction.
05:11Something where I get to be creative, tell stories, but at the same time, I'm not facing the camera.
05:17So then I became an intern.
05:18I was an assistant director for a couple of years.
05:20I'd assisted on this film with Shahid Kapoor and Jiri Liyad Suza called Chance Pidans.
05:25Another film with Aftab Shibdisani called Aho Vishkade.
05:28And during that process, you know, because it's very cool.
05:30Because I'm the clapper boy, right?
05:37So I literally see that actor in a split of a second transitioning from who he is in real life personality to the character and what he has to say in that particular scene.
05:46And like the director cut says, he's back to who he is in real life.
05:50And I found that fascinating when you witness it over a couple of years.
05:54And you're like, my God, it's like, it's like a whole different world in that little bubble.
05:59And then it's burst in your back over here.
06:01So I found that very intriguing.
06:03And that's where this is something I was attracted to.
06:10And I'm like, let's give it a shot.
06:11So it actually had nothing to do with the fact that my mom's been this superstar for so many years.
06:16Yeah, that's actually where I was getting to when you sort of had your own fair share of setbacks.
06:23Everybody asked you or advised you rather to sort of use your mother's name.
06:28Yeah.
06:29But you did not.
06:30No.
06:31So why was that?
06:32They wanted me to rename myself as Tanuj Agni Otari.
06:35And I'm like, dude, I love my mom and I love my dad, but this is our family surname.
06:39And I believe that your famous parent can only get you so far.
06:44After that, your individual journey, that is something that that is your journey, man.
06:51That is your experience.
06:52And why would you want to trade it in for freebies?
06:55You know, so I'm like at some point, Agni Otari was not a name surname.
06:58My mom created a beautiful, wonderful career.
07:01And that's why Agni Otari became a known surname.
07:03So I would like to create something as a Virwani.
07:06And of course, I mean, there were a lot of setbacks early on in my career.
07:09But I also believe that every setback also creates a lot of opportunity, right?
07:14Simple thing is.
07:15My first two, three films did not work at the box office.
07:18I was in box office jail.
07:20And people were not willing to put money on me.
07:23And I, because back then, OTT was what?
07:30No one knew what OTT was.
07:31It was like, what is this YouTube content that you want to be part of?
07:34You want to be a film actor?
07:35You want to be a film actor?
07:36You want to be a film actor?
07:37What are you doing?
07:38But I took that leap of faith because I had confidence.
07:41And also, as I said, I did not have any other work.
07:44And it turned out to be a masterstroke for me and for my career.
07:47It gave me a second lease of life.
07:49And if I was, if I didn't have my back against the wall, then that opportunity would not have presented itself.
07:54I would be doing films, you know, and then we realized in the subsequent years, the power of OTT and our web series and, you know, the reach.
08:03It's massive now.
08:04Far exceeds what one would have imagined, you know.
08:07So you just got to, yeah.
08:09Yeah.
08:10Take those stones and turn them into milestones.
08:12When you were facing those setbacks.
08:14Yeah.
08:15How did you deal with that?
08:16Um, so I wasn't very affected when my first film tanked at the box service because I had already signed and I was already shooting for my second film.
08:23Purani jeans.
08:24Yeah, Purani jeans.
08:25And at that point, I had a three film contract with that particular production.
08:28Now, so I'm like, dude, I'm sorted.
08:30Right.
08:31I had insurance, right?
08:35I had that cushioning.
08:36But unfortunately, when the second film bombed, the three film contract went away.
08:41And, uh, I was just cast aside.
08:44Right.
08:45And so, so, so there was quite a struggle between the second and third film.
08:49Then when I signed the film with, uh, Sunny Leone, uh, I was like, okay, you know, cool.
08:53I mean, uh, I've, I've, for the first time in my career, I have the padding of a legit, uh, uh, star who's at the peak of her career, you know, uh, be it her films, be it her songs, everything really popular blowing up in a big way in India.
09:09And I'm like, okay, yeah, the film does well.
09:12Yeah.
09:13It's my success as well.
09:14And if it doesn't do well, it's her failure because she's the one carrying the film.
09:17So I'm like, okay, this, this seems relatively safe.
09:19Very proud of that film, by the way, because I felt like it, it, uh, touched upon some very important, uh, subjects, but from a woman's point of view, because, um, you know, we had two girls, we had Naira and Sunny in the film, our director, Jasmine was female.
09:33So there, so there was no male gazing in that film.
09:36From a girl's, from a woman's perspective, uh, the songs did really well, uh, especially Ijazat.
09:41But unfortunately the film didn't do well at all.
09:44So at that point I'm like, holy shit.
09:46Like now what?
09:48Like, you know, like hat-trick oh yeah.
09:50In cricketing terms.
09:51I'm like, I'm like in back to back flops.
09:52And ironically, I remember it was 5th of May, 2016.
09:56Uh, when one night stand was released in theaters.
09:59And that very same day.
10:00In the picture, I came out of the interview.
10:02Uh, I got a popcorn and I get a call from an unknown number to answer it.
10:06And on the other end of the line is someone from Excel.
10:09And they're like, hey, listen, um, we really like the audition you had given, uh, for this role of Vayu Ragavan.
10:14They're like, hey, listen, uh, so the director wants you to come in and, uh, read with him.
10:18And, uh, we want to take this forward.
10:19So when can you come in?
10:21And I'm like, um, tomorrow.
10:23They're like, yeah, okay.
10:24So I went in the next day.
10:25We shook hands and the rest, as they say, is history.
10:28That's how it happened.
10:29So you gave India its first bad boy cricketer, Vayu Ragavan.
10:34Yeah.
10:35How much of a resemblance do you have with him?
10:37At that junction in my life, I'm talking about, like, we shot it in 2016.
10:41It released in 2017, the first season.
10:43Yeah.
10:44So I was in a different space in my life.
10:45So you could say that there were certain parallels between my character and where I was at that point in time, uh, sort of makes it easier to portray that role.
10:53Right.
10:54Um, but then what I really like about long format storytelling, and I'm very blessed that at least so far, we've gotten three seasons of Inside Edge.
11:01Yes.
11:02And at every junction in my life, I was in a different headspace.
11:05I was in a different headspace personally, professionally as an artist.
11:08So I was able to bring those life experiences to my character.
11:12So Vayu is different in season one, season two, season three, because me, Tanuj, was in a different space.
11:18And I, and I find that, uh, to be like really exciting and cool.
11:22You know, I, in fact, joke with a lot of my friends that Vayu Ragavan is my best imaginary friend, you know, because-
11:28Or is it your alter ego?
11:29Or maybe it's my alter ego.
11:30I mean, yeah.
11:31One thing we definitely share in common is our love for cricket.
11:33I genuinely do love cricket in real life.
11:35Yeah.
11:36Coming back to your career.
11:37Now, Kodem.
11:38Also a very good series.
11:40Yeah.
11:41What I really loved about my journey with Kodem, and hopefully we make more.
11:45I mean, you never say never, is that the entire Sarkas, especially Jennifer, myself, our director, Akshay, because we are the same director in both seasons.
11:52And I feel like we were able to establish a very good working equation with each other.
11:57He's a really awesome guy to work with and to create material with.
12:01And as is Jen, you know, so when we all got together, it was easy peasy, you know, like I feel, I feel when the creative energies are good, then ideas just flow and things happen organically.
12:13So, you know, something's written on a page.
12:15Now, if you read a dialogue, there are 10 different ways to say it.
12:18But when you have that creative freedom and that comfort that, okay, worst case, they won't like it.
12:22They'll say no, but at least it's democratic where I can speak and Kodem allowed me that.
12:28A lot of the dialogue on Kodem, at least with my, pertaining to my character in both seasons has been ad-libbed.
12:33It's a pretty intense show, right?
12:35Yeah.
12:36And also the thing is, largely we were shooting at real locations in Jodhpur, at the officer's mess and at Bombay Sappers in Pune.
12:46So, the thing is, you have to maintain a certain decorum.
12:49You can't just, you know, like be a prankster.
12:52But having said that, I remember one day during season two, I came on set earlier than I was needed because I was bored in the hotel.
12:59And I'm like, yeah, I'm going to shoot.
13:01And I see like, you know, these three trucks full of like soldiers and really cool weapons.
13:07And it was my first day on set.
13:09And I'm like, it's really cool.
13:10I'm like, wow, we must have done something right in season one that they've given production so much money because this is looking like, you know, A-list Hollywood film right now.
13:19Wow. You know, like production value.
13:21So, I went and I told my producer and director, guys, hats off.
13:25You guys have outdone yourself.
13:26This is, you know, the first season was a little short.
13:28This is a scale.
13:29You know?
13:30Yeah.
13:31And they're like, uh, thank you.
13:34But it's anyway, sheepish way.
13:36So then I went to one of the, uh, guys with all the junior artists, right?
13:40With the guns and all.
13:41I'm like, come on, let me show you a little bit.
13:43Let me show you a little bit.
13:45So, I'm sorry.
13:46I'm like, bro.
13:47No.
13:48It's not real.
13:49Just give it to me.
13:50I'll play a little bit.
13:51I'm like, sorry, sir.
13:53I won't give it.
13:54So, I went back to my director.
13:55I'm like, guys, even my attitude is not giving me.
13:59I'm just telling you, I'm all just playing around, you know?
14:02So, he's like, uh, Tanoj, bro, actually, these are not junior artists.
14:08Uh, these are all real soldiers and that's real equipment.
14:12And those are real army vehicles.
14:14And they've been kind enough because we're shooting on their premises.
14:17And this is a very pro army show.
14:18And because our producer has such amazing equations and contacts with them,
14:23that they allowed us for one scene to use it.
14:26And that one scene that they've given us for, you've come and washed everything up.
14:30Please don't ask them for their weapons.
14:32And I'm like, oh, my God.
14:35What have I done?
14:37What have I walked into?
14:39I just, I went to my eyes sheepishly with my tail between my legs.
14:42So, since we've talked about your mom.
14:45I want to ask you, what is that one misconception that people have about star kids?
14:51I think the one misconception that people have is that they think we get everything served on a platter.
14:57I won't deny the fact that early on in your career, at least before you kind of made your first appearance or a movie or show, whatever you start off with.
15:06Um, you do have one foot in the door.
15:08It's easier to gain access to members from the fraternity.
15:11Out of respect for your mom or your dad, they will meet you.
15:14But at the end of the day, it is a film business.
15:16It's an industry.
15:17They're not just going to put money on you if they don't think you have what it takes.
15:20Correct.
15:21You know, so I just feel like, okay, you might get one opportunity, maybe two if you're lucky and you know, your parent has enough goodwill or whatever.
15:30But after that, you've got to chart your own path.
15:33It's a simple thing.
15:34And those expectations are also great, right?
15:37So, they hustle it the same?
15:39Yeah, because they expect you to be as good as what your mom or your dad is in the 10th or 20th film.
15:46Yeah.
15:47And it's very difficult to match up to that, right?
15:49To those lofty standards and all.
15:50And if you're coming as a rank outsider and newcomer, maybe you don't have that pressure.
15:54The pros negate the cons and vice versa.
15:57Mom was like a charmer.
15:58Really?
15:59She was a darling.
16:00Yeah.
16:01Right?
16:02She's worked with the best of the best.
16:03Absolutely.
16:04People.
16:05Rajni Khan.
16:06Absolutely.
16:07Amitai Pachin.
16:08Yeah.
16:09So, Ushtang, people did not have access to stars.
16:12No, they did.
16:13Because you're talking about an era way, way, way before social media.
16:17Way, way, way before cable television.
16:18Yes.
16:19So many different things.
16:20There's so many technological advancements that have happened between then and now.
16:24And which will continue to happen.
16:26So, it's very difficult to compare.
16:27But people do comparison.
16:29People do comparison.
16:31Like, oh, but she was so good in Ekdunchi Kalei.
16:33And what he did in his first movie.
16:35Oh, but she was so good in Kooli.
16:37But what is he doing?
16:38Did you face that?
16:39Yeah, of course I faced that.
16:40Largely like from the public and all.
16:42Yeah.
16:43And from the industry, what was the response?
16:45I mean, they were very bullish about me till the day I entered.
16:48And then I think they saw my person got scared away.
16:50And then the same phone calls stopped coming in.
16:53They stopped answering my calls.
16:54And then I realized, okay, I think the struggle starts now.
16:57And of course, it's always a struggle.
16:58You know, like anyone at any and every level.
17:01It's such a competitive and unpredictable industry.
17:03You just don't know.
17:04It's like going to a casino in Vegas.
17:07What's going on?
17:08What's going on?
17:09You just don't know.
17:10You just have to put your head down and keep working.
17:11Yeah.
17:12So even now the struggle is there.
17:13You know, like you finish one project and it's always like, okay, what's next?
17:17Yes.
17:18Okay.
17:19Now what?
17:20So the struggle is always there, but it's also exciting.
17:22On that note, what's next for you?
17:24What's next for me?
17:25Yeah.
17:26I've got season two of Rana Nailoo coming.
17:29So I'm really excited to join that show.
17:32I get the chance to work again with Karan Anshuman, who's my showrunner from Inside Edge.
17:37So it's really cool.
17:38Always fun to work with him.
17:39I've got this really interesting film called Johnny Jumper where I'm playing a secret undercover operative for the local law enforcement in Gopal.
17:49But his day job is that of a cable operator.
17:53It's directed by Saurav Verma.
17:54It's got Vijay Raaz, Brindal Kalra, Zakir Hussain, Zari Nawab and myself in the title character of Johnny Jumper.
18:00We've got this and I've got this other show with applause called DAU, Domestic Anti-Terrorism Unit.
18:05This is a very gritty Mumbai based co-op drama.
18:08I'm playing an ACP on that.
18:10And it's got Rahul Dev as well.
18:12So very excited about that.
18:13So you've also made many friends working, worked with so many people.
18:16Tell me, who's your favourite co-star by far?
18:19Very difficult to pinpoint one favourite co-star but I think maybe Sidhan Chaturvedi.
18:23Sidhan Chaturvedi.
18:24Yeah.
18:25I've always been very fond of him.
18:27And it's amazing to see his rapid, rapid meteoric rise to stardom.
18:32And yeah, I just saw some people you just wish them well.
18:36And he's right up there because I've seen him from his initial days.
18:39As you keep joking, I'm like you're more talented than the rest of this project put together.
18:44Everything you paint, you sketch, you dance, you do action, you play the guitar, you write poetry, you sing.
18:51What are the children?
18:53What are we doing?
18:54Talking about co-star, is there any specific person you want to work with or any director?
18:59Of course.
19:00I mean, I've got such a big list of people.
19:02I would definitely love to work with Nawazuddin, Pankat sir, Jaideep sir, Ranveer.
19:11Of course, if you're talking about the more mainstream ones, Someday, SRK.
19:16Oh, you're a big SRK fan, right?
19:19So many, so many more, you know.
19:21I mean, yeah.
19:22I really like the kind of work that Vijay Varma is doing.
19:24You know, so many.
19:25Yeah.
19:26And directors, I mean, I prefer kind of like dark edgy stuff.
19:30So like, my Sriram Raghavan movies, Anuraka Shahab, Dikrama Ditya Motwane, those are like Imtiaz Ali.
19:36I like, yeah.
19:37And of course, if you're talking about mainstream movies I've grown up watching, definitely Karan Johar.
19:42Of course, talk about your friends in the industry.
19:44Yeah.
19:45You have to name five closest buddies to me.
19:48And there's a twist here.
19:49Oh God.
19:50You have to tell me one thing about each one of them that nobody knows.
19:54So, Ritmik Ganjani is a dear friend of mine.
19:56We've done a very nice show together called Kartel.
19:58So, he's definitely a buddy.
20:00One thing you'll probably don't know about him.
20:02He does amazing magic.
20:04Magic?
20:05Magic tricks and all that.
20:06Really?
20:07Yeah, yeah.
20:08With cards and all that.
20:09Yeah, yeah.
20:10All that stuff.
20:11You know, like, he'll do something.
20:12He'll take a coin out from you.
20:13Like, he's crazy.
20:14I'm like, might as well bring that hat and come.
20:15You know.
20:16It's good.
20:17So, it's always fun having him over when we have get-togethers.
20:21You know, because he's like a walking-talking body trick.
20:24So, he's definitely one.
20:26Another one also who played Kartigat on Sacred Games, Jitendra Joshi.
20:31So, unfortunately, I'm not going to meet him in a while now.
20:34But very, very, very fond of him.
20:36One of the most humble, hardworking and fun guys to be around.
20:40And he never sticks to the dialogue.
20:43He comes up.
20:44He's one of the only actors whose dialogues are cooler than what was written on the script.
20:48But that also means, as the co-star, he's always improvising.
20:51So, I have to be like, I don't know what's going to come my way, right?
20:54Because if he maras something, then my reply may or may not make sense.
20:58But beautiful improvisation.
20:59I get so jealous of people who are able to improvise like that because I can't.
21:03Coming to, well, the inside edge part of things are definitely Chaturvedi.
21:09One thing that no one knows about him.
21:12Yeah, he likes going into a shell before a take.
21:15So, like, he won't be speaking much.
21:17He'll be wearing his headphones.
21:18He'll be...
21:19You won't even know.
21:20He'll be like, he might be in this room.
21:21You won't even...
21:22He'll be blended with the furniture.
21:23Because he just wants to kind of make that transient.
21:25It's, you know, kind of journey into...
21:27Sort of be in Zen mode.
21:29Yeah.
21:30And then the moment the camera is rolling, man's a firecracker.
21:33I had a lot of fun working with Neha.
21:35Neha Sharma.
21:36We've done a show together called Illegal.
21:38She was very kind because I was the newbie, right?
21:40I mean, it was the second season of the show.
21:42So, she's really nice to work with.
21:44One thing...
21:45She's actually a total foodie.
21:48But, you know, of course, because of the trappings of our industry.
21:52And, you know, we're expected to look a certain way.
21:54So, she's very health conscious and all.
21:55But, like, we used to have a lot of fun on set.
21:57Her, me, Akshay, Akshay Obray.
21:59All of us, we used to sit at home.
22:01Hannah used to come.
22:02We used to all sit together and eat.
22:03And it's very nice, you know, because that's a nice way
22:05when you're spending so much time away from home where
22:07you all get to bond as a unit.
22:09Like the camaraderie is good.
22:10Absolutely.
22:11I would definitely say Jennifer.
22:12Two seasons of Kodem had a lot of fun.
22:15She's someone who's very no-nonsense on set.
22:18One thing people don't know is that
22:20she comes on time and she leaves on time.
22:22Okay.
22:23Yeah, yeah.
22:24Very chill.
22:25She never went late.
22:26Are you a punctured person on set?
22:28I might be like five, seven minutes here and there.
22:30But, by and large, I fried myself in being fairly punctual.
22:32When in this Mumbai traffic.
22:34Yeah.
22:35So, we're done with your professional life.
22:37We'll delve into your personal life.
22:38Ooh, spicy.
22:39Spicy stuff.
22:40But for that, we need some spice.
22:42Yes.
22:48Talking about your personal life.
22:50You got married in 2023.
22:53Yeah.
22:54You have a beautiful baby now.
22:56Now, I want to know.
22:58It's a beautiful love story that started with us being friends.
23:01And we go back a long way.
23:03I've known her since 2016, 2017.
23:05And she was in Mumbai at the time.
23:09She'd come here.
23:10She was doing some modeling.
23:11And our families also know each other.
23:13So, you know, that gives it a sort of lived-in feeling.
23:16And, yeah, I guess at a certain point in time, she shifted back to Singapore.
23:23And we just thought that, you know, it's time for us to take this beautiful friendship to the next level.
23:31And why don't we give it a proper shot.
23:33And that's when we...
23:35Who proposed to her?
23:36I proposed to her.
23:37And how was it?
23:38It was a surprise for her.
23:39It was at a very beautiful place.
23:43Oh.
23:44So, yeah.
23:45Fulfilled myself.
23:46Now, tell me one thing.
23:47So, what is that one trait of fatherhood that you've aced now?
23:52And what is one thing that you're still struggling with?
23:55Oh, one thing that I aced.
23:57I know how to make my daughter smile and laugh.
24:00And trust me, no matter how bad a day I'm having otherwise,
24:04just coming home and seeing twinkling eyes and that toothless grin and disburnt,
24:10because she doesn't have teeth yet, is the most heartwarming feeling in the world.
24:13One thing I struggle with is...
24:16I mean, to be honest, Tanya is the one doing most of the heavy lifting at this point.
24:21She's very, very attached. Navya is very attached to her.
24:24So, like, I'm still playing a slightly secondary role.
24:28Though I would like to contribute more, but I'm trying to do the best that I can.
24:31Let's go back to your dating.
24:33Hey.
24:34Tell me, what's the one cheesiest line that you've used on somebody or somebody's used on you?
24:40I've done this as really stupid, but I...
24:42Many, many years back, my college went up and there was like some...
24:47There's like an ice bucket lying.
24:49And there was a really beautiful girl standing at the bar and I want to go talk to her.
24:54So, I went to the bar. I don't know what I was thinking.
24:56So, I had a couple of drinks and I went and I emptied the ice on the ground.
25:01I started stamping on it.
25:02Okay.
25:03She said, what the hell is going on? What's wrong with you? Are you fine?
25:06I said, now that I've broken the ice, can I get you a drink?
25:10What?
25:11Yeah.
25:12Whatever.
25:13It worked.
25:14So, maybe not so already.
25:15It worked?
25:16Yep.
25:17Okay.
25:18You'll be surprised what worked.
25:19You never know.
25:20Whatever you do with conviction, it will go.
25:24Just.
25:25That's the worst kind of breakup that you've had.
25:29Almost.
25:31Tell me, what's the worst excuse that somebody's given you to break up with you?
25:35I was dating this girl for a fairly long period of time and she broke up with me over a WhatsApp message after I dropped her to the airport.
25:42Saying that, I'm doing you a favor because you're not happy with me.
25:47I'm like, do you want me to decide?
25:50I mean, she was right in hindsight now when I think about it.
25:53But yeah.
25:54And then she put her phone off and took the flight.
25:57And exited my life.
25:59You're like now in love.
26:01Yeah, yeah.
26:02Of course.
26:03Yeah.
26:04No other reason to get married, no?
26:06I mean, come on.
26:07Dude, you gotta be in love.
26:08No, I mean, you gotta be in love.
26:09But sometimes what happens is people get married and then they fall in love.
26:13Getting married is a very, very big life choice, right?
26:16Till your dating is different.
26:18But till you don't only solely, madly, graciously, deeply love your wife, your partner, whoever it is.
26:24You can't take that chance here that you get married and hopefully I fall in love.
26:28No, no.
26:29I would not be able to.
26:31But what is the one dating advice that you would give to the youth of this generation now?
26:37One thing that I think is sorely lacking in today is authenticity.
26:41I feel that everyone is in a rat race.
26:43Everybody wants to try and ape what they think is expected of them.
26:48And what makes you unique and what makes you special is that fire that burns within.
26:55The authenticity.
26:56The authenticity.
26:57And you can't do it in the house.
26:59And you can't do anything else.
27:00And you can't do anything else.
27:01When are you going to put on a fast or put on a facade?
27:04You can't do it on the short term.
27:07You cannot do it day in, day out, 24, 7, 365.
27:10So I feel it's extremely important that I would rather be hated for who I am than love for who I'm not.
27:19How fair.
27:20So I feel that's definitely something I would like to tell the rich generation and anyone who is getting into a relationship for the wrong reasons.
27:27Yeah.
27:28So like I'm 38 right now.
27:29So obviously many of my school and college friends, the girls, my age, similar age and all that.
27:34The moment they hit about 31, 32, there was this desperate pressure and desire to get married because the pressure from home, pressure from society.
27:43And they end up making wrong choices because of the societal norms and whatever.
27:50Don't.
27:51That's not the way.
27:53You'd rather take two years more, but don't settle for anything less than what really makes your heart beat faster and slower at the same time.
28:02And do you think that if a person can fall in love, they can also fall out of love?
28:08Yeah, of course.
28:09Of course.
28:10It's possible.
28:11We live in a very my way or the highway sort of society and culture these days.
28:15What do you mean unfortunately?
28:17Because there's so much temptation around every corner and there's that.
28:21So sometimes what we mistake for love is actually not love.
28:25It's probably lust or it's probably you just like someone, but you think you love them.
28:30Because society says that, oh, you must love your partner.
28:33But maybe, maybe it's just a word.
28:35It's different.
28:36There's always a difference in liking someone, crushing on someone, lusting for someone and being in love with someone.
28:42Talking about your mom.
28:43Yeah.
28:44Did she give you any like acting advice?
28:46How do you have emotions like this?
28:48What do you have to do?
28:49Nothing?
28:50Not about the craft itself.
28:52About how one should conduct themselves in this industry.
28:54Because it's a very complex and complicated industry.
28:57And high is very high or low.
29:00It's like a roller coaster ride.
29:02So she's always told me one thing.
29:04Never let success go to your head.
29:06But don't let failure go to your heart also.
29:08Wow.
29:09You know, you just focus on your process.
29:12And the results will come from yourself.
29:13You say that you live like you're doing like you're doing like you're doing like you're doing like you're doing like you're doing like you're doing like you're doing like you're doing like you're doing like you're doing.
29:19So if you put that into perspective, it is a very clean, simple line.
29:24But it teaches you everything and anything and everything that you need to do about acting.
29:27Wow.
29:28The greatest actors, the greatest performances, the greatest films that we see, you don't think they're acting.
29:31You think they're just being.
29:33And that's why we're able to relate to it.
29:35She was obviously like a legend.
29:37Yeah.
29:38Yeah.
29:39Tell me something about her that people don't know about her that you admire.
29:43I admire everything about my mother.
29:44I think she's an amazing omega.
29:46She's been an amazing mother to me.
29:48She's been an amazing friend to me.
29:51And she's had a very strong and large influence on me during my formative years.
30:00Any specific childhood memory that you remember?
30:04Oh man, there's one very funny one.
30:06All right.
30:07So I knew my mom's an actor, but that time she was on a break, right?
30:10After she got married, she didn't work for 16 years.
30:13She was raising a family.
30:14She was a homemaker.
30:15Yeah.
30:16Stuff like that.
30:17And they would not let me watch.
30:19They let me watch Coolie.
30:20They let me watch all the other films.
30:21They didn't let me watch one film.
30:22And I'd heard about this movie from so many people.
30:25So one day it happened to be coming on the cable.
30:29And I happened to watch it.
30:30And at the end of the movie, I mean, spoiler alert, they die, right?
30:34Yeah.
30:35Okay.
30:36And I was absolutely mortified because for me, I'm like, oh my God, my mom just died inside
30:43the television set right now.
30:45And then I go howling and I'm about to enter the washroom.
30:49So I had to pass the kitchen.
30:50And then I see my mom and she's doing like some work in the kitchen.
30:53I look at it.
30:54I'm like, oh my God, boot.
30:57Yeah.
30:58Yeah.
30:59It actually happened.
31:00Yeah.
31:01So that was funny.
31:02Really stupid, stupid kid.
31:04But yeah, it's funny when I narrated after so many years.
31:06Yeah.
31:07Yeah.
31:08I want you to be authentic in our next segment also, which is going to be rapid fire.
31:11So it has to be rapid and fiery and spicy.
31:14Like, okay.
31:15So what's one red flag that you are, but you somehow make me look charming.
31:20I'm a really incoherent and messy person overall.
31:25I'm very loud.
31:26I can be brash.
31:27And I love Bollywood dancing after two, three drinks.
31:30And sometimes me and my wife are 38.
31:34You're married.
31:35You're a kid.
31:36You have a little control.
31:37You know, like, yeah.
31:38So I have these small, tiny red flags.
31:40But yeah.
31:41Yeah.
31:42Okay.
31:43Tell me one fake flex that you've used on a date.
31:46You know, I'm actually really real.
31:47Yeah.
31:48So I don't think I've ever had to use anything as such.
31:52I've not been on many dates in my life.
31:54Okay.
31:55I've just had girlfriends.
31:56So by the time I'm on a date with them, I'm already dating them.
31:59Okay.
32:00So I'm not, we didn't have these apps then.
32:06And what age did you start dating?
32:08I had my first girlfriend when I was on the ninth stand-up.
32:11So I was about 14 and a half.
32:13Yeah.
32:14Okay.
32:15So hypothetically, you're on a date.
32:17And the girl says, I don't like Shah Rukh Khan.
32:19So what do you do?
32:20Host her, blog her or call the police?
32:22All the three.
32:23All the three?
32:24You're that big a Shah Rukh Khan fan?
32:26How dare you keep your stupid opinions to yourself?
32:28Why would you even like bring that up?
32:30Like on a date.
32:31It's easy.
32:32Yeah.
32:33Okay.
32:34So choose, marry, hook up, block.
32:36Okay.
32:37I'm giving you three options.
32:38OTT content, Bollywood movies, posting reality shows.
32:41I would hook up with the movies.
32:45I would marry OTT and...
32:47Break up with reality shows.
32:49Break up with...
32:50I mean, I don't mind reality shows.
32:51But on the three, definitely...
32:52Okay.
32:53Yeah.
32:54I would break up with reality shows.
32:55Okay, fine.
32:56Has there been any role that you auditioned for and you didn't get it and you regret it?
33:00Yeah, man.
33:01So many roles.
33:02Anyone?
33:03I was very close to getting Rajkumar Raul's role from Talash.
33:07And, oh yes, there was this English show I was a massive fan of called Homeland.
33:12I think maybe season five.
33:14I auditioned and for a very cool part.
33:20It was a new character who, which eventually, the kid from Life of Pi, Suraj Sharma, he eventually played.
33:27Okay.
33:28And I'd been shortlisted.
33:29I'd done little three rounds of auditions and stuff.
33:31And they even asked for my passport details because I think they were going to be shooting in South Africa.
33:35And I was like, holy, what the hell is my favorite show?
33:39It's my favorite show.
33:40Yeah.
33:41I watch it every year and I'm going to be on it.
33:42You know?
33:43You know?
33:44I thought it was like, man, man, man.
33:45Yeah.
33:46And then I just didn't get it at the end.
33:47So who do you stalk on Instagram the most?
33:50And we'll gladly find it out.
33:51Honestly, yeah.
33:52Very, very boring answer.
33:53But like, I mean like complex sneakers and Supreme and stuff like that.
33:57Oh, he's sneaker head.
33:58Yeah.
33:59I know people say, um, Champagne Papi Drake.
34:02I mean, yeah, yeah.
34:03You love Drake?
34:04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
34:05In fact, one of our dogs is named Drake.
34:07Oh?
34:08Yeah.
34:09I don't know.
34:10He's white lab, yeah.
34:11What's one behind the scene moment from any shoot that deserves its own show?
34:14Oh, yeah.
34:15I mean, so I don't want to mention the name of the show.
34:19Yeah.
34:20But I was, actually, it's a movie, shooting for a movie and all.
34:23And I'm doing a really intense scene with my co-star and all.
34:26And suddenly, so I have this thing, right?
34:28I don't like even walking in my eye line because it kind of distracts me, right?
34:31And suddenly I see these two bozos in the background and they've come in the panther dolly
34:36and they've picked it up and they've left.
34:38And I can feel I don't have light on my face.
34:41But I...
34:42Yeah.
34:43I finished performing the scene and then they cut in it and I'm like,
34:46Hey, did any of you all just notice what happened?
34:48And they're like, huh?
34:49What?
34:50What happened?
34:51I'm like, two dudes just came and walked up with lights.
34:53What the actual...
34:54It was going on over there.
34:55Then we got to know that apparently the producer had not paid the lighting department some bills.
35:00So they were taking the stuff and going.
35:03Last question.
35:04If your co-star, any co-star had to roast you in one sentence, what do you think they'd say?
35:10Hyperactive annoying cutlet.
35:12Because I do like, sometimes it's so weird, right?
35:15I mean like, like you asked me before the show, like if you want to take a smoke break and I don't smoke.
35:20I don't do anything else, right?
35:22And so many people have come to me and they're like,
35:24What the fuck?
35:25I'm like, what the fuck?
35:26I'm like, this is just my inherent personality and energy.
35:32I mean like, you know, but why does it straight away have to be that?
35:35Okay.
35:36This segment is called Style Tinder.
35:38So you have to either swipe right or swipe left.
35:41I've never been on Tinder.
35:42So right means...
35:43So right means that you say yes to it.
35:46Right is ye, left is nae.
35:48And swipe left is nae.
35:49So you have to swipe right or swipe left.
35:51Nae, alright.
35:52So this is all about fashion, okay?
35:54So neon green oversized quartz set with chunky sneakers.
35:58Yeah, right.
35:59Okay.
36:00Good.
36:01Subvisati Sherwani with Air Jordan.
36:03Absolutely.
36:04Okay.
36:05Airport looks with sunglasses at night.
36:08Swipe left.
36:09Okay.
36:10Graphic tees with cheesy pickup lines.
36:12Left.
36:13Cool.
36:14Low rise jeans making a comeback.
36:16Swipe left.
36:17Okay.
36:18Wearing logos so big that they can't stay from this place.
36:21Left.
36:22Left.
36:23Left.
36:24Guys wearing nail paint?
36:25Left.
36:26Left?
36:27Yeah.
36:28Printed silk shirts?
36:29Left.
36:30Okay.
36:31Short shorts on men?
36:32Left.
36:33Unless you're Salman Khan from
36:35Take her on check.
36:36Keep your alley.
36:37Because our man can put off anything but for the rest of us mere mortals, no.
36:41Yeah.
36:42Matching outfits with your partner.
36:43Right.
36:44Yeah.
36:45I'm very cheesy lad.
36:46I love doing it and my wife is like, is it really needed in our legs?
36:50Yes.
36:51Matching clothes, matching sneakers, matching everything.
36:53Wow.
36:54Yeah.
36:55Okay.
36:56Transparent mesh top for guys.
36:57Definitely.
36:58Water.
36:59Yeah.
37:00Okay.
37:01Now, passion hot takes with Kanuch.
37:04This segment is called.
37:05Alright.
37:06Now you either defend what I'm saying or you cancel it.
37:09Okay.
37:10Okay.
37:11I'm going to give you some statements.
37:12This is different and this is cancelled.
37:14Yeah.
37:15Okay.
37:16Socks with sliders are the new red carpet staple.
37:20Oh my god.
37:21Yeah.
37:22Dirty is the worst thing.
37:25I get so irritated when I see that.
37:28Yeah.
37:29Yeah.
37:30This trend needs to be murdered.
37:31Sliders?
37:32Okay.
37:33Okay.
37:34Real men wear pink.
37:35Yeah, sure.
37:36Absolutely.
37:37Defend.
37:38Defend?
37:39Yeah.
37:40But it depends what pink.
37:41The baby pink is okay rather than shocking pink and all.
37:42Yeah.
37:43It's like Barbie.
37:44Yeah.
37:45Sneakers over formal shoes at any event.
37:48At any event?
37:49At any event.
37:50Uhh...
37:51Just about defend.
37:54Defend.
37:55Defend.
38:08Yeah.
38:09This one is going to hit you at the right spot but hoping not.
38:14Okay. Style is 20% clothes and 80% attitude.
38:21I'd say 40-60.
38:2240-60?
38:23Yeah.
38:23So, defend in a way.
38:24Okay.
38:25Okay.
38:25So, if you don't post your outfit on Instagram, did you even go out?
38:29How does it matter? Of course, yeah.
38:31Cancel?
38:32Cancel.
38:33Okay.
38:33The real flex is re-wearing outfits and still slaying.
38:37Yeah, I mean, of course, yeah.
38:39Yeah, because I mean, you can't wear new outfits everyday, right?
38:42Okay.
38:42I mean, I don't have 3-6-5 different outfits.
38:45But looking at your wardrobe, you have more than 3-6-5.
38:48I'm not to afford myself.
38:49I don't get perfume.
38:50But no, no.
38:51But yeah, I mean, I'm out of weight.
38:53I have issues with shopping, but yeah.
38:56Okay.
38:57I need to start experimenting more with silvets and pips.
39:01Yeah.
39:02I defend that, yeah.
39:03Yeah?
39:04Sure.
39:05Okay.
39:06A good perfume is more important than a good jacket.
39:08Yeah.
39:09Yeah, yeah, yeah.
39:10Because I think it's very important.
39:11See, also, everyone smells differently with a scent than they use, right?
39:15Yeah.
39:16It's a common, it's a scientific thing.
39:17Yeah.
39:18So, I think it's very, very appealing or can be really, really, wow.
39:21Also, yeah.
39:22Yeah.
39:23So, again, come back to Shoes.
39:24Shoes say more about a man than his Instagram bio.
39:28Yeah.
39:29Yeah.
39:30Defend?
39:31Absolutely.
39:32Okay.
39:33Then confidence can turn even the ugliest outfit into a trend.
39:37I mean, there's a limit to that.
39:39Let's not abuse the privilege, but of course confidence goes a long way.
39:43Yeah.
39:44So, you'll defend that?
39:45Just about.
39:46Okay.
39:47Cool.
39:48Spending over 50 TM seekers is a love language.
39:51Defend, I'm sure.
39:53Rania, I'm sorry.
39:54Yes.
39:55Yeah?
39:56Okay.
39:57Last one.
39:58Ranveer Singh is the real fashion icon of India period.
40:01Yeah.
40:02So, I do appreciate his fashion choices.
40:05Sometimes it's a bit too hectic for me.
40:08But by and large, yeah, he's definitely got a good sense of style.
40:11Do you defend that statement?
40:12Yeah.
40:13Okay.
40:14So, that was our rapid fire.
40:16I hope it was rapid fire.
40:17I hope you enjoy it.
40:18I hope you enjoy it.
40:19I love it.
40:20Look at me.
40:21Yeah?
40:22Yeah.
40:23Absolutely.
40:24So, if I offer you Table for 2 season 2, are you going to come again as a guest?
40:27Absolutely.
40:28If you don't offer me, I'll be here.
40:29Yeah.
40:30I'll be stalking you on your own show, you know.
40:31You just might find me in the background somewhere.
40:33Yeah.
40:34Thank you so much for being on the show.
40:36Absolutely.
40:37My pleasure.
40:38It was so much fun having you here.
40:39It's fantastic that, you know, this just feels like such a nice, happy, lived-in conversation.
40:43Yeah.
40:44So, fantastic.
40:45I hope you enjoy it.
40:46We also have a very special gift.
40:47Oh, wow.
40:48This is Turkish confectionery from this very nice gourmet brand called Mizaya.
40:52Can I open it?
40:53Yeah, of course.
40:54With your permission?
40:55Let's open it.
40:56Oh, wow.
40:57And I hope you like it.
40:58That's actually really cool.
40:59Yeah.
41:00Thank you, thank you.
41:01Yeah.
41:02Thanks for the cookies.
41:04Yeah.
41:05Lovely.
