00:00So I have with me Lord Rami Rangir. He is a British Indian businessman and a conservative
00:21politician and the member of House of Lords in UK and he's joining me today to have a discussion
00:27on anti-immigration protests that recently took place in UK. Sir very warm welcome to
00:32Asianet News and thank you so much for speaking with us. Yeah thank you for inviting me. Sir you
00:38yourself have a personal journey as a refugee and as an immigrant in UK. What do you make of
00:46the anti-immigration protests that took place in UK? You know Britain has always been welcoming
00:52country for people who want to come, who want to work hard, realize their dreams and ambitions
00:59and become an asset. So there is no problem there. It has been inviting refugees and people in need
01:06right from the day you can remember. You know lots of people even the Jewish people came lots of people
01:13from Africa came you know especially the Ugandan Asian came to this country who were in trouble.
01:19So Britain is an open door policy that you if you generally generally need help Britain will not
01:26refuse it's a very tolerant country civilized country and you can see the very fact the immigrants have
01:32done so well they just demonstrate the British sense of fair play and tolerance you know prejudice is
01:40always you know so we have to ignore the negativity. Having said that in Britain I've been here 55 years
01:51Britain accept diversity, respect diversity and protect diversity through laws. There are laws of
01:58against discrimination of any kind especially against you know race, religion, gender. So therefore it's a very
02:06multicultural country where there are mosques, temples, gurdwaras, synagogues, churches. So it's all good but
02:15recently people have found out that they can abuse the hospitality of this great country by just coming
02:24in boats and you know because the process in this country is so long to ensure that no one is at a
02:33disadvantage and no injustice is not done to anyone so they come here and they stay for many many years
02:40because you know by the time the people the process uh the situation changed the you know
02:47they have children they have their roots in this country so so therefore it is now people have had enough
02:55the British people that those people who are illegally began those who are coming through boards by paying
03:01the uh people smugglers to come to this country who know the system and who can abuse the system
03:08so therefore the moral of the story is that you know the enough is enough because we do not have enough
03:14housing we do not have enough uh social services the facility to cope with influx of so many migrants
03:22coming in unchecked so therefore the people are and you know some of the migrants are not even integrating
03:30and you know there are some people who come to this country to make their lives and some people come
03:35here to convert you and that's why you know people are really fed up that you know you come to this
03:41country because this country was successful why do you want to change the institution which has served
03:47this country for years and centuries so therefore there are wrong kind time kind of immigrants also
03:53are bringing this negative uh response from the locals so i think uh the leaders uh of the countries
04:02from where these people come they will speak to their community and they will tell them that if you
04:08have come to this any country you've got to abide by the rules you have to live by their standard and
04:14not to change it and you know people resent it even i resent you know if somebody was to come and change
04:19united kingdom because that is not the country i came to you know so therefore we have now the
04:27reaction of excessive migration and the welfare system which provides safety net to people and the
04:37people have come to abuse it uh and you know so many of them so what do you think what do you make of
04:45the government's policy uh the labor party's policy on immigration because there is a lot of discontent
04:51with the policy itself well unfortunately labor party has always gained from the migrants you know
04:59they come they're struggling they want to vote for the party which offers them benefit and the labor party
05:04does offer more benefit uh by punishing the risk taker the one who work hard they sacrifice their lives
05:13to building their business and the labor party will come and take it claw their you know life saving
05:21so that's why the labor party has been soft with immigrant but now i think the balance has tilted
05:28whether you're labor when you're conservative you can no longer uh carry on with the policies a few
05:35years back because there's a backlash you know there's a third party emerge i i don't know whether you
05:41know about reform party and they have captured the imagination of people and they really made a huge
05:49dent to the conservative voters because the conservative was in power and during their power the
05:55immigrants were you know migrants were coming in a lot of number they couldn't and you know politician
06:00politician also put their own agenda above else because there was a policy to send these people to
06:07rwanda to have their application process but that then they had these challenges in court supreme court
06:14the house of lord and they stopped that scheme if he was to go ahead uh i think the labor is now trying
06:22to take it to make a speech where they will take people to either albania or some other country but
06:29that's the only way because you know you can't bring them to this country where there's always resentment
06:35and that that resentment can boil over and people like me who have built up a successful business
06:42and been an asset and contributed a lot to this country ever since i arrived will also be treated in
06:48the same manner i also can have the uh repercussion like me not just me but there are many people i mean
06:56the richest man in the united kingdom is of course a hindu just and then luxury with the sub successful
07:03people running businesses very very successful you know we are product of secular democratic
07:10country with rule of law at the heart so we accept their values because they're similar value to our
07:15value but there are some people who come with a different value and they need to change because
07:19that value which they were practicing has not brought them success so why come and make us backward to
07:26the country you left behind so i think there's a very big uh debate going on and i appeal to all the
07:32leaders that they have to put the interest of people who are already here you know who have already
07:38worked hard they they have demonstrated their loyalty to the king and the country they have become an
07:43asset they should not face the effect of this mass demonstration you know this is very inconvenient
07:52and it's frightening to us you know that what is going to happen things can go out of hand
07:59so i was coming to that i mean there is a huge concern about if there will be a risk on diaspora
08:04and of course the ethnic minorities who are living in britain uh what sort of uh political representation
08:11we can see in parliament in the coming days will there be anything uh which will be raised in parliament
08:16regarding that to protect these vulnerable people 100 every politician is of every you know political
08:24party is now is listening to the concern because that is why they're in public life because they want
08:32to serve public and if they ignore they ignore the wishes of the people the concerns of the people
08:40that could backfire on them and on their party so therefore it is you know situation is that if you do not
08:48nip the evil in the bud then you will encourage more and more people to come openly and our race
08:55lesion our social cohesion can be damaged you know beyond repairs and it might take years to repair it
09:02but the in the in the meantime the damage would have been done a lot of people will move from this
09:07country already people are moving because of height higher taxes so therefore now because the crime
09:13in united kingdom is also very high uh because there's so much freedom and a lot of people are
09:19leaving because of this also and if people keep on coming you know unchecked or unwetted uh they could
09:27be criminal they could be gangster they were drug dealers or whatever and that could affect the fabric
09:32of this society so on social media when these uh anti-immigration protests were taking place on social
09:39media there were a lot of commentary which had uh an undertone of being xenophobic but at the same
09:46time there were some people who were heard saying uh genuinely uh showing their concern about how there
09:52are a lot of immigrants in certain sectors like labor sector housing sector uh but at the same time
09:59you uk needs to continue to take these immigrants absorb them to progress as a nation i i agree with you
10:06because you know this is a very fair country people also do not want racism to get out of hand because
10:12racism is a cancer you know if because uh if it is not uh checked or controlled or uh then it can really
10:23harm the country as a whole because you know this country is a small country and there's a lot of
10:28people from different countries you know immigrant for nearly 150 country live here side by side and this is
10:34a very diverse country you know very cosmopolitan city and that can have a negative effect so therefore
10:40people have to really take charge the politician and they have to address the concern of the vast
10:48majority of people who are now you know speaking very loudly that enough is enough you have to stop
10:56these both people you have to stop the illegal illegal immigrants who are jumping housing queues who are
11:02getting benefits and who are getting all sorts of facility and the the the person like a pensioner who
11:09has worked all his life to build this country goes without heating bill uh without heat fuel sport for
11:15the winter's fuel sport so therefore there are a lot of resentment because people see that these people
11:22are given five or not five or three or four star hotel and they get air conditioning 24 7 heating
11:29food uh on demand you know everything done for them so therefore you know people are really not amused
