00:00Thousands from the Romanian education system, dissatisfied with the austerity measures adopted
00:05by the government in the education sector, have taken to the streets in protest. The
00:10demonstration comes as the coalition government, led by Prime Minister Ilie Bologian, approved
00:16two packages of austerity measures to reduce the budget deficit as part of reforms. The
00:21measure specifically places a 10% cut on the salary fund of public institutions. Teachers
00:29have threatened to go on a general strike if the austerity measures are implemented by the government.
00:59Many money invested in education have never been received. The money they need to insist on
01:03the taxes on us, the reduction of expenses. The superior education, alongside the pre-universitar,
01:09the past year has increased the norms, has taken some measures and now comes and says that
01:14it is equal to zero and it should be done again 10%.
01:17Demonstrators argue that the new decisions will affect the spoken conditions in schools and universities.
01:23The situation has also prompted conversations and comparisons with Ukraine where the budget allocation
01:30for education has been increased.
01:32If a country in war increases the salaries of professors and students, what explanation
01:40can they have any other country that is not in war? A country that understands that in the
01:47most complicated moment of their existence, they need to invest in those who can
01:55go on.
01:57A country that is not in war.
01:59What explanation do we have when we tell them that those who produce the real knowledge
02:03or do well, they do well, they need to pay them.
02:31Three trade union associations from the education sector are expected to announce
02:36whether there will be a strike in March or June, later this month.
02:40Additionally, education unions have launched a petition campaign for a citizen's legislative initiative.
02:45The effort aims to repeal what the unions describe as anti-education measures adopted by the government.
02:51For the proposal to be submitted to the parliament, it requires at least 100,000 signatures.
