03:08knew that you had uh these gifts so growing up you know everybody like oh let him do it he gonna
03:15shine look at him go ahead and get the microphone baby who knew that you had that special gift we'll
03:20start out with you rotimi whoo okay so when did you know when did i know or when did they know tell me
03:27both okay so uh my mom is a prayer warrior so she had a dream that bob marley had come to her when um
03:37she was pregnant with me and she he had said to her your son is gonna finish my legacy what so
03:44being a nigerian kid most nigerian parents don't really support arts it's always you have to be a
03:50doctor a lawyer engineer so at that point in time when i came to my mom she was like okay he's gonna
03:56be an entertainer so around three years old she had me singing as a wedding singer for all the nigerian
04:03weddings all through connecticut new jersey so uh yes my mom was my first manager and around three
04:10years old that's when i knew and that's when she knew and it was just around that time and it was
04:14on from there yeah yeah the hard work from there what about you jacob um i mean it's entertainment
04:20was just kind of in my family right so like kenny latimore is my cousin a lot of people thought that was
04:27my dad for a long time but i'm a junior my dad is jacob senior and um my dad and my uncle's former
04:34used to form a group called jersey ave randy jackson signed into uh mca records like 2099 something like
04:41that i was super young so i used to see them doing that thing and music and then um a script was handed
04:48to me at a young age about like 10 years old and i was like nah i don't want to act you know i want to
04:54do music and then me and my mother we was like let's go to atlanta we from milwaukee we just didn't
05:00feel like it was much opportunity there and um we moved to atlanta i just got more open about other
05:06things like let me just try it and i i did one of my first auditions ever it was like a it was like a
05:12cable commercial you know what i'm saying i'm just smiling it wasn't no script or anything and then um
05:19met an agent got my first my first real movie script and from then on it was just like acting
05:25just sort of took over and me actually one of my first projects was me uh rotemi yeah a film called
05:30black nativity black nativity 2012 yeah something like that yeah something like that so what was that
05:36like working with each other like because you've seen the progression obviously of your careers
05:41working together back then and now doing stages like this and seeing each other
05:46in your ascension in your career talk about those beginning moments because people don't
05:50people people see this right they don't see 2012 black nativity yeah it's it's incredible like i mean
05:57it feel like it was yesterday and it's the thing about it we've been we've been doing it for a long
06:02time but it's still only the beginning you know like it's just sometimes you can kind of feel like i've
06:08been in the game so long i should be here but you don't realize how much time you got left so i would say
06:13that um it's it's good to just be patient with yourself because everybody's journey is different
06:18and you know just for us to be on start off with hit shows and you know and music is still our
06:24passion and still be able to do that you you can still do your first passion and still you know
06:30be open to those other opportunities that come so it was i think that's film i thank god for film
06:36because man it paid bills you know music is music is tough yeah and that's true for you wrote to me
06:42because of your role on power it was like yo no no yo yo i sing i sing like i'm a performer but like
06:48people fell in love with that character and it was in your mind it was in the i guess reverse order
06:55yeah would you say that would be absolutely you know again when when you play something so polarizing
07:00and it makes people feel a certain way yes you know it made it it made it it gave it's like a gift
07:08and a blessing okay i never say gift and a curse it's a gift and a blessing because the gift was being
07:13in front of so many people and the blessing that came from it was like okay i'm in the eyes of these
07:18people what do you do with it now and i know it for us it for the music to cut through it has to be
07:26flawless it has to be so good that it makes people say i see you as this every week but i rock to you
07:33like this and and we have to work 10 times harder because we're battling two facades yeah you know so
07:40but you have to be willing to put that work in and you know for seeing him going back to what your
07:45your question before like 10 years ago he was the lead of the movie and he's always been that guy
07:51you know and so to see him grow and still being where he is we all know and knew he was going to
07:56continue to to ascend the way he is right so and for me it was i was a extra on it it was a day player
08:04you know what i mean but our our and so i ever have love for him because our our respect for each other
08:11was how it is today yeah like we knew we just connected then you know not knowing what god was
08:16going to put you know going forward so now like just seeing it 10 years later it's amazing
08:21so it's 10 years okay we both look good we y'all both look good you heard i say thank you so jacob
08:31what do you attribute to that i mean you know you started so young in the industry um you continue
08:37to grow but you have remained the same jacob you know um a lot of people can't say that in the industry
08:44uh amongst your peers and fans what has been that why has it been so good for you and how have you
08:53been able to continue to stay grounded uh i used to ask myself like what i what i want in the next 10
08:59years or the next 20 years in my career i always felt like if i just keep going things gonna happen
09:05awards more movies more music whatever i think what i always pray for is to keep my sanity through
09:13it all like keep my mental as i keep elevating i think that's what i pray to god for the most
09:20every day you know i think like i don't really i don't really pray for the next movie role because
09:26whatever is gonna come is gonna come for me because i'm i'm putting in that work anyway
09:30but if i can keep my mind together through it all i'm gonna always be happy you know and that's why
09:35i will never want to reach all these goals and be so connected to these goals and then i'm not happy
09:41and i'm looking for something else you know i'm looking for you know you're just like i'm missing
09:45something i got the money i got the clothes i got whatever but now it's like it's really just about
09:51keeping my family close to me and um and just keeping people i love around me and keeping good energy
09:56and really just spreading that i think that's that's the most important thing for me and that's
10:01that's how i live every day right yeah that's beautiful bro timmy you know because of your
10:06ascension as as the character and power but now continuing to do well uh in your in your music
10:13career what keeps you going and continuing to you know make sure you tap into the right opportunities
10:22that speak to who you are as a person well again man and jacob can attest to this i think
10:30picking the right things has a lot to do with your team too okay like our team work very hard and they
10:36see the same passion they have the same passion for us that we have for ourselves so that's a blessing
10:41you know but for me man it's all about doing great work man like i just love creativity so it never really
10:47feels like i'm working you know and so for me whether it's a movie role whether it's tv whether
10:52it's a record or a stage it all feels the same because it's just creative yeah you know and so i
10:58just want to be creative and i thank my parents for allowing me to play instruments and choir and
11:04basketball and soccer like just my mind was always multitasking so like i'm happy that they started
11:10that all for me earlier yeah yeah so for um for me uh i started off on radio and doing acting and
11:16and hosting television shows and all that stuff and i understood the impact that it had on my husband
11:20um i remember him saying hey you give the world rashawn ali but i can't even get a piece
11:24on when you come into this house how do you all balance not giving away your personal life but how do you
11:31balance making sure that the people who love you most and hold you dear through their heart heart most
11:36get the best of you when you give the best to the world you got it you want to listen to anyone
11:44oh okay i got it come on uh all right so for me what i do is i i compartmentalize my time okay so i make
11:58sure that i turn my phone off they get my undivided attention um and again i make sure that like
12:07we spend a lot of time praying together so we spend a lot of time in bible service we spend a lot of
12:13time watching sermons because that 45 minutes can make it feel like we spent seven hours together
12:18right you know what i mean and then just also making sure vacations but i could never when i was
12:23playing power i could never bring dre home i'd run away from myself right you know so so evil evil
12:30right he was terrible he was bad he was okay yeah it's okay but no but for like i think for me it's
12:37more so just understanding that this is my priority this is what i need to do spend time quality time
12:44and it's not about buying things it's really just being present in the moment and you know and no
12:48instagram no nothing just being very present so that's how you kind of offset that yeah yeah time
12:55management time management i i think i'm still learning i guess you know as i'm as i grow older
13:00like and and prioritizing family and um you know just my a lot of my family came to atlanta uh as i was
13:09leaving so just being on facetime and just i was on the phone with my little cousins you know like let me
13:14answer the phone real quick you know like i gotta i gotta make that time you just gotta find it you
13:19know sometimes i'll even i'll even answer while i'm on set depending on how deep the scene is you
13:25know if it's like if it's i could take a little family call in between and so you just try to i got
13:30so much family i got i gotta pick up yeah you know so yeah speaking about being on set i mean the shy has
13:36just been such a major hit like how has your character in this project just kind of changed
13:43changed you um it's it's been a lot of lessons because i mean i don't i don't have children i don't
13:49have i'm like half of it is me and half of it is just not me right yeah yeah so it's like a part of me
13:55i get to put a lot of my personality into it but then a lot of me is just learning oh wow this is when
14:02i first season the baby would not stop crying like i literally had to learn how to make him relax
14:09because his real daddy behind the screen like right and i'm sweating on camera like and but i was
14:15nervous about that but i'm like let me actually use that because i am a new father i like my character
14:20is a new father he doesn't he doesn't know all these things he's learning so i think it's been a
14:26big learning lesson for me you know i think um and doing it the right way choosing the right woman you
14:30know right right uh it's it's it's been fun it's been a journey that uh that's been super relatable
14:37for you know to to my my world and just a lot of families you know across the country so it's been
14:42it's been dope that's great that's great you know we have a people in the audience who are you know
14:47pursuing gifts of wanting to act wanting to sing or wanting to do whatever it is open a business
14:52and i hope that you are inspired by some of the words that these gentlemen are sharing today
14:55today but what advice would you give to people because as people are watching on the stage because
15:00i'm out in the crowd a lot of times watching my favorite stars what would you say to them to keep
15:05going in spite of what's around them or even what's in their mind because the mind
15:11is the is the thing that's the click that has to happen but what what what advice would you give
15:16to anybody that has that dream that's in their heart because if god places a heart on your heart
15:20how dare you not try you got to try i think honestly once believing in yourself i mean as cliche as it
15:27is right i mean it starts with that it starts to believe in yourself and then to allow not allow
15:32anybody to say yo you can't do that and most people say they can't do it because they've never seen it
15:40done before so you understand that to a certain extent but it's why can't i be the first yeah you
15:45know that mentality and that mentality will carry you with the consistency with the work ethic and then
15:51building a great team around you and then if you spiritual praying man that that really opens up
15:56the discernment for where you should go yeah but put in the work like you got to put in the work
16:01get a great team and don't listen to people who say no to you that try to hate on you man like just
16:08stay away from that because it's very important you need people that believe in you to keep pushing you
16:12yeah yeah good stuff um i would say i know i would say like keeping the right people around you but some
16:18people feel like they don't have the right people around them right and i feel like the internet is a bad
16:22place but it's also a great place there's so much content where i even look up if i'm not around my
16:28family i go look up some td jakes i go look up some motivational speaking just to tap in because when
16:34you when you isolated and by yourself even the best places to to meditate on on something you're focused
16:40on so and there's so many stories of like the kanye west documentary was oh my god like it was life
16:47changing it made me want to hop back into the studio read a script do something do something
16:52and think about something so it's a lot of content out here to absorb that isn't negative that you
16:57can you can go tap into and be like man this the world is distracting me right now let me narrow in
17:02on something and and get a message so yeah that's good that's good so who inspires you rotate me who
17:08inspired no go ahead jacob said you were said you were kind of on that oh um i was looking at uh uh
17:13uh what's the the hip-hop preacher i'll be looking at him oh um eric thomas eric thomas yes um i looked
17:20at a lot of will smith motivational videos yeah denzel uh kanye uh i mean i'll tap into it again
17:28he's not yours yeah i tap into a lot of them the one i'd probably add is jamie jamie fox yeah yeah
17:36i think that's one other one that we both probably will add but like and i do a lot of research on
17:40harry belafonte too okay yeah because he's like the original triple threat like the original renaissance
17:46man that cut through and was black so yeah i watch a lot of his stuff too right you know we always
17:51talk about the best piece of advice that you've gotten the one that i've gotten is uh when i was kind
17:55of high in my radio career my general manager god rest his soul now he's passed on he was like
17:59rashawn whatever you do in this business don't get lost and i was like what that mean but it was so
18:07heavy i guess he saw me kind of you know making a little money doing you know it just saw me you
18:12know feeling myself a little bit but i never forgot that and i carry it with me wherever i go no matter
18:19where i am if there is one piece of advice that you hold on to or maybe two or something that you
18:26that you go to in those moments what would that be oh it would be for me um
18:37tyrese telling me when we shot black nativity 10 years ago just trust your intuition
18:42and trust your instinct don't second guess yourself um and just be really really uh what's the word
18:52and be really intentional intentional there you go yeah so be really intentional and trust your
18:58trust your instinct trust your first feeling and you'll be straight wow yeah that's good i gotta
19:02piggyback on that because i think about two years ago uh i was like i'm i am gonna stop like not
19:11listening to like to my gut you know what i mean because i feel like i always prove myself wrong
19:16you know something like if i don't say something or if i if i think about something i just don't say
19:21it it'll happen and i'm like ah like i just told myself that year to always trust my that inner
19:27that inner instinct that inner god you know what i mean because those are messages you know when we
19:31praying we like we ain't looking for answers but this is right there in your soul it's right there in
19:36your heart so why why not bet on you you know what i mean bet on you so i would say i would say that
19:42yeah that's good stuff that's good stuff uh i know we're about to wrap up and i would love for
19:46everyone to know what you have going both of y'all have great things uh coming up so tell us what is
19:52next i think our careers are just tied to each other dog we got we got a movie coming out i love it
19:59together uh house party we did the house remake july 28th well actually it's not coming out to i only
20:08moved it well there's some executive changes oh we we've got i forgot i thought you i'm sorry so um
20:15what it's gonna come out soon it's about soon it's not gonna come out till next year now because there's
20:20some changes happening at warner brothers oh yeah um but i think i think it's for the better i i hope
20:26i hope we get a theater release i'm a big fan of of going straight to streaming but i'm ready to see
20:31us in the theater again man so i think i think and this is the type of film i've watched it like five
20:36or six times it's good yeah it's good it's funny and i think um people aren't expecting it to be good
20:43and i'm excited about that because it was such a classic exactly but we did our thing though yeah but
20:48oh yeah it wasn't like it isn't a remake we're not like trying to redo the 90s like okay we leaving that
20:54where it is you know what i mean but we definitely giving our our feel on it our energy chemistry's
20:59crazy everybody's family yeah throughout the whole movie like everybody knows each other so yeah when
21:04you got great chemistry it's hard to deny a good film absolutely absolutely what else i have a single
21:09coming out july 8th um and i got a song out right now that's top 10 on billboard yeah i do is doing
21:16pretty well so yeah just keep pushing everything man and just keep moving man just keep moving
21:21yeah you love that music and i got a skincare line that you know go ahead keep going what is it called
